Mavericks iBooks freeze

When I try to change the font/theme on my MBP I get a message "CoreText.FontDownloadHelper.xpc is trying to Install Apple-provided software. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this."
Here is a scroon shot:
When I do this, iBooks hangs until I have to force quit the app.
This does not happen on a MacMini running Mavericks.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for that, Makes perfect sense.
I should have figured it out for my self, I have around a thousand extra fonts on the Mac in question and I usually manage them with Fontexplorer X, I must have turned off all the fonts not in use at some point thus causing the problably.
I discovered I could actually get iBooks to work by clicking on the cancel button when the "CoreText.FontDownloadHelper.xpc is trying to Install Apple-provided software..." dialogue appeared. After that I could change the fonts and themes without problem but it was a pain having to do it every time I wanted to change themes. Fortunateley all is well now.
Thanks for the fix.

  • IBook freeze

I have a problem with my ibook freezing that started a few days ago; it began by freezing at the blue screen (prior to the login window), and now will variously freeze at black screen, grey screen, apple logo, or on rare occasion make it to the desktop.
    The particulars:
    ibook G4 800 with 512 additional RAM, Airport, 60 G HD (new)
I have done fsck (no reported issues), Disk repair utility- repair permissions, repair disk, Hardware test (no reported issues, but I couldn't do the loop test due to freezing) Disk Warrior, I installed a new hard drive with a clean install of OSX (I installed 10.3), (no effect), and have tried starup with and without the removeable RAM and Airport installed (no difference).
I'm out of ideas, but am beginning to think that the problem may be with the fixed RAM; however I can't run the ibook long enough to get a good test without freeze up. One additional note: the problem seems to get progresively worse the longer the ibook has been on, i.e. it gets further into startup say, if it has rested overnight.
Anyone have thoughts on this? Also, if it is the fixed RAM, does that mean a new logic board?
    Thanks all!

I hate to add on to everyone else but the same thing has happened to me. It stalls on the opening grey screen with the swirling circle, then after about 15 mins or so it goes to an empty blue screen with mouse capabilities(meaning I see the mouse arrow, and can be moved). Im kind of runnin the same specs as the first poster. I really don't want to get have my wallet raped over getting this laptop fixed. Is there any help for us?
    Cheers

  • Transferring Images to SD Card - iBook Freezes

I'm trying to move photos from iPhoto 5 to a Kodak 512MB SD Card via a USB card reader. Trying to move about 320 images (approx 480MB). The iBook freezes every time I try to copy the files across.
iBook is a G4 with 1GB RAM. I've tried to load them a few (approx 50) at a time, but I still end up with the iBook freezing.
I'm doing this to load the SD card for a digi photo frame for Xmas pressie. Any thoughts/ suggestions?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks - I tried that (of sorts). I dragged them into a folder from iPhoto and then tried to transfer them onto the card - didn't work unfortunately.
I did solve the issue. Much to my chagrin I burned the photos to CD then dragged and dropped them onto the SD card on my mother-in-laws windoze machine (to much gloating from her!).

  • External hard drive causes Mavericks to freeze

When connecting an external hard drive Mavericks just freeze, and the only thing I can do is to do a force shutdown. The external drives are Western Digital (USB 2.0) and LaCie (Firewire 800), connected to a MBP mid 2007 4 GB RAM running OS X 10.9.5. I did a clean install of Mavericks.
I've tried to repair permissions but that didn't do the trick.
I'm totally lost here, don't know what to do, so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks.

An Apple Hardware Test may provide a clue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
In any event an appointment at an Apple store genius bar may be the best option.   The diagnosis will be free regardless of the age of the MBP.  You will need to bring the external HDDs with you.
    Ciao.

  • IBook freezes when items are sent to print

    hi there.
our iBook freezes whenever we send something to print. the icon for the printer never shows up in the icon bar and there is no reaction from the printer, but when the computer is restarted, the printer spits out whatever was being printed.
this happens no matter how many applications are open, and even when the printer's usb cable is plugged directly into the computer (our normal set-up has the printer's usb plugged into a usb hub that houses a couple other peripherals.)
    any ideas?

Are you trying to download items simultaneously? If so, you may be taxing the RAM on the iPad. You mention apps download fine as long as you are not trying to download any other content at the same time. I would suggest one download at a time if the iPad is freezing when you perform simlutaneous downloads.
If you insist on continuing that way - and it is your choice to do so - you may want to close any open apps and restart the iPad on occasion if you want to download this way.

  • My Apple Apps are unresponsive after installing Mavericks. iBooks, Maps, App Store, iCal, etc. will open, but freeze

After installing Mavericks, I found that my Apple Apps (iBooks, App Store, Maps, iCalendar, iBooks, etc) will open but freeze or are none responsive.  I have reinstalled Mavericks, did a recovery and reinstall, almost everything that I could find in other discussions.  They only thing that helped was the recovery, until I tried to reinstall Mavericks.  Someone please help.....

OS X Recovery does restore OS X meaning Mavericks.
Make sure there's enough storage space ...
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in  OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

  • IBOOK freezes! Please help!

I was talking to my friend one day and I was saying sorry..my apple froze. He told me he was suprised because apples don't freeze.
I have been having this occasional problem for a while now. I had my ibook for about 2 years now..perfect condition..but sometimes when I am just typing an essay or makign a movie..or whatever the whole thing freezes and I have to force shut it down.
Does anyone know why this might be happenign? I have enough hardrive space..everything seems to be perfect. I update and everything..so what is going on?

Do you get a message on your screen asking you to restart your computer or does it just stop responding?
If you have had any additional memory installed I would try removing that and see if it happens again. Another thing to try would be to boot from your install disc and run Disk Utility to check and hopefully repair any errors.
Had the same problem and it turned out to be the additional memory I installed.

  • Post mavericks update freezing problem

I am apparently another who has had their awesome Macbook pro 5.5 mid 2009 corrupted by an update to Mavericks, or something. It is beyond my skill set to figure it out. Can anyone help? Please!
Specifics found below in the Etrecheck output.
    History:
    Running OSX 10.5 happily.
Decided to upgrade to be more secure so upgraded memory (which passed memtest 5 times through) from 2 - 8 gigs.
Purchased the 10.6 upgrade Disc and then did online update to Mavericks.
Problem after upgrade...Especially but not entirely when under battery power (Battery at less than 500 cycles and working well) I get complete freezing aside from blue vertical lines on part of the screen. Must do a hard shutdown after this.
    Attempted solutions:
Using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC)- reinstalled older backup of drive after an erase. I was shocked that the problem was still there as this sent me back to OSX 10.6.
Tested memory with memtest and all was good for more than 5 cycles.
Set uo an external drive with 10.6 and then mavericks and ran this for about a week with no problems. I then transfered this back to the onboard drive after erasing it with CCC and the problems returned.
I thought it was only with battery power but this proved not to be the case, although it does freeze much less often when plugged in.
I have tried the PRAM resets etc to no avail.
Any help would be much aporeciated as would some assurance that perhaps a newer version of OSX might work in the future.
Please note. This is my partnes's computer and she is less than impressed with my "upgrade".
Cheers and have a great day.

Your report looks clean to me, sorry it doesn't indicate any obvious signs of old software that could be breaking the OS.
The only thing that would concern me is the lack of free space on the boot disk 23GB is close to the minimum. Ideally I'd like a little more maybe 30-40GB. Spinning disks perform slower as they become more full so that may not help performance, however it doesn't explain the freezing/ lines on screen.
Your tests seem to indicate something wrong with the internal disk (it worked OK for a week on external, but the same OS dies on the internal?). Was the restored OS 10.6 or 10.9?
Are any of these systems 'clean installs'? If not I'd consider using the Mavericks installer to 'reinstall' 10.9.3 over the top of the current OS. By default it only overwrites the OS files so the use data & apps should remain in place (a backup is still needed before you do this). Another option is to reinstall just a clean OS to see if the internal disk can work at all.
You can also start combing the logs for info (or hope Linc Davis appears here with some commands to parse the logs).
Start testing the disk (check the SMART status in Disk Utility).
Apple Hardware Test https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 (it may not tell you much)
Repair the disk via Recovery mode.
Since you suspect it is related to the battery…

  • Maverick iBooks - Probs syncing PDF's from iPad to MacBook

I've installed Maverick on my MacBook Pro - fine. Loving that iBooks is now on my Mac, as I'm a student and could do with the downloaded PDFs from class, otherwise on my mini iPad, to also be available on the Mac. However, the PDFs in question don't show on the macbook new iBooks! I see the collection-titles I created on the iPad, but they are all empty. Well, with one exception: a novel that I bought via the Store, that one shows.
So, how can I get all files to sync between my mini iPad to my Mac's iBooks?
    Thanks
    Sara

PDFs and PDF Collections do NOT sync within the iBooks ecosystem.
Your Collection "schema" will - but the PDFs wont.  Apple is not going to fix this.
You are far better off using DropBox and GoodReader or any number of 3rd party applications.  Create a "PDF Library" folder within Dropbox and use goodreader to access it on IOS.   The same folder (and pdfs) are then available to any computing platform - even over the web if you are using somebody else's computer.
No itunes, no kludgy work-arounds.  Just a peaceful easy user-experience.  Not delivered by Apple Inc.
To be clear, PDFs specifically within iBooks will not "synchronize across devices or platforms"
The PDFs you put/have on your MacBook Air (maverick) will only be on your macbook air
The PDFs you put/have on your iMac (maverick) will only ever be on your iMac
The PDFs you put/have on your iOS device will only every be on your IOS device
The books you buy from the Ibooks store, will of course, be available across devices & platforms.
There is no comprehensive "icloud/ibooks file synchronization"  never has been, most likely never will be.
    Cheers.

  • Ibook freeze from sleep

In trying to wake from sleep on my ibook, my screen freezes. I can move the pointer but it won't click on anything on the desktop, the menu or the dock. I tried re-closing the lid for a minute -- sometimes it helps, sometimes not. If not, the screen goes dark, and I have to re-start. Sometimes it fully restarts, sometimes it hangs before the restart is complete.
After the last freeze, my console showed about 50 copies of the following line:
ibook kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem: postEvent LLEventQueue overflow.
(The graphics card was replaced under the recall a couple of months ago.)
Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with it?

That didn't work, but I tried re-setting the Power Management Unit, and it seems somewhat better so far.
It still sometimes doesn't find the Airport (the icon in the menu bar is grayed out) on waking from sleep, but I think I can fix that by putting it to sleep again, closing the lid, waiting 30 seconds, then opening the lid again.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Help my ibook freezes when I connect usb devices

    Hi there
I have had problems for weeks when I attached usb devices to my ibook. I have a usb (MAC approved) headset which caused the ibook to freeze when I connect it before or after startup. I also have a usb modem for a broadband connection which causes the ibook to freeze. The printer is usb also, but it only causes the ibook to freeze some of the time ????? I have run the hardware test disc, there were no errors. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreiate hearing them.
    Cheers

  • Ibooke freezes when minimizing or using expose to show all windows

I have a bought a refurbished ibook from the mac refurb site 2 weeks ago, no other hardware, and have only installed office 2004.
It freezes often when several windows are open and i use expose to show all windows (approx 1 time in 2), and also when i minimise a window if a few apps are open. (approx 1 time in 3 or 4)
When frozen it just hangs & shows rotating disk & only way out is to restart using power button.
I Have tried hardware tests & disk utility etc...
Any other suggestions? or anyone else having a similar problem?
Would prefer to resolve myself as opposed to sending back on guarantee as I need it daily..
    THANKS

    furthermore..
    i have spent so much time trying to sort this out over the past week that my girlfriend has given me an ultamatum;
either the computer goes... or she goes...
has anyone else discovered that buying an ibook has had such a dramatic effect on thier relationship? and has anyone got any suggestions how to resolve this?
i think the computer has to go back to apple... unless someone comes up with a fast fix.......

  • EPub books not syncing between Maverick iBooks and iPad

The books on my Mac won't sync to my iPad. I can read them fine on my laptop but can't transfer them. I tried moving the files to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books as was suggested somewhere here but they still won't sync. I cannot buy ebooks from the iBook store because there is none in my country; how am I supposed to read them on my iPad/iPhone?

    Hey, calm down everyone.
There IS indeed a solution to this. You only have to do 2 simple steps that all your books are wirelessly updated no matter where you annotate them, on Mac with Mavericks or on iDevices running iOS7.
On Mvericks, the auto update feature is already set to be syncing. Go to the iBooks Preference > General and check the Sync Notes, bookmarks etc. This is a default setting. So there's nothing to do.
Then go to your iDevice and open up Settings > iBooks > Check the Sync Bookmarks and Sync Collections.
Then comes the magic. Everything will set up and sync automatically. Everything from notes, highlights and colections.
    Voilla!

  • Is the new Firefox update the cause for my iBook freezing up?

I have an iBook (the last model before they were discontinued) running OSX 10.4 and have noticed that it has been freezing up, forcing me to do a hard reset, ever since I downloaded the latest Firefox update.
Sometimes it seems like the screen will go to sleep and won't wake up, also forcing a hard reset.
I have done some preliminary googling but I don't think I am using the right terms to get meaningful answers.
Is this a known issue? If so, can I uninstall the update? Or is it something else that I can fix? I have Applecare, but it might have expired by now.
Haven't noticed the problem in Safari, although it's only been since last night that I switched browsers and I may just not have used it long enough for the issues to surface.

    Hi Liz!
The Firefox update, and your issue, coming about in close proximity, may just be a coincidence.
Exactly which model iBook G4 is it?
    What is the Processor speed?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?
Have you made any additional changes, like upgrading the system, updated or installed any other applications or programs, etc?
Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
    Authored by Dr Smoke:

Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?

Is the iBook shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, may not run on a timely basis.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
    I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.4.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • "Mavericks" is freezing my Mac Pro

Updated to Mavericks, now my computer freezes, and sometimes quits all of my open apps. Although it has not restarted on it's own, it seems to behave as if you were to hit restart, while apps are open, and then they all begin to close. Does anyone know what is causing this? It's happening regularly.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
