Hi Robert Lindsley!
I have an article here for you that can inform you on creating a GUID partition so that you can perform this update:
Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs require a GUID partition scheme

  • Mavericks install issues

My mbp gets to the apple screen on startup and freezes.  I have reinstalled Mavericks 3 times.  Funny thing is that it worked fine after the first install but then downloaded another package as an update?  I have run disk repair, and there were no issues.

Try to re-install with Recovery.  Hold ⌘R on boot (or hold option key on boot and select Recovery HD)

  • Speed (lack of) issues-Macbook pro post Maverick Install

Hi all... long time browser first time poster... this maverick install is killing my life.
Upgraded to Maverick, my computer was almost useless with spinning beach ball of death for everything I opened. I did the 'usual' useless stuff that someone at a realtively low IT base (like myself) would do, cleaned out trash, restarted etc. Check what was running etc, no love.
Read a bunch of other posts, tried some seemingly good advice, like verifying disk permissions and repairing disk permissions. This definitely helped, alot, and I was now able to use my notebook again, but it's still much slower than usual in most areas, and might be lucky to survive the day at work as I fear I will throw it at the wall next time excel locks up on me!
Here is my etrecheck output as most suggest I require before asking for help. I would LOVE any advice that may help me clean this up.
NOTE- the time machine back ups have actually occured to the best of my knowledge, so i don't fully understand this in the report.
    Many thanks, Levi
PS- I am currently running another time machine back up now. And, no, stupidly i did not do a recent one before i installed.... yes i realise this was silly!

    Problem solved.....
Apple support on phone could not work it out.
Apt at genius bar saw many expected thoughts- First assumption was hard drive was gone, tested this, all ok. Next was the disk needed a full repair, this would fix it. No good either. Final call- erase the entire system. Re-install the OS, and then manually trasnfer back my files from the time machine back ups, NO restore.
    this has solved it.
Clearly my computer could not handle the Maverick install without a full erase prior. Be warned, it can absorb a **** of a lot of your time, and if like myself your computer is your day-to-day work horse... it could cause you some serious down time.

  • Time machine won't back up after Maverick install

Installed Maverick today on macbook pro, then have been unable to back up to Time Machine to my Western Digital 3TB drive.  Last back up was successful just before install earlier today.
Time Machine Error "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
    and a second message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “My Book”. Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only. You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
First restarting after Maverick install I received an error message that the disk "my book" could not be repaired.
When I go to get info on the external drive, under sharing and permissions it sayes I can read only, and I cant figure out how to change this everything to try is grey'd out.
Any help in fixing the problem and understanding the issue.

I'm also having this issue. I havn't had it before.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Laptop Crashed During Maverick Install -- Need Help

    Hello Everyone,
Before we get started, I just want to open with this info: My Macbook Pro is from 2008, and has a notorious habit of crashing... I hear what sounds like a rhythmic "ticking" sound from within the laptop, and everything on screen freezes up, and I have to do a hard-reboot. Other than that and a few graphical glitches with games, it runs seamlessly and had a good 19 GB free while attempting the update. Also to note, I have a BootCamp partition of about 30 GB for Windows XP. Additionally, I was an IDIOT and did NOT set up Time Machine or make a backup for my files, because, I repeat, I'm an IDIOT apparently.
So I had 10.6.8 installed -- Snow Leopard... and I heard there was a new free update to 10.8.0: Maverick. Of course it peaked my interest and I tried to install, not realizing it could potentially brick my laptop! Shoulda done some research
    Anyway, here's what happened:
The download was successful, so I rebooted my computer and initialized the installation. Everything was fine, it said it would take about 50 minutes (even though it took a LOT longer)... and the install got not even half way before my computer crashed, with the infamous ticking sound. I was like, "oh sh**" because everyone knows that a crash during a major install is not good news. After I restarted the computer, it opened up the Maverick install again immediately, and attempted to retry... but within 10 minutes, an error pops up: "Install failed: OS X can’t be installed on the disk, because a recovery system can’t be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more."
Of course at this point, I'm confused. I have no idea what that means. So I try to reboot to see if it would help, and the same error occured twice more.
This time, when I rebooted, I held Alt-Option to see if I could just select my HD drive and bypass the install. Nope. The only options were this: "Windows Partition, Maverick OSX Install, recovery-(something something)"... my HD drive wasn't even listed! This made me nervous. So, I selected the recovery disk option and it opened a menu with a few options, including reinstalling OSX, disk utility... etc. So I selected disk utility. I then proceeded to select my HD drive, and click "repair" in the first aid tab. It took about 10-15 minutes, but it successfully finished, giving me a green "Disk seems ok" message. This was a bit of relief. But now that the disk is repaired, how do I access it and exit the endless loop of Maverick installation? Do I need to reinstall OSX with my original disk/Snow Leopard disk?
Please help me recover my HD drive... I desperately need my laptop for school.
Thanks in advance. If you need any more additional info on my computer, I will be happy to try and provide it.

if you have no install disk, best to do fsck. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 hopefully that will do something for you. when you say it "freezes" at startup it is hard to know what to tell you. there are different types of screens that occur with startup issues. this is an incredible article for startup issues--http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. do not worry that it says "10.3.9 or earlier". these steps are reliable for tiger as well. i hope that works for you.[:)]

Adobe claim CS3 will work, with a minor issue…

I think the 10.9 java updater is installing version 7.

  • Help with a ridiculous half-broken Yosemite/Mavericks install?

    Hello all,
I hate Yosemite. It's the Windows 8 of OS X...with broken DNS to boot.
I was troubleshooting some video issues, and decided to try and see if the problem persisted in Yosemite.
I downloaded the installer from the App Store and begun the install process for an installation on a flash drive.
After the install completed, my iMac rebooted, and to my horror everything was Yosemite-y. I shut down and unplugged the flash drive.
My suspicions were true, Yosemite had gunked up my Mavericks installation pretty bad. The boot logo was Yosemite, and my mac booted to a Yosemite installer at startup. I tried using the "kind of mac bootloader" that is invoked with the option-key, but my Mavericks install didn't show up. Luckily my Mavericks Recovery Partition was bootable, and after 2 hours of trying different ways to find and mount my Mavericks partition, I was in. The reason that this took so long was because at every step of the way, Yosemite tried its hardest to hide my Mavericks partition. (A process resembling the acts of Malware). My Mavericks partition boots, but when I startup my mac, I am greeted with the Yosemite apple logo, and Yosemite option-key bootloader, and then my Mavericks login screen.
How did this Frankenstein of an OS even become of existence? I checked, and yes, Yosemite installed onto my flash drive, NOT my SSD, but it still shoved all the boot crap onto my Mavericks install.
Is this even fixable, or should I restore from Time Machine? I'd rather not have to reinstall, but will if needed.

Do a backup, preferably 2 seperate ones.
Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Mavericks Install Confusion

    Hi JayBoy1978,
If you are still having issues with your Mavericks install, you may find the troubleshooting steps in the following article helpful (it's an older article, but most of the steps should still apply):

  • Never-ending spinning boot wheel after Mavericks install

After installing Mavericks on my Mid 2011 iMac, my boot screen stays on the Mac logo and the spinning wheel.
I did a clean install from a USB Mavericks boot drive to a 256 GB Pioneer SSD that I recently installed. The install was successful and I was able to do the initial bootup and adjust some settings. I was using Disk Utility on my internal 2 TB HDD to zero-erase the drive when my system went to a black screen; the mouse pointer was on screen but no mouse or keyboard inputs had any affect. I held the power button to shutdown the system, then turned it back on and encountered the hanging boot screen.
I have tried to boot into recovery to no avail, the spinning wheel just spins forever. Internet recovery freezes when I try to type my wireless router password; a wired connection starts with the spinning globe and grey progress bar, then goes to the spinning wheel that never stops. The Mavericks USB boot is now called EFI boot and results in the spinning wheel when I try to boot to it. Lastly, booting into safe mode is the infinite spinning wheel as well. Also, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM did not fix the issue.
The SSD that has Mavericks installed on it shows up when I hold the Option key during boot so I do not think it is a hard drive failure. Could I be wrong? Why am I unable to access Recovery? I have searched the support discussions for similar posts but have not found any like my problem. If there is one, please direct me to it. I am extremely frustrated at this point and would appreciate any help.

  • Mac Mini late 2012 upgrade to Maverick loop issue

    Hi there,
    I'm a Mac Mini noob.
Last night I downloaded Maverick and this morning I clicked install.
The Mac rebooted and then loaded then showed some error messages and then goes to password screen. I enter it and it says there was a problem and the MAC will be restarted.
It now just loads, shows the error message and automatically goes to password enter screen and then says theres an error and will be rebooted after I enter the correct password.
Can some one tell me whats wrong and how to fix or even to cancel this upgrade? I just want my Mac Mini to work again.
    Thanks
    L

Thanks BDAqua, I didn't try your method but...
Hmm I attempted the following and it was resolved and I managed to get back to my desktop and out of the restart loop (phew). I then pulled up my guts and double clicked the Maverick install again and this time it was successful. I followed this article which I found shortly after I posted the problem on here:
    http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/11/04/os-x-mavericks-upgrade-boot-loop-fix/
OS X Mavericks Upgrade BootLoop Fix
If you are upgrading to OS X Mavericks and get stuck in a boot loop that will not complete the installation, you may need to hit a special key combo to force the computer to complete the installation and upgrade process.
Gotta Be Mobile reader Steve Small reached out to let us know about the OS X Mavericks Upgrade bootloop problem, which forced his MacBook Pro to get stuck showing the odd text on a screen below, which looks like a OS X crash and an error message that says, “Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue startup.”
Read: How to Upgrade to OS X Mavericks
Ultimately this error prevented Small from upgrading to OS X Mavericks, as it did many other users. Thankfully if you get stuck in this OS X Mavericks boot loop you can press four keys at startup to reset the NVRAM and get past the boot loop.
OS X Mavericks upgrade boot loop and kernel panic can prevent an easy upgrade.
When you restart the Mac, press Option-Command-P-R until you hear the startup sound a second time. This will reset the NVRAM, which is where your Mac stores the following information.
    Speaker volume
    Screen resolution
    Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any.
In this case, resetting the NVRAM should clear up the boot loop issue which was possibly related to the startup disk selection stored here or to a kernel panic. The error screen shown at the top of this guide looks very similar to a kernel panic.
With this out of the way you should be able to continue the upgrade to OS X Mavericks. If the computer does not pickup where it left off you may need to go to LaunchPad and select Install OS X Mavericksagain. If you need to install it from scratch, here is our guide to a clean OS X Mavericks install.
Read: OS X Mavericks Best Features
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/10/24/20-best-os-x-mavericks-features/Apple released OS X Mavericks as a free upgrade to all Mac users with a compatible Mac in October. The software update is available for many Macs as old as mid-2007 are compatible with the free update. Users can download the 5GB installation file from the Mac App Store on any of these compatible devices.

  • MIDI interface not recognized after Mavericks install

    Hi,
I was using a Midisport UNO with OSX 10.6, connecting my keyboard with the Mac Pro and using programs such as Live and Garageband. After the Mavericks install, I have a bunch of obsoleted hardware. I understand that Midisport have not come up with a driver to support Mavericks just yet. But that is not my issue.
Today, I purchased a new MIDI interface, one that is class compliant and so requires no driver software. According to everything that I have read, from external literature to the interface's literature, the device should work just fine. But my Mac Pro doesn't recognize the device in the Audio and MIDI Setup utility. In fact, it recognizes the Midisport UNO just fine but that device is greyed out and I guess this means there is no correct driver.
I have noticed that the Mac Pro seems to turn off ports when supplying power to USB devices. Sometimes, the front USB ports will not connect my iPhone to iTunes, for example. When I restart, the power sometimes returns. So is this a power issue or does my connectivity problem lie with the MIDI interface?
    Thank you

I just purchased a new iMac running Mavericks. I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e, I have the same issue. It won't work or be recognized in adui/midi setup. It is there, just greyed out. I have searched everywhere for a fix. All you find is delete this, delete that. It worked fine on Mountain Lion, now it is useless to me. I have tried running it through a hub, doesn't fix the issue. I use power as opposed to just the USB, doesn't fix the issue. Can someone please point us in the right direction so we don't have to go spend more money on a midi keyboard because of Mavericks?

  • Lost document files after Mavericks install

After Mavericks install from App Store, document folders located in Dock are replaced with question mark icon; unable to locate files in Trash, iCloud, or Finder.
While I appreciate feedback on backups, never have had issues losing files before when installing apps from App Store.  Please advise.

I have the same problem. It just accured today, and i updated to Mavericks several weeks ago. I cant open several folders in Finder but when i right click on them it say that they contain eg. 5 Gbit... But i still cant see/open anything in some folders.
Also yesterday (right before i realised the Finder problem) my computer was slow and acting weird so I tried restaring it, and after it sayed that my start-up-drive (or somting like that) was nearly full. It wouldnt start propoly after that, but then after a few goes I got it to work... I have no clue whats going on really..

  • Finder Shows a "Scrambled" Screen After Mavericks Install

Installed Mavericks last night. Everything went fine except for the "completing installation" (after the machine reboots) where I got a message telling me "less than a minute to go" even though it took close to an hour. But it did finish and I was excited.
After the install, and prior to going to bed, I noticed that everything on the machine was very slow, performance-wise. But I was also aware that Spotlight was probably re-indexing my entire machine and didn't worry.
Just got up and decided to check out the machine. Performance-wise, it seems to be back to normal. However, just as I was about to breathe a big sigh of relief, I am noticing that the Finder (and only the finder so far, no issues with any other software that I've noticed) is having some major display issues. For instance, lets say I'm in my Downloads folder. Everything is in list format (my preference) nice, normal and neat. But if I grab a file (just a random JPG) and throw it in the trash... well, as soon as I do that everything goes berserk in that Finder window.
Have tried toggling the display options at the top of the window (icons, cover flow, etc...) and while it will change what shows up in the window, it is still scrambled. Ditto for navigating to a new window. If I choose desktop (currently empty) I get a plain white window but if I show any other folder with content in it, its the same scrambled view.
What's more is that when I attempted to take a screenshot, it doesn't render the scrambling, just puts a gray window in place of where the scrambling effect was. I have included that screenshot here and then I also took a literal photograph of my screen and attached that as well.
Can anyone help? I'm afraid of rebooting my machine for fear of making the problem worse. And I foolishly did not do all of the back-up steps recommended before a Mavericks install, so that may limit my options moving forward. Ugh.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Man, I'm afraid to say it but it is starting to look like the Finder glitch thing is the least of my worries. After spending a couple of hours on my Mac, I'm finding that my earlier statement about speeds being back to normal was incorrect. Everything is SLOOOOOW. Even typing in this Window is taking forever becuase there's a long lag, characters jumping, etc...
This seems to extend everywhere. Web pages are incredibly slow to load now. Apps are taking forever to load. It just took 90+ seconds to open Safari. Ugh.
A day ago I had a lightning fast machine with a reliable OSX that had never given me a single issue. Now I've got a slow, glitchy POS that wouldn't come out on top if it was facing off against a 10 year-old HP. Thanks a lot, Apple.
