Mavericks installation caused damaged disk..

This morning i tried to install mavericks update and during the installation it states that my disk is damaged, and everytime i repaired the disk.  I cannot click repaired disk it was grey out.  I tried to go on recovery mode and the same thing happens and safe mode shuts down my macbook.  Thus, i also tried to reinstall osx on recovery mode and it said "contact apple care".  There is nothing I can do and stupid as I am i did not do a back up.  Time machine in recovery mode do not allow me to do a restore and backup.  I dont know what to do and please help. How do i get out of the mavericks installation?

When you say 'mavericks update' do you mean you were installing 10.9 for the first time (over an older OS), or was it after an app store update inside 10.9?
It should be possible to hold the alt key at startup, then select a boot disk. That should stop the installer opening, however it may not boot from the main OS disk (the damage sounds too severe) so you will need to use alt again to get into recovery mode after a reboot (or cmd+R).
Do you have a spare disk to backup this Mac onto? It will need to be erased, there cannot be any files on it or we will need to use another method.
Do you have access to another working Mac? Do you know what Target disk mode is?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Basically I think the disk damage might be irreparable with Apple's tools. If it can be backed up, you can then erase & install again. If it cannot be backed up the only other options are to attempt disk repair utilities like Disk Warrior, or Data Rescue.
They are not free & will take time & another disk to recover the data onto.
Another option is that you erase the HD & reinstall the OS that was active before this update. You should be able to try to restore via Migration Assistant from the Time Machine copy.
I don't think Time Machine will restore over a newer OS, which is what could be stopping it at the moment.
The final option is to contact Applecare (if you are within warranty or have extended cover) or go to an Apple store.

Same here. I tried loading Mavericks on an early 2008 iMac. Apple Care says the failure is due to a bad hard drive. Even though I was not experienceing any problems prior to installing Mavericks. I’m skeptical. I must now take the iMac to Apple for repair.

  • Mavericks installer stuck on disk select screen

    Hi all,
I just attempted to update to the new os x mavericks. However, I've been stuck on the disk select screen for about a half hour and no disks are popping up to select. Is there anything I can do here? I tried rebooting with the old OS X and it says it is not able to. I'm unsure where to go from here, especially not without risking any damage to files, etc.

What is the error message, please? Time Machine won't be an option until after OS X is reinstalled and you enter the Setup Assistant. You aren't there yet.
I want you to quit the installer if it's running. Then try rebooting as follows:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select your normal startup disk.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Let me know if you can still boot from your old system. If not, then you need to do a reinstall of Mavericks.

  • Installation Error: Damaged Disk

    Hey mac users,
so I tried to upgrade to Mavericks today and full of excitement of course I didn't make a time machine backup. So here is what happened:
The Installation fails after 30 seconds with an Error that my disk is damaged and can't be repaired. Then I tried boosting in safe mode by holding shift at startup, after the short loading screen my macbook shuts down. In recovery mode I tried to use disk repair but it doesn't work, tells me i need to backup my data and may have to restore completely. I cannot repair it via the reinstall function because when asked what disk i want mountain lion to be installed on my HD is either not there or locked. I tried the time machine backup tool but it doesnt work, it searches for backups for hours with no progess, but there should be a backup somewhere.
So here I am, tried everything I could find but not one step closer to the goal. There are so many important files on the macbook. I hope someone here can help me solve this WITHOUT loosing my data and best case szenario without having to transfer my data on an external drive.
THANK YOU, any help, and i mean ANY, is highly appreciated!

By "somewhere" do you mean on an external disk?
How can i use time machine to create an update when I can only go into the installation of OS X Mavericks and the recovery mode?
So there isn't a way to quit the OSX setup and just go back to my normal previous desktop?
What happens when you do a "normal" boot of your Mac?  I think I'm missing that piece of information.

  • Can't install Mavericks, damaged disk, restore from Time Machine, unable to find destination disk. What to do?

After downloading Mavericks, tried installing, it told me that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. My only option was the Mac HD icon with a "?" on top of it, unable to verify disk. With the "continue" button grayed out, I hit the back button a few times in an attempt to start over. I went back to the install page and it started installing. 40 minutes later it was up and running. Every thing seemed fine. I tried opening GarageBand, I got the spinning wheel. Then a prompt page asking me to select a language. I selected English and the computer shutdown. It being late and I being frustrated, I decided to wait until morning.
On startup I got the message that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. This time there was no icon or anything to choose from.
I'm wondering if I need to use my original Mac mini, Mac OS X install DVD, or is it time for a trip to the Apple store.
    Ideas and options welcome.
    Thanks

It sounds as if your hard drive may have failed or may be failing. Boot your computer from the REcovery Disk by holding down the Command+R keys during the boot. From the Recovery drive you can run Disk Utility.  Once in DU select your hard drive then run "Repair Disk".
If errors are found and repaired run Repair Disk a second time.
If errors are found and not repaired you are going to need a more robust volume repair utiity such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius and an external drive to boot from to run the repairs or...

  • Mavericks installer damaged?????

    Starting to lose it here...
Downloaded Mavericks  AGAIN and as soon as it finished I got this message
"This copy of the install OS X MAvericks applications is damaged, and can't be used to install OS X."
What the actual FOCK? Im reading here about peoples HDDs being damaged but this appears to be a different problem...
Is there a way to fix this? I dont have a spare HDD to be backing up to either so surely that isn't the only fix for "the worlds most advanced OS".
    Any ideas anyone?

This is a very common problem with Mavericks and Mountain Lion. I had this issue so many times and many others probably did too. I went into Preferences-->Security&Privacy and select "Anywhere" under allow apps from.
If that doesn't work. You should repair disk permissions on your hard drive. There is a case where the files on the hard drive is not organized and therefore, the mac doesn't recognize it. Go into disk utility, select Macintosh HD or your mac partition, then press repair disk permissions. My macbook pro took 15 minutes for this disk repair process.

I am sorry for your hassle. Greg had the same problem last night. The installer reported a disk problem, so Greg tried to run Disk Repair (not a good idea in the middle of an installation!), and then he got the same unrecoverable error message.
We called AppleCare, but their only advice was to erase the drive and Restore from a Time Machine Backup.
I gather that you do not have a recent back up?  In that case, I think you had better take your laptop to an Apple store and get some help. A technician will have to copy your drive contents so that it can be reloaded after Mavericks is installed. Call them first in case you need an appointment.
Greg had a backup, so he purged and restored his drive. The AppleCare tech walked him through it.
Just a reminder to everybody to run Disk Permissions and Disk Repair before installing a new operating system. The system installer should really advise this procedure before commencing installation.
Also be sure to turn off Time Machine so that it doesn't fire up in the middle of the installation process. That will cause an unrecoverable disk error for sure!
I am waiting awhile before downloading Mavericks with the hope that any current glitches are addressed.
    Regards,
    Paula

  • How to remove a cancelled Mavericks installation from applications?

    Hi, > i'm very untechnical.
I started downloading Mavericks a while ago but changed my mind in the middle of the installation and pressed cancel since I'm afraid I have plugins on my computer that are not compatible with it. In my applications folder I can see the Mavericks and how long it had installed before I cancelled it, there's this little stripe.. I want to clean up a little and remove the mavericks download, afriad it takes up some diskspace or just ***** up for my apps on the computer, is this just something i created in my mind?  Anyway, if I delete it, I can always get it from apple support right..
When I try to delete the Mavericks from my application folder, it says "Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application and that it could cause some problems for my apps". Hm, is this an error message to ignore, or is there another way to get around this?
    Best,
    Leyla

    Leyla,
the partially downloaded Mavericks installer will only take up disk space; its mere presence won’t affect the apps on your computer.
Have you tried restarting your MacBook Pro, logging in, dragging the Mavericks installer to the Trash, and then emptying the Trash? Do you still get the “in use” message that way?

  • What is causing a disk error when saving psd files or writing to cache?

The problem only happens when running Photoshop CC (2104) and Bridge (actually these are the only two programs I really use my external drive for) during a save or write operation to an external hard drive.  I can work for hours, with multiple files open, saving, creating, etc. without a problem and then suddenly I'll get a message from Photoshop saying, "Could not save .... because of a disk error." or from Bridge saying, ".. unable to write to cache..".
When I quit and try to troubleshoot the problem, I find that, for some reason, Mavericks has put system files on my external (non boot) drive or, for whatever reason, thinks there is a system file on it.  Consequently, the drive cannot  be ejected (Error message: "... one or more programs may be using it...") and I cannot repair it using Disk Utility (Error message: " ... live file system repair is not supported").  I also cannot write to it (Error message: "... unexpected disk error has occurred (error code: -50)").  The problem persists even after quitting all other programs, which wouldn't surprise me if Mavericks thinks there is a system file on it.
I have force ejected the drive a couple of times but became concerned that I might be compounding the problem. Now I just restart my computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk.  (Don't know which is worse.)  Disk Utility either doesn't find a problem or, if it finds one, it repairs it.  After that, Photoshop and Bridge work fine for a while.
    System information:
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4GHz with 16GB RAM, 500 GB HD (recently upgraded)
    Apple Cinema Display
    Mavericks (up to date)
    G-Technology G-Drive (Gen 5) 2TB HD connected via Firewire 800 (latest firmware)
Unconfirmed observation: I believe the first few times this problem occurred, Firefox was up an running.  I made a point of quitting all programs except System Monitor when running Photoshop and Bridge and I can't remember having the problem again.  The the last time the issue occurred, today, however, Safari was up and running.
Is this an OS problem, a hardware (disk drive, cable, etc.) problem, a software problem (PS, Bridge) or some combination? I have put this much detail in the post hoping someone can share some insight into the cause.  I will be sending this report to Apple and G-Technology and I will report any resolution, if and, hopefully when, I find one.

The only thing that will cause a disk error is an actual error from the disk.
Photoshop is just telling you what that OS told it about the error.
It sounds like you need to boot off another disk and try to repair your disk.
Also, make sure you have a backup. And check the SMART status to see if it is failing and needs to be replaced.

  • Unable to download from AppStore, updates, etc.Messages 'the installer is damaged' to 'there might be a problem with file ownership and permissions.' I am the owner and only user of a new MBP. What could be going on?

Is anyone having the same type of problems I'm having with Lion. I have a new MacBook Pro, received 7 weeks ago, preinstalled with Leopard 10.6.7. I didn't migrate anything from my old iMac, wanted a clean install from the Apple Store. While there, I asked for the upgrade to Lion 10.7, however their system was down.
I  installed it myself, wirelessly about a week later, and Apple emailed me a receipt. Now, I've had to call support directly last week when I lost Mail, Address Book, was unable to open Preview or iTunes, among other problems. Seemed fixed after a session that baffled even the store tech.  Now I am unable to download or install the recent Mac updates for Lion, from the App Store, could not install Adobe Reader, etc. Messages range from 'A network error has occured - Check your Internet connection and try again' to 'The Installer is damaged and cannot open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.'  All fail and I'll probably have to call Apple again. I am frustrated beyond words.  Logs 'Install's runner tool is not properly configured as a setuid tool', domain errors, 'attempt to write a readonly database, and on and on. I have barely done a thing on this computer except search online for help with these problems. Safari gives me a 'You are not connected to the internet' too often. Diagnostics disagrees. I do see wi-fi problems in the forum. Disk and permissions were fine at the beginning of the earlier problems, checked first by support tech. I'm not sure if support tech even knew. I was just happy they were fixed. Anyone have these download and/or install problems after a 'clean bill of health' so to speak, only a week ago?

Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14176
    Sincerely,
    Delgadoh

  • The installer is damaged.  The installer can't open the package.  (FCS 2)

Hi, everytime I try to install Final Cut Studio 2 on my Mac Book Pro (10.6.2), I get this message:
    The installer is damaged.
The installer can't open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.
When i run Disk Utility, the package seems to have no problems. I'm sure the dmg is not corrupted since I was able to install this on my iMac G5 (10.5).
    Help!
    Thanks...

Locate the original disks and make a new dmg. I've had to do this occasionally. Not sure why the installer disk image breaks, but it does. In fact, I've had more problems with the Adobe disk images I've made. They seem to install once, and then break, which totally defeats the purpose of making them. The FCS dmgs I've made have lasted a while, and I've used them about 6 or 7 times. But I did have to recreate them twice in 3 years.
If it says the installer can't use it, best bet is, you won't be able to fix it. One thing you could try though, copy them to a desktop and then run them. It could have to do with trying to run them over a managed network.

I use Mavericks OS X 10.9.1.  Which of the following methods should I use to make a USB Mavericks Installer/Re-Installer?:
    1. How to Create an OS X Mavericks USB Installation Drive: lifehacker.com/how-to-create-an-os-x-mavericks-usb-installation-drive-145028002 6
(this method performs a "clean install") do I need to perform a clean install?

(does this method performs a "clean install?") do I need a clean install?
    3. The MacRumors Forums talks about "a copy of OS X Mavericks GM."  What is a "OS X Mavericks GM?"  What does GM mean?

Both methods are the same and are the steps Apple gives users to create a bootable USB drive with the Mavericks installer.
You only need to perform a clean install if OS X Mavericks is not working correctly. If this is not the case, you will just be reinstalling OS X Mavericks and you will keep all your files. To perform a clean install, first you need to erase the hard drive with Disk Utility.
    Angel Llorente wrote:

Ignore that. OS X Mavericks GM was OS X Mavericks Golden Master, which was the final version Apple gave to developers. That version is not available anymore, and you will be downloading 10.9.1 from the Mac App Store.

  • Battery Problems After Mavericks installation

So i have a MacBook Pro 8.1.  Before i installed mavericks (under mountain lion) i was getting about 4.5 hrs on a full charge (90% brightness).  After installing Mavericks i've had several problems.
Immediately, I received a "service battery" error.  I never had that problem before.
Battery life seems to be jumping all over the place.  One minute it will say that i have 30% left (and literally within a span of a min of two) it will drop to 17%. (with no noticeable app draining the battery - as confirmed by activity monitor).
The time remaining indicator takes about 5 min to indicate how much time left this is in contrast to booting in safe mode (where the indicator showed right away).
Battery life seems about the same (i.e. on a full charge i see it at about 4 hrs - but then it quickly drops 3.5 and than back up and then back down)
I did the following to see if i could "fix" the problem.
a complete battery cycle (calibration). - this seemed to get rid of the "service battery" indicator at least
    a PRAM reset (x2)
    an SMC reset (x2)
Disk / Permission verify and repair (no problems)
I booted off a 2nd internal HD which had a copy of Mountain Lion.  The above problems were nonexistent which leads me to believe that this problem is specific to Mavericks.
p.s. and No Spotlight (or any particular process) isn't consuming a large amount of energy.
All that being said, anyone have any suggestions?  At this point i can't trust how much time i really have on my battery.
For what it's worth i have installed a 3rd party SSD.  I noticed on a few different discussions that being a common thread with others having the same problem.

I have exactly the same problem with an MacBook Pro 8.2 for first time some days after a clean Mavericks installation.
I dont have a 2nd internal HD installed.
We need an answer from Apple.
