Mavericks is Sluggish

Anyone else finding Mavericks seems to struggle with multitasking in a smooth and fluid way? I have lag time between applications like I'm watching a slug. I want my powerful iMac back and feel this has been a major step back. The concept is great to communicate with other devices, but this is a desktop computer and I want desktop computer power.
After reading all the reviews for the new Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, and iPhoto, I will not update until I see that they are improved from what I have on the desktop now. I have always found them a bit weak compared to MS Office but for most applications they were fine. So if there was so much room to increase the power of these applications, why downgrade them essentially?
Thanks for any input to improve Mavericks!

  • Usb to dvi sluggish on Mavericks MBP 2011

So upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks has made my second external monitor slightly sluggish. I'm using a Diamond DisplayLink which was running flawlessly under 10.8.5. On the DisplayLink site there are some issues noted on 10.9 and a beta driver, although I'm not experiencing any of the issues listed other than just a slight lag. I'm also not getting any other resolution options for the monitor as I was before.
The problem isn't so bad it's going to make me revert back to Mountain Lion, but it's definitely a downgrade and lessens my workflow/experience on my current set up. Is this a driver issue or an OS issue? Anyone using another adapter without problems?
Btw, I'm using the Thunderbolt port for another monitor with no problems so that's not a solution to my problem.
Again no problems whatsoever on Mountain Lion.

New driver fixed the lag. I still don't get any other resolution options, but I can live with that.

There may be other software that is causing your problem, but the Blackberry software regularly crops up as being the cause of slow-downs or unpredictable behaviour. Try uninstalling it using the uninstaller that is hopefully available from Blackberry.
Hopefully others will spot this thread and have some other suggestions. There are a few entries for things I've never heard of (not that that means much ), but there's a chance that they are not compatible with Mavericks and could be contributing to the sluggish performance.

  • Since I upgraded to maverick, My iMac got sluggish specially when it wakes up ; anyone got a solution?

Since I upgraded to maverick, My iMac got sluggish specially when it wakes up and for instance, opening Iphoto. I suppose the new approach to more energy saving features could have something to do with this, but nevertheless, i wish I could choose to make it faster. Any clues?

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • PS Elements 11 Editor sluggish with Mavericks

Since I installed Mavericks my Photoshop Elements 11 Editor is sluggish to the point of almost being unuseable.  Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Other than my frantic Magic Mouse in the Organizer, PSE 11 was operating fine until I installed Mavericks.

The only thing I can suggest is to rebuild the prefs. Go to the editor menu:
    Edit >> Preferences >> General
Choose rebuild prefs on next launch. Then close the Editor and re-launch.

  • Mavericks made my MacBook Pro sluggish

Mavericks made my MacBook Pro sluggish. I've never seen my Mac this slow.
    I installed 2 weeks ago.
I have a MBP 2008 with 4 gig memory. And 500 gig drive. Only 250 oft he drive is used.
It take almost 4 minutes just for it to boot. There's at least a 4 sec delay in the mouse click. It really *****. Can I maybe remove the mavericks?

  • IMac running Mavericks 10.9.5; very slow, sluggish, apps freeze, mail is almost useless (gmail imap).  Here are the results from etrecheck:EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52) Report generated October 7, 2014 at 1:12:49 PM PDT  Hardwa

My iMac has been sluggish for a long time; finally got around to posting here for help!
I've tried using Onyx to clean it up and it helped a little, but it seems as if everything freezes up and forget about mail; I use apple mail with gmail (google docs) and it is constantly indexing, etc. I need to use the web browser to answer email and it's just not what I want from apple.
    Please help!
    Thanks

  • Mavericks: sluggish at opening apps after reboot

    So, here I go again.
I have narrowed down the problem to the following:
The only time apps take forever to open on my computer is after a restart.
After an app has been opened at least once, it will open immediately when you click on it.
So I guess my solution would be: run all your apps at boot rightaway, and leave the compute on
for the rest of the day?
Anybody else with a similar issue?
    Guys, be aware that I clean-installed Mavericks twice; I have downloaded all fresh apps from the App store;
I repaired permissions repeatedly and, of course, I rebooted more than once.
    Regards

Remove all apps from System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Same for HD > Library > StartupItems
Then restart your Mac to test.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • MBP Sluggish - Maverick or something else?

I've followed the various 'mac running slow' discussions and would appreciate assistance since I am encountering the same issues.  Loading anything (apps, web pages, finder screens, etc) takes so much longer, I would say, since installing Maverick OS, but don't want to assume that since it may be something else that is loaded but stealth.  Mine is MBP mid 2010, 2.53 ghz intel core i5, OSX 10.9.5, use TmMach to b/up.  Have not run etrecheck yet.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi mom2anw,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Mac. If you continue to have slowness or responsiveness issues, you may find the steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly

  • Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch, 4gigs of ram, Intel C2D perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), will update to Yosemite, slow down my iMac?

    Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch,
    4gigs of ram,
    Intel C2D
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    HDD 320gig's
iMAC is perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), with no lag, and no sluggish working, Multitasking is AWESOME (i have PC, with 8gigs of RAM, GeForce GTX570, etc etc), but i must say this MAC is running way better   a way way, faster and I am Loving it!!! I am using it for making music, and video editing, i am Using Final Cut Pro x, Ableton 9, Logic Pro x, and bunch of other apps and it is working perfectly, and i am so shocked how machine old like this can do that stuff better than any PC i had, and not to mention that I use more time on iMAC than on PC, i use Windows PC just for occasional gaming, but that is like 10% of time, so i use my MAC in 90% of time.
So, enough of my iMAC. I am wondering if I update it to Yosemite, will my iMac slow down, and not continue to work like on Mavericks? Will it become sluggish and unresponsive? Will it affect reliability and stability which  have on Mavericks? And will update delete my personal data (tons of Logic, Ableton and Garage band projects, and tons of Final Cut Pro projects), Applications (because I have some apps which is hard to find these days)...
I know bunch of you guys would tell me to backup my data, but i don't have External hard drive (they are pretty expensive in my Country), I have some friend who could borrow me External HDD, but they have their data on it, and they mostly use windows.. I did not use Time Machine yet, but i think probably it would format HDD on Macs partitions, so, i will do it on my own guys (don't judge me about that guys please)..
So if someone could answer me that, i will really appreciate that.
    Thank you, and best Regards!!
    Boris

I recommend you upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB for good performance with the apps you're using. Also keep a minimum of 25-30 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal system and application performance.
The maximum RAM a 7.1 iMac can address is 6GB, the OP can keep one of the 2GB DIMMs and then add a matching 4GB DIMM. If  the OP decides to do this, please only purchase from Crucial or OWC at www.MacSales.com.
However as described on a 8 year old iMac, I'd stay with Mavericks and then when considering upgrading upgrade to a more up-to-date Mac.

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
