Mavericks-made my computer so slow I cant use it!!

Question, my mac is virtually useless since Apple did an update to Mavericks, their operating system. It takes me 5 minutes to type a sentence because i get the spinny wheel.I can't open programs only one at a time or it is super super slow. Even when i do open a program it takes forever to do anything. I keep getting the spinny whel. For instance, it has taken me 15 minutes to type this because the words to not come right away, the spinny wheel for about 30 seconds and then they all come at once. I brought itinto the mac store and they said you have 2 slots of memory each containing 2 gb a total of 4 which was fine until they updated their OS. They told my computer is fine but I need more memory now. I do not see how this is my issue and why I have to buy more memory. Shouldn't apple take care of this issue so many people are having a problem with!!!???!!!  Anyways, I can barely use my computer or type anything because it takes to long. Apple does not sell or put in memory for you. They told me to go to crucial.com and buy two 4GB to put in the slots. That would be $92.00 for both. i dont think that is too bad but was wondering if anyone has found a solution. I have done all the clean ups and trouble shooting Here is the link to my apple info and memory site http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=BF297C0D31D926C3
Please let me know if there is a solution or if I just have to now buy more memory because Apple did this!  It is driving me mad!!!

Yes, I have done this before I will post for you!

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Doubts about going back to Leopard because lion made the computer very slow

hi i bought a macbook  pro on 2009 it came with leopard operating system. When lion came into the market i installed it but since then the computer is very slow.
I took it to an apple sotre and they told me that the memory was almost full so i bought an external hard drive where i have now all my music, photos and documents. But the computers is still very slow.
So im thinking about going back to leopard but i have some questions. i hope someone here help me
    1. will i experience any problem synchronizing my iphone 5 or my ipad4?
    2. will i be able to update itunes to the last version?
    3. how shall make a backup of my computer
    4. What do i have to do to restore leopard into my computer
    thanks!

How much RAM does it have..?
To find out, go up on your menu bar to: Apple > About This Mac
If you have no other problems and plenty of free HDD space? Then 2GB of RAM will feel real slow running multiple Apps in Lion or Mountian Lion and you should try upgrading the RAM 4GB or more before moving back to Snow Leopard.

  • Why has maverick made my iMac so slow

Does anyone know why the Mav update has slowed my machine to work like windows!!!
Its a 2011 21" Imac is there anything we can do or our apple working on this?

You will need to provide more information to see if anyone can help you.
For example, fill in your profile, define "slow," give more specifics.
Incidentally, as far as I know, Apple is not "working on this." OS X 10.9 runs just fine here and on most Apple computers.

  • I responded to a request to update my computer yesterday and now cant use Reunion 8! Is Apple going to fix this problem?

I am unable to use Reunion 8 since yesterday when I responded to a request to update my computer! Now it will start to open and then quit. The makers of Reunion tell me it has affected a lot of users. Is Apple going to fix this "security" update? All of my genealogy info is in that program! I have backed it up on a disc but not since May 2011.

I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

  • Installed Mavericks. Computer is slower, CCleaner not compatible, keyboard not always compatible.

I have recently updated to Mavericks from Mountain Lion. My computer is slower, my key board sometimes isn't compatible, and CCleaner from the App Store isn't compatible at all. HELP!!!

All software maintenance software should be removed.  The only maintenance any Mac needs is a backup, which I hope you did before installing Mavericks.  If you didn't, unfortunately someone will have to back you up from their disk, and then try to isolate why you are having problems.

  • I made eight radio buttons exclusive by each other. But It made the orignal program slow down.

I made eight radio buttons exclusive by each other. But It made the
original program slow down. I insert them parallel to the original
program, ie, they are excuted at the same time, I think. But I found
that the speed before I insert it is faster than after. I think If I
use the exclusive radio buttons made by ni , the program will execute
faster. but there aren't eight radio buttons I can choose. How can I
do ? Or How can I make some changes to the slide that I will get the
    result like NI does?

You'll have to give the processor some time. In the parallel loop, put a
'Wait (ms)' from the Time & Diaglog pallete. Wire e.g. 10 to it, and the
computer has some time to do other processes (like the other loop, and
    updating the user interface).
When you have something like this, you can open the task manager (win nt,
win 2000). If it it this problem, the processor uses 100% processor time.

    Wiebe.

  • Yosemite has made my MacBook unbearably slow

    Hi there,
Like other Mac users I have found my MacBook Pro has become so slow it is virtually unusable since installing Yosemite.  I installed it several days ago and the problem has not resolved.  I have run EtreCheck in the hope that someone might be able to spot the problem.  I would really appreciate some advice on how to bring my machine back to a reasonable speed. Presumably Apple will be working on a fix, given how many people have this problem??
    Problem description:
Since I installed the new Yosemite OS my MacBook Pro has virtually ground to a halt. Everything is so slow the machine is now almost unusable - rather like dial-up connection days of old. I’d love to be able to fix this!

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • TS2951 I installed Maverick on my computer cause it kept asking as an update don't like it how can i go back of what I use to have

I Installed Maverick on my computer cause it kept asking me as an update to the computer I dont like it and if i do something on my I Pad it happens on my computer to how can go back

    Hopefully you made a backup.
This is what I had to do to rever to Snow Leopard from Mavericks:
make an appointment with a genius at an Apple Store
they had to do a deep wipe (not the exact correct term, but deep was part of it) of my iMac, then reinstall Snow Leopard over top of it.  We tried to restore from backup during the install process, and ended up in a total mess.  So we had to start over and do another deep wipe, then they reinstalled Snow Leopard for me.
You need to bring some proof that you own Snow Leopard with you, then they will install it for free (and do it much faster than you can, because they install the latest version straight away

  • What is going on with Apple? I've just downloaded their Mavericks and my computer is performing so badly, I'm wondering if Mavericks is some sort of diabolical malware! How can I get Mavericks out of my computer?

What is going on with Apple? I've just downloaded their Mavericks and my computer is performing so badly, I'm wondering if Mavericks is some sort of diabolical malware! How can I get Mavericks out of my computer?

What is your year and specs of your Mac Pro?
    How much RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and have negative effects on system performance.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary.
    They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
These apps potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software company's that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!

For some reason, your Mac doesn't recognise that a keyboard is present, so it looks for a wireless keyboard. The question is, why doesn't your Mac recognise that a keyboard is attached?
First, you need to make sure you remove all peripherals, especially USB peripherals (the keyboard is on the USB bus). Then restart holding down the Shift key. This should boot in Safe mode. If the computer boots normally (not in safe mode) and the keyboard is still not working, try resetting the SMC
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964>
If that still doesn't fix the problem, then the keyboard (or its controller) is probably damaged and needs to be replaced.

  • Clean installed mavericks but it is dead slow now

I recently bought an old Macbook pro. It had previously installed with 160GB(7200rpm) of hard drive.
I updated this with mavericks 10.9.3 . And it was perfectly fine. rather super perfectly fine. Yesterday I upgraded its internal Harddrive with 320GB from my other laptop because I needed more space for my tutorials and data etc.
I installed mavericks on my newly installed HDD320GB(5200rpm). using USB8GB-2.0. Now my MBP is dead slow.. I installed mavericks, 3 times, but still slow slow and dead slow.  It took 6 mintues to boot. previously about 4 ~5 hrs in installation..
After booting, I checked in Activity Monitor. and i see CPU on the bottom says.
    System: 1.21%
    User: 0.95%
    Idle: 97.XX%
But If i keep staring on this It varies but still Idle is around 92% ~ 98%. and sometimes 45% to 70% I don't know which application is consuming my processor..
And If I open any application during this Activity MOnitor process it show fairly used processor like. idle is about 80%. But still every application responds too late.
Luckily I didn't remove mavericks from the older 160GB HDD. I booted my computer from that HDD as using external USB converter. But this time once again may macbook pro is super fine. It booted in 18seconds around. every application works great.
I want the same speed on my internal HDD, what is the problem...
I don't know what's wrong either with my newly installed 320GB-HDD or what.?
    I'm using
    2.5Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB- RAM,
NVIDIA GeForece 8600M GT 512 MB
    OSX 10.9.3
Can somebody please tell me the solution, what's wrong with it.? I'm almost crying :(.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
