Mavericks: Mail + Gmail = still terrible!

I have the recent Mail update installed (Version 1.0), but Mail app still works terribly with Gmail. A whole bunch of messages that are supposed to be in Inbox randomly show up only in Archive folder. If I access Gmail in browser they are displayed correctly in Inbox. What's going on? Why can't they make Maill work with Gmail?

I can't say that the discussion you referred to was very helpful for me.
One of the suggestions was to disable Show in IMAP for All Mail in Gmail Settings. Doing that actually emptied all email boxes in Mail on my Mac, after which Mail started re-syncing everything over. When it was finished, the Archive folder for Gmail was still empty leaving me with no way to access archived messages on Gmail server from Mail app.
I have enabled Show in IMAP for All Mail back. Hopefully this will bring back all archived emails in Mail... It looks like Mail is about to re-sync everything all over again. Such a waste of time...
Regardless, I'm thinking of ditching Mail app altogether. Even if there is a way to make Gmail work properly with Mail app in Mavericks, it's very far from straightforward. It's certainly does not work "out of the box".
What happen to "Apple: It just works"? Now it's more like "Apple: Sometimes it works, and sometimes it just doesn't."

  • Using mavericks, mail, gmail. Moved messages reappear in inbox, then move.

Using mavericks, mail, and gmail and have been through the latest configuration recommendations (all mail is shown, etc.. When I drag a message from the inbox to a folder/label in mail it will reappear in the inbox briefly, then move to the destination folder. That odd bounce back to the inbox is amazingly annoying.
    Ideas?

Whenever I dragged messages from my Apple Mail Inbox to the Apple Mail Archive Gmail All Mail folder, they were returned to my Apple Mail Inbox within a few minutes. I read a number of posts here, and fiddled with settings in Apple Mail and Gmail, and made a host of other changes until I was red in the face, but no luck.
Then I reasoned that DRAGGING the mail items might be the problem, so I conducted an experiment which showed that whenever I dragged items to new folders, Gmail was not updated with the new label, and so the mail ended up back in my inbox. Whenever I MOVED mail items by means of the menu system, the mail moved successfully. Therefore it appears that Apple Mail does not change the mail labels if the mail is dragged, hence the original problem.
With this information, I opened Apple Mail and Gmail (in a web browser) and manually reconciled the Inboxes with each other. Once they were identical, I then customized the Toolbar in Apple Mail to include the Archive Icon, to make moving mail from the Inbox to the Gmail Archive All Mail, easy.
This solved the problem for me.

  • Mavericks mail gmail move to All Mail

Since the upgrade to Mavericks, the backspace button moves gmail IMAP messages to Trash, and not All Mail like it used to.
How can I go back to the old behaviour... I want to archive my mail with the backspace key, not delete it.
Crazy crazy silent change in behaviour with very bad UX.

I wish I could say I'm as shocked as you. I switched to using Apple computers a couple of years ago because of the build quality and the fact that if nothing else the OS at least compares favourably to the competition.
However, the thing that made me hold off on this for so long was their infamous insistence on rail-roading users through unpopular, inconsistent or just plain awful UX choices. There's a reason that nearly every official Apple-made App on the OS X and iOS App Stores has about two stars, and thousands of one star reviews.
Switching to a third party mail app, at least until this is resolved (presumably as a much-touted "new feature" in 10.10).
edit: Have tested kakgungor's plugin and it works perfectly, definitely worth it for anyone who still wants to use Mail.

  • Mavericks Mail sync with Gmail - lost folders

I use gmail as my main email provider. I have had this syncronised to my MacBookPro, iPad and iPhone for a few years. It worked smothly. Whenever I created, modified or moved mail folders in the Mail app it was replicated in gmail.
I recently updated my Mac to Mavericks and continued using mail as normal. Last night I decided to reorder my Mail folders to put the folders I access the most higher up the list.
On doing this I lost ALL of my emails from EVERY folder, inluding the inbox. I was mortified. That was years of filed emails gone. I think they were moved to a trash folder (so they still exist, but mixed in with trash).
I have since read that this is a fault with Mavericks.
I really need to restore the emails to the folders they were in. Some of the emails were very important.
Can anyone advise how I can get these emails back to the folders they came from?
    Hope you can help

I am running "Mavericks" 10.9.5 on a new MacBook Pro, but I've had a similar problem with earlier computers and versions of the OS (10.8.x): Some of my emails that I keep stored on folders in my GMAIL mailbox appear scrambled in "Mail". The Header and subject line showing up in the preview pane (Message list) belong to one message, but the first two lines in the same pane belong to a totally different email (from a different sender). When I click on that message, I find that the whole message that is being displayed is from that other sender - header, subject line, "From" fields and body. No trace of the mail that should belong to the header and subject line in the preview pane! An example is shown at the bottom - the text starting with "Save $50..." is from a completely different sender and has nothing to do with "SAIL Magazine" - and the "SAIL Magazine" email is nowhere to be found. If I go to GMAIL's web interface, I can find BOTH messages without problem. (In case this is a useful hint: GMAIL in its infinite wisdom decided to NOT mark those particular 2 emails as "important" - shown by a yellow flag in the web interface for several OTHER emails). I should say that my setup is to use IMAP (imap.gmail.com), and all my folders are replicated on any of the several devices I use (two different Macs and iPhone) as well as on the web interface. Surprisingly, the specific problem shown below exists ONLY on my new MacBook Pro with Mavericks - both my other Macbook and my iPhone show both emails normally - but I had similar mess-ups on my other Mac as well. So it looks like that somehow MAIL and GMAIL still do not work properly together with IMAP - I would have thought this problem would be widely known and would have been fixed by Apple eventually? Anyway, any hints on how to fix this glitch would be much appreciated!  - Seb

  • Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.
Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?
    Thanks,
    SF

I have the same problem. The recent Mavericks update fixed the original Gmail problem (of not being able to get rid of mail from the in box), but this problem is there and very frustrating. Exactly the same as the original post - Mail on my Mac does not reflect the emails filed, moved, deleted etc from my iPad or iPhone. Gmail, iPad and iPhone are all in perfect sync, but the Mac is not.
The only way to force the Mac into line is to QUIT Mail and relaunch.
(By the way, I don't have any anti-virus on my machine, so it's nothing to do with that - its a Mavericks issue).
I have been looking at alternative mail clients as I have now lost all faith in Apple Mail. (I am committed to IMAP and Gmail, on 3 different email accounts).
Yersterday I tried Outlook (as I happen to have a copy with Office-2011 for Mac). I liked it apart from the fact that it won't work with iCloud contacts... so its no good for me.
I'm looking at Mailplane now.... doesn't seem to be available via App store, but I'm going to try a free 15 day trial I found online. I'd say that's how long Apple has to fix this problem as far as I'm concerned.

  • My Mail.app Still Won't Work Well with Gmail IMAP

My Mac Pro is completely updated to Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2, the latest update, but Mail.app still works really poorly with my gmail IMAP account.
Mail.app sometimes fails to pick up new mail for as much as a couple hours at a time, while Mail on my iPad is having no problem.
I've tried quitting and restarting Mail, taking the account offline and then back on, and using the synchronize command, but nothing forces Mail to pick up recent mail until all of a sudden, a couple hours later, it's working fine again.
I'd consider switching to a 3rd party mail client, but none of them have the combination of features that I like in Mail.
This happens at least every couple days.
Is everyone still seeing this kind of flakiness in Mail?

When you did the 2.1 update did it restore your backup file onto the iPhone?
If so you may want to backup iPhone, Restore, Setup as new iPhone and see if this provides better response. Post back

  • Gmail and Mavericks - mail disappearing

I "lost" all my mail after Mavericks update, then spent considerable time recovering from Time Machine all my mail. After 4 days, all my gmail was removed yet again from my archived folders. Visible from both Apple Mail and Safari access to the mail server prior all mail has now vanished. Now I'm faced with recovering yet again (about 2 days work) and I suspect only to have it "deleted" from gmail yet again. Is anyone else having similar issues? Ideas on resolution?
    Many thanks

Users are still posting mixed results. Some with no issues and others reporting number of messages downloading to be in the thousands. Mavericks Mail likes the All Mail folder to be checked. If your Inbox has thousands of messages, I suggest you log into your Gmail account in Safari and archive (move to All Mail) most of your Inbox before adding the account. See my blog article on setting up Gmail. You can also read the comments from other users to see what worked for them.
If you test in a new User this gives you a clean environment to add the account. If it works as expected in the new User, add Gmail in your regular User. If you run into problems you know there is some cleanup that is needed.

  • How do I get my ALL MAIL gmail folder back in Mac Mail after upgrading to Mavericks?

    Hi
I've upgraded to Mavericks - very cool !........ but my Mac Mail gmail ALL MAIL folder seems to have vanished in my Mac Mail listings.
Any advice how to get it back?
    N)

It seems its all in the new ARCHIVE folder which shows up now.......but dont delete mails in the inbox as that really deletes them and they go to TRASH.  So you have to manually MOVE TO ARCHIVE to ensure it finds itself in ALL MAIL on the gmail server.  Hope that helps?

  • Mavericks mail will not allow me to add a gmail account

    Help!
I am using running OSX Mavericks, including the new version of Mail 7.0 (1822). I cannot add a GMail account. Going through Mail: Preferences: Accounts, I give the information, but then get told:
There was a problem setting up the account.
Unable to verify account name or password.
If I click ok (the only option), Mail quits, so I cannot use the Connection Doctor to see what else is happening.
All my other programs that access the internet work, and I can access google calendar, for example, via BusyCal.
There must be something simple happening.... By the way, Mavericks Mail works perfectly on my machine at work!
    Suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Roger

I had the same issue...I called apple support and they gave me the following instructions. Seems to be working perfectly fine.
    - Go to Apple Mail
    - Hit on Preferences, go to Accounts and hit the "+" button
    - Select "Add other mail account", and hit continue
    - Enter your Full Name, email address, and password (DO NOT HIT CREATE)
    - Push down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT"
    - It will route you to the Incoming Mail Server Info window, here you will type in the Mail Server as: imap.gmail.com. Again type in your user name (complete email) and password. And again, hold down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT".
    - Then it wil route you to the Outgoing Mail Server. Type in the Outgoing Mail Server as: smtp.gmail.com, and again your email and password.
    -Hit Create
Once you see the email account on your Apple Mail sidebar, go to compose a new message and send yourself an email to the new email account from your new email account
This worked for me and synced all my folders. Hope it works for you as well.

There is a large thread relating to Gmail, but nothing that sounds like that.
Nobody here knows what Apple is going to do.
You might try removing the Gmail account and then add it back in.

  • Mavericks Mail erased sent Gmails

I am having big trouble with Mavericks Mail client. Although I couldn't find anyone having the same issue, I am pretty sure the problem is on Apple's side. The Mail client completely erased all my sent mails from my Gmail account. This is 10 years of data. Cheked it on the web. The data is lost, nowhere to be found.

Thanks, I tried both sides Apple and Google. The messages were erased. They did not move to the trash or to another folder. I am sure that the account wasn't cracked, there were no funny access records. The problem occurred with the Mavericks update. I never had a problem with Moutain Lion before.
I lost the messages in chunks. The first time I noticed it when I searched my sent mails and discovered that the most recent year or so was missing. After a reboot I lost another year. I immediately disconnected Mail from my google account. I left my other devices (iPhone, iPad) connected and everything worked fine. After a few days, I dared to reconnect my Mac Book / Mail again and it seemed OK  at first. Now all my sent mails are gone.
I cannot proof it, but I am pretty sure the problem resides on Apple's side. It's not funny to loose 10 years of data. This is a serious issue for me.

  • Mavericks Mail App and Gmail folders

I have installed Mavericks on my MBA.  Now in the mail app, when I drag messages from the inbox to a gmail folder, they leave the inbox.  But if I click off of the inbox and then click back on it - they reappear in the inbox.
    Anyone else having this problem?

This is one of the largest bugs in Mavericks’ Mail app, which affects Gmail accounts and Google Apps email accounts. This used to work just fine in previous versions of OS X, so it is a brand new problem in Mavericks:
Mail can’t delete messages from the Inbox unless Google’s “All Mail” folder is visible in Apple Mail. If you try to delete a message from the inbox, the message only disappears temporarily, then reappears moments later. It seems like Apple Mail never removes the “Inbox” label from the deleted messages, so the messages just keep reappearing back in the Inbox over & over again.
The workaround is not a desirable one: It requires the user to make Google's “All Mail” folder visible to IMAP clients (via Gmail's "Settings>Labels” page). However, this workaround is not desirable because of 2 bigger problems:
    (1) Making the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail will suddenly make dozens of gigabytes of emails start taking up valuable hard drive space, because every single email that has ever been archived on Gmail/Google Apps will suddenly be written to the Mac’s hard drive. This can be a real problem on a machine with a small hard drive, such as the MacBook Air. Hiding the “All Mail” folder prevents these messages from taking up valuable hard drive space.  Not to mention that all of these messages are DUPLICATES OF MESSAGES THAT ALREADY APPEAR in other IMAP folders, so showing the "All Mail" folder in Mail is absolutely pointless.
    (2) Whenever the “All Mail” folder is visible, every new message that comes into the “inbox" also shows up as a new message in the “All Mail” folder as well, so new messages appear like they are coming in twice. Also, users are forced to mark their messages as “read" in two locations: the “Inbox" AND the “All Mail” folder.
The ideal solution would be for Mail to operate how it used to operate: Users should be able to delete messages from the Inbox, without having the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail.
Please report this bug to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback and hopefully they will fix it in a software update soon!

  • Why [Google mail] folder still appears after updating to Mavericks in Mail

    Hello,
I have updated to Mavericks. After configuring Mail to sync with my Google account, the folder [Google Mail] is still present in Mail and the Important and Starred labes are in it. However, both subfolders, Improtant and Starred, are not syncronizing.
I have checked in Goolge and Important and Starred are set to work with IMAP. The strangest thing is that those folders should not be inside [Google Mail], but they are in my case. Does someone could help me to remove [Google Mail] folder and make Important and Starred work?
    Thanks !

Several times I've re-entered my passwords under Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud and it won't save since I've installed Mavericks.  Also, the iCloud icon in the left column in Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud is greyed out but allows me to click on it to set-up.  When I click on iCloud the password is filled out but the "Enable this account" check-box is not checked.  I check it, and all seems correct.  The icon is no longer grey, the password is correct, the "activate this account" check-box is checked.  Then, when I launch mail, notes etc. I'm still prompted to re-enter my apple ID.  The log-in loop continues.  For years my keychain has worked perfectly.  What has changed in Mavericks?

  • Mavericks Mail.app + Gmail = Random Duplicate Sent Messages

I'm working with a user here with a brand new Retina MBP. Has 3 email accounts loaded in Mail:
    - personal @gmail account
    - corporate Google Apps account
    - iCloud
The iCloud account is pretty much unused.
Randomly - though increasingly frequently - when she sends mail using the new rMBP, 2-3 messages are being generated just seconds apart.
I can see from the headers the message IDs are different. Also, the recipients complain about receiving multiple identical messages.
It's worth noting that she also has a retina iPad and iPhone 4s that both have these two Google accounts loaded.
Software is up-to-date including the mail patch from last month. We've turned off syncing drafts at Gmail due to related Mavericks mail buginess.
I am fairly certain the duplicates only occur when she sends from the rMBP. Messages and replies sent from the browser or either iOS device don't get duplicated. The accounts are also loaded into a PC/Outlook (the system I switched here away from), but that system has not been on for several weeks now. The duplicates did not appear until we set up the rMBP.
So yes, it would appear to be a Google server issue, but only happens when using Mavericks.
Anyone else with a similar experience or thoughts to offer?

Maybe this will help. If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.

  • Mavericks Mail update (build 1822): constant folder syncing with Gmail IMAP

The Mail update to build 1822 seems to fix previous major problems for Gmail IMAP.  I've changed my Gmail settings (on the Gmail side) back to my original setup: "All Mail" now is turned off for display in the Mail client. That allows me to search messages and see search results in Mail that show the folder in which search result messages reside...instead of "All Mail" for every message matching the search criteria, as it showed when "All Mail" was turned on.
    Two remaining problems for me.
1 -- Regularly and frequently, Mail goes out to the Gmail IMAP server and checks every single mail folder and syncs with them. It doesn't matter that the folders haven't been changed or that I haven't sent, received, or viewed any mail...if Mail is open, it checks and syncs frequently.  Now, very few folders have new filed messages, so bandwidth use of this behavior presumable is low...but it sure is annoying. You can see it happening by choosing "Activity" under the Window menu, and watching for a while.
2 -- I can't change the display order of Gmail folders in the left-hand column of the Mail app display.  The order is fixed and it doesn't seem to follow any rule I can detect.  The folder display certainly isn't alphabetical or by date.
Suggestions or insight about these two challenges are welcome.
    Thanks!

I've got no solution on problem one (sorry for both of us), but might for problem two.
I have four IMAP accounts in mail: 2 gmail, one google hosted app, and one Corporate.  Mavericks mail (with update) constantly checks all IMAP accounts, whether gmail or not.
This contant IMAP freak out may be related to the solution I have for you on Gmail folder sorting. I've tried diabling the account  (in preferences), quitting mail, then restarting mail, and then re-enabling the account. Let mail finish its IMAP freak out, then drag the folders where you want them.  They may or may not appear to change succesfuly.  Wait a while (so Mail does the IMAP dance again), quit Mail, restart Mail. If it looks good great, if not, do the whole disable / re-enable account thing.  Sounds mental, and pretty much is, but it worked for me. I cobbled this together from hints on previous Mail version / IMAP problems.
My pet theory--which is entirely unsubstantied by any evidence whatsoever--is that Mail's local cache is not being updated properly while in use, and the flood of IMAP traffic is leaving the folder structure changes in limbo until you force changes with the quit / preference change. Whatever the cause, it seems to affect non Gmail as well (for at least me).
