Mavericks Mail group address issue

Since upgrading to Mavericks, the method to NOT show all email addresses in a contacts group does not work.  We have unchecked the show all group email addresses in Mail Preferences, but just typing in a Contacts group in the TO line shows only the group name (like Friends), but when the actual email is sent, all email addresses are visible to all recepients.  This has always worked in the past.
We realize that you can start your new email by Control-clickling the group in Contacts, but that is a poor work-around, since you can't start the email first.
Anyone have a fix?  We have duplicated this on both our MBAs.

I have the SAME Problem, exactly, very frustrating.
Before Mavericks, this has not happened.
Thank you
Harry

  • Mavericks mail group problems

When I address an email to a Contacts group and hit Return, Mail lists the whole group correctly in most instances. However, for random groups, It lists members multiple times (same email address each time.) The group itself lists members correctly. I have tried turning Mail off and on, turning the computer off then on, and deleting the group and recreating it member by member, but get the same results. In one case, the problem just resolved itself without my doing anything I can remember, but just that once, and with a different Group than is now malfunctining. Any ideas?

    FYI The upcoming 10.9.2 update to OS X Mavericks (since beta 3 build 13C44 that is available to developers now!) seems to fix the mail re-indexing issue for a few of us;

  • Mail: Group addresses should not expand

Suddenly, Mail chose to expand group addresses, even though the relevant box in Preferences —> Composing is unchecked.
I have ‘checked’ the box, quit Mail, relaunched Mail, composed a test message and send it (of course all the addresses were there). Then unchecked the box, quit Mail, relaunched, and composed another test message. Still, all the addresses were there...
    Any suggestions?

That's why the email protocol has always had Bcc instead of some hack crrated by an OS developer.

  • Mail Group addresses not the same as Address Book contact group addresses.

A group in my Address Book does not show up in my Mail address book the same. The Mail addresses for my group includes ALL my contacts. How do we fix this problem? I am afraid to send a group e-mail in case it goes to everyone else in my address book. We set up the group in the address book via drag and drop.

That's what I thought.... Although when I log on to Mobile Me through the internet the sender's name there appears just like it does in my address book, so I thought there would be a way to set it in mail.

  • Apple Mail group addresses

I manage a distribution list of 200 emails. How do I send to group without showing all the individual emails in the address bar? I tried to just sending with the group name but it would not go.

I saw your 2011 post in which you said that you manage a distribution list of 200 addresses. I assume that you've created the group in the "Contacts" application. Is that the case?
I've been wondering whether there's a maximum number of addresses that you can have in a "Contacts" group, because I've had some trouble with some people in my group of about 65 not receiving my messages.
Do you have all 200 addresses in a single "Contacts" group?
Does anyone else have information about a maximum -- effective -- size for a "Contacts" group being used to send messages?
    Thanks,

  • Mavericks Mail messages hidden?

A website has sent me an auto email to reset a password 3 times today. Each time I hear the message alert but cannot find the message anywhere. I'm using Mavericks Mail, the address is [email protected] so this isn't a Gmail issue. There are no rules on the account. The search tool doesn't find the message plus it isn't showing in iCloud. Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any solutions you could recommend?

I've seen blank messages tied to Spotlight issues. I suggest that you delete all Spotlight cache files and let Spotlight build a new index.
HOW TO RE-INDEX YOUR SPOTLIGHT CACHE FILES
    Option 1)
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    *  Click Spotlight.
    *  Make sure Messages & Chats is checked under the Search Results tab.
    *  Click the Privacy tab.
    *  Drag your drive to the list. Wait a couple of minutes.
    *  Remove the item you added.
    *  Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially dragged to the list.
    Option 2)
Copy the text below and open Terminal (in /Application/Utilities). Paste the code into the Terminal window at the prompt.
    sudo mdutil -E /
You will be asked for your administrator password (and if you've never used the sudo command you'll need to accept the warning presented). When you type your password, it will look like nothing is being typed. That's normal. Once you've typed your administrator password, press Return.
This will completely remove the Spotlight index and force a new one to be created. Probably not necessary, but I would immediately quit Terminal and restart your Mac.
    Option 3)
This option also allows you to reset permissions on your files where Disk Utility only corrects Apple files.
Use OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to reset Your files and folder permissions
    SUMMARY:
Depending on your Mac and the contents of it's hard disk, re-indexing may take several hours. Doing this overnight is a good option if you have a large drive.
You can tell if it's still in progress by simply looking at the Spotlight menu: There's a blinking dot in the middle of the magnifying glass while indexing is occurring. You can also open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities and type in md in the search filter.
Until this process is finished, Spotlight won’t know the contents of your disks.

  • Group address - size limit

I have a reasonably small group address - just about 16 names. But mail program will not allow me to add any more names (& addresses) to it. Is there a limit on the number of words (characters) in a group address? I read comments from people who have school groups, church groups, so I must be doing something wrong. Any suggestions?
Another problem - if I include the group addresses with other addresses in my "To:" box, it gives me a message saying that there is a problem with some addresses. By trial and error, I have found out that the name of the group - e.g. "Sewing" - needs to be deleted and only the ladies' names & addresses can be in the "To:" box. I also have to delete the at each end of the address. Thanks

    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Austin,
Sorry - I should have been clearer.
I am referring to composing emails in the .mac mail program. I have no problems with the Mail Program - Version 2.1.
There is no option to turn off "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" in the .Mac mail prog. I use this program whenever I am away from home in WI, and as you have probably seen from my profile, I am often in Tralee. I also travel to Michigan on a regular basis, so I use my .Mac mail a lot. I know this prog. has been improved immensely lately, with the email address recogniton feature(getting away from the meagre 10 quick addresses), so I thought the group address feature might be improved also.
Thanks anyway for your advice and maybe someone else has had my problem with .mac mail group addresses.
    Regards

  • Has anyone had an issue with group addressing in OS X 10.9 Mail

Has anyone had an issue with group addresses in Mail after installing Mavericks?  Both my MBP-15 and my Mac Pro stopped automatically filling in the addresses when I typed the name of the group that I have in Contacts, after updating to Mavericks.  Prior to updating they worked just fine.

    Hi,
I just found these work arounds.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5490015?tstart=0
The first is appropriate if you want to send as an undlisclosed resicpient. The second method shows all addresses.

  • Mavericks Mail-cannot scroll down to select a group by holding mouse button.

I do not like the new Mavericks mail. When I attempt to hold the left mouse button and scroll down to select a group, the program automatically locks onto the first message I touch and moves it. Prior to Mavericks scrolling was an easy process. This new mail is very clumsy and I have to select one message, then hold shift key, then selelct the last message in the group. ....Clumsy and slow.
Does anyone know a workaround for this? The tutorials don't address it and the "What's new in Mail?" file doesn't either.  If there is not a workaround, is there a way to disable the Mavericks configuration in Mail and go back to regular mail? I'd appreciate any tips or help on  this.

Okay, I tried deleting the Finder preferences first (along with a handful of other preference files that I knew were no longer needed), and it seemed to help--at first. But eventually, all the same problems started happening again, so I concluded that it was necessary to just start with a fresh (empty) preferences folder. As you know, this is a pain to deal with, but I limited my pain by moving all the old preferences files into a folder on the Desktop rather than simply deleting them. That way, I could just put back any missing preferences that were too hard to recreate. Restoring all of my preferences with new (uncorrupted) prefs files will be an ongoing process, but the good news is that this effort (so far) seems to have solved the problem. Mail is responding to all my clicks, even when I switch between different apps and different spaces.  :-)
Now that things are working correctly, I notice that when I switch between apps and/or spaces, the selected app (or the frontmost app in the new space) will show an active state for its window, whereas before, the selected app didn't update to show that it was active--it kept the inactive state for its window. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that this might have something to do with the windowserver process, so it might make sense for the next person who stumbles on this thread to start by deleting any preferences files that begin with com.apple.windowserver. Just a hunch, but it's worth starting there before you do a complete flush of all your preferences.
Thanks again for the help--hopefully this workaround will be persistent. Fingers crossed!

  • How do you send an email to group address with Maverick OSX?

Installed Maverick 10.9.2 and have problem sending emails to Group address's. I can add each reciepent one ata time but can not get the one click Group address to load like I could with OSX 10.7. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks for replying. I did a poor job of explaining my problem. With OSX 10.7, Sending mail from my Mac Pro I was able to add multiple groups to the send line. Using OSX 10.9 I can only add one group, it does not allow multiple's.
I tried the CC  line as well as BCC  to no avail.
As far as one click, I prefix all groups names with a key double character to keep them together. Now I can type that key characters on the Send To line and bring up the list of groups to select from ( my one click reference).. I use a double ZZ. After selecting the first group, keying ZZ quickly allows subsequent groups etc. to include in the same email. It worked with 10.7, not in 10.9?
Rather time consuming, having to send each group the same email one at a time.
    Again appreciate your reply.

  • Has Yosemite corrected Mavericks' Mail/Contacts problem with Groups?

After I switched from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I found that I could no longer list a Contact Group name in the To block of an email without all of the addresses in the group showing, despite having Mail Preferences set so that all of the addresses wouldn't show. The work-around for this problem is having to put Contact Group names in the Blind Copy section of an email. Does anyone know if Yosemite has corrected this problem?
    Thanks,
    Bob W.

Thanks Barney. I assumed that Yosemite hadn't corrected the problem.
However, I'm not sure where you got the information that the "BCC" section on Mail email forms was designed to be used for "Group" addresses from Mac's Address Book (now Contacts).  The "BCC" section of the email form was designed to be used by email composers who wanted copies of their emails to go to addresses that they wanted to keep hidden from those whose addresses appeared in the "To" section of the email.
The "Group" address feature in Contacts were created to allow email senders the option to send emails to large numbers of addressees that had something in common (such as a group of relatives of the sender, or in my case, members of a club), so that you didn't have to type in large numbers of addresses in the "To" window every time you wanted to send to such a group. At the same time, it kept the addresses hidden from all of those who received the email as well as from spammers.
Mac also gives (or did give) you the option to have the addresses in the Group in the "To" window to show or not to show. Go to "Preferences-Composing" section in Mail and you'll see that under the "Addressing" heading, you're given the option "When sending to a group, show all member addresses."  Since that option is normally unchecked, the default is to not have the addresses show. Unless you opt to allow the addresses to show, only the name that you've given the Group shows in the "To" window of the email.
If the Group addresses in Contacts were designed to be placed in the "BCC" section of an email, there would be no purpose in having that Preference option available in Mail Preferences.  The problem with having to use the "BCC" section of the email for Group addresses is that many email server companies assume that high numbers of addresses showing in the "BCC" section of an email is an indicator that the email is coming from a spammer, so the use of "BCC" for large numbers of email addresses can cause problems. The use of "Group" address names in the "To" window avoids those problems.

  • Mail and Address Book Issues in 10.4.5

    Hello:
I recently updated to 10.4.5 and have some issues with mail and address book.
    1. MAIL: All the mail on my machine has been "reformatted" for lack of a better term. Each line in a paragraph is about 1.5" above the next. This is the same for all messages. This just appeared after I updated to 10.4.5. Suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what was the solution?
    2. ADDRESS BOOK: All of my addresses just have the name. Apparently, everything else has disappeared (Phone, e-mail, notes, etc.) Ex: John Smith... That is all I have for all 346 records. Naturally, I have the data backed up on .mac, but before I re-sync (assuming that works) I want to resolve the issue to prevent it from happening again. I have tried renaming files in the user>library>application support>address book from AddressBook.data.previous to just AddressBook.data to no avail. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
