Mavericks mail will not setup

This is on my familiy's 2013 family iMac. It is running Mavericks. There are five users on the machine, but the one impacted is my daughters.
There is a separate issue where a Pages document created on my daughter's iPad mini will not open with the iMac's Pages app. When this happens, the only way I have ever been able to fix it is to logout of iCloud, lougout of her account on the Mac, and then log back in to iCloud. This used to happen a lot. However, this is the first time in a while, but now her account is in a strange state.
I've logged back into her iCloud account, and everything setup properly except Mail. Mail is checked in the iCloud preferences, but the following is what I observe.
1. When I launch Mail, it prompts me to setup an account. When I enter the account information, Mail does come up, but nothing is there. Mail->Preferences is grayed out, and the application will not Quit with Cmd-Q. If have to force it to quit. After forcing Mail to quit, it will ask me to add the account again if I bring it up.
2. System Preferences -> iCloud will not allow me to uncheck Mail. It complains that I need to go to Mail and disable the account there. Unfortunately, number 1 prevents that.
3. System Preferences -> iCloud will not allow me to sign out of iCloud. It complains that Mail prevents it.
4. System Preferences -> Internet Accounts will not allow me to remove the iCloud account. Mail prevents it again.
This iCloud account works perfectly on her iPad, but now it is toast on the iMac.
Note, please don't respond with lmgtfy. I've been searching for hours, and lots of people seem to be having similar issues to this. However, none of the fixes (where there were any) worked. I've also tried all my usual tricks of removing com.apple.mail, mail data, iCloud folders, etc. Nothing is making her email happy.
I'm guessing this is a keychain issue, but I can't seem to find the right incantation to solve it.
Help!

I had the same issue...I called apple support and they gave me the following instructions. Seems to be working perfectly fine.
- Go to Apple Mail
- Hit on Preferences, go to Accounts and hit the "+" button
- Select "Add other mail account", and hit continue
- Enter your Full Name, email address, and password (DO NOT HIT CREATE)
- Push down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT"
- It will route you to the Incoming Mail Server Info window, here you will type in the Mail Server as: imap.gmail.com. Again type in your user name (complete email) and password. And again, hold down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT".
- Then it wil route you to the Outgoing Mail Server. Type in the Outgoing Mail Server as: smtp.gmail.com, and again your email and password.
-Hit Create
Once you see the email account on your Apple Mail sidebar, go to compose a new message and send yourself an email to the new email account from your new email account
This worked for me and synced all my folders. Hope it works for you as well.

  • Mavericks mail will not allow me to add a gmail account

    Help!
I am using running OSX Mavericks, including the new version of Mail 7.0 (1822). I cannot add a GMail account. Going through Mail: Preferences: Accounts, I give the information, but then get told:
There was a problem setting up the account.
Unable to verify account name or password.
If I click ok (the only option), Mail quits, so I cannot use the Connection Doctor to see what else is happening.
All my other programs that access the internet work, and I can access google calendar, for example, via BusyCal.
There must be something simple happening.... By the way, Mavericks Mail works perfectly on my machine at work!
    Suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Roger

Hi, I have recently updated my OS X to Maverick. when I did, my mail programme (Mail) will not open - for me only. There are 4 other users of the iMac, and they don't appear to have any problems.

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Open the system menu via Alt+Space or click the Firefox icon on the title bar and see if you can resize that window.
If that works then close Firefox to save that setting.

  • Why mail will not quit?

Mail will not quit, and prevents macbook pro from shutting down/restarting.
It will not quit, and does not give the option to force quit.

Looks like the Mavericks upgrade has messed with a lot of people's installations, and some Apple applications (like Mail, or Safari) seem more highly impacted than third-parties'.
In your case, Mail appears to be gobbling up CPU cycles and RAM. You could install this little gem called atMonitor, highlight the Mail line in the main windows, then click on the "renice" button in the top right. You can then give it a "20" value (the lowest possible CPU grade for an application or service in OS X), then click on "Set and remember".
Mail should behave from then on, and close down gracefully when you ask it too, because you put a cap to its CPU usage.
One caveat: atMonitor must be running for the settings to take effect upon reboot. You can add it to your startup items.
There's another app called Dock Dodger that will prevent the atMonitor from showing in your Dock all the time.

  • Apple mail will not open any windows for me.

I have a mid 2009 mac book pro. I upgraded to Mavericks and now my apple mail will not display any screens (windows). When I open it, it will bounce once in the dock then show the nav bar at the top, however most everything like send new mail is grey. I have tried loading upgrades but they won't load to my HD for some reason or another and am at a loss.

Try holding down the shift key when opening Mail.

You can try to Force Quit the Mail application by using the keys OPTION COMMAND ESC, from the window that pops up select Mail and clcik force quit.
Have you tried launching Mail from your Applications folder? It launches properly, drag the icon off the dock, it should vanish in a puff of smoke, you can then go to the Applcations folder and drag the Mail icon back to the dock to create a new shortcut.

You need to contact "epost."  The issue is not an Apple issue....the epost software needs, I assume, to be updated.
