Mavericks Mail won't auto check

I have Mail preferences set to check Mail every five minutes which it has done correctly forever. Just yesterday, I noticed it is no longer checking mail automatically. I have to check manually in order to retrieve new emails. (I have set and reset the mail-check preference choice to no avail.)
I assume maybe a preferences file has gotten corrupted (?). Is there a pref file I can delete that might allow me to restor auto-check in Mail without it deleting all my other Mail settings?
Thanks for any help,
WK

Hi William,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you are encountering this symptom:
For some email providers, new email messages in Mail may only appear to arrive when Mail is first opened. No new email arrives until Mail is quit and reopened.
You may want to verify this by testing the workaround in this article:
OS X: New email messages not received until Mail is quit and reopened

  • Mail won't stop checking some accounts

Anyone have this happen before? Mail won't stop checking a couple accounts I have. They are accounts we use every single day, run off our own server. They will check fine on other macs, but not this iMac starting a few hours ago. I have rebuilt the boxes, deleted all mail from the servers and updated to 10.5.4 just in case. Still the same thing.
I have to force quit, then once restarted it will grab new e-mails before it craps out and just sits there spinning on accounts again.
    Ideas? Thx.

I'm experiencing the same issue with one of my POP accounts as well.
I've tried the "Rebuild" command in the Mailbox menu as well as rebuilding the Apple Mail Envelope Index, but it's still attempting to sync.
Has anyone found a resolution to this issue?

  • With maverick Mail won't let me search at all. Anyone able to help?

With my new powerbook came Maverick. Now mail won't let me search at all. Can anyone help me solve this please?

I have exactly the same problem. I received an important mail just two days ago and search doesn't even find it. Flagged mail no longer works either, so it's nigh on impossible for me to find my mails to respond to later. It's accurate to say that to me, in general Mavericks Mail.app is no longer a useful mail tool since it utterly breaks my mark-for-later-response workflow.
What's worse is that this is a massive regression. This all used to work fine. It's somewhat upsetting that I can use my four-year-old Apple laptop to effectively use email and yet my brand new one is useless. With "progress" like this, how can Apple expect brand loyalty?
EDIT: In case any Apple people read this, I am using a Google Apps mail account.

  • Mavericks Mail won't send login information to IMAP server

I am having a problem with Mavericks Mail not connecting to the Dovecot IMAP server.  There appears to be many posts about similar problems, but none have the exact symptom I’m seeing.
Mail appears to not provide login information to any of my IMAP accounts.  The iPad, iPhone, and Thunderbird on the same Mac all work with the same credentials.  Just Apple Mail on the Mac fails.  It fails for all user accounts on the same Mac.  This has been a problem for a long time.
Connection doctor seems to indicate Mail is not sending login information.  In fact, connection doctor shows the only thing working is the smtp server that doesn’t require a login.  Everything else fails.
I’ve rebooted the Mac and the mail server.
    I’ve repaired disk permissions.
    I’ve recreated the account.
I’ve create a brand new account.
    I’ve removed cache files.
    I’ve re-indexed mail files.
    Nothing works.
Here is the relevant connection doctor log:

    dovecot: Jul 24 19:59:13 Info: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): method=PLAIN, rip=***.***.***.***, lip=***.***.***.***, TLS
I believe the “WROTE” log line in Mail cooresponds to the “client in” line in Dovecot.  The next line is a continuation going back to Mail.  But, Mail never seems to read or process it.  When Dovecot gets a successful login from Thunderbird, the login credentials were displayed in the log with another “client in” line.
Here is what I am using:
    OS X 10.9.4
    Mail version Version 7.3 (1878.6)
    Dovecot version 1.1.7
Where do I go from here?  Has anyone seen this symptom before?  How do I get Mail to send credentials to an IMAP server?
Thanks from a first time poster !

Try MD5 as the authentication method.

  • Mavericks Mail won't update Exchange 2013 email

I see people have written about this already but there doesn't seem to be a solution posted in these forums and it seems like a major bug.
I use Apple Mail to connect to my work Exchange email. We use Server 2013.
Mail worked perfectly under Mountain Lion.
I updated my office iMac as well as my home iMac and MacBook Pro Retina Display to Mavericks on Tuesday and after doing that my Exchange email on all three devices would update with new mail very slowly -- maybe every half hour or when I started and re-started Mail. Mail updated on my iPhone and iPad instantly as well as through my office's WebMail portal. That is, this isn't a server-based issue.
Also, I have a Gmail account that updates normally.
Searching for answers online, there was a suggestion to change "check new mail" in preferences from "Automatically" to "Every 1 minute." That didn't work, even after I restarted Mail.
I tried reseting Mail on my office iMac by following instructions I found online. It involved going into the Library folder and deleting four or five Mail-related subfolders. After that, it was as though I was using Mail for the first time.
    That didn't work either.
The only other thing I can think of is a clean install of Mavericks but that seems extreme.
Does anyone have an answer to this?
The same problem on three devices makes it seem like this is more of a serious OS bug than a client-side issue.

Donna did anyone ever help you get this fixed? I am having the same problem!!

  • Mail won't auto complete address completely

Hello.  This may be hard to explain properly but here goes!  In Mac Mail, when I type an address in the TO line, it auto completes the address and it is highlighted in blue, but I have to click in the text portion of the message in order for it to become one address in the TO line.  I'm quite sure in Mavericks, that once I had begun to type the address, it would auto complete completely and I could go on to the Subject line.  Hope someone can assist in this. Thanks.

Thanks Eric, that is a solution of sorts but I would find it better if it would be done without having to click in the subject area or
hitting return as you suggest.  Thanks for your input.

  • Maverick Mail won't run

I am running Maverick OS10.9.1 on a new MacBook Pro. The Mail App just does not work. When I open Mail it immediately brings up a dialogue screen to add accounts. The accounts are already setup and show up in the Internet Account list in System Preferences.
I have repeatedly entered the account info requested in the Mail Account screen but the mail does not download. In addition the majority of the mail app pull down selections are greyed and not available.
I have attempted some of the fixes I have found onlne but am thwarted by the pull downs selections not being available. Mail app works fine on my ipad and iphone and my older Mac Air which is also running 10.9.1

    One solution.

  • Mail won't auto complete Exchange email addresses after Lion

Hi there. I tried to lookup a solution for this problem on the support communities but wasn't able to. Since upgrading to Lion, the auto complete feature for email addresses in my University Exchange server won't work. Mail only completes addressees contained locally in my Mac. The feature worked fine with Snow Leopard and continues to work on both my iPhone and iPad. It's worth noting that setting up the exchange server itself wasn't a straight forward task either as the auto setup didn't work and I had to enter the exchange server address manually in Mail. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

The screenshot below is from SL, not Lion, but see if you can find something similar to this.
In Mail prefs, click on 'Composing', and look for the 'Configure LDAP' button. Click on that and add your server with the little '+' button.

  • Yahoo mail pushing with auto check set to manual!?!?!?

Ok this is a weird one. On my iPhone with autocheck mail set to manual, it doesn't check for new mail unless I hit the email button and check the account. On my partners iPhone, the settings are exactly the same (autocheck set to manual), but he gets email alerts whenever he gets a new yahoo message. Anyone else having this problem?

The autocheck option doesn't seem to impact Yahoo email accounts... because they're meant to have Push email notification. What you're experiencing is the issue many of us have with Yahoo Push email... it doesn't consistently/reliably push email for some folks. Your partner appears to be one of the lucky ones... for some reason theirs is working and yours doesn't. There's been some discussion here about ways to "clear" the problem... logging into the Yahoo account with a browser and clearing out your inbox to trigger push again, etc.)... but if that works for you it's likely to be a temporary fix.
I've tried all sorts of things, even creating a new yahoo "free" email account, which at one time was rumored to consistently work for people. Not so... I find that Push no longer works reliably for either my Yahoo! Plus account, or my new/free Yahoo account.
    A fix is loooong overdue.

  • Mac Maverick mail won't quit

I up grade my Imac to OS 10.9, every since frequently get notification about e-mail, no e-mail in inbox?? Then tryed to upgrade to OS 10.9.1 to fix some of these bugs and go figure cannot quit mail so cannot install upgrade??? How do I get out of mail. It does not even give me the option. Frustrated!!!

Go to  > Force Quit or press Alt, Command and Esc keys, select Mail in the list and force quit it

  • Where is the auto check for Mail?

Before the 2.0 update, I could set the Mail app for auto check every 30 minutes or so, not in 2.0, I cannot find this option any more. Can I still make this setting somewhere?
    André

The setting is in Settings > Fetch New Data. Set Fetch to 30 min (other options are 15 min and hourly).
You'll want Push set to OFF, unless you have a need for it and your email account supports it (MobileMe, Yahoo, or an MS Exchange server do); push uses a lot of battery power, so if you don't have a need for it, leave it off.
    Hope this helps...

  • Mail won't autofill when sending to Company!

I have discovered a weird problem, auto fill is working fine on all my contacts, but when I start typing a Company Name mail won't auto fill it from the Address Book.
    Any Ideas!

Yes Matt, you are correct. It will change the way it's displayed in the list.
Actually, it should work either way if filled in with a company name also. Seems though that something in the way the contact fields are entered would be the problem.
After checking mine and changing an address with a company involved every way I could think of, mine will autofill by person name or company name no matter how I arrange it.
And, it does autofill with only a company name in that field without a first and last name. With only a company name, the company name field automatically defaults to being checked when saved. And, it does autofill. At least it does for me.

  • Mavericks Mail update (build 1822): constant folder syncing with Gmail IMAP

The Mail update to build 1822 seems to fix previous major problems for Gmail IMAP.  I've changed my Gmail settings (on the Gmail side) back to my original setup: "All Mail" now is turned off for display in the Mail client. That allows me to search messages and see search results in Mail that show the folder in which search result messages reside...instead of "All Mail" for every message matching the search criteria, as it showed when "All Mail" was turned on.
    Two remaining problems for me.
1 -- Regularly and frequently, Mail goes out to the Gmail IMAP server and checks every single mail folder and syncs with them. It doesn't matter that the folders haven't been changed or that I haven't sent, received, or viewed any mail...if Mail is open, it checks and syncs frequently.  Now, very few folders have new filed messages, so bandwidth use of this behavior presumable is low...but it sure is annoying. You can see it happening by choosing "Activity" under the Window menu, and watching for a while.
2 -- I can't change the display order of Gmail folders in the left-hand column of the Mail app display.  The order is fixed and it doesn't seem to follow any rule I can detect.  The folder display certainly isn't alphabetical or by date.
Suggestions or insight about these two challenges are welcome.
    Thanks!

I've got no solution on problem one (sorry for both of us), but might for problem two.
I have four IMAP accounts in mail: 2 gmail, one google hosted app, and one Corporate.  Mavericks mail (with update) constantly checks all IMAP accounts, whether gmail or not.
This contant IMAP freak out may be related to the solution I have for you on Gmail folder sorting. I've tried diabling the account  (in preferences), quitting mail, then restarting mail, and then re-enabling the account. Let mail finish its IMAP freak out, then drag the folders where you want them.  They may or may not appear to change succesfuly.  Wait a while (so Mail does the IMAP dance again), quit Mail, restart Mail. If it looks good great, if not, do the whole disable / re-enable account thing.  Sounds mental, and pretty much is, but it worked for me. I cobbled this together from hints on previous Mail version / IMAP problems.
My pet theory--which is entirely unsubstantied by any evidence whatsoever--is that Mail's local cache is not being updated properly while in use, and the flood of IMAP traffic is leaving the folder structure changes in limbo until you force changes with the quit / preference change. Whatever the cause, it seems to affect non Gmail as well (for at least me).

  • Since updating to Mavericks, Mail doesn't work properly.  It just stops working (no error messages--it just won't check for new mail) and I must shut it down and reopen it to get it working again.  Any suggestions?

Try to force quit the mail app
Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.
Failing that, go into the settings, mail, contacts and calendars and remove your account info then put it back in and see if that works
