Mavericks RAID 1 unreliable?

Short version: RAID 1 array rebuild is failing with one drive working in the set, but failing after an hour or two (variable) attempting to rebuild to another drive. I've changed drive and drive bay and the rebuild still fails. The apparently working remaining source drive from the failed mirror seems to be OK as Time Machine completed a full backup of its contents without issue. Nothing is logged in Console. Debug suggestions welcomed.
Long version: I've been overseas for a while with my Mac laptop, while my Mac Pro sat back home gathering dust for a few months, running a fairly early 10.8 version. When I got back, I upgraded it to 10.8.5, then retail Mavericks via the App Store.
The machine is a 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 with all four internal drive bays populated. The four drives are configured as two volumes, both RAID 1 (mirrored) for fault tolerance. Time Machine runs over both drives to an external enclosure. The external enclosure itself was reporting failures on one drive in the Time Machine striped array. Being quite old, I replaced all drives in the striped array and ran a complete backup of the RAID 1 volumes in the Mac Pro. This completed successfully, so all files on both volumes are clearly readable without error. Normal incremental backups since then have proceeded without issue.
It was setting up the replacement Time Machine drives in Disk Utility under Mavericks where I first saw that one of the two internal hard drive RAID 1 volumes, the boot volume, was marked as "degraded". The drive in Bay 3 was marked as "Failed". I tried a rebuild, and it seemed OK for a while, but then dropped back to "Failed". Another rebuild attempt failed part way through.
So, assuming another hard drive fault, I bought another two drives to replace the two internal discs making up the boot volume RAID 1 array. Replacing the drive in Bay 3, I tried to rebuild - but - same problem. It failed after about an hour or two of rebuild. Nothing at all is logged in Console at the point of failure - plenty of messages when the array is being set up and rebuild starts, but oddly, no messages at all when it fails. Disk Utility just says "Failed" and the rebuild halts.
I've now swapped the drives in the two bays, to see if the actual drive bay 3 in the Mac Pro was faulty. The machine was now booting from the only working original drive in the set, from Bay 3. It's working fine from there as I type. However, a rebuild to the new drive, now in Bay 4, failed in the same way as usual. Faulty new drive perhaps? So now I swapped the one new drive for the other one I'd bought at the same time. Rebuild - same result. Failed.
Even if I swap drive bays and with three different hard discs, I cannot rebuild the RAID 1 array for the boot volume. The other RAID 1 volume in the machine seems to be fine, though the machine doesn't boot from it and its overall data traffic levels are lower. But since Time Machine can read all files on both volumes apparently with no trouble, it would seem that the one working drive in the RAID 1 boot volume isn't to blame for the rebuild failures (but I might be wrong as the I/O patterns are of course quite different).
I've now no idea how to proceed. Both bay 3 and bay 4 seem to work equally well with the one remaining working boot drive present; meanwhile, neither bay works when attemping to rebuild to either a new or an old hard drive. This looks more and more like a (severe!) Mavericks bug, except the other RAID 1 volume is just fine so far and Google doesn't show any particular complaints about Mavericks and RAID 1 arrangements.
Given the lack of Console information, anyone have any suggestions about how I can find out what the cause of the failure is?

There were no responses, but for the sake of archives and searches: I did not resolve the RAID rebuild issue so took a different approach.
I put the two new drives into bays 1 and 2, booting off the one working boot drive from the original RAID mirrored pair that I'd put in bay 4. I used Disk Utility to configure the new drives as a new RAID mirrored pair with the same volume name as the boot volume, then did a file-level copy of the contents using Carbon Copy Cloner. I then swapped out the old boot drive, put back in my other mirrored pair of general data disks so all four bays were once again populated and started up. So far, the machine has been running fine with no RAID failures noted on the boot or data volumes.
Since the only thing that made a difference to the ability to copy the failing volume's data was the method through which the files were copied, it's hard to escape the conclusion that Mavericks' RAID 1 rebuild code is broken and anyone using software RAID under OS X 10.9 should proceed with extreme caution - and up to date backups!
(So for me the upgrade cost of Mavericks has been the unnecessary purchase of two 2TB hard drives, since it looks like a software fault in the array rebuild, not any kind of disk error in the original drives - but who knows - nothing's logged to console - what a mess).

  • AddressBook corrupt and Internet Passwords wiped

    Hello--
SOHO network running from ML 10.8.5/Server 2.2.2.  My primary workstation upgraded to Mavericks.  After spending most of last week rebuilding the server and getting other things fixed, I had hoped to be doing work this week.  Unfortunately, the system, in particular my account on Mavericks, remains unreliable (I never thought I'd say this but good thing I had Windows running in a VM so I got some work done!).
The particular problem seems to include at least three issues, which may in part be related.
    1) Corruption/zero out of local copy of addressbook (AddressBook-v22.abcddb).  My addressbook is served from the ML server which, thus far, has remained intact.  However, I find the locally synced copy on Mavericks gets corrupted and then wiped.  Here are part of the log entries when this seemed to occur last:
    12/9/13 10:44:25.934 AM CalendarAgent[201]: Database file is empty: /Network/Servers/<path_to_user_home>/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/<a long uid>/AddressBook-v22.abcddb

        reason = "Failed to replace destination database";
And another entry indicates the Addressbook-v22.abcddb file is corrupted.
I also can note that I had a profile set up through Profile Manager that aimed to log users off after 30 minutes of activity.  The profile has not executed successfully yet on either Lion or Mavericks clients.  Because it wasn't work, I removed it today.
My first console entry this morning when I tried to use the computer which was hung on Reminders trying to logout:
    12/9/13 5:50:23.147 AM AddressBookSourceSync[4917]: 0x7faa506328a0: ManagedObjectContext (ABAddressBook) could not create the store at path: </Network/Servers/<path_to_user>/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/<a long uid>/AddressBook-v22.abcddb> - creation error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134090 "A timeout error occurred while connecting to the persistent store." UserInfo=0x7faa5062eac0 {NSSQLiteErrorDomain=5, NSUnderlyingException=error during SQL execution : The database operation timed out after 44321.40 seconds.} {
        NSSQLiteErrorDomain = 5;
        NSUnderlyingException = "error during SQL execution : The database operation timed out after 44321.40 seconds.";
While the computer is in the condition I've described, I cannot start apps for most of the collaborative services (Mail, Reminders, Calendars, Addressbook, Messages).  I assume this is because they all rely upon a healthy AddressBook-v22.abcddb file.
    2) All passwords in Internet Accounts (poorly named IMO) and Safari get wiped.  So far I haven't found any log entries useful to this.
    3) Notes associated with my server-provided email account do not behave properly.  Again, this appears to be a local syncing issue as the Notes on the server remain and are available via my iPad.  However, on Mavericks when I start Notes it bounces and bounces and then will finally start with zero notes.  If I close it, and go into Internet Accounts, I have  to (re)check the box next to Notes, and then restart.  At that point, the app pulls down the current notes from the server.  With this third issue, it has been occuring ever since I upgraded to Mavericks and is a condition that exists even when the AddressBook database problem described above is not in place.
My first question then is, what might be causing these addressbook, password and Notes problems, and how do I fix the issue?
I've found if I delete the AddressBook folder from Application Support, I can set up a new Contacts account profile and get the contacts from the server.  Everything runs okay for a little bit, but then the problem starts up again.
My second question is whether or not the profile I had been pushing to log off users after 30 mins of inactivity could be a cause of the other issues?  Since I removed the package, I'll partially be able to test that myself.  The profile was only in place for a few days so the issues with the Notes pre-dates that.  Curious if others have thoughts about this.
    Thank you.
    Tim

Indications seem to continue to point towards file permission issues but not sure where they are being generated.  All the files and directories in ~/Library/Application Support/Addressbook have a min of RW for the user.  I guess I will create a brand new test user on the server and set up dummy addressbook to check other file permissions.
Still welcome other thoughts/suggestions from folks.

p.s., I thought Apple moved away from SQLite?
p.p.s. In my Addressbook folder, under sources, I seem to have three generated directories, each with different unique names.  Is this normal?

  • RAID Utility software not available in OS X Mavericks?

Up till yesterday I have been using a RAID card in my Mac Pro (Mid 2010, 4 x 1 TB SATA, initially as RAID-5, now in a RAID-10 setup) under OS X 10.8.5 without any issues, and the RAID utility allowed me to check the status od me disks, event log, and the battery status / refresh cycles for the RAID card. Last night now I upgraded to OS X Mavericks. The upgrade went well, things appear to work OK, obviously at least half of my RAID-10 array is in use — however, I can't find the RAID utility, check the status of the RAID-10 system and the battery status of the RAID card. The disk utility shows the RAID set - but none of the underlying features (individual disks and their status, logs, battery) — am I thrown back to a soft RAID, and my investment into a RAID card has evaporated?

Thanks a lot, Seliqui! the reason why I did not find it is that a) after the upgrade to Mavericks, the icon that I previously had parked in the dock no longer worked, and b) the new location for the utility can't be found anywhere on the Launchpad. I suspect both effects are an indication that they missed to add the new directory to the command path. I can hardly imagine that this was deliberate because if you have a RAID card you definitely want to have access to that utility — not just in case of a disk failure (I have had a couple of these!), but also in order to stop the user from doing things one is not supposed to do while the battery is reconditioning.

Help!! After Mavericks update: total loss of my 5TB  of Data on my Onnto-Data-Tale- Raid.

You have the choice of waiting till the servers aren't as loaded or till they come up with a solution to fix the errors going on. As of now its difficult to determine whether the overloaded servers are the blame or whether the update is faulty and how much of your personal data you will lose. I only lost my apps which were all on my itunes so it wasn't much of a big deal.. You can always back up your data and then proceed to update if you feel thats a safer route but I read that some people had issues backing up their data before the upgrade as well.

  • Installing Maverick on a MacPro with OS 10.7.5 and using RAID 1 with 2 * 1TB disks. 50% used.

I have a MacPro with 2* 1TB disks running Mac OS 10.7.5 using a RAID card running RAID 1. 50% space used.
How can I install Maverick safely (i have a Time Machine Backup). The install will not use the RAID set as a boot volume.
Reading the RAID manual there is discribed a way to create a bootabkle partition and RAID 5. But it starts out as a newly purchased configuration.
I have a used configuration. I would like to reuse the data.
Is there an installation section for my type of configuration?
    THKS for all help.
    Regards

I have found the answer myself already.
    1.     Take a full backup on a medium which also will restore.
    2.     Start your system with original start-up DVD.
    3.     Start RAID pgm. Dissolve your current RAID set.
    4.     Create a new RAID set with a logical volume on it.
    5.     Restore from your backup your current system.
    6.     Install Maverick on this system.

  • I can't see my Raid (Drobo) on my desktop with OSX Mavericks

    Hello,
I just updated to OSX Mavericks. I now have a problem with my RAID array. It doesn't mount on the desktop. I tried updating software, contacting Drobo(out of warranty) verifying  and repairing the disk, physically "mounting the disk" in Disk First Aid. I get nothing. In Drobo's program, the disk is functional and healthy. It just won't mount. I didn't have this problem before I installed Mavericks. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Al Harding

    found this
With the help of Drobo's technical support who pointed me to this MacRumors thread, I've resolved the issue. It turned out that somehow my drive got set to "invisible", which is a filesystem attribute. I don't think this setting is settable via the Finder, so I'm not sure how it got set like that.
To confirm the issue, I had to install Xcode and then install the command line tools, then run this Terminal command:
    GetFileInfo /Volumes/Drobo/
where /Volumes/Drobo/ is the path to the volume in question. This command returns all the attributes set for that volume. If the list of attributes includes a V (capital V), it means that the volume is invisible.
    To fix it:
    SetFile -a v /Volumes/Drobo/
with a lowercase v, to remove the invisible attribute.
After a reboot, everything was back to normal.
Note: depending on the drive and your permissions, it's possible you will need to run these commands with sudo, although I didn't.

  • Mybook studio raid 0, empty after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my WD My Book Studio II connected by firewire, does not contain any files. It is a raid 0, after using the operating system while I wonder if I could use time machine to which I said no.
In this hard drive I keep my most precious files.
Forgive the level of English, I'm Spanish and I write through a translator.
    A greeting and thanks.

I don't claim to be any expert but my guess is that Apple's (software?) RAID took over and reconfigured the RAID. WD Drive Manager is obviously imcompatible with Mavericks as it appears multiple times in the menu bar everytime the drive is mounted and does not go away without a restart. The Empty/"MyBook" state of the drive is stuck no matter where I tried it (OS 10.8 and 10.6 with and without WD software).
I chatted with a higher level Apple tech support and sent him links to this and another thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=30&tstart=0). The end result at the moment was a low level data recovery recommendation which I will try to avoid as long as I can.
I'm holding my breath waiting for a solution from Apple and/or WD where my old volume and data will magically reappear.

  • What is the best e-Sata PCI RAID card for Mavericks.

What is the best e-Sata PCI RAID card for Mavericks.  Bought a new MAC PRO with Mavericks and the older PCI 1095,3124 that I used on older MAC Pro does not work.  The MAC sees it, but the drivers never show up as being installed.  If I could find drivers that work or a recommended PCI card it would be appreciated.

PM made sense - 6 yrs ago when disk drives were much slower. Today it is a bottleneck.
SAS makes more sense. Outside of SSD, no disk drive maxes out by itself one PM interface (an SSD will) but it also means just two drives are enough to do so. So check out why to avoid PM:

  • What happened to Raid utility in mavericks?

I have an early 2008 mac pro with apple's hardware raid card.   After doing Apples "free" upgrade, I no longer have raidutility under utilties...    What happened?
I'm also stuck in and endless loop of appstore trying to update itunes and hp printer driver...
    Sigh.
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
I would claim that the RAID Utility is really a System Administrator app, and not a user app.  And with the end of the silver Mac Pro models and Xserve already out of production, the Apple Raid cards appear to be a thing of the past.
As I manage 14 Mac Pros, from Early 2008 through Mid 2012 models, I'll have to figure out other ways to perform the mirrored disk function.  I think it will be some kind of cron job that runs rsync to keep pairs of disks synced...
I've just installed Mavericks on a test Early 2008 Mac Pro, with RAID card, upgrading from OS X 10.6.8.  So far, everything seems to be going pretty well.  Next week's project is to compile Macports, and install our standard set of Unix utilities.  This will likely be a challenge, for such a new OS.
    anyway, glad to help,
    Roy

  • Will mavericks boot from a raid array?

Will OS X Mavericks boot from a raid array?  I know Lion didn't support booting from a RAID.

Well, since no one seems to want to answer this question I've done a little research and answered it myself.  Yes, you can boot from a RAID while running OS X Mavericks.  The only setback is that you can't create a recovery partition.
While installing Mavericks on a RAID it will prompt you to OK installing without a recovery partition.  In laymen's terms it means you have to keep your own backup.  If your RAID fails you will lose the data or whatever is stored on it.  Simply keep your own backup and you'll be fine.  This is the way most people do it anyway.  Yes, it may be considered old wave but it's still the best option.  It's an absolute.  If you have a backup, you never to have cross your fingers, pray and hope the recovery process actually works!
That being said, you can create some really souped up Macs.  I actually installed two 480GB SSDs into a 2.8GHz Macbook Pro and the response is phenominal !!!  From power on button to sign in screen is less than 10 seconds on a 5 year old Macbook Pro !!!  If you hate seeing the little spinning wheel while shutting down this will cure your distress.  Shutting down is instantaneous.  I love it !!!  RAID and SSDs are the best !!!  A newer Quad-Core machine has to be even faster which is hard to imagine.
    That's my 2 cents ...

  • Potential fix for slow/unreliable network on Macbook Air running Mavericks

    Hi all,
I work in IT support at University of Manchester, UK and have found a fix for for network issues we were experiencing with Macbook Air laptops running Mavericks. These Airs were having issues connecting to our WiFi and experiencing slow downloads, even when switched over to UBS LAN adaptors.
Anyhow, after trawling these forums without success I stumbled upon this solution myself so thought I'd share:
Basically, if you are experiencing speed/connection issues go into the 'Advanced' network settings and change the IPv6 setting from 'Automatic' to 'Link Local' and then reboot. Hopefully, after doing this you should find your speed levels return to expected levels!
    Hope it works for you.
    Cheers.

  • Still getting Kernel Panics after fresh installation of Mavericks. Why?

    Hello,
My Macbook Pro (mid 2011 I believe) has been having random Kernel Panics for a long time. Today I finally got around to doing a fresh install/upgrade to Mavericks from Mountain Lion. Since then I've already had 2 Kernel Panics. My computer isn't necessarily doing anything taxing, the last 2 KP's happened while my computer was dowloading a game, and I was not using it for anything else. Sometimes I can use the computer for hours, sometimes it crashes every half hour.
The computer has been to the Apple store where they said they have not been able to reproduce the problem. This is very confusing to me, after taking the computer home I had a crash in 10 minutes. I'm running out of ideas. It seems to me that this is a hardware failure (even though diagnostics never showed anything, but I know these aren't guarantees). Are there any steps I can take before I start replacing my hard disk/RAM?
I've included the last 2 panic reports below.

That panic was not caused by third-party software, and the "etrecheck" output is irrelevant. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

  • Osx mavericks shutdowns by itself

Running latest OSX Mavericks 10.9.1 on MBP Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013.
Few days ago computer started to complete shutdown itself when I close lid for few hours. When I close it for some minutes, it works just fine (like it was before). When I keep it closed overnight or for 5+ hours, computer shutdowns. I see blank login and all programs are closed. And windows of opened programs are not opened (as when I press Reboot), only Finder.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
