Mavericks + Reboot/kernal panics when Mini DVI to DVI adapter plugged in to 2008 iMac

Hi, i'm encountering a problem with my brothers iMac from 2008. We are attempting to add a 2560x1440p external monitor. When I first plugged in the cable, along with the Mini DVI/DVI adapter, the computer reboot, went to the grey screen, and then said "Your computer restarted because of an error, press any key to reboot" type message, then does it again. I tried plugging in just the adapter, and got no kernal panic, so it's only when info/power is transmitted through the cable.
I googled it extensively but couldn't find any solution nor even a hint of a solutiion. I suspect it might be the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2400), but I don't know. A few years ago we connected a 720p TV using a MiniDVi/HDMI adapter, and it worked, but the resolution sucked and it was more of an experiment.
I should add we installed Mavericks yesterday if it makes any difference. I also asked the seller and and he confirmed the adapter was a DVI-D, which is what the external monitor requires. Here is the Problem Report given after removal of adapter and reboot. Thanks for any help.

I just plugged in the MiniDVI/HDMI adapter cable and I got a really flickery TV, does this suggest graphics card issues? If so how to I run a diagnostics test on Mavericks if I don't have the boot DVD? Thanks!

  • Airpot not connecting when mini dvi adapter is pluged in.

Airport will not work when I hook up a display through the apple mini dvi adapter. When the adapter is unpluged I can connect to the internet. Does anyone know how to fix the problem. Thanks.

Typically that is an indication the wireless connection is on the edge of reception and the added EMI from the display throws the connection off. What you want to experiment with is placement and proximity of devices. Move the wireless access point closer if possible. Move the display further away from the Mac if possible. Think about line of sight between the wireless access point and the Mac. Is the monitor sitting right in the middle between the two?
You can also try changing channels that the wireless is working on. Sometimes that's enough.

  • Kernal Panics when booting Install DVD on new MacBook Pro

First off, let me say that I know that Apple does not officially support OS X Server on their portable machines.
With that out of the way, I have been trying to install Server (the Universal Edition, of course) on the new Santa Rosa MBP that I got last weekend. The Installer DVD will kernal panic when trying to start up the machine. So I took it to my job, where we have a Mac Mini with a Core Solo processor. The Install DVD for 10.4 server boots the mini up just fine. So I put the MBP into target disk mode, and installed server on a partion I had made on the internet MBP disk when I first got it. So the installer has 10.4.7 on it, which I thought might be causing the problem. So with the Mini booted off the MBP partion, I updated the Server install to 10.4.10 and all the other updates. I then restarted the MBP, held down the option key, selected the server partion to boot up from, and the machine still kernal paniced while still booting up (It never gets past the gray Apple Screen with the spinning wheel.
Now I had hoped that the firmware update released today might help with the problem, but when I try to run that installer, it says that the firmware is not needed on my laptop. So I guess they had already installed it at the factory, even though it was not yet publicly availible.
I have looked at the kernal panic logs on the non server version of 10.4 that the machine boots after the kernal panic (when I boot back into server, using the Mini as the boot machine, there is no kernal panic logs), and I have always found the same thing, it looks like something to do with the video driver is causng the problem. The first item that is always in the backtrace is:
    com.apple.NVDAResman(4.5.6)@0x500c4000
So I guess I am just wondering if anyone else out there, with a new SR MBP, has has similar problems trying to run server on their new machines?

The method you must use is outlined here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960
    Best of luck.

  • Mini DVI-Adapter Not Working

Today I went to the Apple Store and got myself one of those fancy new Mini-DVI to DVI adapters, hoping it would work with my screen at home, which I had previously running on the Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter on my original MacBook.
Strangely, when I plugged the cable into the adapter, and into my computer, nothing happened. I did not get video on the screen, nor did my MacBook detect it. I have tried re-plugging the Mini-DVI adapter and clicking Detect Displays in the Displays Preferences multiple times, but no luck.
I have seen the screen work with DVI about a year ago, but that was on one of the original MacBook Pros. Am I better off returning this DVI adapter and instead buying a Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter?
Thanks for any help in resolving this problem.

I have a 22 inch ViewSonic that I got from a friend about a year ago. I did indeed plug the monitor directly into the adapter.
I brought my computer, adapter and cable all into the Apple Store, and they said it was all OK, but did replace my DVI adapter thinking it was probably defective. I got home, tested it on my monitor, but still not working. I tested it on a newer HP monitor that's on the family computer, and oddly it worked there.
A bit of research revealed that the adapter did not send Analog signals on DVI anymore, which confuses me, since the MacBook actually does have Analog signals on that port. I brought my DVI adapter in original packaging in to the Apple store again, and they replaced it with a VGA adapter for free, and sure enough, that solved the problem for me.
Lesson Learned - don't use DVI with older monitors, stay with VGA.

  • What kind of picture quality can I expect from a Mini DVI adapter to Scart?

I currently have my iMac connected to my tv via the Apple Mini DVI adapter and a composite video cable. There are two problems with this, one is the poor picture quality in general, the other is that the tv screen is not filled by the image from the iMac, i.e. there are black spaces on the left and the right of the screen.
So my question is, if I used S-Video to Scart, would it kill the problem with the black borders when viewing Front Row etc..? Also, would there be a significant increase in general picture quality?

Yes, if you can get an s-video cable and plug that into the SCART adapter, that would be better than plugging in composite video.
Clearly, having an SCART connection is not going to "improve" the video going in, you're going to be limited by the lowest quality connection. An s-video connection will provide a higher (but probably not a lot) quality signal than composite video.

  • Is the Mini-Dvi adapter suppose to click into the back on the Mac mini?

Is the Mini-Dvi adapter suppose to click into the back on the Mac mini? It does on my mac book but not on the Mac mini. I sort of have to just jam it in there, no nice clicking sound, and it does not feel very secure.

If after 'jamming it in there' it actually works, then at least you know it's the correct type of adapter. However, if it doesn't work, you are definitely not inserting it correctly or into the correct location. In either case, you may have a damaged port - all the connections on the rear when applied correctly with anything like a decent quality standard type connector should work smoothly. You should never have to 'jam' anything into the back of your mini.

  • Mini-DVI doesn't fit current mini-DVI adapter??

I'm trying to do something relatively simple - connect a second flat panel display to my iMac. The problem is, the mini-DVI adapter being sold by Apple right now is a male plug, and my socket is also male. Argh!
Is there a female/female adapter that will solve this problem for me? Help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
The current Intel iMacs have a MiniDVI port which can use one of the following three adaptors:
    Mini DVI - DVI
    Mini DVI - VGA
    Mini DVI - Composite/S-Video.
However, the iMac G4 uses the Mini VGA port and can use these two different adaptors:
    Mini VGA - VGA
    Mini VGA - Composite/S-Video (1.0/1.25GHz only).
The iMac G4 can output Video or VGA but will only support display-mirroring (there is a firmware hack available to enable dual-display support on some iMac G4s but it is not 100% safe.)
I think you've been sold the wrong adaptor.

  • Help! Problem using Mini-DVI adapter

I'm a teacher, and I need some help.
I've been using a Mitsubishi XD 250 data projector at school. The setup I have is exactly the same as it was last year, but something strange is happening.
The data projector uses VGA, so I have the VGA-to-Mini-DVI adapter from Apple.
I turned on the projector this morning, as I have a presentation for one of my classes today, but it's not working! The projector comes on, and the iMac shows that it recognizes the external display, but the projector says "No Signal." I have no idea what the problem is, as I've tried restarting both the iMac and the projector as well as connecting and disconnecting the cables.
Any suggestions? I suppose it's possible that something happened to the VGA cable over the summer, but is that likely considering that the iMac recognizes the external display?
I really need to give this presentation today, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Dett;
It is probably simply the wrong signal source being set on your projector. This is normally a remote control switch or your projector. I don't know this model but they all have multiple input choices. Change the input until you see your Mac.
    Hope this helps

  • Mini dvi adapter

will the cords i bought a while back for my ipod to play photos on a tv(http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7CB C356E&nplm=M9765G%2FB) work with this?:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E07A&nplm=M9319G%2FA
    Thanks.

I assume you want to send the video from your mac book to some kind of external display.
in that case then no the cables you have will not work since they have a mini jack at one end.
The mini dvi adapter is for sending video out of your mac book to a tv /projector or display through an S video cable (audio and video) or an RCA cable (video only). If using the mini dvi with rca you could plug your current cable into your headphone out jack and use the red and white part of it to send audio to a tv or external speaker.

  • HT3382 With a MacbookAir (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, can you configure the external monitor to FULLY display in portrait mode yet keep the built-in display in landscape mode?

With an 11"-inch Macbook Air (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port:
Can you configure an extended desktop with an external monitor (20") displaying full portrait mode (1200 x 1600 resolution) and keep the built-in display in landscape?
I'd like to see something like
    External monitor / Built-in display

Yes, I can't see why not.
Just give it a try and report back if you have a problem.

  • Dv 6809wm laptop. Computer still does not boot up when battery out and ac adapter plugged in?

dv 6809wm laptop. Computer still does not boot up when battery out and ac adapter plugged in?
It lights up initially for a split second when I push power button, but does not continue to boot up. When ac adaptor is put in it glows blue like it is supposed to. Any suggestions?

i'm going to try to see if a different ac adaptor will work hopefully that solves the issue.

  • IMac Rebooting - Kernal Panic Problem

Hi, I am hoping somebody can shed some light on a situation that has been occuring with my iMac. I am running OS X 10.8.2 4GB RAM, 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. If there are any other details I can provide I will be happy to do so.
I get an involuntary (meaning the iMac just does this without warning) reboot, usually while running a video file which has become more persistent since it started a few months ago. I have re-installed my OS which hasn't helped. If anyone can give me an idea of what might be going on that would be great. Thanks in advance! Here are the details of the Kernal Panic:

Hi, Linc. The Wacom device was disconnected at the time when I tried to run the AHT. I am removing LCC and Little Snitch. Are we doing this to see if I can get AHT to run or to see if it stops the kernel panics? Thanks for your help.
Also, on a side note. I have been browsing these (and other) forums for a while at times when I've needed to figure other problems out or out of curiosity. I don't ever remember seeing reports of these kernel panics before the release of Mouintain Lion. Now the forums seems to be littered with them. Is this something that is exclusive to or at least a lot more common when running Moutain Lion? Just curious.
