Mavericks ruining everything

I downloaded Mavericks last night and recognized that it was going terribly slow. So I went to disk utility and verified the disk and it said that I needed to restart my Mac and hold command R and do a disk repair there. So I did that and it then said, "live file system repair is not supported." So I backed out of it and tried to restart the computer and it came up with the flashing folder with a question mark in it. I then restarted a few more times and it led me to start the internet recovery. Have I lost everything? Is there anything I can do? I can't believe this was released this way!

Mavericks is working just fine on my Macbook Pro from 2011. And it is working fine on many other Mac computer of many different models and configurations.
You probably had a faulty hard drive or drive to logic board cable to begin with.
If you Backed out of the actual Mavericks install that most likely corrupted the drive and that is why you are getting the ? mark.
Is everythng lost? Maybe. You should reinstall the original OS X version on and external drive and see if you can access the internal drive to copy your files from it. If not then yes everything is lost. But since it seems you never made a backup of your system everything would of been lost eventually anyway.

I have a MacBook Pro running Lion. I need to use Lion to run my Dragon. I would like to partition my drive to use Mavericks for everything but the dictation software. I'm a newbie to apple

To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Flash player 11 ruined everything.

on thursday, i turned on my computer and the flash player updated itself with the newest version. flash player 11. until this happened, everything worked fine. my primary use is for youtube. ever since the program updated itself, nothing  works. no video. nada. i can't download anything. my web browser won't open most websites. this program has ruined my computer. i have tried everything under the sun for the last 3 days and have gotten nowhere. uninstall, reboot, reboot again, reinstall, reboot, trouble shooting, de-activating firewall and security anti-virus, disabling hardware accelerators, managing add-ons, enabling them,  then re-activating it. trouble shooting windows. unfortunately, i can't update anything for windows, because the page won't display thanks to your program. i just get a blank screen. so,after having exhausted every possible means of trying to fix my computer, this is the way i see things. it was your program that messed everything on my computer up, therefore,it is up to you to fix it. under the age old rule of "you brake it, you bought it". if this is not fixable, i'm going to lose a whole boatload of very important files, and some of it non replaceable content. the damage would be serious enough to put me out of business. i lose everything.

I am using window 7, my browser is Google Chrome and since your 11.6 flash instalation my computer is totally screwed up!! Half of my stuff won't download, my comptuer is so slow now, I have multiple screens when I scroll up and down. I have no clue what is going on!! I have tried everything and nothing works. WHAT NOW

  • Trouble with Maverick, lost everything on MBP upgrade?

Im not sure what to do next, and afraid I may have lost everything a moment ago
so would really appreciate some help at the moment.
-- Last night I started downloading the Maverick upgrade from app store, woke up and pushed the button to start the install.
-- The screen was showing the green bar at the end stage of the install for an hour, even though it was saying "less than a minute remaining"...
-- I didn't know what to do, so I abandoned without thinking and shut down => restarted => now the computer is taking me through the steps as it did when I first bought the computer.
-- Im afraid I may have wiped the system clean when I aborted the install (?)
-- I started going through the steps, but then stopped when I realized what was happening. Shut down again, restarted in "safe mode" but still getting the set-up (choose your main language) welcome page.
What can I do to get my data back? I moved over to an iMac recently so havent been backing it up with time machine, have a few very important files on the desktop that I would really like to try and recover...
I know this was lame to not have a backup.
Any advice from any of the pros out there,
    please help!

Hi, I had exactly the same situation.
Yesterday I managed to reinstall without loosing any data.
    I did following:
    1) I have installed Maverick OSX once again to external HDD. I pressed CMD-R when booting and selected second option Reinstall OSX and have chosen external drive.
Then I booted from external HDD and WAS ABLE to access all my data on internal HDD. So I did BACKUP and copied them all out to ext HDD.
    2) I removed external HDD with backup and pressed CMD-R during restart. I have selected again second option to Reinstall OSX (this time on internal HDD). Everything went smoothly (except the last minute was much longer, but don't panic again - shame on Apple) after installation has completed and did natural reboot I had all my profiles and all my data ready in computer. No need to restore anything from backup

  • Mavericks ruins navigation. Why did they eliminate the scroll bar?

Mavericks has ruined navigation. You can no longer color code files (except with tiny dots that appear far away from file names in the margin); the scroll bars sometimes appear. Sometimes they don't. Its very difficlt to grab window borders to resize the windows. What is the point of all this?

If you are using an old-style mouse, you might be frustrated. But with any recent pointing device the scroll bars are not really needed. I don't use the scroll bars much because...
I can scroll with my mouse scroll wheel
I can scroll with the trackpad built into all MacBooks
I can scroll with the keyboard using arrow keys, Page Up/Page Down, spacebar...
In other words, with all of these better and faster methods, having to move your mouse all the way over to the edge of the screen to pick at a scroll bar or little arrow is now a relic of the 1980s and is much less efficient than using the direct touch gesture or scroll wheel methods.
As for the window border grabbing, that is a compromise. If you enlarge the target area of the window borders, you reduce the target area for controls within the window or palette itself. The best solution for window resizing is to simply have a little patience, slow down until the resize arrows appear and then grab. Overall, window resizing is more flexible than it has ever been since you can grab any edge now, instead of just one corner as in the older OS Xs.

  • Can't update to Maverick when everything is updated

I just updated to Snow Leopard but, can't update to Maverick.  I got my macbook in May of 2008.  I have the space on my hard drive for the update so I'm not sure what else to look for in my computer to make sure it's ready for the update.  I double checked for more softward updates for my computer after the Snow Leopard installation and updated whatever that was suggested to me.  That still didn't allow me to get Maverick to install.

I just found that it was in my launchpad (little rocket icon on dock) on page 2 (who knew there were more pages!) and it was paused.  Problem solved!

  • OS X Mavericks Slowed Everything

I have trouble opening applications, but specifically, I can't even load Internet websites. It is the slowest OS ever. I have been thinking I should try and redo a full install of OS X Mavericks, but I have no idea what else to do. I have checked my Disk Permissions verify/repair and had no luck with that. I am currently in safemode and internet pages work a little faster, but the web url box flashes strobe lights when I search. If anyone has any ideas, please help me out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15"

I have an early 2011 MBP, and it's very fast.
These problems that people report after upgrading to Mavericks are usually due to bad/old/incompatible third party software that doesn't play well with the new OS.
It would help to give us more information. Etresoft: EtreCheck is a free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer. If you can paste the report here we can take a look and see what might be the problem.

  • Update ruined everything!!

I finally found a cord to start adding music and I noticed an update. Well I did it and lost EVERYTHING!! Not only that but now my wi-fi won't work. It's connected with a high signal and it says there's no connection. This is horrible. I am still under warranty so I guess I will visit an apple store tomorrow. But any help? Or is anyone having the same problem??

Yes I tried everything. It's still not working and saying i'm not connected to the internet even though I am.

  • Mavericks ruined battery life - Tracking down the cause? Mismatched RAM?

My 2011 MacBook Pro 13" is only at 245 out of 1000. My battery life was easily 7 hours until I upgraded to Mavericks. Now I'm lucky to see 5. Right now I'm sitting at 4 and I just barely took it off the charger.
No I'm not running a crapload of apps. Currently, Safari and Mail are the only ones open. I used to run lots more apps on Lion and still acheive 7 hours battery life.
I have disabled a number of background process such as automatic updates and the like. My Bluetooth is off. My infrared remote receiver is off. All in all, I consider myself decently adept at keeping thigns running efficiently.
I'm stumped. Could it be that I am running mismatched RAM sticks? I have 10GB total, 2GB+8GB.
I've done lots of reading, this issue seems to hit people at random. Some people report almost 9 hours of battery with Mavericks, others report that their battery performance has taken a hit.
Could this issue be related to the slow-sleep issue that lots of Mavericks users are experiencing? (Search com.apple.iohideventsystem.queue.tickle in Google; this process is causing a lot of sleep-grief for people)
Is there a terminal command that shows what is going on with my battery?

Forgot to mention, I tried a SMC reset. Twice. No change.

  • Ruined Everything [Sudo pacman -S glibc --force]

I'm new so sorry if i commit any mistake in written at forums, my last post a member call me attention from writthen in capital letter, is like i shout to someone.
So i believe i ruined my arch, because i wrote on terminal:
    Sudo pacman -S glibc --force
My inttention was to update glib, so wine can work, so i believe using --force was a simple way to update it.
So nothing is opening right now, i believe if i restart the system it will not open anymore.
    Any solution, i appreciate
sorry if i dont make my self clear

There were numerous posts on this and even front page news with instructions. I believe you were specifically instructed NOT to use force. Try searching here for a solution, but you may have indeed borked your install.

  • The new update ruined everything.

Well, not everything per se, iTunes still functions properly. Any attempt to update the iPod, however, draws this message:
Anyways, I realize there are FAQs and walk-throughs about solving this problem, but I have tried them all repeatedly and nothing works. I am convinced it is a problem within the new update, and this is not so far-fetched as it seems I am far from alone in having problems with this new and "improved" version.
And what did I give up the ability to update my iPod for? The ability to sync iTunes up to Nike.com.
    Sweet trade.
      Windows XP

First try the usual reboot and if that doesn't help
try a restore.  BTW, make sure you do a backup
and sync before you do the restore if needed.

I lost all my picture , n everything, after upgrade to ios5, I try to restore but just can't, so frustrated, ios5ruin everything, so sad, anyone please help?? Thx

Did you get any error messages?  What happens when you try to restore from backup? Error messages?
If music, the apps themselves and some other items were not in yur iTunes library when you did the update they will not be on the iPod after the update.  This is because the apps themselves (app data is in the backup), music and some other items are not part of the backup and are synced to he iPod during a latter stage of the update.
