Mavericks server time machine restore problem

i have a mac mini with mavericks server installed
i have backed up my imac to the mac mni server without any problems can enter time machine and install files but when trying to do a system restore
This is where my trouble arises, initially the window is populated with a username of "root" which is of course the user name I'm running under on the install disk, I change that to my user name or user nickname (have tried both) and enter my password for the osxbackup.local machine and I end up getting a dialog box with "There was a problem connecting to the server osxbackup.local" it goes on to say Check the server name and ip address and if problem continues contact my administrator.   So I'm stuck here, I know my username and password are correct I've tried variations between my name and nick name but always get the same error.  I get the same error if I use a 10.9.0 install disk as well.  It seems that it is unable to contact the server based on the message but clearly the network is operating or we wouldn't have gotten this far.  The only thing I see is in the error message it says "osxbackup.local." note the period after local.  I assume that is a formatting thing and not an incorrect address and I know of no way to change this anyway. So what I thought would be a "simple matter" has like most things turned into an ordeal getting stuck on something that should be very simple.  Hopefully someone can shed some light on this?

Do not rely on Time Machine to backup OSX Server. It does not work for restores and Apple says not to use it for server. Use Carbon Copy Cloner.
Also, you should Raid 1 mirror the server drives so if one drive fails you have the 2nd drive that keeps running and you just swap out the bad drive and redo the mirror. You also need to have another backup and disaster recovery plan in place in case both hard drives fail. This mean an external backup drive to run carbon copy cloner to. Also some sort of offsite backup is also needed.

  • Help! Time Machine Restore Problem From Leopard Server

    Hi All,
I just did something dumb with my iMac running 10.6.4 and need to restore all data from my time machine backup.
I have a mac mini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 which has a time machine volume on an external USB drive.
I have reinstalled 10.6.4 on the iMac and tried running Migration Assistant to transfer information from a Time Machine backup. I am able to log in to the Time Machine volume successfully but I immediately get an error:
    "The Connection Failed"
I have also tried booting into and restoring from the Snow Leopard DVD and get the same results.
I am reluctant to attempt to configure Time Machine for fear that it'll somehow overwrite the backup I have. I do not want to mess with the permissions on the TM backup in order to clone the backup in advance of configuring TM before I get some advice.
Please help! Lost a lot of sleep last night and my wife is very upset.
Below are some console log errors that indicate something is wrong, but google does not turn up anything concrete on the keywords:

I do have an extra external drive that I can copy this file to, by assigning permissions, but am not sure about how TM hides and secures the files needed. I'm worried about messing up the only copy I have of this data.
Don't change anything in the backups. Ever.
Your best bet may be to do a full system restore of the desired backup from the server to the USB drive; then you should be able to boot the iMac from that.
But if you want to copy the backups, you'll have to be logged-on to the server with an account that has permission to copy the sparse bundle.
If you copy just the desired backup, instead of the whole sparse bundle, it won't be recognized as a Time Machine backup, but might work with either +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant.+

  • Time Machine Restore problem

    Hey all
I got a problem restoring from my time machine backups, what happened was, i reinstalled leopard thing the migration utility was the thing to use, so i went and reinstalled and did that but it wasn't what i wanted, so i looked it up and learnt it was restore i wanted.
So i went back, reformated my hard drive and clicked the restore choice from the drop down menu in the leopard boot dvd, it found the time machine hard drive, but when i click it, it doesn't find any backups, acts like there are none on there, but when i look in disk utility it still has all the used space from the backups.
So now i've reinstalled leopard and the harddrive is there and i can see the backups all sitting there, but when i go to restore it can't see them.
Does anyone know why? i really need to fix this because their are important files on the time machine and i needed my comp restored.
If anyone could help that'd be great!

I'm having a problem restoring an Address Book card. If I have Finder up when I go to Time Machine it looks and acts as I'd expect. If I Address Book is my active window when I go to Time Machine, for some reason the only active option for a backup is "Now". It doesn't allow me to go to any previous backup. When I search for the card that was recently deleted, it doesn't appear. That seems consistent with the fact that Now is the only copy that seems available in Time Machine, but any ideas why I don't have access to earlier versions?

  • Drobo NAS and Time Machine restore problems

My HDD crashed.  I installed a new one.  Reinstalled OSX Mavericks and tried a Migration Assistant from a DROBO 5N NAS (holding the Time Machine sparse.bundles).  Profiles reinstalled, no data, no applications.  Weird.  I have tried Drobo, I have tried Apple consultant - recommended by Apple's support website.  No success in getting the restore to take place with Apple software.  Wondering if I can do this file by file.  I really only care about the 1TB of movies, music, photos I have on iTunes and Aperture backups inside of the sparse.bundle files.  Everything else I can reload.  Please help.  I have been down since July 15 on my home theater and photo library.  Need to get this up and running ASAP.  Everything looks OK on the backup file.  When I try to simply copy the data files to my new HDD I get the dreaded OSX file copy error after about 200GB - which takes an incredibly long amount of time on my wireless home network (about 5 hours).  Really need an expert to help out on this one.  Please let me know if you can.
    Thanks,
    GJM120

    Hi Bret,
You state it's running 10.5.8 but that it's only 9 months old; those two don't match up. If it is only 9 months old, bring it in to an Apple Store ("genius" bar appointment) and have them check it over. It sounds like it may be a HD issue to me.

  • Leopard Server Time Machine restore permissions

I am using 10.5 server as an OD master. It is also the primary user home directory location. I am using time machine to backup all of the user directories. While using the time machine interface I can browse to any folder and any file. However, as soon as I go 'back in time' all of the user folders become unaccessible and have a red circle with a white line in it (the 'do not enter' sign). I am logged in as an admin that has full posix permissions on all folders. Any thoughts how to solve this?

    Munroe Sollog wrote:
Do you know how it is kept separate?
The same way it's kept separate on their Macs. Each user account has a password and files have permissions; the structure of TM backups is the same (the permissions are stored differently, but the effect is the same).
. . . I don't see how having them give me their password and then having them reset once I am done having full access to their account is any more secure/private.
That wouldn't be my first choice either, but since you've already said you don't want them doing their own restores, that's about the only other choice.

  • Time Machine Restore problems

So recently my Mac's hard drive got messed up so I just reinstalled leopard with the installer disk since I've been using time machine to back up my files. So now i've been tryin to use one of the restore points from time mahine and its just stuck at the restore screen with the progress bar not even showing anything. Its been like this for more than an hour for sure so i'm not quite sure what the problem is. It's not showing a estimated time for restore so i'm thinking somethin is wrong. Does anyone know what the problem is?

The progress bar, often as not, is just kidding about what it shows. However, if you think your restore is truly stuck try to see if you can cancel it.
Did you use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair both your internal and your Time Machine disks before you started your restore? If not, you should do so.
Also, unless you have deliberately excluded your system from Time Machine backups it is not necessary to reinstall Leopard from the install DVD to do a full restore. Each Time Machine backup is a snapshot of your drive, including the system, so when you restore everything that was on your hard drive will be exactly like it was when that particular backup was made.

  • Time Machine Restore Problems:  USB --- Firewire

I've got a MacBook running OS X 10.5.6, 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 112 GB internal HD, 300 GB External Firewire HD, and a Burly enclosure w/ two 750 GB SATAII Barracuda drives in a RAID I config hooked up via USB. I have Time Machine set to backup the internal drive and 300 GB external firewire drive to the Burly RAID.
I'm having trouble restoring files located on the external firewire drive with Time Machine - it returns the following error:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "File.ext" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I have successfully restored files to the internal hard drive, so this seems to be associated with restores to the firewire HD.

Continuing to trouble shoot this problem, I ran disk utility on both the Burly RAID and external firewire drives. The Burly RAID passed verification, but the external firewire drive didn't. The repair operation returned the following error:

  • Time Machine Restore Problem on A New Hard Drive

I am trying to restore my data from my time machine after a hard drive replacement which was done for me at my local Apple Store today. I started my Mac with the new drive and it starts like a new Mac. It then asked me during the first boot if I wanted to transfer from my time capsule which I selected. The transfer process then commenced taking 8 hours. This completed and then it took me Registration Information. This is a form which I filled in but the Continue button is greyed out even though the form is complete. The only field that I cannot enter data into is My Account (a drop down which won't provide me with any options to select). I assume the reason for the continue button being greyed out is because I cannot choose from My Account. However there is no way to select it. So I am in Limbo here. My data has been transfered but I am stuck in this process and can't Go Back (it is also greyed out). ESC doesn't work either. Any suggestions.PLEASE HELP!

    Try restoring the specific files.

  • Time Machine restore problem with network drive

Hi, I switched from PC to Mac. I bought a Lacie Network Space 2 (network hd) in an apple store (turns out it's NOT an apple store, it's an apple premium reseller according to the 90 days free telephone support guy, and apple's policy is then: you should have bought a 'time capsule' then.) That doesn't help me now. So I'm hoping some of you might have had this or similar trouble before. The Lacie drive is able to back up my macbook through time machine. It recognizes the drive and it does my backups on a time machine enable share on the hard drive. So I thought it worked like a charm. Until i wanted to go back to a previous date and restore all my data. I read you gotta start from the mac os install dvd and choose the restore option in utility. It recognizes the lacie harddrive. But when i want to connect to it it will say connection failed! I tried this over wifi (the hard drive connect to my linksys router with ethernet cable) and i tried this with the hard drive directly connected to the macbook with ethernet cable. It always finds the harddrive but when i want to connect to it to choose a previous date to restore, i can't even get there because it will say the connection failed. I'd really appreciate some help, because I tried to go on support pages and look up an answer, called apple, but can't really figure out what's wrong. So it can backup, it can restore single or multiple files in time machine, but it can't restore the whole OS when used with the install disc? Also made a dmg file with disk utility, but this one doesn't recognize the network drive. Finder does however. Any tips? Any at all, please?

    Fototom wrote:
I had to mark a 'time machine' checkbox in the Lacie UI for it to be able to work as a time machine drive. So the backups work fine without special terminal commands. It's just weird that it won't restore the full OS back when started up with the install DVD.
Whatever the +LaCie UI+ is, that's probably why you can't do the full restore. That may be doing the equivalent of the Terminal command, to "fool" Time Machine into thinking it's backing-up to a supported destination. But you can't do that when booted from your SL Install disc, so Time Machine can't find the network drive.
I tried the option during Setup Assistant to transfer data earlier, but it won't recognize the drive at that time.
Yes, that's likely for the same reason.
BUT I didn't know about *migration manager*. So the option of installing mac osx again and then creating another user and using the migration assistant, that DOES recognize the time machine backups, will surely work.
Never say "surely" until you know
It would be nice to skip the extra step of having to install the OS first, but this will definitely be a valid option to restore. So for now i'll mark this item solved.
Let us know how it turns out.
If anyone has even a speedier, better option to backup and restore a total disc image (or time machine backup), please let me know.
The time involved is probably about the same; it's just in two steps instead of one.
And there's only one step if you use a "supported" destination: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.

  • Mail problem after Time Machine restore

    New to the community..........hello everyone!
I just did a Time Machine restore and everything seems to be fine except
for the fact that my mail seems to be stuck.........spinning as if there was mail to be sent out?
    I found a post with a similar problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1897021&tstart=0
Just wondering if I should follow the advice mentioned on that post or is there an easier way to resolve this issue?
    Thanks

  • Can I use a Time Machine restore from an older OS to Mavericks?

I ask because I tried about 2 years ago and had no luck. Here's a little back-story so my situation isn't confusing...
My iMac (2010) has been having tons of issues lately. More specifically, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks last week, it came back with S.M.A.R.T. errors after a scan, so it wouldn't allow me to update. So, in preparation for the HDD to crap out on me, I did frequent back-ups using Time Machine. Well, the day finally came and my iMac won't "turn on" anymore. When I turn it on, it sits at the Mac loading screen for several minutes and then just goes to a blank white screen. (NOTE: This isn't part of my question but if anyone has any suggestions on fixing this, please let me know, thanks!)
So, back to my question. If I buy a new iMac or a new macbook or whatever, will it be possible to use my Time Machine back-ups to restore everything on it or will it not allow me to because the operating systems are different? As mentioned, I attempted to make a restore on my friend's macbook that I purchased as a spare but when I tried, it came back saying "Different operating systems, cannot restore" or something to that degree. Is there a way around this? Do I have to somehow downgrade the OS on my new machine?
Luckily, I use iTunes for all my movies/music & Adobe Creative cloud so I can easily restore those on any machine but my desktop personal data, photos, etc are on the Time Machine restore. Help me if you can, thanks in advance!

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. They can also give you an estimate.

  • Mountain Lion Server Web Server not working after time machine restore

Our Mountain Lion Server (mac mini) lost its drive yesterday.  We got a new mac mini and did a time machine restore.  Everything in the Server seems to be working (users, groups, file shares, etc) except for the web server.
Trying to connect to the server results in safari not being able to connect to the server.  Even just clicking on the "view server website" link in the Server app doesn't work.
We've tried stopping / restarting the services.  We have confirmed that the files in Library / Server with the web pages were restored.
Are there any gotchas, troubleshooting steps or guides anyone can point me to?  I'd like to get our wiki back.

  • Will Time Machine restore software problems as well as data?

    Hi all -
I've got a 20" aluminum (2007) iMac with Leopard (all updates installed) and Time Machine. I'm having a shutdown problem that I'm trying to resolve. Yesterday, the computer started powering itself off randomly, as if someone pulled the power plug. I ran both the quick and extended Apple Hardware Tests, and both came up clean (no errors). I'm thinking this may be a software problem.
I'd like to reload Leopard to clean up the software. However, I already tried doing a Restore via Time Machine yesterday, and the problem did not go away. I restored to the previous day - prior to when the shut downs started happening.
My question is - If I reload Leopard using the "Restore" feature of Time Machine, does that also copy any problems I had backed up in software to the reloaded system? My guess is yes, since all of my applications remain intact after the Time Machine Restore.
That said, I find Time Machine to be absolutely brilliant in its simplicity and functionality, and think it should be in every single computer user's hands.
At any rate, I'm fearing that I'm going to have to do a clean install and then reinstall all of my software manually to get a truly clean system, then restore data manually via my Time Machine backup. I hope I'm wrong.
Can anybody shed some light? Thanks,
    Shelly

it really does back up almost everything, even broken files. Go back to the initial backup and restore from that. If that doesn't fix it, you've got hardware problems.
Crashes are one thing, hangs another, but actual shutdowns where the computer just goes completely off really indicate hardware problems. Software by itself won't do that, even if it's broken.

  • Restore Lion OS from Lion Server Time Machine Backup?

I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.  I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.  In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably.  Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.  I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion.  QUESTION:  When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server?  I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine.  My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.  I'd really love to be able to do this with Time machine.  Any chance?  or do I need to do the dark deed of 2 days of backup?

Sorry, I don't mean to be stupid, but I want to be sure.  My impresion of Time machine disk images (I'm not a computer genius, but I'm , lets say, an expert novice) is that disk images (my term for the 'total view' of a computers main disk), differ depending on the OS.  I assume that applications and preferences referenced under SL could not be seamlessly imported into a Lion environment.  I'm assumng that the upgrade to Lion server has irrevocaby altered my startup/main volume into a "Lion Server" volume, and that if I try to pull my applications/data/preferences/mailboxes back onto a fresh Lion interface, it won't work.  Are you saying I'm wrong, and that I can simply erase my disc, clean install Lion via an internet connection, and re-import my "lion Server- altered' stuff back from aLion-server Time Machine disk image, seamlessly, into a Lion OS environment?  Sorry to be so concrete, but my wife will kill me if I %$@ the bed on this.  I appreciatre your help.

  • Problem after Time Machine restore

So i just did a time machine restore since i replaced the HD in my old macbook, and whenever i start up the machine it stays at grey screen and eventually pulls up a folder with a ? mark. But if I hold down option at start up and select the drive, it boots fine, even if i do a restart from start up settings in system preferences it works fine. Just if I'm booting after shut down, it won't work without holding option key, Is there something I did wrong, or anyway I could fix it?

Are the specs for the replacement drive, especially for power consumption, similar to those for the original drive? If not, it may be that new drive takes too long to spin up from a cold start or some similar, specification related issue is causing this problem.
You also should make sure that the partition scheme of the drive is not MBR & that the file format of the startup volume is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." Disk Utility will tell you both of these characteristics when you select the drive & the volume respectively from the list on the left. (Look at the bottom of the window for this info.)
You can also try resetting PRAM & then reselecting the startup disk in the system preference.
