Mavericks Shutdown Button Behaviour

Hey,
is there an app or an option to bring back the old shutdown button behaviour (pushing shutdown button brings up an shutdown dialog). Don't need ctrl shortcut or something else. Sometimes I miss the delete button and my display turns off, that hurts.
Using Macbook AIr 13 mid 2013.
Best regards

> Imap accounts are designed to sync with their clients.
One would hope so, at least after a fashion, but this misses the point. "Sync" in this context is not a word that appears in the late  Mark Crispin's specification for IMAP 4Rev 1 (RFC 3501). It is expected that when clients connect to the server they interrogate the server to ensure that they have an up-to-date and accurate view of the messagess on the server, but there is no requirement in the RFC specification that they download and keep complete copies of every message: generally the headers are sufficient for this. The current obsession with perfect synchronisation (actually replication) of everything via the 'Cloud'  should not be confused with IMAP's simpler client-server philosophy.
That is not to say that there aren't issues with IMAP 4 Rev 1, not least around multiple contemporaneous connections to the same account, as anyone who has simultaneous connections open from desktop and mobile devices will know. Crispin's imapd implementation (UW-imapd) - which I use - was not good on this. The future of IMAP seems uncertain following Mark Crispin's death but its not really helpful for Apple, Google or whoever to unilaterally corrupt the current standard,
> If you do not want that use a POP account instead.
Again, you miss my point - which is not about synchroization but about downloading entire messages. They are not the same thing.

since I installed Mavericks, I can't shut down any more my macbook pro with the "shutdown" button on the keyboard !!
Any idea to resolve this problem ?
    Thanks.

What happens when you try ?. Mavericks changed the way that the power button works, so that you have to press/hold it to see the Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shut Down choices.

Either visit an apple store or call 1-800-MY-APPLE. You can check your warranty status on your iPhone using the web address below, and as long as your phone is still under warranty, and has not sustained accidental damage (liquid, dropped, etc) then they'll fix it right up! Apple Store will fix it for you on the spot, you can mail it in to be fixed by calling tech support on the 800 number listed above.

Have you installed any applications recently?  A task killer maybe?  You can try rebooting the phone and see if that helps.

  • Kdemod shutdown button missing in the menu

I have installed kdemod and not able to find the shutdown button
I see only logout, lock and switchuser, suspend to disk and sleep to ram
Can anyone suggest how to bring the shutdown button up

I found that kdm and gdm login manager shows the shutdown option
I am using slim login manager
That's pretty much the explanation. I haven't looked into it much, but my guess is it's related to slim starting things through ~/.xinitrc since I also don't get a shutdown options from a startx from cli. I don't know what gdm and kdm are doing that gives KDE that access though it might be possible to add that to slim.

  • Disable Shutdown Button while using Terminal Services

When I remote desktop into the server remotely, the shutdown button shut's down the server.  Granted I have the reason for shutdown turned on, so some less skillful admin's have to fill in the reason and click okay before they really shutdown the server... but
Is it possible to replace the shutdown button with a Log Off button for remote sessions or disable it all together?
Seems like it could be a huge problem if I (or someone logged in as Admin) shutdown the server that's 4 hours away.

Absolutely, we have had this since 2000 (though we do tend to change the name in each new policy editor) :-).
In 2008 you need to use group policy and set the user config -> admin templates -> start menu and taskbar -> remove and prevent access to the shutdown, restart, sleep and hibernate comands = enabled
You probably want to apply this to a machine OU with loopback policy so it only applies to terminal severs.
You may also want to filter it to apply only to the remote desktop users group (this way it only applies when you logged in remotely).
if you still need to shutdwon the remote machine when remotely connected then use ctrl-alt-end to bring up the remote SAS and the shutdown button is there in the bottom right hand corner.

  • What happens once an user click shutdown button

when an user clicks shutdown button, what OS does
    1. will it stop all the process running in the background right away and spend time in closing those?
    2. apps (exe) which were running won't be having any control and it is fully operating system which does everything
to kill all the running processes right?
    3. What is the exact flow that OS follows to kill apps when shutdown button is pressed.?

    Hello Sarath_dnv,
About the Windows Shutdown details, please take a look at the following article.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/08/delivering-fast-boot-times-in-windows-8.aspx
    1. The user initiates a shutdown by selecting “shut down” from the Start menu, or by pressing the power button; or an application initiates shutdown by calling an API such as ExitWindowsEx() or InitiateShutdown().
    2. Windows broadcasts messages to running applications, giving them a chance to save data and settings. Applications can also request a little extra time to finish what they’re doing.
    3. Windows closes the user sessions for each logged on user.
    4. Windows sends messages to services notifying them that a shutdown has begun, and subsequently shuts them down. It shuts down ordered services that have a dependency serially, and the rest in parallel. If a service doesn’t respond, it is shut down forcefully.
    5. Windows broadcasts messages to devices, signaling them to shut down.
    6. Windows closes the system session (also known as “session 0”).
    7. Windows flushes any pending data to the system drive to ensure it is saved completely.
    8. Windows sends a signal via the ACPI interface to the system to power down the PC.

  • Submit button behaviour based on signature reason.

I have a form where the signature requires two reasons (Approved/not approved).  On submit I want the data to be forwarded if approved but sent back to the sender if rejected.
    Any assistance appreciated.

    Hi Niall,
Like the neat scripting.  However I was trying to avoid the extra radio button click.  In the signature block I have mandated the signatee to choose an option in the signature reason message box.  That doesn't seem to save anywhere and the script I used fails to find a result.  I may have to resort to tried and true.

    Hi,
Are the options for approved or not approved set up as radio buttons? If so then you could specify the values of the radio buttons as the appropriate email addresses (see the Object > Binding palette). See an example here: https://acrobat.com/#d=qE1IszHcL6589QQYB7ceGg.
Then a custom email button could use the rawValue of the radio button exclusion group, as the To email address. See examples here (third button is a custom email submit button): http://assure.ly/fiTm2i.
    Hope that helps,
    Niall

  • [XFce4] panel shutdown button not working

I just pacman -Syu'd for the first time in a loooooong time. Bad habit, I know. Anyway, it was relatively painless in the end, but there were a few annoyances that I had to fix. One of them I still haven't figured out.
I use XFce4, and the shutdown button on the panel (provided by the 'action buttons' plugin) stopped working. Clicking it now results in a dialog asking me whether I want to close the panel, rather than the familiar dialog with 'reboot', 'logout' and 'shutdown' buttons. Funny thing is, when I select the 'logout' option in the menu, this dialog does appear correctly.
Scouring the net for this problem yields a number of different solutions.  Strangely enough, everything seems to be configured correctly already.
    - I have set up sudo to allow the execution of xfsm-shutdown-helper without a password.
    - I have set up /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf to allow shutting down and rebooting the system for my username (as per this topic)
    - I have included 'ck-launch-session' in my .xinitrc file, which reads "exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session".
Am I missing something? Are there any logs I could check for clues perhaps? I literally haven't the faintest idea what I'm doing wrong Thanks!

Checking on my other PC it does indeed look like /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf is no longer relevant. What is the relation between polkit and PolicyKit? Should I configure this somewhere else now?
R00KIE wrote:On my .xinit I have 'exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4' and things work as intended, I don't remember now if I have done any other change to make it work. I think you also need to have hal running so check that too (I guess you have it running as things were working fine before).
I guess the only difference is the 'dbus-launch', but that seems unrelated. I'll try adding it tomorrow anyway, just to rule it out.
Thanks for your reply, and sorry for not responding earlier, I lost track of this post.

  • After upgrade to Mavericks shutdown with start button doesn't work

    Hallo!
    I have a MacBookPro 15"/ 2,66 GHz/ Intel i7 (before upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9.x was installed):
It was always possible to press the start button for about 1 second and this opened a popup where you could chosse "shut down", "sleep" or "cancle". After the upgrade to Mavericks this function doesn't work any more. When I press the start button the MBP goes into the sleep mode.
Any idea what happened to this feature?
    Thanks

The feature is still there, but the power button function changed with Mavericks to be like this:
one-click = put the machine to sleep
click and hold (3 secs) = display shutdown dialog box
click and hold (10 secs) = hard power off

  • Shutdown button doesn't work in Yosemite

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Yosemite but when I try to SHUT DOWN my Mac using the POWER ON/OFF BUTTON, nothing happens, so I have to go to the Apple logo and shutdown from there. Anyone know why the POWER ON/OFF (SHUT DOWN) BUTTON isn't working?
    Thank you.

  • Power button behaviour

By default, when pressing the power button on my mac, OSX pops up a dialog asking me what I want to do (Shutdown, sleep, restart): is there a way to change this behaviour so that pressing the power button has the same effect as selecting sleep?
Likewise, and more importantly, I have a keyboard with a suspend button that when pressed pops up the same "shutdown, sleep, restart" menu. I'd like this button to directly chose sleep, but can't find where I configure this :/

    I fear it too
I'll check it as soon as I get home (now I'm at work) but I think that the mac mini doesn't support that option, or that it's simply hidden in the pref pane :/
I fount it should be changeable using a command in the terminal but I don't think it's a good idea...
    The command is
    sudo pmset powerbutton 1
to turn the power button to sleep button
    sudo pmset powerbutton 0
to make the power button show the "sleep, restart, shutdown" dialog again
