Mavericks slow login/erratic performance

I am having trouble with Mavericks on my Mac Mini.  I have eight user accounts (1 administrator, 1 guest, 2 regular users, and 4 managed with parental controls) and when logging in to any user it takes several minutes before everything is running at full speed.  If I try to start any applications right when the dock and menu bar are loaded it will sometimes bounce for a couple of minutes before the application starts.  General performance is also somewhat sluggish/erratic.  There is nothing consistent but I often get the pinwheel when surfing the internet or doing just about anything else.  I know this is a vague description but I can't really pin it on any particular situation.  I know I only have 4 GB of RAM but the computer is really only used for surfing the internet and a few non-resource-intensive applications.  I have posted my EtreCheck output and most recent console log below.  Can anyone help me?

That log extract was just from me logging in and posting this.  I didn't have any beach balls then but it was kind of slow to get logged in and fully functional.  I looked back as far as the log goes (9/21) and didn't see any more KeychainMigrator messages.  I've posted a log extract below from all of today.  I have logged in a couple of times, opened several of the applications that I typically use and visited several of the most common websites that I visit.  I only saw beach balls briefly a couple of times that appeared to coincide with Google Drive loading in the menu bar.  I will try to post a log when it starts getting slow and having more beach balls.

  • Mavericks slow and erratic

    My Mavericks experience so far:
Slower launch and response times (to the point of annoyance) for several applications e.g. Mail, Safari, System Preferences.
Erratic dock behavior (freeze) and appearance (random changes between monitors) when using multiple monitors.
I thought only Microsoft could mess up OS launches... Great job Apple!

What font are you using? Does the same thing happen when you use the keyboard directly?
You might try trashing the .plist in Home/Library/Preferences which has Keyboardviewer in its name.
Personally I've never had any problem with Keyboard Viewer like you describe. There is no alternative that I know of.

  • Is Apple working on Mavericks slowness?

Once I installed OSX 10.9, I immediatly noticed it was solwer on my 13-inch MBP Mid 2012 i5 core, but i thought it was to the fact that it was the first release of the os.
But after installing 10.9.2 it is still slow, maybe slower, in all the most common operations, such as  booting up or launching apps.
Do you think Apple is working on 10.9.2 slowness? I am really thinking to downgrade to Mountain Lion.

  • Slow Boot Up, Slow Login caused by AHCI so we used IDE Emulator. What is the ramification of that?

    Hi,
We have Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise and x64 machines and we have slow boot up and slow login issue for a while.  We thought it was clearly group policy causing it but it can be misleading because we have other machines that use the same
GPO but has no issue.  On the other hand, the problem is prominent with a specific HP Model (Elitedesk 800G1 SFF) so when we focused on that model, we reinstalled/reformat the computer but to no avail, the machine would still be be slow as soon as it
joins the domain.  The other option is to minize the services and startup items, but we can prove that other machines boot up fine with all the services and startup items running.  So "Msconfig" helps but as much as possible, we don't want
to do this because we have several computers with slow issues.  We also installed  KB2775511 but we don't get consistent result.
What gave us consistent result was changing the BIOS setting from AHCI to IDE but I would like to know what are the ramification of not using AHCI.  Our new machines were delivered with this BIOS setting so we suppose that this is the most appropriate
setting however, it screws up other things.
What are we missing, how different is the performance and is this change not recommended?  Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I just add another method to diagnose your problem. You can try to use xbootmgr to collect a boot trace of your system.
Refer to the link below for more details about the trace steps:

  • Extremely slow macbook pro performance

I have a 4GB Macbook Pro 13 inch, less than 1/2 the memory is in use.  Computer startup can take up to 10 minutes, and opening any app can take 1-2 minutes.  Apps are constantly stalling, and Safari is constantly showing the spinning wheel of doom.  It's running OS X 10.9.5.  It's at the point where my iPhone is a much better option that using my Mac.  Any suggestions on speeding it up?  I used to have MacKeeper on it, but the Genius Bar at the Apple store told me the uninstall it, as it often can cause a slow performance.

  • WordPress Admin on A1 and D1-Series Windows 2012 R2 VM is Slow with Erratic Response - Can Improve?

Is there a way to make standard, small VMs more responsive and less erratic within WordPress admin?
This week I provisioned an A1 Ubuntu (LAMP) VM and an A1 Windows 2012 R2 (WIMP) to run WordPress sites with WooCommerce shopping carts (five to start with), and was disappointed with the slow TCP/IP response and processing, which made working in /wp-admin/
almost unbearably slow. The installs were primarily by-the-book default, having followed Azure documentation.
I decided I needed more power behind the VM so I provisioned a "Standard" WEST US - D1 Series, 1 core, 3.5 GB RAM 50 GB SSD VM with 2012 R2 and a WAMP stack installed via Web Platform Installer. This was a "stock" install with WP talking
to an localhost MySQL engine. The D1 experience was very similar to the A1 experience with a CPU in the teens-to-less than 50%. Memory usage never exceeded 50%, yet /wp-admin/ was very slow. Frequently database-heavy jobs, like WP-Optimize would time out.
*Note* Both A1 and D1 VM served up cached (front-end) web pages in around two seconds. Barely acceptable, but acceptable.
Throughout the week I noticed that the instance would slow to a crawl or become unresponsive. No HTTP response, and I could not RDP or FTP into the instance. PHP logs showed time-out errors as did MySQL logs. This happened two or three times a day. On Wednesday,
my instance rebooted automatically with a kernel stop error in the event logs. TCP/IP response was erratic and slowdown were sporadic.
*Note* Azure Status showed all green checks for the WEST US region whenever I had sporadic slowdowns or issues.
Late yesterday I provisioned a Rackspace Dallas Fort Worth Windows 2012 R2 2-thread core, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB raid-10 SSD VM with the same installation (Web PI WIMP - "stock"). The difference in response times is striking. Rackspace is around a second
    faster for most network GETs.
I've invested a lot of time in Azure (have thirty small non-VM web-sites) and like the flexibility, but not the slow and erratic VM response. I've researched a lot of blog posts here and on Stackoverflow but haven't been able to speed things up. Is there something
special that can be done to improve processing WordPress on Azure VMs?

    Hi,
Based on my experience, in general, you can get better performance with a larger size of an Azure VM.
Why don't to create a WordPress website from the gallery in Azure and select the region closest to you as the hosting location?
Create a WordPress website from the gallery in Azure
    Besides,
an unexpected restart of an Azure VM may be
    due to
Windows Azure deploys updates to the host OS to provides a reliable, efficient and secure platform for hosting your applications. If the VM is not in an availability set, the notification would be sent to the Account administrators.
It is recommended to add two or more virtual machines in an Availability Set. This configuration ensures that during either a planned or unplanned maintenance event, at least
one virtual machine will be available and meet the 99.95% Azure SLA.
    Why
    did my Azure VM restart?
Manage the availability of virtual machines
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Firefox slow, laggy, choppy performance on powerful PC. Other browsers working fine. Help?

    i7 930 @ 3.8GHz, 6GB RAM@1600MHz, Intel SSD and Nvidia 660 Ti 2GB.
That's my PC. It starts up in seconds, it's 100% stable, can run any video/audio production software with ease, and play any game at high/max settings.
But somehow, Firefox doesn't seem to care.
It keeps freezing up, lagging, and driving me crazy in the process. I've tried everything: reinstalling, resetting FF, removing addons, reinstalling addons, doing clean installs.... nothing. I've tried chrome. Works fine. IE even works better than FF.
All this started in the last year or two. Slowly. I've felt each version getting slower and slower, and now it's just ridiculous. I open like 10 tabs and FF grinds to a halt, it takes 5-10 seconds for it to un-freeze sometimes. And facebook timeline scrolling?! forget about it. the more you scroll, the worse the freezing gets, to the point where I'm forced to restart FF and start all over again!
I've been with FF since v1, I've watched it grow into the best browser of all, but I've also watched chrome rightfully take that title away in the last few years, because of what FF has turned into.
I'd much rather stick with FF, but the frustration is getting out of hand. I can't take the slow and buggy performance, and I can't seem to find a solution.
So is there a way to make firefox work as it should on a fast PC, or do I have to switch to chrome to get the performance back?
    (Win7 x64 SP1, ADSL 20 MBit)

As I have seen That you have installed so much extension which is the main reason behind the slowness. Since they need some memory each time you start working with firefox.
However do try to disable those extensions which are not used regularly ,when you need to used them just enable from addons section.
Also try with [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Safe Mode] and check whether the problem still persist or not.
Read This Thread : [http://mzl.la/1BAQIeY Many CPU Processes]
These are some steps will help you to fix issues like slowness:
If monitoring tools shows High ram used by firefox then it might be due to Hardware acceleration enabled . Uncheck them from '''Options'''>'''Advance''' >under '''General''' tab.
Sometimes plugins becomes the cause,so Check whether all plugins are up to dated or not from '''Addons''' >'''Plugins''' tab.
See this thread for other reasons : http://mzl.la/14CBA3o

  • Windows XP slow login when plugged into external network

    Hi,
A about 9 months ago XP SP3 was rolled out with an image upgrade, since then there has been rumblings of slow logins when connected to an external network (eg a ADSL modem at home) but no evidence etc.
    About the environment
    Windows XP SP3
    Novell Client 4.91 SP5 IR1
    ZENworks 7
Roaming profiles with folder redirection for Desktop, My Documents.
We have just rolled out another upgrade to a number of base apps and this has come up again but with some evidence and some time for me to investigate.
What I have discovered is this:
When a laptop is plugged into an external network (I have used an ADSL network here at work to test this) the login for a user takes about 2 minutes with SP2 and about 3.5 minutes with SP3. This is done checking the workstation only box.
    This happens consistently on workstations.
What I have done to narrow this down is as follows:
Removed ZENworks 7 agent. Login times improved dramatically
Installed older versions of ZENworks agent, all results the same, extra slow logins experienced with all versions tried.
Installed ZEN agent and removed Novell Client, still the same slow login.
Created a local user, fast logins experienced even with the ZEN agent installed.
Disabled all ZEN services and logged in with an eDir account, slow logins all the same.
Removed all policies from user and workstations, this made a slight difference but nothing much
    Disabled ZEN, no difference either
    Disabled NMAS, no difference either
Removed some IDM installer we had rolled at the same time, no difference.
    Here are the timed results.
XP with SP2 on corporate network = 30 secs
XP with SP3 on corporate network = 35 secs
XP with SP2 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 2min
XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 3min 26 secs
XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem NOT plugged in = 45 secs
XP with SP3 local user with ADSL modem = 45 secs
So it's down to the ZEN agent really, but the update to SP3 hasn't helped either.
I enabled debug logging and got the following from the log, usernames and servers have been removed:

    OK, I'm out of Ideas.
I was hoping for something much bigger :>
You may want to post in the MS Forums in regards to the Timeout in that
    part.
I would not mention ZCM or Client32 as that will just cause pushback.
In short, there appears to be a long timeout for the redirected profile
that extends beyond just client timeout settings.
You may want to post the the Client32 Forum to see if they have anymore
    timeout tweaks.
You may be able to use the "Bad Name Cache" to pre-popate that server so
you can gain the 10 seconds w/o needing to disable the workstation service.
Perhaps the "Give Up on Requests to SAs", but I've never messed with
that before. Wait before giving up on DA may help too.
    Just guessing now.

  • Slow login time from GDM to Gnome

    Hello everyone,
for a long time now I have been experiencing very slow login procedures. It takes about 40 to 60 seconds after I entered my password to get to Gnome shell (almost feels like Windows).
There have been discussions about similar problems (e.g https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=98901) and I have read a lot of them, but never found a solution.
Isn't there some kind of log file where I can see what's taking so long?
    any help would be appreciated!

  • Slow Logins

    Hi guys,
I'm running an Intel XServe running 10.5.2 Server as an OpenDirectory Master. The login times are extremely slow and after about 5 - 10 people login no one else can login. I looked through some of the logs and I found some strange errors in the LDAP log that I'm wondering about:
    Apr 25 16:14:20 xserve slapd[75]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)
    Apr 25 16:14:50: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
This error is repeated hundreds of times.
    Thanks in advance,
    Graham

    Hi Graham
I too have experienced incredibly slow logins with 10.5.2 on a brand new Xserve. I have also experienced intermittent issues since a failed attempt to de-couple a directory crashed the entire system. I have run all the usual software maintenance on the machine, and have repaired the attached RAID a number of times. I haven't looked into this much yet since the machine seems to be working okay once logged in and there are only so many hours in a day.
I'll try and check the logs on Monday, see if I am seeing the same thing but I don't know how long I will be in the office. I'll get back to you when I can.

  • Slow logins with Kerberos?

I've noticed that logins have been quite slow: specifically, there seems to be a delay of several minutes between typing in the user name and password in the login window before the login is successful and the desktop begins to initialise. This appears to be the case even if I wait several minutes after the login dialog is displayed, allowing launchd to start up further daemons in the background. I'm using Kerberised logins on Leopard Server 10.5.8, and I should add that this delay seems a recent change in behaviour, although I can't tie it to any specific patch. What catches my eye from the logs is the following entries from secure.log:
Dec 1 18:29:15 <hostname> loginwindow[80]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    Dec 1 18:29:16 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: Showing Login Window
    Dec 1 18:29:49 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: User info context values set for <user>
    Dec 1 18:32:49 <hostname> /System/Library/CoreServices/CCacheServer.app/Contents/MacOS/CCacheServer[299]: Starting up.
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: Login Window done
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> com.apple.SecurityServer[36]: Succeeded authorizing right system.login.console by client /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app for authorization created by /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app.
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> loginwindow[80]: Login Window - Returned from Security Agent
As best as I can read this, there's a three minute delay in login because the credential caching service isn't standing by to manage the tickets generated by the Kerberised login and isn't made available promptly. I don't know if this is itself the crux of the problem or indicative that some other operation is having problems and takes this long to look up the credential cache service's Mach port and get launchd to start it up or to acquire credentials to populate into the cache. I should add that all name services and the Kerberos instance from which credentials are acquired are local to the server, which may or may not be part of the problem.
Bottom line is that taking three minutes to process a login request makes for a very frustrating experience (let's not mention the subsequent delays in getting all the programs launched by the dock to page in and complete their start-up and how difficult it is to get anything in the desktop session to respond while the system chugs along).

    Hi
No. It probably means you've posted in the wrong forum. Your question really relates to an OD Master environment and OSX Server. In which case the forum you really want is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=236
Slow login's could be down to a number of things. If the problem is affecting all clients then I would look at the 'health' of your DNS/DHCP Services first. Can clients resolve the server correctly on both pointers? Can the Server resolve itself the same way? Is Kerberos still running on the Server? Kerberos as you know is time-dependent, in which case are the Client's clocks in sync with the Server's? Is there enough space on the drive hosting home profiles? If the drive is not the Boot OS is there enough space on the boot OS? Have you tried flushing Client Workstation's caches yet?
As you can see only more questions rather than answers I'm afraid. We could continue on this forum if you wish but I feel it would probably be best if you posted in the other forum. More chance of it being seen by guys who do this sort of thing every day.

  • Will installing OS X mavericks slow down my late-2007 macbook pro?

Will installing OS X mavericks slow down my late-2007 macbook pro? If so, is it worth it?
I currently run OSX 10.7.5 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb mem.

Does it meet the specs for Lion?
    Are your third apps compatible?
I'd also be sure to have at least 4GB RAM and 10-15% free space on your HDD.

Start with a ZDC report on all of your Servers.
The ZDC Tool can be found on Patchfinder with the other patches.
This can help identify issues such as missing or incorrect files.

  • Gencon causes erratic performance on SMP linux server

    -----Problems:
    1. Erratic performance.
    2. GC logs show only half of the GC pause times.
    -----Symptoms:
Long pause(s) in application response time. GC log output shows GC collections lasting about half the duration of the application pause. Our testing resulted in pauses which lasted up to 90 seconds during which few or no transactions were processed by the workload.
    -----Cause:
Gencon apparently does not work well on an MP Linux system
    -----Workaround:
Use the parallel gc option on MP systems.
    -----System Specs:
    Red Hat 3.1 AS
    Xeon MP (quad)
    Standalone java application on JRockit.
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-b05)
BEA WebLogic JRockit(TM) 1.4.2_04 JVM (build ari-31788-20040616-1032-linux-ia32, Native Threads,

    David,
Thank you for your response. I believe the pauses are GC related, though.
The application is multithreaded and can be run in multiple instances as well. This behavior effects one entire process. That is, all threads in one process stop producing for several seconds (up to 90 as I mentioned in my original post). Other instances of the application on the same server continue to function normally.
If the GC option is changed to parallel then this pause behavior does not occur. Changing the GC option was made in lab conditions and was the only change made. Reverting to gencon, of course, reliably reproduces the problem.
Additionally the timing of the longest GC pause in the GC log correlates with the timing of the transactional drop in the application's log. Again, as I mentioned in the first post, the time of the GC pause is half of the time of the unresponsive period in the application. Therefore, even if the application is causing half of the delay, a 45 second GC pause for a 1.5 GB heap is cause for review.
Thank you again for your attention to this matter,
    Dan

  • Slow login and grey wallpaper?

    All,
I have a 4 day old Macbook Pro Retina base config. I haven't had the need to reboot my machine since i first turned it on and maybe updating to the latest update. Last night I decided to shut down rather than put it to sleep.
Today (fourth day) I turned it on, booted up fine, and when I logged in, I noticed it took like 5-7 seconds before it went to my desktop, at one point I thought it froze.
Later on, i was messing with time machine, my external hd, itunes, caffeine, and the menu bar turned black, so I though to reboot the machine.
After the reboot, I logged in, and notice the slow login again, and this time, the wallpaper i set up was gone and was replaced with a grey wallpaper.
I searched a bit and notice a few people have had issues like this with Lion.
Was wondering if there is a solution to this?
    Thanks!

Delays and related can be caused by DNS errors, and by network errors.
OS X Server is dependent on correctly-configured DNS services.
To verify DNS, launch Terminal.app from the Applications > Utilities folder on the server, and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
That command won't make any changes, but will report whether your host name and your DNS are correct on your server.  You'll get some output and a message that no changes are required, or some output and a message indicating something about whatever error was detected.
