Mavericks - So Slow and Troublesome.

I have clean installed Mavericks twice but still much of the time my Macbook is unresponsive and very frustrating to use.
It was fine on the intial Mavericks instal but over the last month or two I have been having more and more problems.
Problems include
browser windows (Firefox and Chrome) take forever to load,
right clicking in any app often results in the beach ball for 30seconds or more before the dialog box opens
most apps take forever to load,
beach balling at length in any app,
long wait usually for cursor to appear in any app or website text box
Dock set to hide/show - it quite often doesn't show when cursor moved to edge of screen
Four finger swipe up to activate Mission Control doesn't work sometimes
Four finger swipe to move between desktops doesn't work sometimes
Hot corners stop working at times
Long delays between typing and letters appearing on screen sometimes
Quicklook very slow whether trying to view docs in Finder, Mail, Desktop
I could go on, just about everything I try and do on the computer in every app very often causes delays, beachballing and freezes.
Even on cool days the fan is running high 4000rpm or more, I hardly ever used to hear the fan except hot days/working the machine hard.
Quite often first thing in the morning after it has been asleep overnight the Macbook is almost totally frozen for a couple of minutes before it 'wakes' up and it useable. It quite often needs a restart or crash shut down/restart to get it going.
I have lost count now of the number of times I have had to crash shut down by holding the power key when the computer just becomes inoperable or incredibly slow.
I installed a new hard drive a couple of years ago which was larger and had a higher rpm than the original.
I would really appreciate some help or tips to ascertain what is wrong.
Thanks
Tim

Seems I can go up to 8gbRAM but this seems not to be problem.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks extremely slow and hangs

I upgraded to Mavericks and bought iPhoto 9.5.1 upgrade from the app store. Now, iPhoto is extremely slow in loading thumbnails. Once it loads a page or two, then it is fast to scroll the thumbnails it has already loaded, but as you go further back in time, it needs to load all the thumbnails. It eventually hangs. When I reboot the application, it doesn't remember the previous thumbnails and is again extremely slow. This version is way to slow to use and is actually unusable. It also doesn't show any faces in the face collection frames, and when you click on them, it opens up blank outlines, then when you click on these, it brings up the original photo with all the faces named. So the faces feature has major issues as well.
I never had any problem with the previous version of iPhoto. I am using a mid-2010 macbook pro with 8 g of ram. Anyone else have this problem and is Apple aware of the problems with this version?
    Thanks.

Where is your iPhoto Library stored? Have you tried rebuilding the Library?

  • Mavericks Running Slow and Hanging Hourly

As the title describes, my mac has slowed down since the installation of Mavericks and every hour it hangs for a minumum of 3-12 minutes. Typically, on average, it hangs about 6-10 minutes to be more precise. It didn't hang like this pre-Mavericks so I am looking for any help and insight anyone can provide as I am encountering between 6-10 hours of lost work time weekly as I wait for the hang to complete.

  • Mavericks is slow and nothing works properly now.  How do I go back to Mountain Lion?

I have an older iMac (purchased in the Spring of 2008).  I've updated the operating systems as new ones have come available and even installed more memory into the machine so the upgrades would continue to work.  With the latest upgrade to Mavericks I'm ready to go backwards.  Mavericks stinks.  Everything runs slowly, I get the "beach ball" all the time, and I'm constantly getting error messages.  I'm thinking maybe I just don't have enough memory to make this work properly.
So I want to go back to Mountain Lion (which I paid for) but can't find it in my "purchased items" in the App Store and can't seem to figure it out anywhere else.  I have a backup hard drive but I haven't backed up in a LONG time so I don't want to go that route.  I'd rather just do it online.  Can anyone help?  (I'm not very tech savvy, so please keep it simple...)

You can check to see if the Mountain Lion purchase was hidden.

If that doesn't work, try contacting App Store support.

  • HT5785 Why is Safari slow and troublesome?

Safari is either slow or it stops working. This after updating. Why?
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

    Practically:
The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely
    Core

... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • IMac running slow and frequently crashing since installing Mavericks. Any useful info in this log?

Since installing Mavericks some time ago, applications have become slow to open, proccesses have slowed and, well, eveything has slowed down some. Also, almost every day, sometimes more than once, the iMac will freeze for a second, then reboot itself. I've tried searching for similar posts but haven't found an answer yet. I did open the console (which, I confess, I don't understand) and I'm getting lots of messages. But, as I've never checked before, I have no idea whether any of them are normal. Thanks in advance for anyone's insight!

Ok, so I think I got rid of everything you suggested, Arthur. No real improvement in speed, but the computer's four and a half years old, so...  I should just be satisfied if it doesn't crash every day. That would be an improvement. I'll have to wait a few days to see. I've run Etrecheck again just incase you see something else that might help. Thanks.

  • Slow and crashing since mavericks update and instal of Parallels

I recently upgraded my mac book pro to mavericks and also installed Paralles with Windows 8.1. My laptop is now extermly slow and often crashes with the multi coloured loading wheel never ending. I end up having to sometimes restart the mac with power button.
The laptop is now nearly 4 years old and has had heavy use. My feeling is that I need to back up all my files, format it and start again.
Could someone let me know if this will help and if so how to do it?
Do I need the orginal disc that came with the laptop?
Would I lose all programs installed on the machine?
    Thanks, Tom

    Tom,
it might be less effort to identify the source of the slowdown than to do a clean reïnstallation. Which model MacBook Pro do you have, how much RAM does it have, what capacity internal disk does it have, and how much free space is on it?
(If your MacBook Pro originally came with two grey installation DVDs in the box, then yes, you’ll need them to do a clean reïnstallation. A clean reïnstallation starts from an erased internal disk, so you’d also need to reïnstall your currently installed programs.)

  • Lightroom 5 (5.1, 5.2 and now 5.3RC) SLOW and unresponsive on Mavericks

Hello! I am having issues using Lightroom 5 (from first rel to 5.3RC). In the specificity it is rather slow and unresponsive. As soon as I edit something I get spinning wheel, sometimes editings work immediatly other times it is very laggish.
I have a late 2008 2.4ghz Macbook pro, 8gb ram, OWC SSD (with both application, catalogue, files and previews on). I edit 16mp raw files copied as DNG. Did not have problems with lightroom 4. Camera raw cache is set to 20gb on the SSD. Catalogue is very small (less than 500 pictures), as I use it only for editing and then I export and archive the JPGs separately. I have to say that perormance decreased after updating to Mavericks but it was not particularly good with Mountain Lion either.
I tried all the usual things (flushing caches, rebuilding previews, starting new catalogue, etc.) but to no avail. It looks like Lightroom 5 actually works rather worse than 4 performance wise, and that Mavericks does not help. Anyone with the same problems? Does anybody have suggestions on how to improve it?
    Many thanks!

    So no clues whatsoever?
I have now worked quite a lot with the 5.3RC on Mavericks and I noticed that the main problem is the library module. As soon as I enter the develop module all is fine and it works pretty well. Editing is snappy and so forth. The library module is really laggish. Every two or three pictures that I only look at I get the spinning wheel, when I delete a file, spinning wheel, when I double click to enlarge a file, spinning wheel. I work with raw files converted to DNG, but I get the same problem with unconverted JPGS. The weird thing it that since I updated to Mavericks the whole JPG handling gives spinning wheels, i.e. when I Quicklook a JPG from Finder I have to wait a bit for it to load. Does anybody share my experience?

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks
    Al Florez

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

Mavericks has slowed my IMAC to a crawl. Applications are slow to open. Disc burning is slow as well as photo editing. Any Idea's

We need more info about your iMac other than "My iMac is running slow."
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
To find out info about your system, click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears. Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.   Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs. Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Conpletely uninstall any virus software you have installed following the anti-virus deveolper's instructions.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Another her possibilty is that some hardware, like your iMac's hard drive, could be failing.

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • Why is the Magic Mouse slow and impressive on Mavericks?

After upgrade to Mavericks, the Magic Mouse become slow and Impressive. This doens,t happened on Mountain Lion.
I did a clean installation and the batery of Magic Mouse is full!

Did you post from the system that has the problem? (Your "More System Details" list shows Flash 11.7 instead of 11.8 for some reason.)
This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with Flash in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:
    (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
    (2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash ''(I see from your post that you've done this part)''
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
    (3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

  • Since adding over 600 tags my computer is slow and Mail shows wrong emails in previously working intelligent folders... What to do?

    Hi,
this is my situation: I have a MacBook Pro 15'' with 2,8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running on Mavericks. The transition to Mavericks a week ago was smooth, and I was happy to find out that my many OpenMeta tags (I've been tagging my files for over 7 years now) were easily converted into Mavericks tags using Leap (Ironic Software). I did notice, though, that even though Mavericks recognized all my existing tags, only those that I had entered "per hand" in Mavericks, were candidates for auto-completion in the entering/tagging process, while the others needed to be written out completely if I wanted to use them on a new file. So after a while I decided to look for a solution (I didn't want to risk creating similar tags to some already existing) and I had the idea to copy all my existing tags in one go from the Tags Window in Leap (685 in total) and paste them into the Mavericks tag window for one experimental file.
It worked. Now all my tags are shown in the Mavericks tags list and are auto-completed when prompted.
BUT since then my computer has been acting strange:
    It has slowed down somewhat.
When I try to scroll down the complete list of my tags in the Mavericks tagging window Finder crashes.
And my intelligent mailboxes in Mail are now buggy. For ex. an intelligent folder programmed to show me all emails received today, will now show all of today's emails plus about 20 others from years past (dating as far back as 2009) many of them with "empty" senders, recipients and subject lines.
I have to add that all of this happened a few hours ago and that it seems as if the contents of the intelligent folders are getting updated as I write (but not necessarily in a good way)... Does that mean that my mac is rebuilding some indexes somewhere or anything of that kind?
So should I just wait and hope things will get better? Or is there anything I can do to correct the problems?
    Thanks in advance.

No problem with versions not matching.
In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail and find one account folder (will begin with POP if POP account, etc). Open the account folder and locate the INBOX.mbox folder (or INBOX.imapmbox if using IMAP), and then tell me if there is a Messages folder within, and if so open that and observe the number of files it contains?
    Ernie
