Mavericks - sound problems in QuickTime

After installing the OSX Mavericks when watching video in the player is dealt crackling noise. In the other players and in Preview the sound is normal. My devices: iMac (in late 2012) 2,9 GHz Intel Core i5, 8Gb 1600 MHz DDR3, soundcard (Firewire-Thunderbolt) Focusrite Saffire 24DSP Pro.

I’m not sure I had precisely the same problem, but it sounds very similar.
My system: Mac Mini (late 2009), 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Immediately after upgrading my Snow Leopard (10.6.8) system to Mavericks (10.9.4), any QuickTime movie or MPEG-4 file I played with QuickTime Player 10.3 manifested a series of ticks or clicks at a constant interval of approximately a second. The quieter the audio track, the more obvious the clicks; and even when louder tracks rendered them more subtle by comparison, they still became intolerable over time.
This problem did not occur when the same files were played in either VLC 2.1.5 or QuickTime Player 7 Pro 7.6.6. Playing DVDs with DVD Player 5.7 did not manifest the problem, either, and neither did playing music, QuickTime movies, or MPEG-4 files in iTunes 11.3.1.
I looked around this afternoon here at Apple Support Communities to see what I could find. In a thread entitled “quicktime sound crackling,” Ernst Samuel Svendsen suggested, in response to a gentleman having a similar problem, changing the sound card’s sample rate.
My headphones (which I use for all but the most casual, trivial listening on my Mac) are a set of Plantronics DSP 500s that are just about ten years old now and still serving me well. They have their own built-in sound card and connect through a USB port and not the headphone jack which feeds my display’s speakers. It occurred to me that it was only through the DSP 500s that I detected the problem.
Mr. Svendsen had given me an idea. I called up Audio MIDI Setup and started poking around. I noticed that the settings for Built-in Output defaulted to 44100.0 Hz while the settings for Plantronics Headset defaulted to 16000.0 Hz. I changed the Plantronics settings to 44100.0 Hz and the problem vanished.
I don’t know whether or not these details are relevant to your particular setup, but something similar might be worth a shot. Good luck.

  • Sound problem with QuickTime .dv files exported from iMovie ~ help please

    Hi
I have been working for ages on an important project which is intended to wind-up as a numbered edition DVD, limited to 50 copies.
When I worked in iMovie HD 5 this NEW PROBLEM didn't arise: I did what I thought was the right thing and bought iLife '06, then upgraded from the Apple site, so now I am using iMovie HD 6.0.1, iDVD 6.0.1 and QuickTime Player 7.0.4.
I've designed my own menus and the procedure as most anyone will know [thanks iCreate magazine!] is...you have to 'export' (or now 'share') the iMovie to QuickTime (or with QuickTime) which produces a .dv file which you then drag-and-drop into iDVD.
I've got 4 of these .dv files for the start-up and some menus.
THE PROBLEM IS whereas the sound (it's actually music) has been faded out (in synch with the image) ~ in iMovie everything seems fine ~ but THE QUICKTIME .dv FILES HAVE AN ANNOYING LITTLE "FLARE-UP" OF MUSIC AT THE END OF THEM.
Imported into iDVD, in preview: sure enough! ~ you hear the annoying, untidy-sounding snips at the end.
It's ruining my project ~ please help, someone!

I am having the exact problem, it's a real show stopper.
I have tested hardware, software, media as below.
    Tested on
    1 Intel 17inch iMac
    2 G4 AGP 450 + 1.2Ghz Model
Each have a fresh install of iLife 06 on
Each have been tested with different project files.
    Differnet music files
The issue seems to be with apples iLife software to me.
I am on the phone to apple right now, they only surgest I create a new user as it generates new prefs, but the above test has already rulled out preference files!
Also rebuilding and reinstalling, but again the above test has rulled that out as the 3 machines were freshly built.
I have already upgraded my graphics card in my machine at home to sort out preview problems with iMovie, hopefully it's not going to be an expensive audio card aswell.
If any 1 can throw any light on this please do as apple support can't.
    Regards
    Paul

  • Sound problems after upgrading to 7.1 and Pro

I have recently upgraded to Quicktime Pro and installed the 7.1 update, to create Podcasts at work. The only problem is now that non of my quicktimes will play sound. I have checked all volume control sections and mutes etc, its definitely a problem with the software. Also once a movie plays through, or if I try and use the play controls, other than initially pressing play, the player crashes and have to go to task manager to close it properly. The same occurs when you try and close the program.
I was going to uninstall and try again, but I was worried this might cause problems with the Quicktime Pro info.
Anyone else had these problems or have any advice.

I'm also having sound problems with Quicktime v7.1 Pro. If I play a .swf file in Quicktime, the video and audio play great. If I play an .avi file, the video plays but there is no sound. If I play a .mov created by Camtasia Studio using either the default compression or the H.264 compression format, the video plays but there is no sound. The graphic display indicates that the audio is present in all cases.
Is there an issue with this new version of Quicktime Pro v7.1?

  • Cinema display sound problem after Mavericks update

Since I updated to Mavericks, sound only comes from my laptop speakers, instead of from my LED Cinema display's speakers. And when I look at Sound in Preferences, there is no longer the option to change the sound source. Anyone come across this and know how to fix it? Thanks.

    Hey there Kravmafan,
It sounds like you are not getting the sound options you are expecting when using a cinema display. I would suggest using these troubleshooting steps from the following article, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Desperately need some help!! iTunes/Quicktime/iChat/Sound problems....

So, yesterday, I was online, on google video, and when I pressed play on the video, there was no sound, but the video worked...the same was true on every video site i checked. My computer volume was at max, and I even tested the speakers to make sure they were on, and they indeed were.
I thought that was odd...but then the problems really started.....
After that, I clicked on my iChat icon. It bounced once, and did not open. The same thing happened when I clicked on iTunes. 1 bounce, and then nothing. I checked to make sure all of my iTunes mp3 files were on my computer....they indeed are all still here, bit nothing I can do opens iTunes. I've run disc utilities, and disc repair...according to that, everything is peachy-keen on my computer.....but iChat and iTunes STILL will not open, and there is still no sound on anything.
Now, i'm leaning towards the archive and install option....or even just backing up what I want to save, wiping the drive, and starting from scratch.....but i'd really like to not have that happen.
(and, as a side question, if all I want to save are images, several documents, and many mp3 files, would everything be okay if I just backed them up on an external drive, and then loaded them back on to my computer after reinstalling OS X?)
Sorry about the length of this, but I am at my wit's end, and I have no idea what to do.

by third-party, do you mean things I installed that are not manufactured by mac? If that is the case, I have microsoft office, Smart Music, Flip4mac, and Senuti.
I got rid of Flip4Mac to see if that affected my sound problems, but it did not. So, as of now, my problem remains the same...

  • Sound problems ("clicking"/"echo") in iTunes+Quicktime

    Hi!
I have recently installed iTunes on my windows xp PC. I have a fast PC, fast internet connection and a good soundcard. All the other musicprograms on my PC sound good (winamp/ musicmatch/ windows mediaplayer). When I play my songs on the iTunes player, there is a clicking-sound on top of the music, and it sounds almost like its played in a metalbox or something (an echo-feeling). I have also experienced this when I play some quicktime movies. It happens both when I stream tracks and when I play songs from my library.
I guess it is something in the sound preferences in quicktime/itunes that I haven't done right, but I can't find out where I have gone wrong.
    Please help me!
    Thanks!
    Knut B.

You need to goto, in windows, control panel>quicktime>audio tab and see if "Safemode" is checked. If not check it hit OK and reboot the PC for the settings to take

  • Problem with QuickTime Movies From iMovie HD

I posted this earlier (on the second day of Leopard's Release), and did not get much feedback, and so thought I'd try again after people have had time to run Leopard.
I have some movies that I created using iMovie HD. I have the QuickTime version of the movie for use with Front Row.
On my G5 iMac running Leopard, the quality of the movies on Front Row is fine. However, in Leopard, the quality is lousy. The movies were made from still photos, using the Ken Burns effect. There are also transitions. On the web, on my iWeb site, the pictures take a while to come into focus. I sort of expect this on the web. However, I've found the same thing with the movie files using Front Row on Leopard. Again, this slowness in coming into focus does not appear when playing the movie on Front Row on Tiger on a G5 iMac.
Curious if anyone else has encountered problems/issues with QuickTime movies files from iMovie HD. And if so, what if any fixes are available.
    Thanks in advance.
    Russell

Hmmmm, so it works OK in Front Row but NOT in Quicktime player? Thats odd. Front Row works worse for me!
It sounds like it may be a rendering problem with Quicktime - It has to process the file in general (or parts of the file, for example, if you export 10 pics looped in Flash, it has to process the 10 image files each time it plays it through, resulting in the first 4 or 5 images to shoot out jerkily [read LAG] unlike the rest of the movie, which is smooth). If these images in your movie are large in file size or contain tons of wacky photoshopped effects, etc, that might be whats causing the problem.
I'd check everything is updated to the latest version, repair permissions on the disk in Disk Utility, and then see if anythings improved.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Sound Problems Playing Video's in iTunes

When i play videos (either ripped or bought from the iTunes store) in iTunes the sound is all broken up and clipped. However they play fine on the Vieo iPod my PC is sync'd to and, critically, iTunes audio files play fine on both PC and iPod. Any ideas? Settings for sound seem fine. I've even upgraded the memory on my Vaio to 1Gbyte in case it was that but nope

Should have said if I start quicktime seperately from iTunes and play a video stream from its website the sound is fine, however, if I open an Mpeg4 iTunes video file the sound problem occurs just like when i play a video in iTunes from the store or an Mpeg4 file from the hard drive that I've bought from the store or ripped from DVD

  • Lots of problems with Quicktime 7.1.3

There is a lot of problems with Quicktime 7.1.3, for starters when you install it, the shorcuts on the start menu doesn't show the right icon, instead they show the icon like if the path to the desired icon is wrong, and not matter how much you use the repair function on the installer it remains the same.
The plug-in for the internet browser doesn't works neither, you only get the "Plug-in error. The plug-in did not initialise properly" error message.
And what's with the Question mark on every single trailer on this site? it seems they have problems with the mov files on the server or something, like if they aren't complete, kinda odd considering that the HD trailers did open without problem but those ones open a player window since they are too big for a plug-in browser window.
Apple has a lot of work to do for the next version of Quicktime since this one came with a big load of errors, I had to return to the version 7.1 while all this problems get fixed.

from day one i haven't had a problem with installation nor with playback. originally the surround sound didn't work, that was fixed...now however with the recent version the h.264 encoding has downgraded.
the only thing i did different on installation was getting the standalone and not the itunes addition. i didn't uninstall the old one nor did i dig through the registry and mess with the keys. all i did was install and i presume it removed the older installation which is fine because obviously it worked.
why you all are having problems i have no idea. i just want my h.264 encoding quality restored back to the way it was.

  • Video sound problem

My music on iTunes plays perfectly but I have bought 2 videos from the music store and downloaded a few podcasts and the sound stutters really badly as if two different soundcards were trying to play the audio at the same time -needless to say I only have one soundcard installed. If I open QuickTime and play the videos in there directly they sound fine so the problem must be with iTunes itself. I am using iTunes 6 and the latest version of QT. I have tried all of the QT settings trouble-shooting suggestions on the support pages. I have got the most recent driver for my soundcard, I have the most recent version of DirectX and I have even tried changing my soundcard but the problem remains the same. Has anyone any idea what the problem is?

I am a new owner of iPod video and have used Videora. Tried several times and it is successful. For sound problems, I suggest you to look at 2 dimensions as well.
    1. On the "setup" menu (right below "Convert"), there is a sound volumn for you to adjust. I found that I have to adjust it to at least 225% to make it audible thru my headphones.
    2. For some DVD, there are multiple sound tracks of different languages, DVD Decruptor allows you to choose the subtitles and the language. Only click those that you want.
    Good luck!

  • Intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since 10.9.1 upgrade.

My 27" iMac (mid-2011, 2.7 i5, 16g RAM) has had intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since I upgraded to 10.9.1.  I've reset the PRAM, used Disk Utility on the file permissions, tried Audio Midi, and sound prefs steadfastly refuses to use the internal speakers.

Did you install the latest driver set for the device?  there is a new release on motu.com for mavericks.

  • Output Sound Problem

Has anyone noticed that output sound on the itunes is distorted and after opening and playing the same file in QuickTime that the problem is gone?
I am using iTunes to open and play a sound file, say an imported CD song, and the sound is distorted.
Checking the preferences option to perform a Sound Check helps but does not completely solve the problem. After opening Quicktime and opening the same file, the output sound is fine, in both applications?
It seems that all was well before my update of the applications and the Firmware. Should I be suspicious of that as the culprit or is this some other symtom of impending doom?
The sound problem is on internal speakers, earbuds, or a set of sennheiser headphones.

I might have the same problem. Playing audio occasionally becomes very scratchy, to the point that I have to stop listening. It usually lasts a few minutes. It's maddening.
It happens via the internal speakers or through headphones.
Occurrence isn't very consistent. I notice it most in iTunes (v7), but that's probably only because I play most audio in iTunes. I've had it happen now when playing video in VLC, too. It seems to only happen after playing audio continuously for at least 10 minutes. I haven't been able to reproduce it at will, so I haven't bothered taking it to my local Genius bar yet (at least not for this problem).

What sound problem - no sound on anything, no sound on some apps ?
Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
