Mavericks stalls during large downloads

Hi I'm at my wits end over this, so hoping someone can help. I upgraded to Mavericks not long ago and I think that's when this problem started, but I'm not absolutely sure.
Anyway, the problem is that when I try to download anything bigger than a few MB, the download stalls part of the way through and never starts up again. This affects files downloaded through a browser, YouTube videos, email fetched via POP, even files copied in with scp (copying out with scp seems to work fine). Activity Monitor shows the data received rate suddenly dropping to more or less zero. I don't see anything relevant happening on the console while this happens.
I don't think this is an issue with our ISP, wireless connection, etc., because my wife's PC is not having this problem.
Based on suggestions I've seen in response to similar problems, I've tried removing Sophos and also, even though it makes no sense, implementing the ARP workaround mentioned in response #6 here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1689575
No luck with either of those.
I also tried rebooting in safe mode, but that makes no difference.
I'm using a Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I'm having this problem as well. While this is only a partial and temporary fix, if you're downloading from the web, I was just able to download an 869MB file from the web by doing this:
- Start the download in Firefox
- Open the Downloads window (Cmd + J)
- When the download stalls, right-click the DL and select "Pause"
- Let it sit for a few minutes, do something else
- Come back to Firefox, right-click the DL item and select Resume
I did this and was able to download the file completely. Going to try for a file now that's over 1GB!

Restart and try again at a different time (tomorrow).

  • Why do I get a kernel panic during large downloads?

Since I got my new MacBook Pro, it's been doing kernel panics during large file downloads.
Getting rid of Chrome seemed to help but today the panics are back.  I just started up in Safe Boot mode and the downloads (two files, approx. 500 and 300 MB, respectively) completed downloading without incident.
While I'm checking out my startup items, has anyone else seen this problem?  I didn't have this problem with my Core 2 Duo.

I took a look at the dump and saw a reference to an Elmedia Player kext.  I remembered that in another thread someone mentioned this giving some trouble, I uninstalled it.  I'll keep an eye on it to see if the problem comes back.

  • ITunes locks PC during large downloads

This started happening about a month ago and there have been no major changes to my system (I've had this system for over a year).
PC running Windows Home 7 Premium 64 bit with SP1 and all available Microsoft updates installed.  iTunes is version 10.6.1
The sytem locks during downloads - usually they need to be large such a video podcasts and now a movie.  Downloads start and proceed at high speed to a point and then progress on the download stops and the indication of remaining time starts to go up.  For example, I was trying to download a 383MB video podcast and it flew along up to 62.1MB and showed 2 minutes remaining to complete in the status.  Then it went to 3, 4, etc.  After 2 minutes elapsed time, it was 7 minutes and after 20 minutes it was 2 hours. However, the indication of estimated completion time is the only thing on the system that is active.  The clock in the system tray stops almost immediately after the download progress stops nothing else is accessible - even Ctrl Alt Del and Ctrl Shift Esc do nothing,  The only thing I can do is physically power off and them it takes over 20 minutes to get back into iTunes as I have a large library (over 24000 songs and about 30 movies).
This has happen consistently in several locations with high-speed internet and I've tried turning off wifi and going hard wire.  Yesterday, I got a movie and the download to Flixster went fine and the iTunes download locked up.  I have removed and reinstalled iTunes and deleted the content in the download directory.  Also have unsubscribed and resubscribed to podcasts. Ideas on next steps would be appreciated.

Additional info - after 6 iterations of donwload/lock/reboot, I did successfully get the movie I bought (2.25GB of content) and it does play.

  • IPad (3rd gen) losing wifi connection during large downloads

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my iPad 3rd generation (wifi only, 64GB) running iOS 6.1.3.
When I download large files (e.g. via the iTunes app, the BBC iPlayer app, The Economist app), my iPad almost always loses wifi connection a minute or two into the download, and often stays disconnected until I go into Settings > Wifi and select my home network again. If I resume the download in relevant application, the same issue will typically recur within a minute or two.
I am not having any other problems with this iPad - general internet browsing / streaming of video has been fine. I originally thought the issue was only with the BBC iPlayer app, but sadly have found it to be more widespread.
I have tried to "forget this network", resetting network settings, restoring my entire iPad (twice), and resetting all settings - none of these have stopped the issue. Interestingly, during the first restore of the iPad I received ugly BIOS-esque messages relating to AppleBCMWLANCore, which disappeared after a hard reboot (power + home buttons together), and did not recur on the 2nd restore.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? Any suggestions to fix this?
    Cheers,
    James

Locate the iPad as close as possible  to your router.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Mail hang during large message download

I've noticed several times when I get emails that either exceed the auto download size threshold, or have large attachments on them that Mail will 'hang' during the download. I can exit out of the message but it's still spinning away and won't get any more email from the server.
I'm using a Pop email account. The only fix I've found is to "magic power cycle" the mail app using the sleep button / home key hold down. Once mail starts after this the message will fully download. It's been happening for a while, but I wanted to be sure it wasn't a fluke.
Anyone else run across this & find an easier workaround?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I have been having no end of problems with email since upgrading to 10.5 about a month ago.
Generally, after some time, various activities hang around in the Activity window (such as "evaluating message n of m") and prevent normal email updates and quitting. Neither Apple support nor the local Apple Genius were able to assist. Even reinstalling the OS (10.5.2, 10.5.3, or 10.5.4) and rebuilding the user account manually did not work. I tried running "Sample Process" in Activity Monitor on Mail.app and noticed a lot of "semaphorewait_signaltrap"s that seemed to be related to AddressBook. This led me to the following process which has (at least for now) fixed my problem:
    1. Quit (or Force Quit) Mail.

  • Re: Genieo removal after Maverick exception during download 5/24

During my download of Maverick yesterday, the only exception was a pop-up that indicated Genieo was not acceptable and that it had been put in a file (of course I don't recall the exact words).  I later saw it with my other apps with the Genieo icon, a gray disc upon it and the word "uninstall" underneath the icon.  After reading "The Smart Mac" Thomas Reed's article and dire warnings if one doesn't follow the 6 steps exactly, I am afraid to proceed as I am quite the novice.  Since the app has that indication, would it be OK to just leave it there as such - or if I should uninstall - does its present status indicate a simpler approach to un-installation?

I suspect you are referring to Thomas Reed's "TheSafeMac" site and I understand your reluctance, but you must have overlooked his recommendation to use the Adware Removal Tool he recently wrote which automates those steps, avoids the need for you to follow six steps exactly and basically makes it a no-brainer.
I hadn't realized that Apple had added Genieo to it's list of Incompatible software, but moving the application probably didn't get rid of the other files / processes that may cause your computer to run slower and display unwanted advertising.
Do not run the Genieo provided "Uninstaller"! Not only does it do an incomplete job, it actually installs additional files which makes it's presence less obvious.

Mavircks 10.9.1 keeps erring during the download and will not complete.  What do I do?

Get the official version of Firefox here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
As long as you '''''don't''''' select the option to '''Remove Firefox personal data and customizations''' when you un-install that "Yahoo version", you won't lose anything.

  • My apple tv stalls during playback. How can I fix this?

My Apple TV stalls during playback. I am hooked up through ethernet so I'm certain that it is not a network issue. What happens is that after a few minutes of normal playback the movie that I'm watching simply stalls. It looks like AppleTV is trying to reboot it. if I rewind it briefly and restart the movie by pushing play it seems to be fine. But it it stalls again after a few minutes. I have to do this very often and it becomes quite distracting when you're trying to watch a show.
One thing I have noticed is that if I pause the program before it stalls and leave it for about 15 minutes I can watch a large portion of the show uninterrupted.
The files are in my iTunes library. I don't seem to have this issue if I'm playing the files from my iPad via AirPlay. I have restarted, reset, and rebooted AppleTV several times and it still keeps doing it. Any suggestions out there?

    640 x 480
    Widescreen 16:9
These settings are contradictory. Please post a screen capture image of the QT "Inspector" window to confirm what encode matrix setting, PAR display setting, and Scale display settings are actually embedded in your file. Also please confirm whether or not the source material was widescreen and it is 4:3 aspect you wish to correct at this point. If not, then please state the height at which the transcoded file was encoded and the target aspect ratio at which you want files to play in all media players.
Once compressed it plays back in Windows Media Player as 16:9 video.
When played back with Quicktime it is squished into a 4:3 format.
Different players dispay content aspect differently.
Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
QT 7, for instance, displays the file using specific Scale dimensions and if these dimensions are not equivalent to PAR/anamorphic playback settings, then the file can display differently in differently media players. As to fixing the problem, that depends on which setting you are trying to fix and what platform/software is available.

I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for my iMac (Mavericks 10.9.4), downloaded it and have attempted to install it 10 or more times. I have done all the usual maintenance steps (repair permissions, repair disk, etc) and it still won't install. All goes well until the installer gets to "Running Package Scripts" then it stalls or hangs up and does not finish the installation. It runs and runs and runs. It never finishes. I wind up having to force quit the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi jtento ,
Kindly enable the Root Account for the MAC and then try the installation there (in the root account). Please find below the URL to enable the root account.

  • Time Capsule internet stall during backups

Just started to happen recently but it looks like everytime the backup starts, my internet connection begins to stall. As soon as the backup is complete, my internet is working again. It's not like the backups are large sizes, not sure what's going on. The TC had been working great for the past 6 months and this just started to happen the last couple weeks. Other than no internet during backups, it works well. Any ideas?

I am running it via wireless. Typically the RSSI is around 70, this last time when the internet stalled during backup the RSSI was down in the 54 range. I know there have been backups hourly or so but when my internet stalled just a few minutes ago, it was the first time since I posted the first msg in this thread. I still haven't figured out anything common for when it does stall during backups.
You'll notice that the value for RSSI is a negative number, so the larger the absolute value, the worse the connection. I also see an RSSI value of -70. My wireless network performance is so poor at that value that I use an Ethernet connection instead.
Even if the noise on your link is as low as -90, that only gives you a signal-to-noise ratio of 20 (-70 minus -90), which according to the second message of this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10329543
qualifies as a "low signal". If the noise on your link is higher (a smaller absolute value), then the SNR value will be worse and your throughput will suffer accordingly.

  • HT4623 When will mavericks be available to download?

When will Mavericks be available to download in Canada?

Yes, I _am_ able to log into your Apple account from my iMac _&_ I entered both my credit card number & the CVV number Correctly.  And I _try_ to get Mavericks from the Mac App Store, itself.
Even though Mavericks is free after I enter data from my credit card, I see this:
[Large App Store icon here, aside]  Your request is Temporarily unable to be processed.  [I _love_ that passive voice.]  Please try again later [ & later & Later & Later.  :-( ]
    I suppose that I need to use Mac OS X v10.8.5 even-longer, Happily-so!  :-)

  • Firefox aborts LARGE downloads on completion with an 'unknown error' and the whole file has to be downloaded again - surely there must be a workfile somewhere?

Because I only have satellite internet available to me, I have to download YouTube files in my download window. Several times now, one or two of maybe five or six files, all being downloaded simultaneously *to the same directory*, will abort with an error message "<filename> could not be saved because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location". However, you don't get a chance to save it to a different location, the whole damned file has to be downloaded again from scratch. This is actually with IceWeasel 17.0.10, a thinly-disgusided version of Firefox 17 LTS, running on 64-bit Debian 7.1 multihome.
I realise this may be a plugin problem rather than a Firefox problem, I'm not sure of the exact relationship between the two, but I'm using TubeEnhancer 2.6 to do the downloads.
Whatever the 'unknown error' might be (and it's not a permissions problem, other videos being downloaded at the same time will save correctly to the same directory!) it seems beyond belief that it's not possible to give the user a chance to save the file somewhere else, as the error message suggests. It's so frustrsting to have to go through the whole download process again. Surely Firefox is storing a copy of the file on the hard drive as it downloads, is there really no way that this can at least be recovered when the error occurs, even if it's not possible for some reason to give the user a second chance to pick a directory and filename?

OK, so I tried disabling the other addons and (I'm sure this is coincidental!) the problem actually got WORSE, not better, i.e. more aborted downloads.
This is a long-standing problem with both Firefox and Thunderbird, both programs will happily tell you *during* the download process that they've downloaded X MB of Y MB, but if the download aborts, then there's no indication that it's done so on the dowload page. All that is needed is to retain that expected download size figure when the download has terminated, so that you can easily see whether unattended downloads completed or not.
Yes, I suppose those of us who have to use satellite internet services are in the minority, but the only hours when I can download anything are between 0200 and 0700 my time, and I do like to get SOME sleep at nights!

  • My Apple TV stalled during an update and now just shows an image of it being plugged into a USB. It won't complete the update and does nothing when I plug it into my Mac via USB.

2 Apple TVs. The first won't reboot, it stalled during an update and now shows a picture of a UBS plug. Ive tried to plug into my computer, nothing happens. At a standtill.
The second Apple TV works but only if I send something via Airplay. The remote no longer has any affect. The light on the front of the Apple TV blinks when I push a buttom on the remote but nothing happens.
Any Ideas? I am starting to think I need to replace them. Thanks.

Ok, with itunes open on the pc, plug one end of the usb cord into the computer, but not connected to the ipad.
now, press the power button on the ipad until it turns off.
Then, press and hold the home button on the ipad at the same you plug the usb cord into the ipad. DON'T LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON.
Keep holding the home button until you see the recovery mode message pop on the itunes window.
When that happens, you should now be able to restore.
