Mavericks Takes 4-5 Minutes to Boot

I recently reinstalled Mavericks on my iMac and transferred my settings/datas from a Time Machine backup. Everything seems to run just fine, but it takes 4-5 minutes to boot. I thought it could have something to do with permissions and ACLs since I also changed my home folder name. After following step 1 provided here http://discussions.apple.com/thread/5275515?tstart=0 my system took the usual 15-30 seconds to reboot on the first try but back to 4-5 minutes each time afterwards.
Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!

you are welcome
Are you familiar with using the root account under OSX ?
If not, here is how to enable it:
in Finder click on Go in menu
at the top of the Screen  from the Go menu select Computer
there click on Macintosh HD <if your harddisk has a different name, choose that name instead>
click on System
click on Library
click on CoreServices
open the app named Directory Utility
in Directory Utility click on Edit in menu at the top of the Screen
from the Edit menu select Enable Root User
you will be asked  to enter a password for root
if you want to keep the root account active afterwards, choose a secure and strong password
Now let's get back to the original problem:
Let's assume your current account is called Waldorf and the new one is called Stadler
Log out of your current account and log into the root account
Now open Terminal from the /Programs/Utilities folder
Enter the following commands into terminal one at a time:
cd /Users/waldorf
cp -Rpv Documents/* /Users/stadler/Documents/
cp -Rpv Movies/* /Users/stadler/Movies/
cp -Rpb Music/* /Users/stadler/Music/
cp -Rpv Pictures/* /Users/stadler/Pictures/
Depending on the amount of data contained in Waldorf's home directory, those commands might take some time to complete. Now you need to change the owner of your files to the new account
cd /Users/stadler/
chown -R stadler:staff Documents/
chown -R stadler:staff Downloads/
chown -R stadler:staff Movies/
chown -R stadler:staff Music/
chown -R stadler:staff Pictures/
chown -R stadler:staff Public/
If everything went well, you now can log into the Stadler account and should have all the files from Waldorf and hopefully boot time will be significantly shorter.
It is generally not a bad idea to deactivate the root account again after you have finished. Working with root allows to do things that normally cannot be done in Finder. Yet there is absolutely no safety net (such as the trash bin) and a slight mistake can have grave consequences. If need rises it can be activate in a short moment.

  • Imac takes 5-6 minutes to boot up

    Hello
My 2011 Imac takes 5-6 minutes to boot up. Once it boots up the computer seems to run fine. I have tried several things to try and fix the issue but have had no luck. Any advice would be great.
    Thank you
    Richard

RAM is not the problem. If you refuse to reinstall as suggested, then:
Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • MBP takes 1.25 minutes to boot up!

    Hi all!
I've seen that most MBP take on average from 35 to 40 seconds to start and be ready to work. Mine takes 1.25 minutes to do it! To top it up, it's not really ready to work, it still takes a few (15) other seconds to let me open apps smoothly. If I try to open anything right after boot up, it starts to stumble.
I've already tried all tricks I've found here: duplicated fonts (which I had); boot from DVD; repair permissions; run Onyx and delete caches and so on. My computer keeps taking ages to boot up; what else should I do?
    Help please!

    Thank you all guys!
I tried the method above, but also I've been keeping an eye on my console to see what happens at boot up. Finding the VirtualPC problem (mentioned above), my approach was to track down all VirtualPC stuff in my MBP and delete it.
Doing these two things, the boot up time's been reduced from 1.25 (or more) to 54 secs. However there is one more thing that could still be making my MBP stumble and it's the following messages on the console:

  • Why does my Macbook take 5-8 minutes to boot up from a shut down?

It started after the latest update. Lion Version 10.7.5 -  I shut down and when I start it back up, it stays at the gray screen. A bar shows the progress, but it never did this before. Takes at least 5 minutes. It never did that before the last update.

I found out that it was my hard drive that was failing thus taking very long to boot up. If you are experiencing this after the last Lion update, take you Mac to the Apple store for analysis. Back it up immediately! You will probably need a new hard drive. Expect to spend $215 + tax. Sorry for the bad news, but I just went through it. If you don't have an external drive for back up, sign up for Google Drive or Drop Box, compress your files and transfer them to the online drives.

  • I installed snow leopard on my mac mini and now it takes roughly 10 minutes to boot

I have a mac mini 1.5ghz with 1gb of ram installed.
I was running leopard with the combo update (10.5.8) but decided to install snow leopard as some of my apps need 10.6.8 to run.
The mac now boots past the grey screen with the apple logo then goes to a blue screen where i can move my mouse but nothing else.
This lasts for roughly 10-11 mins and then finally goes to my desktop and sure enough everything works  perfectly and fast too.
It used to boot in around 30 seconds when i had leopard installed.  If it can not be fixed i will be happy going back to leopard but i dont want to lose anything when i install it.
    Any advice would be appreciated
    Thanks

Mac OS X 10.6: If you see a blue screen at startup .
You may need to reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • My Macbook Pro (10.6.8) takes about 5 minutes to boot

I'm not against a Re-Format, but short of that is there anything that could be recommended? Its just a pain to reinstall all the software.

Try starting up in  Safe Mode  and Repair Disk.

My Intel iMac 27" iMac 2.7Ghz 8 GB running OSX 10.9.2 now takes almost 5 minutes to boot up. I have tried all the unplugging resets etc but to no avail. There are no peripheral devises attached and everything functions normally when it does decide to boot up. I have masses of memeory left. 1.8Tb and there does not appear to be any problem after running disc utlity. I'm stuck! Any ideas please?

  • Computer takes 20 minutes to boot.

My PC takes about 20 minutes to boot, and if it even does boot. It gets stuck at the BIOS start up with the MSI  8Xtreme Series Intel on the black screen, and just sits there.. Is there a way to move some jumpers and reset the BIOS to factory defaults, if that is even the problem. Please if anyone has ANY idea about how to take care of this, im willing to do anything, Im sitting here in college, neededing to write this paper, and my Laptop has a small screen compaired to my desktop. Thanks
    -Joe
PS. The PC dosnt even get past that part it seems... Please help!!

Remove all the hardware (PCI cards, USB devices, HDDs, CDROMs etc..) and only keep the bare minimum yuo need (memory, CPU, VGA card).
Don't even connect a mouse and KB to it.
Does it work normally (give you a KB error message probably) ?
Try another KB if it seems ok (and make sure you plug it in the right place), don't overlook any detail in such cases.

  • My 24" iMac takes 6 rimes longer to boot than my 20"

I have an early 25" iMac, 10.5.2 2.16, 2GB, 500HD. I takes nearly 6 minutes to boot up. I also have an older 20" iMac 10.5.2 2.0, 1GB, 250K with almost exactly same software, etc that boots in less than a minute. Why is the newer model so slow? I do have the 24" connected to 500GB USB for Time Machine.

    Hi,
I'm not sure this will help but it's worth a try - leave your 24" on overnight go to the "Energy Saver" in Preference set the computer to "Never" Sleep and un-check the box at the bottom to keep the hard drive active. It's OK to put the "Display" to sleep. In the wee hours of the morning the Mac will run certain maintenance programs automatically that may help out your slow boot up. I have a 24"it boots from a cold start in about 30 seconds with several fire wire drives cascaded to the FW 800 port. Maybe you have tried this approach just thought I'd chime in.
    Hope it helps,

Good advice Steve (and the Ancients).
Another option I have used in the past to handle system maintenance is MacJanitor, but it is not made specifically for Intel Macs, and can be buggy. I have found this alternative though, you may want to check it out rather than leave your iMac on 24hrs a day:

  • HT1846 Windows take a long time to boot up with black screen and a blinking cursor. Help anyone?

Im running 64-bit windows 7 on my late 2012 mac mini. When it boots, it takes around few minutes to boot to windows. During the few minutes, it shows a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left. Is there any ways to remove it and go straight to windows?

  • Lion - 45 minutes to boot up, all actions slow

I have a year and a half old iMac running Lion, maxed 16GB Ram, standard 1 TB HD etc... It was fine until the last couple weeks, when it now takes literally 45 minutes to boot up from restart, and any actions take a good minute and I get the color wheel (even when just trying to click on File Menu, color wheel appears).
I've run DIsk Utilities from a Lion Install DVD, repaired permissions and disk.  I've cleaned out all caches in the library.  I've even re-installed Lion (not a clean re-install).  I'd much prefer to avoid erasing the HD to re-install Lion.  I haven't installed any new programs or hardware.
I've run Norton Anti-virus and it reports a clean HD.
I've opened Activity Monitor and the CPU and Memory is hardly used at all.
I've tried erasing the PRAM, but the machine boots too slow for the Keyboard to connect to the iMac, and when it will connect, it's already booting up and past the point of being able to give the command option P R... PRAM reset keys.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    -Brad

You can try this, clearing out the dyld cache. That's the most likely reason for the spinning pinwheel of death

I hope that will help, it won;t hurt, but I am not sure it is the full cause of your issues.

  • Upgraded Air to Yosemite takes 5 Minutes to boot

I am not sure it's usefull for a Pivot Table because a Pivot table needs to load all the data and then compute Row and Columns,

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2013) take 3+ minutes to boot.

Once booted, however, everything is normal. Everything opens instantly as it used to.
While trouble-shooting, I noticed that there were many (more than a 1000 messages saying ACL found but not expected at ....
I repaired them but doing another Verify saw them pop up again. I used ACLr8 and got rid of them fowever but this has had zero efffect on the boot time. Also, Disk Utility reports no errors.
I should also note that this is a refurbished model bought last week and I am running with a Time Machine nackup. It is a 512 GB SSD. The machine from which the backup deribed was a 256 GB SSD. I also reinstalled Mavericks. The "old" machine took about 15 seconds to boot.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I wouldn't be worried about that bootup time. In the case of some Macs with Mavericks, startup takes about a minute, or at least in my case, so I don't think if it applies to the MacBook Pro with Retina display but it looks like OS X Mavericks has got a longer startup time

  • 5G iPod Takes 10-15 minutes to unmount/boot

After I sync my 5G iPod and iTunes says it's OK to disconnect,I unmount (eject) my iPod from iTunes. However, it takes approximately 12 to 13 minutes before my iPod's hard drive stops spinning and the Do Not Disconnect message is replaced by the iPod menu.
Also, when my iPod resets, it also takes 12 to 13 minutes to boot. While I expected a 5th Gen iPod to take longer, it only took my 3G iPod 3 or 4 minutes to boot.
I cannot imagine this sort of wear is doing any favors to my iPod's drive. Any ideas as to what's going on here, or what I might be able to do to remedy the situation?
    Dell Dimension E510   Windows XP   5G 80GB iPod, 3G 40GB iPod

Mine takes maybe 1 minute to return to the menu screen after clicking the disconnect icon in itunes and it only takes a minute or two to reset also. I have all but 12gb used for mostly music and audio files.
One guess is that there is a problem with the hard drive that is causing it to do alot of retries to get the data off of the disk. It also could be something funky happened to the code in the ipod that a complete restore would fix. I would suggest doing a restore to see if that fixes it. This will wipe your ipod and reload it from itunes, so make sure all of your content is in itunes before trying it.

  • I have a HP Pavilion p6710f with an AMD Athlon Quad-Core processor takes 10 to 12 minutes to boot

I have a refurbished HP Pavilion p6710f desktop, with an AMD Quad-Core processor.  About 4 weeks aog I reformated the HD and reinstalled Windows 7 Prof and the rest o my software and it ran fine for about 2 weeks then it started taking 5 to 10 minutes to boot up in morning or to restart.  I had downloaded a couple of things and I uninstalled them and it did better, but gradually over the last week it has started taking 10 to 15 minutes to boot up or restart.  With either it takes a few seconds to get the HP stuff in the middle of the monitor, then in a few seconds it loads the choices (Function keys for setup, recover, etc.) then it takes 4 to five minutes to show "windows loading" the 3 to 4 minutes to show the 4-colored windows logo and then up to 5 minutes to load my icons and be ready to run--once all this is done everything runs fine until I need to restart, and then it is 10 to 15 minutes again to get up and running.
When I redid everything about 4 weeks ago I made an image on an external 1 Tb HD that is always connected thru a UBB Port and this morning I recovered and It reinstalled it, but it did not help.
Don't think it is the BIOS battery as it doesn't lose time.
    Hope someone can help me
