Mavericks Time Machine Server - multiple client backups disappear and merge

Hi there,
In our environment, which is shop environment where many computers are worked on, we use a Mac Pro with roughly 5TB disk space running Mavericks server. Essentially, we rename the computers to be worked on (in the Sharing pane of System preferences), then use Time Machine to connect and backup using a Sharing Only account that exists on the server. The TM backups are verified using Migration Assistant by opening MA and making sure the option to restore is present, without the 'No Backup Volumes found' message, common with TM backups on the network. All OS's are backing up to our server, the oldest being 10.6 and the newest likely being 10.10 now.
Recently, we have noticed some backups seemingly disappear from the server. Just this morning, I looked at a VERY large sparesbundle and got curious.
Upon launching Migration Assistant and opening that very large sparsebundle, I was able to find all the backups that 'dissappeared'. This is very concerning, as all of these backups were verified using MA immediately after having been created.  Migration Assistant is quit, the system shut down, and the computer's work proceeds.
A few bits of information:
-Computers sometimes come in to our shop (Apple Authorized) not being able to boot, so their storage volume is booted either via target mode or plugged in to another known good mac via a RocketStor Thunderbolt Dock, or simply directly in to another Mac
-if a computer boots it is backed up natively using it's own OS
-All of this takes place using AFP connections, and over an enterprise network, but devices are all plugged in to the same switch (at this point).
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the disappearance of the backups, and they are very frustrating to attempt to locate when they 'go missing', especially since these backups are only looked for when a HDD is wiped and data is needed....
Any help is appreciated! As stated earlier, we are an Apple warranty authorized shop in a collegiate environment. Thanks all!
Best,
Chris

I suggest you turn it back on, at least on the ones you want to back up.
Is this necessary? It seems to do half the backup without it. If I remember correctly I have indexing turned off not only because I don't use it but also because it was hanging up/using a lot of CPU... If I absolutely must I will turn the indexing back on and wait for it to do its dirty business, but I'm a bit reticent in trading my problem for one that I don't really have an interest in solving.

  • Time machine server makes client freeze.

I got a macpro server with 10.8.3 and osx server running on the network as a time machine backup.
After the server is a few hours connected to the mac pro client with a gigabit network connection, the client feezes. Not responding to anything.
When I dissconect the network cable, all remains normal.
This happens everyday when I leave the system on overnight.
Does anyone know where to start looking?
    Cheers,
    Karel.

    Thank you,
I turned off the server and disconnected before leaving last night and even then it crashed at 5.50 in the morning... This is what I got. As you can see it cycles trough the same things over and over.
Until it finally frose around  05:50:55,419.
I did a hard reset of the system on 09:43:38,000.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Time Machine Server backup speed

Has anyone used time machine on OS X 10.5.8 Server to backup 50+ client machines at one time?
We have a project where we will be binding 50 Macs to AD and migrating user data.  We have a process for the migration and will have done extensive testing by the time the migration happens, so if I have any questions about that it will be in a different forum.
We would like to have a solid backup that is easy to restore if we run into issues.  We have Retrospect backups yet the backup server is a Windows 2008 Server and sometimes even restoring small amounts of data can be troublesome.  I would rather not restore a user's account using Retrospect if at all possible.
We don't want to goto each machine and use Carbon Copy Cloner if possible, yet we are looking into using CCC over the network for backups/restores.
One backup plan is to setup a Time Machine server on one of our OD masters with an external RAID.
Next we touch every machine and direct each client to the Time Machine Backup drive on the network and they all start backing up.
How long would you think it takes for 50+ machines averaging 10GB of data to backup using Time Machine on a new Gigabit LAN with CAT 5e cables and a Cisco managed switch setup?
Is there a way in ARD to send a command to set clients to choose a Time Machine Backup server?
If you were in my position and needed to backup 50+ machines in the shortest amount of time with the quickest/easiest restore process, how would you do it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Well SAM
It actually worked. THANKS A BUNCH! I trying again as root, allthough I thought sudo did it.
I needed to first do some repairing (permissions and so on), change the host name and bind all the machines anew to server.
Anyway it finall works. The disk is available form startup prior to ANY login.
So aganin: thank you. I am sorry I can't find how to change the appraisal of your answer from 'helped' to 'solved' to give you more credit(s).

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and the time machine is failing to backup.  Time Machine began only backing up twice a day and now has stopped.

This is the error message I got:
    2014-03-18 17:02:30 -0400 com.apple.backupd[4971]: Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/TOSHIBA EXT/Backups.backupdb/Quincy’s iMac size:37

  • Time machine can't open backups after installing Mavericks

When upgrading to Mavericks the installation failed with a disk error. In the shop they formated the disk and re-installed 10.6.8. It appear that there was nothing wrong with the disk anyway.
Of course formatting caused me to loose all data, but I had made a new Timemachine backup before the installation.
Getting the computer back with old OS and empty I called to ask which should be the order of the following:
    1. Upgrade to Mavericks
    2. Restore my data from Timemachine
Advice was the above so this morning I upgraded successfully to Mavericks. However when I would like restore data (after a few issues making the Mac see the external backup disk) it appears thet Timemachine cannot open the backups older than this morning. It can see then on the right side of the screen, though. Can anyone tell me how to access these backups made under 10.6.8, please.
Another challenge will be that iPhoto does not seem to exist anymore. So if the Timemachine backup gets to work, to where would I restore photos?
    Kind regards
    Morten

Explanation is that Time Machine created a "new" backup when backup disk was first time connected after migration to Mavericks. This backup was obviously empty, i.e. only containing Mavericks but no user data. Consequently Migration assistant would find no data to migrate.
Solution was to go to Backups.backupdb on the external disk (in Finder)  and manually delete the backups created after the migration to Mavericks. Now the Migration assistant saw the backup I created just before the initial failed migration to Mavericks and could succesfully migrate all my data.
I guess you should be VERY careful with what you do manually on the backup disk, but I was out of options and the advice from the local shop worked.

  • Mavericks Time Machine Backup in Yosemite?

They say there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who backup and those who wish they did. I am the backup person, but when I did a clean install of Yosemite on my HD for a number of reasons, I cannot find my iphoto files (1000s of pictures). And I can't seem to utilize Time Machine at all. I have been able to manually drag files (music, documents, etc.) from the backup folder on the disk to the new system.  But nowhere are my iphoto pictures....
So, where do I get the iPhoto files so I don't lose all my pictures? Is there a way to access a Mavericks Time Machine in Yosemite? Any help would be appreciated.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • Time Machine showing multiple times in finder

One of my clients is having an issue where throughout the week the time machine volume will slowly keep adding multiple copys of itself to his finder sidebar. It seems like it is not unmounting after a backup and will clutter the finder sidebar. A reboot removes them but they always come back.

Are those backups on a network?
If so, yes, that does happen on occasion.  Exactly why it happens isn't clear, but It may be that while the volume is mounted by Time Machine to do a backup, the user enters the "Star Wars" display to look at the same set of backups, and somehow with both accessing it at the same time, the last process to use it doesn't realize it needs to be unmounted.
It may also be that the backups aren't finished indexing when the backup completes, so doesn't unmount them.
You might want to try repairing them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Cannot use my Mac Mini server as Time Machine server

    Hello,
May some one can help me...
I try to connect clients to a time Machine server, well it's seems to be a bit difficult, I created user's accounts, computers accounts, group of computers... It works for the update services, but after configuring Time Machine on the server, shared in server admin, in Workgroup manager, file sharing, preference pane, user's services... I can see the volume in time machine preferences, but there is always the same issue, first message is "the disk is not reachable" second "there is a probleme with the network name and password" I tried with different posix, ACLS, with user's password, server admin password, directory admin password... Well I'm a bit tired...
I tried on the server and on a Promise 4To, I can see the shared items folder and the Backups foledr and that the only thing I can do...
Well if some one can help me it will be great for me and for every body arround me...
    Thanks,
    Nicolas

    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for your answer.
There must be something wrong in the different steps I follow.
Firts I set Time machine on the server for each user, shoosing the Volume "SmartStor" (a network volume attached on the Mac Mini server) it creates a "Shared items" folder with a "Backups" folder in.
In Server Admin tools I can see in the AFP services the share point /Backups
In Workgroup Manager I set the Time Machine's preferences for the different computers and computers' group with the path afp://myserver.local/Backups/
At least on my client's computer I can shoose the volume "Backups" "on my server".
And it doesn't work... even with all the logins and password, User's, Dir Admin and Server Admin.
With User's and Dir Admin it runs quickly and tells "the volume is not reachable on account of wrong user's name or password"
With Server Admin login and password it runs indefinitly, nothing occurs ...
Is there something to do in terminal ?
Well I tried to find explanations on the web but I found nothing for the moment... The informations are to set a network volume in Terminal in place of the default one...
'Hope to find soon, I can't stand that something runs for every one but not with me...

  • Time machine stalling with network backup to Live Duo

I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and using a Western Digital Live Duo (NAS with 6TB set up with RAID1 (mirror)) for backup with Time Machine (TM). The WD Live Duo has a specific feature for supporting Time Machine and shares a partition for TM backup, but something is wacky as TM came up a few days ago saying that it had validated the backup and needed to create a new backup.
The NAS is available on the network, I can easily access it from multiple computers on our home network as well as from the iMac I'm trying to backup.
I'm connected to the NAS via a network switch (1000/100/10) that both the NAS and this iMac are connected to using Gigabit ethernet wired connections.
Time machine has been running for 2 days now and reports " 67.63GB of 363.44 GB - About 5 days" . Yesterday it said 4 days.. ;-)
I've been having issues with TM stalling and eating up all the resources when I was just backing up to a local USB drive.
Is there any other control for TM that is not visible? Where would I find the TM logs to see if something else is going on?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks.

Backing up with Time Machine to a third-party network device is unsupported by Apple and unreliable. Most if not all such devices use the obsolete "netatalk" implementation of AFP, which doesn't meet the technical requirements for a Time Machine server. I strongly suggest you back up to two or more locally attached external hard drives. If you want network backup, use an Apple Time Capsule or another Mac with File Sharing active as the destination.

Time machine fails to complete backup

I've been getting the Unable to Complete Backup error message for several days.  Last good back up was 11-22-13 at 11:13PM.  I am running an iMac with OS-X 10.7.5.
I did the above steps in Console and got a huge string of lines; I tried to edit all repeitious ones that were the same, but still ended up with a lot of lines that seemed to develop more different processes over a few days.  Sorry to put all this stuff in here, but I don't honestly know what to make of all of this code language.

  • Time Machine shows multiple mounts in finder

I have a client running the latest version of 10.6 and backing up via Time Machine to a Mac Mini Server also running the latest version of 10.6. Over the course of a week he will build up a collection of Time Machine mounts in the finder that cannot be ejected. It seems sometimes it ejects correctly and other times not. I don't see a pattern to what is happening.
I tried deleting his backups and starting from scratch an that didn't help. I'm thinking it could be something on his iMac. Anyone else seen this problem?

Are those backups on a network?
If so, yes, that does happen on occasion.  Exactly why it happens isn't clear, but It may be that while the volume is mounted by Time Machine to do a backup, the user enters the "Star Wars" display to look at the same set of backups, and somehow with both accessing it at the same time, the last process to use it doesn't realize it needs to be unmounted.
It may also be that the backups aren't finished indexing when the backup completes, so doesn't unmount them.
You might want to try repairing them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time Machine Server - external firewire 800 RAID array incompatible??

    Hi all
I originally posted in the wrong forum... so here I go again...
I have an XServe G5 connected to an 8TB RAID array via firewire 800 (running latest version of leopard server) purchased solely to act as a time machine server for a whole bunch of machines. A lot of money and resources went toward this as this is a vital part of our office. One of the machines is a completely decked out Mac Pro with 4x500GB Hard Drives striped for multimedia processing. (Thats why I need a HUGE backup partition on Time Machine)
Now, this was working for about 4 months. Some computers still see the backup array as a destination, but can't write to it, (just sit there for ever "preparing backup") and one machine successfully is still backing up to it.
But for the majority of the machines, when I try to set the Xserve external raid array as a Time Machine destination for the network, it comes up with a yellow "!" sign and "This disk drive may not support Time Machine over the network. Get more information about compatible drives" with a link that points here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306332
As you can see, that was completely not helpful, and now i'm wondering if I'll still have a job after the boss finds out I've just wasted his several thousands of dollars...
When selecting a backup destination for time machine backups, the array appears, but it always says "Failed" with an "i" next to Latest Backup in the system preferences, with the message "Backup volume cannot be found". Thats not true because i've so much as gone to the effort of actually mounting the dang drive in the finder... so its just not looking hard enough!
Here is some info about the external device:
It looks like a PC tower thing, with 8 firewire 800 ports on the back and 8 internal SATA slots. I purchased 8x1TB drives and inserted them in, and software partitioned them to create a giant striped drive (I understand that this might be a little unstable but its just a backup drive).
I daisy chained the firewire 800 ports on the back to output 2 cables, both going in the back of the xserve. Formatted fine, and works a treat. Except for the silly time machine thing....
I think what I am going to do is completely and utterly start again... go nuts one weekend and erase everything, every computer, every wireless router, everything, and start fresh. Since there have been so many little glitches here and there I just want them dead.
Well, if anyone has a quick fix, i'd appreciated it before the weekend

Hi everyone, Just thought I would give you all an update on how things went.
Lets just say that I got everything working fine... this is what I did.
    1. I went through, completely un-raided and formatted the external 8 Bay firewire 800 drive
    2. Completely reformatted XServe and reinstalled fresh (Probably not an option for a few, but I had a spare weekend)
    3. Completely reformatted all client computers and reset all client accounts (Once again, probably not an option for most)
Essentially, I was starting out with a completely virgin setup and setting up for the first time. I installed the firewire 800 drives, and made them into a RAID again. Then installed Leopard server. Brought all the backed up files across, and when I plugged in the drive in Finder, it asked "Do you want to use this as a time machine backup" to which I said "Yes". It proceeded to create a backup.
When that finished, I went into server preferences, and selected the external as a time machine backup for the network. It worked...
I then went about everything like business as usual, and everything worked great. Still going... for now.
So thanks for all that helped, maybe try completely reinstalling everything and it may work.

  • Time Machine with multiple users on single computer

    Hi All,
I have an iMac at home with multiple user log ons. I'm about to get the Time Capsule and start using Time Machine (currently I use backup).
When I switch on Time Machine, does it switch on for all users, or will each user need to turn on Time Machine?
If I have to switch on Time Machine for each user, will each user's time machine back up the entire computer (so I'll have two complete copies on my computer on the external drive)?
If this does occur, can I control what Time Machine backs up so TM only backs up user specific information?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

When you first backup it will backup your whole system (user directories, system directories, applications, etc) unless you specify folders to exclude. When a user account is added to the computer, their home folder will be added to the backup in a similar way to if you added a new application. It will back up the directory structure exactly as it is on your main hard drive. The backup will essentially keep a copy of the whole hard drive on the backup drive.
The Time Machine will either be on for the whole system, or off for the whole system. It is not on or off for a specific user account. Users (depending on if they've got admin privileges) may have control over turning time machine on or off, but this does not change who can access the backups. All users will be able to invoke Time Machine to get to their backed up files.
Time Machine does not make separate backups for individual users. Instead, it preserves the permissions for backed up files, so while every user can access the backups, they cant just browse other users' files on the backup. The same restrictions on the main drive are carried over to the backup. Still, a standard user who's lost a file will be able to go into Time Machine, access a backed up version of the file, and restore it. Unlike standard users who are restricted from seeing other users' files in the backups, Admins are also restricted but they can be authenticated to view other users' files if they want to.

  • Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  Tried suggestions I've seen on the forum.

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

Those indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.
