Mavericks Time Machine stops halfway and weird mds errors

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I have not been able to do backups using Time Machine. Most of the time it stops during the "Preparing Backup..." phase but by deleting prefs and incomplete backups I have been able to get about 50% into writing the backup to my external drive. The backup doesn't crash, but all disk writes and reads stop and the process uses no CPU (it also makes no progress, I've waited there for about an hour after the bar stopped moving).
In addition to this (and possibly related, although I don't know how) I get this message in the console every 30s when my external hard drive is plugged in:
mds[37]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
and mdutil -as gives me:
    Indexing and searching disabled.
/.MobileBackups:
2013-12-23 16:30:43.345 mdutil[555:507] Metadata.framework [Error]: mdsCopyStoreAttributes failed: (8) (os/kern) no access
    No index.
/Volumes/Hitachi:
    Indexing and searching disabled.
/Volumes/Hitachi/Backups.backupdb:
    Indexing enabled.
I have indexing turned off for all my drives, so I imagine the indexing is on for the backups folder as a default necessity (I cannot seem to be able to turn it off using the mdutil command).
Does anyone know how these two things are connected and what could possibly be going wrong?

I suggest you turn it back on, at least on the ones you want to back up.
Is this necessary? It seems to do half the backup without it. If I remember correctly I have indexing turned off not only because I don't use it but also because it was hanging up/using a lot of CPU... If I absolutely must I will turn the indexing back on and wait for it to do its dirty business, but I'm a bit reticent in trading my problem for one that I don't really have an interest in solving.

Is this a Firewire or Thunderbolt connected disk?  There are know issues with that in Mavericks.  If so try connecting the drive by USB as you continue.
Is it a WD drive?  There appear to be issues with those drive on Mavericks.

  • Time Machine Disk Full and Disk Repair Errors?

I have an external USB drive connected to an iMac that I use for TM backup. I received severel disk is full messages today, and the iMac told me that is was going to delete older backups and that's fine. But, I also have a MacBook backing up through the network (Airport) and that the Macbook was giving me the backup disk is full errors, and now it's saying: Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume...etc. And now that error is followed by a Disk Repair error saying the disk needs to be reformatted? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to see that no one has replied to Christopher in the two months since his post.
After 5 weeks of successful back ups I am now getting this same TM Error followed by Disk Repair error. The first time it happened I moved the sparsebundle and let TM start over. That worked fine and lasted one week, but now the errors are back. Today I tried repairing the sparsebundle in Disk Utility and it too failed with the following:
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
The same Airport attached 500GB HD has been receiving TM back-ups from another Mac for over a month with no incidents, and houses my iPhoto library along with a hundred gigs of other stuff.
The other Mac connects exclusively via ethernet. My PowerBook uses ethernet or wifi.
Something with my TM is corrupting the disk image. I'd sure like to figure this out.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up but doesn't give warning/error

    Hi,
by chance I noticed, that Time Machine doesn't backup up any more, but still doesn't give errors.  In Console I see the following for a now typical run:
    21.04.15 09:58:11,493 com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
    21.04.15 09:58:12,043 com.apple.backupd: Backing up to: /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb

    21.04.15 09:59:04,385 com.apple.backupd: Copied 36 files (93 bytes) from volume DATA.

    21.04.15 09:59:07,762 com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.
The 5.18 GB are never backed up.  The backup drive (drosera-backup-02) is attached by FireWire.  I have checked the disk with First Aid, I have disconnected and reconnected it.  I removed the backup disk from Time Machine, stopped TM and reconfigured.  I stopped mds, ran backups and reenabled mds.  All to no avail.
I am at a complete loss and I'd appreciate to get this running w/o having to remove all existing backups.  Any ideas or pointers?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Mac mini
    Cheers
    Frank

Thx.  I had already tried the hints from mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume to no avail.  Your tip to rebuild the Spotlight index would probably helped, too.  But just before getting yout comment and after reading http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69054/force-time-machine-to-perform-a-d eep-traversal I had simply removed /.fseventsd and reran a backup.  That seems to have fixed the problem (at least for the time being).
Interesting side note: During the non-backup phase I created a new account on the Mac and ran TM.  This triggered a one-time working backup of the whole system, but all subsequent backups again failed silently.  Additionally the externally attached FireWire harddrive was always backed up correctly, only backups of the local drive failed.

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • Can I have mavericks time machine on one partition of a WD  external hard drive and snow leopard data on another

can I have mavericks time machine on one partition of a WD  external hard drive and snow leopard data on another

If you want to and it is so large that it has room (350% is a good estimate for TimeMachine), then use a partition(s) to hold system restore images or bootable clones. Or VM images.
Using SSDs most Mac Pro models can easily hold 6 or more storage devices inside, except the nMP cylinder 6,1's;  which do need external Thunderbolt and USB3.
System drive / data / scratch / backup data / backups of system / ....
I recommend a couple system backups, especially when faced with dual boot situations as well as an OS that is still undergoing updates and changes.

  • Mavericks Time Machine Server - multiple client backups disappear and merge

    Hi there,
In our environment, which is shop environment where many computers are worked on, we use a Mac Pro with roughly 5TB disk space running Mavericks server. Essentially, we rename the computers to be worked on (in the Sharing pane of System preferences), then use Time Machine to connect and backup using a Sharing Only account that exists on the server. The TM backups are verified using Migration Assistant by opening MA and making sure the option to restore is present, without the 'No Backup Volumes found' message, common with TM backups on the network. All OS's are backing up to our server, the oldest being 10.6 and the newest likely being 10.10 now.
Recently, we have noticed some backups seemingly disappear from the server. Just this morning, I looked at a VERY large sparesbundle and got curious.
Upon launching Migration Assistant and opening that very large sparsebundle, I was able to find all the backups that 'dissappeared'. This is very concerning, as all of these backups were verified using MA immediately after having been created.  Migration Assistant is quit, the system shut down, and the computer's work proceeds.
    A few bits of information:
-Computers sometimes come in to our shop (Apple Authorized) not being able to boot, so their storage volume is booted either via target mode or plugged in to another known good mac via a RocketStor Thunderbolt Dock, or simply directly in to another Mac
-if a computer boots it is backed up natively using it's own OS
-All of this takes place using AFP connections, and over an enterprise network, but devices are all plugged in to the same switch (at this point).
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the disappearance of the backups, and they are very frustrating to attempt to locate when they 'go missing', especially since these backups are only looked for when a HDD is wiped and data is needed....
Any help is appreciated! As stated earlier, we are an Apple warranty authorized shop in a collegiate environment. Thanks all!
    Best,
    Chris

  • Time machine stopped working after upgrading to lion

After upgrading to lion my time machine has not been able to back up. I finally figured out what was the problem. The disk utility tool found an error in the backup disk and fixed it. I guess some error occurred while the upgrade to Lion was on the way.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up; Spotlight not working

Recently, Spotlight search stopped returning results for applications, and no amount of reseting Spotlight or rebuilding the index has helped. I had given up on that, then today I noticed that the last backup Time Machine completed was on 10 January 2013. Both scheduled backups and manual backups get terminated early, after backing up 30MB or so.
system.log in Console displays these messages for Spotlight and Time Machine respectively:

I have verified both my startup disk (XXX) and the external hard disk (YYY) I use for Time Machine, and both "appear to be OK".
Something is wrong with my system but I'm not sure what. Can someone help please? I'm using an iMac10,1 running 10.8.2.

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for replying.
I managed to backup with Time Machine in safe mode and I can backup manually after rebooting. Spotlight still did not work normally in safe mode, but it appears to be working fine now… I am not sure if my problems have been resolved though.
Could you please take a look at the Console messages and, if possible, explain what they mean or what errors were encountered? I would like to know the cause of Spotlight and Time Machine's failure, and if it is possible to prevent.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network.
Five minutes before upgrading it however performed successfully a last backup.
I found several posts on this forum and proposed solutions:
    - restarted both the mac and capsule
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (twice rebooting in between)
    Still have the issue.

What brand of drive is it?

  • HT3275 Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.

Please help guys, I have a Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.
I am trying to use time machine to back up the hard drive. For backing up from Macbooik pro and Imac, there is no problem. It seems to not want to allow the external drive to be removed from the Excluded list and as such will not back up from it.
Is there a way to be able to transfer files (music, movies etc) to time machine, format the external drive then put the files back to hard drive?
Sorry it is a long winded question but it is driving me nuts that I cant sort this out.
The <Macbook and Imac are both running mountain lion.
    Thanks Guys

As for the hard drive to which you have never been able to write, is it by any chance in NTFS format? OS X can read NTFS for importing files, but it does not contain code for writing on an NTFS volume. That's a choice, not a bug.
There is third-party software available to install NTFS-writing capability into OS X. An example is Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Another alternative would be to use a disk format that both Macs and Windows systems can use for both reading and writing; this would require either a new drive or erase the existing data.
If by "the new system software" you mean OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you may want to repost that portion of your query in the Mavericks forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks . I haven't made the leap yet.
I don't know what other problems you have been having, so I cannot comment on them. You don't seem to have any other recent postings on these forums.

  • Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode

Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode then restarts to try to start the Back up process again and again vicious cycle. I have made sure all settings are turned off. I have done one or two backups since the initial first backup. My HDD is almost full and I want it backed up before I try to clone/mirror the drive to upgrade it to a 1TB HDD. Thank you in advance.

Set the Energy Saver (in System Preferences) to Never. Then reset the NVRAM, as follows:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 update - Time Machine not working and other trouble.

I've upgraded my mid 2010 mac mini server to 10.6.7 with server Combo download.
After installation (without any errors) i've detected this troubleshooting.
Time Machine (backup hd is the 2nd 500GB Hd of mini server) dont work more and
display error message that suggest to verify hard disks (done with no errors detection).
    Mac Help display white page.
And if try to install Server Admin Tools, installation utility not recognize system HD and cannot be done.
The mac mini server seems however works and services seems works rights. Can be rebooted without problems.
I've tried to backup the system disk on the second hd with Carbon Copy Cloner without problem and it recognize system disk well.
I've upgraded also two others mac minis (mid 2010) with standard 10.6.7 version (no server) and a macbook and a macbook pro without problems (but i've not tried time machine on them).
Thanks in advance for any help!

I know the problems with Time Machine on Mac OS server. In your case: Look at the log files, searching for "backupd", if that tells you anything.
In my case, Time Machine in the last year stopped several times. Occasionally, there was a helpful message in the log files where I could identify a file where it had hung -- typically intermediate build results of Xcode. After excluding or deleting the offending files (where possible), Time Machine ran successfully.
Another situation which has repeatedly occurred is that time machine just hangs and does not progress, and no log entry helps. In 3 such cases what helped was to delete the spotlight index (e.g., with TinkerTool System) and let it rebuild. It took inordinately long (10 hrs) and there were log entries by mdworker that it had difficulty processing files. But when the spotlight index was finally rebuilt, Time Machine worked again.
BTW: I don't need Time Machine to backup the server system, for that I run mirrors etc., but for user files it is most convenient and has helped several times. Thus I have excluded nearly everything but /User/*.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up

I am using Time Machine on a 500 GB Time Capsule (which also serves as my Internet router). I have 3 Macs using Time Machine: 1) PowerMac G4, 2) PowerMac G5, 3) MacBook. The G4 is wired to the Time Capsule, the G5 and the MacBook are wireless. The G4 does not have a wireless card. From all machines, I can browse the Time Capsule and see the backup files contained there.
The PowerMac G5 and the MacBook still function normally and are being backed up regularly with Time Machine. The G4 had been working fine, being backed up regularly, then the backups suddenly stopped. I can look at the Time Machine Preferences and see when the last backup occurred (Sept 4) and see that the Time Capsule has 264.7 GB of 463.3 GB available. I have 3 volumes attached to my Mac (excluding the Time Capsule) and have excluded entirely 2 of those attached volumes. The only volume included (my boot volume) I have configured to exclude a large number of files (most applications, for instance). The total used space on that drive is 186 GB, so I know that the backup is not too big.
I do not get any error messages that I am aware of (can you tell me somewhere specifically to look?). My configuration shows Time Machine in the menu bar, and if I select "Back Up Now" from that menu, nothing appears to happen. If I open the Time Machine Preferences pane and edit the EXCLUDE list, it appears to queue a backup, as the preference pane indicates next backup in 119 seconds, 118 seconds, etc, counting down to 1 second, and then jumps to next backup at xx:xx. I can keep the preference pane open and watch it until that time (xx:xx) actually ticks by on the clock and the time for Next Backup in the preference pane jumps to the next hour, with no backup performed.

    William,
A shot in the dark. I just posted this for someone with a similar but not identical issue. Try it for what it is worth. It at least might start getting us going in the right direction.
It can occur that Time Machine doesn’t recognize its’ own previous backups. In that case Time Machine will ignore these backups and attempt to start a full backup.
First try, Ctrl-click the Time Machine icon in the Dock and select “Browse Other Time machine disks…”
Now see if it will allow you to select the existing backups. Now can you go ‘back in time’ and see your previous data? Then it is indeed still there, it has just lost the link to it.
    *Computer Name*
If that’s the case, the most likely culprit is you or something else has changed the name of your computer.
Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. If the “Computer Name” field is blank, Time Machine will have a difficult time maintaining consistent backups. Before adding or changing the computer name do the following:
In a Finder window open your Time Machine drive.
    Open the folder labeled “Backups,backupdb”.
Inside is the folder containing the backups of the computer in question.
Note the name of the folder. It might be something like “Bills MacBook Pro”. That was your computers’ name when Time Machine performed its’ first full backup. If this name is missing or different in the Sharing “Computer Name” field then time Machine backups will fail.
Copy the name of the folder and paste it in the “Computer Name” field.
Next turn Sharing OFF and then back ON by unchecking and then rechecking the box on the left.
Close the backup folder and eject the Time Machine disk.
Now try resuming backups or launch Time Machine and try viewing your past data..
    *Corrupt Backup Files*
If you were not able to access your previous backups via the “Browse Other Time machine disks…” function, then it is likely that the backup data is corrupt.
In that case you’ll want to erase the disk or partition that the old backups are on and begin Time Machine backups again.
To help prevent future instances of corruption, avoid storing other data files on the same partition that the Time Machine backups reside on. Rather create a separate partition for other files and folders to use.
Let us know if any of the above helped.
