Mavericks update needs all external drives?
You have projects and events that refer to media on missing hard disks.
To ensure that this library has all the necessary media, connect the following hard disks and click Retry.
Mavericks and FCP 10.1.i update:
I don't have the ports to plug in all the hard drives at once. Any advise?
Of course it is normal to have events in different drives.
But if I understood correctly, you said FCP X named all the drives where you supposedly had media.
That suggested to me that you probably had one or several projects in your internal drive referencing media or events in all of those drives.
You specifically wrote that FCP X told you:
"You have projects and events that refer to media on missing hard disks."
My guess is that you used to keep projects in the internal drive, and events in several external ones.
This could make sense in your workflow, but you apparently were not fully aware of these interdependencies.

I am an amateur photographer and have lightroom. My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk. With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud? Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?
If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

Can I do a backup using Time Machine on a server, or it needs an external drive only?
Time Machine can back up to a server. The drive or partition used still needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Mavericks will read my external drive but not write to it
I have a Mac Mini ( late 2012) and have the latest version of Mavericks running. I am using an external drive for backing up my photos. About 4 months ago I received an error message that the backup failed and to check the drive using the disk management utility. I checked it using the repair function and it stated all partitions looked ok, there is only one partition. But in order to get it to work again I erased the drive and formatted again. Once complete I set the drive back up using Time Machine. All was good for a few months and then it started all over again. Now after I erase and reset up it only runs for a few backups and then starts with the error messages again.
I am able to read from my hard drive so believe it's defective but I'm not a technical person so don't know for sure. Has anybody else experienced tis? If so were you able to correct it? and ow did you correct it?
Thx.Thanks to you and all who responded. The majority of responders indicated that the drive was failing. I ran the disk utility again (umpteenth time ) and it said the same thing, nothing was wrong. But I figured the masses couldn't be wrong so I found another External drive to backup to and so far so good. However this happened before as well when after a few weeks it stopped writing to it. So for now all is well and hopefully it will remain this way.
Thx again to all. -
Fix for Mavericks compatibility with Lacie external drives yet?
My last attempt to upgrade to Mavericks caused my 2 Lacie external drives to become unrecognisable to my mac. Update hung up too so I lost everything...luckily I had a third back up with CCC that saved me. Im just wondering if there is a fix for this now. I got no information or help from Lacie.
Exactly the same here. Installed Mavericks and La Cie no longer shows in Finder and Time Machine reminds me that no back up has taken place. As an iMac newbie where do I go from here. In my Win PC days I always backed up to an external HD on a scheduled basis without this sort of problem.

Step by Step Guide needed for external drives.... Help!
I know this has probably been done to death already but I can't seem to make any of the suggestions work in this case. I guess what I need is someone to tell me like I'm a 5 year old on how to do this.
I want to move my music library to an external drive as my main drive is getting full. I have iTunes on my c: drive and want to move my music to an external drive (h:) so it can play and be stored there. I have tried a couple of times to move it and tell iTunes where to find it but for some reason a couple of things happen...
1. iTunes changes the location back to the c: drive, even after I have pointed it to a folder created on the external drive.
2. if it does look to the external drive it doesn't find the library... the music is there but iTunes doesn't display it in the library.
I must be doing something really wrong or this isn't possible... any advice would be a great help. You might find this article useful: iLounge - Transferring your iTunes Library to Another Drive

Updating from and external drive
What do I have to do to sync up my iPod to an external drive? I have changed the iPod music folder location in the Advanced tab of Preferences. But it is still not doing it. Can anyone help?
Yes, I did that and deleted my original iTunes folder
Sadly, that is exactly what you are NOT supposed to do.
You should delete ONLY the iTunes music folder, which is inside the iTunes folder, as noted in step 13 of the link above.
"13. After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder."
The iTunes folder needs to stay where it is. -
.....ie we have Seagate external drives but both have Windows files on them, although plenty of room. Am I able to keep the Windows files on them and back up to them with Time Machine on new MacBook Pro? Don't understand....and not very clear. Thanks
BelindaBelinda,
In order to use Time Machine the external volume must be formatted in Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can't use a drive that is formatted to be used for both a Mac and a Windows unit (exFAT, etc.). You should purchase a new external drive to use with Time Machine and never let your work go for over a week with hooking up to the TM drive and allow Time Machine to do it's thing.

All external Drives stopped mounting after repair disk permissions
My 2.3 GhzPPC G5 10.4.11 was running a bit slow so I ran repair disk permissions and now none of my external drives will mount, can't see them in disk utility either.
Drives work fine on my macbook pro.
I've searched for help but no luck..
Thanks for any advice...Neil, you really should repair the disk before repairing permissions.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Need Small External Drive for 700MHz G3 iBook
My wife has an 700MHz G3 iBook 14" with 30GB HD.
Long ago she outgrew the size of the hard drive.
After twice replacing the logic board I'm reluctant
to put any more money in the computer itself but
would like to expand her storage. She'd love to use
one of the smaller pocket drives but after trying out
the Fantom Titanium Mini I realize the iBook's older
USB ports are a stumbling block (it wouldn't provide
enough power to operate the external drive). Are
there any other smaller USB or Firewire drives that
would work with her machine? Thanks!I've made my e-mail address visible, Jack, if you would like to e-mail me. (Just click on my name at the left to see my profile.)
I don't know a lot about Wes's family, though, except his parents lived in Gothenburg, Nebraska, and that's where he and his siblings were raised. He is the eldest, and is in his 70's. -
OS X Mavericks (10.9)- Ejecting external drives taking too long
So ever since I upgraded from 10.8.5 to the 10.9 GM any external hard disk or flash drive take too long to eject (~10 s). I'm sure it's not the drives because I've tested the same one on different Mac mini on 10.9 but it ejects within a second or two. I've tried USB 2.0, 3.0 and Thunderbolt drives. Is anyone having this issue and does anyone know how to fix it? I would rather avoid having to do a clean install. I'm using a mid 2012 MBA.
In my case the results of EtreCheck

Airport Extreme N 7.1.1 Firmware Update and Acomdata External Drive
I updated the firmware and things went fine. I plugged my harddrive into the basestation and powered it on. I opened the Airport Utility Disk Utility and saw both volumes on the external (partitioned) disk. I have enabled disk sharing, but when I put in the password to mount the drive and click OK, my base station disconnects. Before the firmware update, I couldn't see the drives in the Disk Utility window, so I know I'm heading in the right direction.
I have an AcomData combination USB 2.0/Firewire drive, if that helps. Any ideas?
iMac Core 2 Duo 2Ghz 1gig RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9)I have the same issue. It started today. Though the drive worked up to today.
The moment I connect my AcomData USB2.0/Firewire drive. It immediately disconnects and the status light shows amber and flashes green ever so often.
I called Apple Support and they asked me to bring the AEBS and the drive to the Apple Store.
That's as far as I got, but it is nice to know someone else has this issue.

Need new external drive array- Sonnet or Gtech?
Looking to free up my internals and go with a external RAID.
I have no experience with either one.
Reading descriptions- the Sonnet seems as if it would be the better choice (quiet and faster)
Any feedback is welcomeWell, you have no shortage of choices here.
Some general thoughts:
Connection? USB, FireWire400, FireWire800, eSATA, SCSI, Fibre Channel
USB, FireWire400/800 and eSATA are usually put together as a "combo". You'll probably want FireWire800 or eSATA for the speed.
RAID Type?
JBOD = Just a bunch of discs.
RAID 0 = Stripped such that drives work in pairs for speed.
RAID 1 = Mirrored such that drives work in pairs for redundant backup (what gets written to one gets written to the other)
RAID 5 = Spanning/Parity such that drives work in a group to prevent data loss. If any one drive fails, the data can be rebuild by the RAID controller.

Photo Booth Not Working in Mavericks Updated Needed
Okay, so I am usually a pretty good user and I keep my computer updated and am careful of 3rd party installs. Today, I tried to use Photo Booth and then received the famous error message that many have mention. Photo Booth can't save photos. I really don't feel as though I need to do a completer reinstallation of the OS for one application. Please send out an update to fix the issue.

Previous to Mavericks (10.9 - 10.9.1) I've had no issues with external firewire or thunderbolt connected drives to be put to sleep. However, since Mavericks all of my external drives are not put to sleep when my iMac, or Mac Pro go to sleep.
How can a company such as Apple, pushing people to have external devices like hard drives, is not on top of fixing this issue? Apple pushed for firewire and thunderbolt, thus All external drives I've owned are firewire. Because of speed. I bought thunderbolt adapters for firewire, and before Mavericks all worked great. Now that we have 10.9.1 update, this is still an issue!
I'm aware of the temporary solution of connecting the drive through USB to make it work, this is not a solution, but a hack.
Please let Apple know that this is a known issue, and there should be a fix for it. Everyone's data depends on it! Not only current external backups, but also external sensitive hard drives we rely on. Currently, the following makes are experiencing this issue: Lacie, OWC (Elite Pro), WD, Promise, Seagate, Toshiba, G-Drive.

If anyone finds how to solve this issue, please help by posting the steps or solution.Same 2 issues with 10.9.3:
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down when Mac goes to sleep.
also
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down for inactivity despite “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” is checked in energy saver.
This has been going on since the launch of Mavericks and no solution found yet.
USB ports work normally.
