Mavericks Upgrade Almost Muting Facetime
Hi there,
I love Mavericks and I upgraded the moment it came out. I have had almost no problems with it but one problem which has occurred has been with Facetime.
I'm not sure why, but Facetime now has such a low sound output that I cannot hear anyone without putting on headphones. I'm unsure as to what to do. I had changed absolutely no sound settings or system preferences in any way. But try as I might, when I maximize the volume on Facetime, the output is so low that I simply cannot hear it at all. No one has a problem hearing me on Facetime, but the sound output on my end is almost nonexistent.
Specs: MacBook Pro 15", December 2011, Mavericks OS X, 8GB RAM with Apple SSD installed.
I do have Boom installed and I tried disabling it for Facetime calls, but it made no difference. So I'm not sure what is going on. Any input or feedback would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks.
Yes... Definitely having the same issues... I started a thread on the same and I'm interested to see if you have have any progress.

I hope you get it figured it out..

Safari quits unexpectedly for one user after Mavericks upgrade
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 15" Macbook Pro circa mid-2009
OS X 10.9.4
Safari 7.0.5
After the Mavericks upgrade Safari will always stay open for about 30 seconds before crashing and saying "Safari quit unexpectedly". Furthermore, unless I am looking in the wrong place it is not generating a crash log - I have looked in ~/Library/Logs. I have reset Safari and uninstalled all extensions (had ClickToFlash and Adblock). Using a different account on the same machine Safari runs fine. I have done some googling around but have been unable to resolve this.
Thanks for any help,Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
How to remove Mavericks upgrade
Is there a way to uninstall the Mavericks upgrade? I have read many problems and glitches associated with Mavericks but I particularly find the Dock not opening the first time I click on it very annoying. It's a simple little glitch that is becoming more and more irritating.
I'll try it.

Unstable since Maverick upgrade
Since the Maverick upgrade some programs freeze randomly longer than before. Almost daily the bluetooth will disconnect from iTunes requiring System Prefs > Sound to reconnect. Then shortly after that the iTunes will forget the radio station I was playing. This did not happen before. I now check the Software update often hoping for the cure. A claimed benefit for Maverick is the improved battery use, however I never had battery issues in my MacBook with earlier OS.
Unrelated, the AppleCare Protection Plan can not be bought if the MacBook is older than 3 years - enforced obsolescence? Before Maverick, programs rarely froze unless there was some delay in downloading data from the internet such as when launching Chrome etc.

Cant surf web after maverick upgrade
Cant surf with Mozilla or Safari after maverick upgrade. I have a regular macbook 2009ish model with 4gb of ram. 60gb of free hard drive space.
Went from snow leapord to 10.6 to Maverick 10.8
Have valid I.P. address, hooked directly to modem to no avail.
Other laptop macbook pro works.
Any suggestions?I'm having the same issue with Safari and Google Chrome. Some web pages open really fast while others just hang up and park itself. It's almost a mirror image of the iMessage experience I was having prior to the ios 7 7.0.3 release. Safari is also not loading web pages on my Ipad either. Some sites it will. Some sites it won't. I've changed my Airport Express settings to us Google DNS as well and it didn't matter. Frustrating.

Massive Battery Drain After Mavericks Upgrade on 11" 2013 MacBook Air?
I got my Air about month before Mavericks came out and the battery life was amazing on it. I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App, along with Power Point and MS Word. After the upgrade to Mavericks, it was slow but I started to notice that my battery life during classes was draining so much faster than before and I had not added anything 3rd party software, just the upgrade. I am now down to about 3.5 - 4.5 hours of battery life doing about the same things as before the upgrade. I did a couple of apps and I added (Sims 3 game). However, I have yet to touch it because of the diminished battery life.
I have included a copy of my Etrecheck, can somone take a look and let me know if you think I need to clean something off?
I did do the SMC reset and that seemed to to give a little juice (like putting new tire on your car but still not where it was before the Mavericks upgrade) as I am up to about 6 hours of battery life after the SMC reset.
Please let me know what other information you might need from me that would help and thank you so much!!

Not sure why but I had a hard time finding all of the related files to get rid of Origin. But I think I finally got them. I just uninstalled Flash and Chrome. I don't like Safari but all well. I suppose I can deal with it it until Apple fixes this battery issue and then maybe I can go back to Chrome. Safari isn't too happy with certain websites, under the Preferences/Security there is an error message that reads "Google Safe Browsing Service Is Not Available. Has not been updated in 8 days."
Haven't noticed a change in battery since doing all of this so let me know if it will take a couple of days to reset. Or if you see anything else that I can do to help. Thank!

After Aple support downloaded the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade on my MacBook Air, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan a document and load the file on to my desktop or document file. (You can see the doc image in the preview but it doesn't save it.) Does anyone know an Apple fix for this or when the fix will be out? After hours of trying reloading, and the usual fixes, etc. Apple told me to call HP, and HP told me they don't support Mac. It does not seem honorable of Apple to put out an upgrade and not tell people it will destroy their scanning ability, and that the only thing to do is to buy another printer/scanner.
Have you tried using Applications/Image Capture to scan.
Vuescan often works.

Lost all my photos in a guest account after Mavericks upgrade!! Retrievable?
Did the mavericks upgrade last night and I remember having to logout on the guest account and a window popped up that said I would lose all files if I logged out ..
I did not realize that meant all photos in Iphoto...
It was to be a long upgrade so I went to bed ..
This am ,I logged in my admin. acct and everything seemed to be in place including photos..
I logged in to the guest account and opened iphoto and was shocked to see there were no albums or photos there..
I did NOT do a back-up prior to the upgrade ,,,my BAD!!
Is it possible to recover the photos????
If so,could it be explained in total layman's terminology..
Thanks in advance for reading and hopefully helping>>As you have discovered, the guest account doesn't save files, which is how it is designed to work. To make the library accessible from the guest account, you can move the library to the hard drive level User/Shared folder (see next post), which will make it accessible by all accounts. You will then need to tell iPhoto where to look for the library.
From iPhoto help.
Move your iPhoto library to a new location
You can move your entire iPhoto library to a different computer, a hard disk, or another location on your computer.
Important: Before you move your iPhoto library, it’s a good idea to back it up to a DVD or external hard disk.

Move your iPhoto library
If you’ve created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. To move a different library, you first need to switch to it.
Quit iPhoto.
In the Finder, choose your home folder (it’s usually named after you).
Open the Pictures folder (in the home folder) to locate the iPhoto Library file.
Drag the iPhoto Library file to a new location on your computer.
Open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, select the library you want, and then click Choose. -
Display Profile No Longer recognized in Final Cut Pro After Mavericks Upgrade
I have a 27" 3.4 GHz I7 imac. and an Apple 30" Cinema Display After the Mavericks upgrade my viewer window suddenly has completely crushed blacks and is extremely dark. Projects previously exported out look perfect in both Quicktime and Preview. I can export a project and it looks fine, just terrible in FCP. It seems that it is related to my calibrated display profiles. FCP will not recognize them now under Mavericks and worked fine with Lion. Switching to the generic imac or cinema display profile will hold after the change and make the viewer look normal. I downloaded FCP 10.1 didn't fix it. Any ideas why this is happening now?
After researching this quite a bit and seeing this Very very dark video in FCP X viewer. I was able to fix the problem by building a matrix based profile. This problem dated back to the first FCP release for some, but I never experienced it until updating to Mavericks. It seems that Mavericks is the problem, since nothing changed with FCP. I read somewhere else that another color calibration software tool was having an issue that Maverick's broke LUT (Look Up Table's} I'm surprised that I am not seeing more photographer's/videographers with this issue. It may just be that those that are using calibration don't have softaware that builds LUT profiles by default.

Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion deletes all user accounts
This is a lesson for upgrading too early (and too eagerly).
Today I tried the Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion on my 2007 Macbook Pro, after going through all the pre-installation/pre-upgrade checklists.
I don't think I have gone from a very high to a down low in such a short space of time. I really wanted to move on from Mountain Lion and when the installer finished the upgrade to Mavericks and re-started my MBP, I was super excited. When the restart completed and I was presented with the login prompt, I tried entering my user name and password. First time, it shaked on the password... OK, you'd think that is a typo. Re-entering the password... same thing.
You can imagine what ensued. After entering my password v-e-r-y slowly many times, I started realising that something went very VERY wrong.
Just for information, I used two different user accounts on my MBP under Mountain Lion. The one account had administrative priviledges and was only used for installing applications and a few other administrative tasks. Then I have a second personal account, which does not have administrative priviledges and is the account I use daily for Mail, Safari, iTunes, programming etc.
None of those accounts worked under Mountain Lion. Basically, there is no way in.
I then proceeded to boot with the startup option Cmd + S (command-line access). Once that was completed, I was in as root and checked the /etc/passwd. None of the user accounts were there. I was only able to find two user accounts: root and nobody; and a long list of user account that started with an underscore (I think these are some sort of esoteric user accounts). So, it appears that the Mavericks upgrade did not accurately bring over the user account information from my Mountail Lion installation.
Then, I went into the /Users directory and there I could see the home directories for all the users as they were defined under Mountain Lion. The contents were intact too.
It seems to me that the Mavericks upgrade from my Mountain Lion forgot to bring over the user accounts but it did preserve the contents of all the users' home directories.
Unless anyone can spot some sort of user error here (please let me know), I am heading back to Mountain Lion pretty swiftly. Otherwise, I suspect there is a bug in the Mavericks installer.
Any assistance is appreciated. The reason this occurred is a mystery and has not been commonly reported. Consider the following. It may or may not help. You should probably print these instructions before proceeding.
Boot Single User mode again and do the following:
(You can skip the first step. It will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can. If there were errors the installer should not have proceeded, but the possibility exists that directory corruption may have occurred during installation. That seems unlikely to me but could explain what went wrong.)
In Single User Mode:
At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
Type reboot and press Enter. -
i was going to upgrade from 10.6.8 to mavericks 10.9.2, but the installer program notified me stating my appleworks 6 app will not run on the new set up. is there a procedure to keep or switch my documents in order to obtain the mavericks upgrade?
I can't say personally since I never used AW, but see if these articles help:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1166370/open_old_docs.html
http://www.cultofmac.com/248546/convert-system-os-9-appleworks-6-files-to-os-x-p ages-files-os-x-tips/
I suggest that you clone your current drive with 10.6.8 to an external drive. If you have any issues after upgrading to Mavericks, you can boot back into 10.6.8.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone. If you need help creating your clone, let us know.

How to restore missing fonts after Mavericks upgrade
If your fonts are not working in Pages and other software after a Mavericks 'upgrade', it might be that you still have them, and simply need to turn them back on...
1. Go to Font Book
2. Find the failing fonts.
3. If they are marked 'Off' then right click them and highlight 'Enable Fonts' option.
Hope this helps!
Dan
FWIW Mavericks has wasted DAYS of my time this week... it disabled fonts, made my WD HDD incompatible, trashed Time Machine and lost my Google Drive folder, so my files don't sync etc. There's a very old thread about this for CS2. Domingo Chavez listed the required fonts and where they belong for that version, and even posted them for others to download and replace. I don't know if the collection has changed, but judging from my system I think not, so it would be worth trying the older files. As always, back up first..
Start reading at http://forums.adobe.com/message/1308262#1308262 where you'll see the lists, and a bit further down you should find the links to where the files were posted. The first link is to a.rar archive, further down is a link to a slightly freindlier .zip version. What the heck, here's that link, which still seems to be active: http://public.newrandom.com/Reqrd.zip
But read the thread, anyway, so you understand what's up. -
I have an old Mac with OS x 10.5.8 how do I upgrade to support Facetime
I have an old Mac with OS X 10.5.8, can I upgrade to support FaceTime? Thanks
KDam,
Please allow me to make a suggestion -- I looked on the Skype site regarding system requirements for Osx.
Accordingly, they list 10.5 as an acceptible operating system for their application. In your case I would seriously consider Skype over FaceTime. I don't think it's worth all the effort to go through the headaches such an upgrade can cause, just to be able to use FT.
