Mavericks upgrade forced iCloud. iCloud deleted Calendars & data.

I do not use iCloud. Here is what happened when I upgraded to Mavericks.
Backed up computer (thank God!)
Downloaded/installed Mavericks
Installation required Apple sign-in, which signed into iCloud
Changed System Preferences after installation to disable iCloud (for Calendar, etc.)
iCloud deleted Calendar, etc. data from computer... Gone from the computer. No option to keep my data.
If I sign back into iCloud (to get my data back!) It again deletes when I turn off iCloud...
I did not choose to use iCloud, merely upgraded to Mavericks and was forced to sign in. My data was deleted from the computer. My data, my computer.
Question:
Without restoring image backup (SuperDuper) or finding/restoring everything in Time Machine, how might I get my (kidnapped) data back from iCloud then turn iCloud off non-destructively?
I love many things Apple, but iCloud has cast a huge shadow over my love of Apple.

...and yes, I know that if I re-enable iCloud (God forbid!) that I could File->Export->Export all the Calendars, Reminders, Contacts, (hope I get everything)..... But I shouldn't have to export my own data from a single computer to protect it from an upgrade-required "feature".
So I'm hoping for an option to keep my data without having to protect myself from an upgrade...

  • After Mavericks upgrade, I disabled iCloud / iCal connection. Now I can't make any changes to my calendar

I had multiple bad experiences with my iPhone using iCloud and when I upgraded, realized too late, that my computer was now going to be tied to the Cloud. After I recovered from the stress-induced, post-tramatic syndrome from my iPhone / iCloud experience, and verifying that I would not lose all my calendar entries, I disabled the Calendar connection for iCloud in System Preferences. Checked around iCal and nothing looked amiss.
Then I went to schedule a new event. Right click, the New Event window pops up and before I have the opportunity to type, a window pops up with this message: "There was an error saving calendar data. Calendar encountered a critical error while saving to the database, and recent changes may be lost. More information may be available in the console."
And left in my calendar is an entry called "New Event" that I cannot edit (I've tried using the menu as well as clicking). I tried deleting the event with this window popping up: "You can't change events in the "Home" calendar. Only the calendar administrator and any delegates with permission can make changes to read-only calendars. To make changes to the calendar, contact the calendar administrator."
Me, I'm the calendar administrator and sole owner & user of this computer. Theoretically, "Home" should be me, not, as I suspect, some evil remnant of the Cloud sticking around to haunt me.
Question #1 ??? How do I fix this without connecting to iCloud again
Question #2 What is the console and where do I find the information referenced?
Question #3 How do I make myself the administrator, especially when I thought I already was the administrator?
    Thank you.
I'm on a MacBook Pro OSX Version 10.9.2

Nevermind. After digging around some more in the Support community, I tried restarting my computer. Problem solved. After the mess iCloud made of my iPhone, it didn't occur to me that the fix would be something so simple for my computer.

  • After Mavericks upgrade, apps using iCloud hang

I had earlier posted in the iWork forum about issues using Pages etc after Mavericks upgrade
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5618268?tstart=90
However, the problem is more general.   It seems that any app that uses iCloud to store data or documents hangs when trying to reference iCloud.
Not all iCloud services are broken, just apps storing data and documents.  For example, Safari bookmarks are still syncing fine over iCloud.  I can go to my iPhone and see my current tabs all listed.
However, any app that references iCloud data storage becomes unresponding.  This includes TextEdit, iWork suite, Pixelmator, and others.
When I go into the System Preferences, and choose iCloud and look at the  "Documents & Data" it is checked on but clicking "options" lists NO apps in the list of apps that store data in iCloud.   I have turned this back on and off without change.  I have also reinstalled both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0.1 and nothing changes here.  I have also reinstalled Mavericks (on top of existing) multiple times without any change in this setting.
If I go to manage my iCloud account for Documents & Data I can see apps listed (OS X and iOS) and existing documents that are in my iCloud storage, so the iCloud account is active and working and I can "manage" it from my Mac.
This is a MacPro3,1 and has 10.9 and all updates that have come out since.  It was upgraded from 10.8.4 and that was upgraded (with intermediate 10.8.x) from 10.7.x which had been upgraded from 10.6.x) etc.

The suggestion by Linc Davis here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5028839?start=15&tstart=0) fixed the issue for me.

  • Archive/delete calendar dates to create space

I am running out of room on my Z22 and have been trying to free up some space.  It seems I have calendar dates on there from 1970's and beyond.  Can I archive these or delete them and keep the last couple of years on my Palm?  I found the Purge option but the longest setting is 1 month and I go back frequently to previous dates.
    Thanks for any help!!
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

If you don't have any information before 2005 then it's not taking up any memory. You would need to change it instead to another date. Example June 2007.  The thirty years of Calendar space is always going to be there but again, it doesn't use up any memory unless there is appointments sced. Only your data uses up memory. I thought you were saying you had data (events) back to 1970.

  • Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion deletes all user accounts

This is a lesson for upgrading too early (and too eagerly).
Today I tried the Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion on my 2007 Macbook Pro, after going through all the pre-installation/pre-upgrade checklists.
I don't think I have gone from a very high to a down low in such a short space of time.  I really wanted to move on from Mountain Lion and when the installer finished the upgrade to Mavericks and re-started my MBP, I was super excited.  When the restart completed and I was presented with the login prompt, I tried entering my user name and password.  First time, it shaked on the password... OK, you'd think that is a typo.  Re-entering the password... same thing.
You can imagine what ensued.  After entering my password v-e-r-y slowly many times, I started realising that something went very VERY wrong.
Just for information, I used two different user accounts on my MBP under Mountain Lion.  The one account had administrative priviledges and was only used for installing applications and a few other administrative tasks.  Then I have a second personal account, which does not have administrative priviledges and is the account I use daily for Mail, Safari, iTunes, programming etc.
None of those accounts worked under Mountain Lion.  Basically, there is no way in.
I then proceeded to boot with the startup option Cmd + S (command-line access).  Once that was completed, I was in as root and checked the /etc/passwd.  None of the user accounts were there.  I was only able to find two user accounts: root and nobody; and a long list of user account that started with an underscore (I think these are some sort of esoteric user accounts).  So, it appears that the Mavericks upgrade did not accurately bring over the user account information from my Mountail Lion installation.
Then, I went into the /Users directory and there I could see the home directories for all the users as they were defined under Mountain Lion.  The contents were intact too.
It seems to me that the Mavericks upgrade from my Mountain Lion forgot to bring over the user accounts but it did preserve the contents of all the users' home directories.
Unless anyone can spot some sort of user error here (please let me know), I am heading back to Mountain Lion pretty swiftly.  Otherwise, I suspect there is a bug in the Mavericks installer.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

The reason this occurred is a mystery and has not been commonly reported. Consider the following. It may or may not help. You should probably print these instructions before proceeding.
Boot Single User mode again and do the following:
(You can skip the first step. It will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can. If there were errors the installer should not have proceeded, but the possibility exists that directory corruption may have occurred during installation. That seems unlikely to me but could explain what went wrong.)
    In Single User Mode:
At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Will upgrading to windows 10 delete the data from all drives

A notification for upgrade to windows 10 is available for my mentioned notebook. I've never upgraded to a newer version of windows earlier so i wanna be sure if the upgradation would delete all the data from each drive(i.e. windows drive"c" along with D,E and F)) and what is the total amount of NET-DATA(in MB) will be used for Upgrading online..so that i might not run out of data balance during upgradation process. One more thing..currently the windows 10 logo has arrived at the bottom right of my task bar. Do REPLY asap!!!

Always back up your data when upgrading! It will only if you tell it to during setup.  I would not upgrade untill you have backed up important data manually (copy>paste) to another external hard drive.

  • Upgraded to ios 5 deleted all data

    Hi.
My friend wanted me to update his ipod touch 4g to ios 5 and in the process I lost all of the data from his ipod. I backed it up and restored to ipod touch from backup but all of his music, podcasts, and apps/app data is gone. I did not transfer purchaces from the ipod because I did not want his data in my iTunes liobrary.
    Thanks
    Window 7
    Itunes 10.6.3.25

That is correct.  Itunes content is not part of the back at all.
If the apps/music/podcasts/etc were not on the computer then they would be deleted.
Your friend will have to sync with his own computer to get them back or redownload them.

  • Since Mavericks upgrade, Time Capsule stuck deleting old backups ... for days

I have a previous generation 2TB Time Capsule shared by three of us, each with separate accounts.
I know there's not much space left on the Time Capsule and that it's therefore expected that Time Machine would make room by deleting old backups. But my account seems stuck forever on these deletions (for over 72 hours now), while the other two accounts on the Time Capsule are working just fine.
I've been through Pondini's recommendations for (a) patience and (b) finally resetting Time Machine, but on it goes.
Here is the last couple of hours of the log (filtered for this problem).  The entire log for the last 72 hours is too long to post -- but the pattern is the same, with the constant deletions barely making a dent, and sometimes in fact the space available decreases.
I'd cheerfully give up on the oldest backups, but meanwhile it's been 8 days since TC has been able to complete a backup.  (I have been cloning the drive daily with SuperDuper just to make sure I have a fallback until this is figured out.)
Hoping one of you can recommend a course of action.
Thanks in advance for any help...

  • Maverick upgrade forces repurchase

It's one thing to have to buy the application again...but it seems there are still many issues with the new release.
    Has functionality stabilized or improved?
Anybody have updates on App Store refunds for a secondary purchase?

Server.app 3.1 did fix the SMTP relay port bug in the UI from earlier 3.0.x versions; that now works.
As for whatever you ran into, you're going to have to try it; whether or not it works or not depends on what you're doing with it.
I've been able to get $20 out of it, even with the initial 3.0.0 version.  (Which means I don't know about the refund question.)
As for alternatives for server operating systems, there are various platforms available — I've been prototyping one or two of these, just to see what's available.  You could prototype one or two of those, and see whether they meet your requirements.
For better or for worse, it's been a longstanding local preference to wait for a few updates where that's possible.  This allows Apple time to iron out more of the bugs.    My particular use of OS X Server 10.6 didn't really stabilize until somewhere around 10.6.4 or .5, for instance.   Barring a specific feature requirement, rushing forward with a server isn't always the best course of action — and if you do need a particular feature, consuder scrounging a test server and try out the new configuration there, before rolling the version into production.  This is entirely FWIW, of course.

  • Notes problem after Mavericks upgrade

Notes will not sync after Mavericks upgrade, other apps - mail & contacts & calendar do sync

First check that all your settings are correct, that notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the notes you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone'  or other non iCloud account (you can do this by checking in accounts on an iOS device, or the left side panel in mail on a computer), non iCloud notes will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your notes are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling notes syncing.

  • How can I get missing contacts, notes, calendar dates and reminders that are just on my old iphone onto the iCloud for transfer to my new iPhone upgrade?

    Dear wise & wondeful people:
How can I get missing contacts, notes, calendar dates and reminders that are just on my old iphone onto the iCloud for transfer to my new iPhone upgrade? Half of my contacts, notes, ect. were on my iCloud so have happily moved to my new iPhone but the rest are completely resistant. For example, on my iCloud I have 14 missing contacts starting with the letter A alone, however they are happily viewable on my old iPhone 4S and won't budge over into the iCloud.
There are also 3 notes missing yet still acessible on my onld iPhone 4S, the list goes on.
Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you so much.

  • Windows 8 Upgrade and now can't access ICloud contacts or calendar

I just updated to Windows 8 and now I can't access my ICloud contacts or calendar in Outlook.  Tells me "The set of folders cannot be opened. The information store could not be opened. Any suggestions or fixes?

Try temporarily recreating the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then use the password for your current ID to sign out of the account on your Mac (even if it prompts you for the password for the old ID).  If you can sign out, choose Delete at all of the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), then go back and change your ID back to the new email address again and sign in with it on your Mac.

  • When i try to set  up iCloud, it deletes all my calendar info. why is this happening and how to fix it?

When I try to set up iCloud, it deletes all my calendar info.  Why, and how to prevent deletion of important info when setting up iCloud?

When you set up icloud and turn on calendar syncing, you get a panel that asks whether to merge the local data on the device or computer with icloud data.  You must have responded NO.  If the calendars are now gone from your mac, then your only hope is to restore the data from your Time Machine backup.

  • Will iCloud mail and calendar sync still work after upgrade to iCloud drive?

on my imac and ipad i was asked to upgrade iCloud to iCloud drive. will my iCloud mail and calendar still work on my iphone 4 with iOS 7 after i choose to upgrade?

Yes.  iCloud Drive doesn't effect synced data such as calendars, contacts, notes, etc.  It also has nothing to do with iCloud email accounts.
