Mavericks upgrade...lost my 2nd monitor

Need help. Just upgraded to Mavericks. I've been using a 2nd 23" Cinema Display w/o problems with my MacBookPro. After the upgrade, the 2nd display only shows the background and tool bar at the top. No desktop icons, no Dock, and the cursor is also gone. Is this a common problem? What can I do to get the 2nd display to behave as the Principal display?  Thanks

Duh...had to enable "Mirror displays".....all is well.  Sorry to have bothered you folks.

  • 10.9.4 Maverick Upgrade - Issue with multiple monitors

I have just upgraded to Maverick and there seems to be a problem with my second monitor now going to a black screen every time I use the mouse or scroll up and down a page. Is there a fix for this? Any help would be appreciated as it is very annoying.

This is being discussed in a number of threads - unfortunately there is no single thread, but this one is most recent: Second display problem with 10.9.4
(More unfortunately, there is no fix and Apple generally hasn't been giving a scheiß about the issue since it first cropped up in 10.9.3...)

  • Hung Mavericks upgrade lost all users

Upgrading my Mini from 10.8.4 hung for about 6 hours with a nearly-full progress bar, so I tried to just quit and restart. That beachballed, so I finally did a force shutdown. When I restarted, I had to walk through the initial setup, creating a new user. I can now only log in as that user - while my other /Users folders are there, I do not see these users on the login screen.

  • External Monitor Not Working after Mavericks upgrade

I just upgraded to Mavericks and my USB external monitor & VGA external monitor is not being recognized.

I just upgraded to Mac 10.9.
My Sony KLV-32S300A LCD HDMI TV is no longer recognized as external display (neither in mirror nor in 2nd window mode).
External display used to work flawlessly under Mac 10.8.5.
My hardware: MacBook 13-inch, aluminum, late 2008.
So far I have found no workarounds.

  • How does Mavericks handle 2nd monitor differently?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, I have liked having a 2nd task bar on my 2nd monitor.
But I haven't figured out how it decides where to put pop up windows.    Sometimes they are on one monitor, other times on the other.   How does it decide?
And I have one application (SimpleFloatingClock) that used to start up on my 2nd monitor when I reboot, but now starts off on the 1st monitor (where it would boot up when I have to reboot without my 2nd monitor - which in the past has been at the Genius Bar).

I like to have my iTunes on one monitor, but use my iMac's display for other work.   But when the iMac's display is active, I get a window from my iTunes behind my browser (or whatever) that I'm using on my iMac.    I liked it the old way when it popped up in front of my iTunes and could see it.

  • 2nd monitor went black after upgrading on macbook pro

Ive read post; however, i need help with getting 2nd mointor to work.  it was working fine before upgrade but now jsut black. I was hoping there was a new solution to fix this thuderbolt / 2nd monitor thing.  Im not comutuer tec. guy so I was hoping the apple systems where a good plug and play.
    any help out there??
    thanks

My best guess is that you have fried the RAM with static electricity charged up in your body. According to OGELTHORPE a beep on startup is because of no RAM, if when installing you did not do it correctly, you could have fried the RAM, which then your mac will not recognize it. The same with the old RAM, if you tried to re-install it and didn't pull up your sleeve and rest your arm on the inside of the chassis, then it is fried, or if you didn't wear an ESD band and connect it to the the chassis, then it is fried.
Seen as though you can't startup your mac, I can't say to do an AHT, buy some new ram, and start with the lowest one you can, so its cheap for ya use a different company incase is that;) Crucial.com is really good, I got an 8gb upgrade from 2gb. Let me tell you, it's great!
    Reply back;)

  • Lost 2nd monitor

    First off:
    running OS X 10.4.8
    on a: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 900 MHz
    w/ nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
    (nothing fancy)
I recently lost support for my 2nd monitor. No idea what I did. Both monitors work, both cables work, Dr. Belkin adc-dvi works, adc out works, dvi out works. But as soon as I plug in the second monitor, the first one cuts out & only shows the second one. (How does it know?) & Displays Prefs only sees one monitor connected. It won't recognize the second (actually first) monitor.
It seems like I need to allocate more memory to displays, but in OSX it's supposed to be automatic, right? Do I need to do an archive & re-install of the OS? (I HATE THAT: I always lose something.)
This is what I was doing: I had attempted to install more RAM. The RAM didn't work, because even though they were installed in "matched" pairs, they weren't truly matched: Apple had run out of matched pairs, and sold me two same-sized pairs from different manufacturers, one was high density, one was not. That didn't work, of course. But I still had dual monitor support.
The problem only occurred about 2-3 restarts after I had the memory misadventure. So I can't imagine what I did. However, I haven't heard the fan in a while, but I know I checked it's seating, and it's been incredibly cold here. I'll check it again. What else could it be?
I've searched the other threads and none of their problems seem relevant (mostly bad or incompatible card problems). Apologies if I missed something.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, djangosan

    Thanks for the advice.
I reset the nvram and the pram, I pushed the button for the PMU, but out of fear of pushing it twice (does a finger work or do you need to push the button in with, say a pen tip) I'm not sure I pushed it hard enough (will try it again).
Checked the seating of the video card and cables, and the fan (oddly enough, I still haven't heard it kick on yet, though). Ran a test on TechTools & it showed no problems. But it said I needed to update my TechTools, did that and lost its use. (I can't find my original disc with serial numbers, so I'm screwed.)
Hmmm. If I buy a new video card and that doesn't solve the problem, can I return it? I hate to do that to a vendor, but I also don't want to spend $100ish on something I find out I don't need.
    Thoughts?-j

  • Lost video on 2nd monitor after 10.10.3 update

Howdy.  Upgraded my main mac pro to Yosemite 10.10.3 this morning and find that video on a 2nd monitor (verified good) has gone away.  It seems to be a driver issue.  This is with a Radeon 5770.  It is still driving my main monitor without any problem, however, the 2nd is not getting signal and does not show in system profiler.
The monitor and cable/adapter chain has been checked and verified all the way to the card.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Eric.
Thanks for providing the easily accessible link with standard OP information.  I have reset PRAM and undergone all other hardware and software checks.  There is nothing wrong with the cabling, card, or monitor.
I can boot into earlier versions of the OS, going back to 10.5.  ALL except for 10.10.3 produce NTSC video on my Radeon 5770 as a 2nd monitor.  Something about the 10.10.3 update broke the 2nd display.  The problem is specific to 10.10.3 and no other versions of the OS.
I suspect a bug was introduced regarding multiple-display setups (I have 3) with 10.10.3, OR the feature set for multiple displays was changed without notice.  However, I can't seem to find a way to connect to apple support to investigate the issue without paying a service fee for the privilege.  I was really hoping I could get some actual insight into the issue, as I'm familiar with all standard troubleshooting and software issues.  I have, after all, but using Macs since 1987...
    Cheers.

  • When i upgraded to mavericks I lost my microsoft office

I had office :mac 2011 and when I upgraded to Mavericks it lost my connection with my windows which I use the most.  Now it wants me to enter my purchase product key.   I have no idea where that is so now what do I do?

    farmwife wrote:
Thank you this is what I am doing and since I didn't purchase it directly through them they can not get me the code that I need.
Regardless of the means by which you purchased Office, it's Microsoft's product and Microsoft holds the keys to it (literally). Contact them.
Office 365 is a subscription-based product for which recurring fees must be paid. If you find that Microsoft's licensing requirements make their products inconvenient to use, I recommend that you avail yourself of any number of better alternatives. Some are free, others are nearly so.
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($30 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (donation-supported)
Numbers, Keynote, Pages - all free with the purchase of a new Mac, $19.99 otherwise. They are designed to integrate with iCloud and complement their iOS versions, also free with the purchase of an iOS device.
All of them read and write their Microsoft equivalent file formats. They require no license keys nor are recurring fees assessed for their continued use.

  • Help! Upgraded to OSX Mavericks and lost my Photography Portfolio!

Hello. When I upgraded to OSX Mavericks, I lost my complete portfolio, which was saved on the desktop. I have checked, and I don't have a second account saved on my iMac.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Is the Pic being sent ?
If you use the spyglass icon at the right hand end it should open the FIle Transfer window which in turn  should indicate is it was "Sent"  or "Failed".
It may also show a spinning barber shop poll in indicate it is still trying to send  it.
    Edit.
Test dragging my sig pic from here to Messages causes it to be zipped before sending

  • Lost all my photos in a guest account after Mavericks upgrade!! Retrievable?

Did the mavericks upgrade last night and I remember having to logout on the guest account and a window popped up that said I would lose all files if I logged out ..
I did not realize that meant all photos in Iphoto...
It was to be a long upgrade so I went to bed ..
This am ,I logged in my admin. acct and everything seemed to be in place including photos..
I logged in to the guest account and opened iphoto and was shocked to see there were no albums or photos there..
I did NOT do a back-up prior to the upgrade ,,,my BAD!!
Is it possible to recover the photos????
If so,could it be explained in total layman's terminology..
Thanks in advance for reading and hopefully helping>>

As you have discovered, the guest account doesn't save files, which is how it is designed to work. To make the library accessible from the guest account, you can move the library to the hard drive level User/Shared folder (see next post), which will make it accessible by all accounts. You will then need to tell iPhoto where to look for the library.
    From iPhoto help.
Move your iPhoto library to a new location
You can move your entire iPhoto library to a different computer, a hard disk, or another location on your computer.
Important:  Before you move your iPhoto library, it’s a good idea to back it up to a DVD or external hard disk.
    Hide
    Move your iPhoto library
If you’ve created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. To move a different library, you first need to switch to it.
        Quit iPhoto.
In the Finder, choose your home folder (it’s usually named after you).
Open the Pictures folder (in the home folder) to locate the iPhoto Library file.
Drag the iPhoto Library file to a new location on your computer.
    Open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, select the library you want, and then click Choose.

  • Viewer on 2nd Monitor Problem

I just upgraded FCPX to 10.06 and when I show "viewer on 2nd monitor" the image is all screwed up and distorted,  almost like it lost sync.  This has never happened before.  Has anyone had this happen after upgrading FCPx??

I checked the connections. If I output the event viewer to the second monitor then its all correct.  I've found a work around but it's very strange.  I had the second monitor on top of the main monitor in the display preferences for monitor arrangement. When I move the 2nd monitor to the right of the main monitor in the preferences and quit FCPX and re-open FCPX, it then works fine.  I never had this issue before I upgraded to the next version 10.06.  Try putting your 2nd monitor on top of the main monitor (in the display preferences) and then output the Viewer to the 2nd monitor.  Curious if you get the same problem.
