Mavericks video chat - echo, pixelation, robot voice with external monitors

Hello,
we have recently deployed MacMinis with Dell UZ2715H monitors, which have a built in webcam, speakers and microphone.
Speakers and microphone are connected via USB while the video functions are HDMI.
So, the problem is when users try video chats, the audio is just horrendous, either there is a lot of echo/feedback or just robotic screaming.
It seems to be better when headphones get plugged into the monitor, but would like it to work without headphones.
Does the USB connection introduce any sort of audio delay into the system? Or is there a magic input output setting combination?
(I've checked that both system sound in/out and Messages in/out are set the same.)
TIA.

Hi,
It's magic.
In System Preferences > Sound > Input tab set the input device AND the volume.
It should not bounce the indicator bar to the far right (feedback and "motorboating" can occur at this point). If is is pinned to the far right it normally cuts the feed in the app your are using.
In Messages > Preferences > Video section is a drop down that should list the chosen device in System Preferences.
You may have to  change this if there are two or more input choices.
Using two different sound options can introduce strange quirks.
Sometimes there is a delay from one end leading to the Input device  "hearing" your speech coming back from the far end in an apparent echo and the doing the sonar type pinging of that until it effects only dogs. (making your ears bleed on the way of course)
Start with reducing the volume setting in the System Preferences after sorting out choices off device.  (Set the System Preferences part first).
Then launch Messages and try a Video chat.
If they report you are quite you need to increase the System Preferences Input settings.
If they are quiet then they need to increase that setting at their end - try to stay away from using the Master Output volume as this tends to be the cause of being heard back over the connection and causing the feedback.
Unlike iTunes and some other apps there is no volume control in Messages (or iChat before it).
You can only choose the Input and output devices if there are Multiples (in fact the camera one becomes a drop down if there are more then one)
Basically it tends to be a delicate and magical balance  between your settings, their settings and the quirks of the internet causing the odd delay.
In the Video Menu use the Connection Doctor items and using the Stats option during a  Chat.
It should be stable. If it is not, go to the Preferences > Video section and select 500kbps as the speed.
This is fast enough for 4 way chats and can smooth out the variances in very fast connections.
If there are too many variances Messages will try to Buffer.
It drops Frames to do this and at some point this will effect the Audio.
The Buffering has not really changed since 1500kbps was about the max service you could get.
Unfortunately Apple have taken down the AIM test accounts that they used to run.

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Yosemite: Turning off Macbook Pro screen (lid open) with external monitor connected

Here we go again, this worked pre-Yosemite. Now it seems this trick no longer works. After following these steps again the screen on my Macbook Pro now turns on after logging in and opening the clam shell.
Anyone figure out/know a way to turn off the screen on the Macbook Pro with external monitors plugged in? (yes, closing the clam shell–but I'm referring to keeping the clam shell open with the display turned off)
    http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external-monitor-with-your-m acbook-way-better
    To execute in Terminal:
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
    To undo in Terminal:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args
Once you type it into terminal I believe you need to enter your password. I then restart my machine. Now the TRICK is to either restart your machine with the lid already closed (hit restart then slam the lid!) OR turn the machine on for the first time (then quickly slam the lid!) once you are past the login screen you can open the lid.

Has anyone experimented with tip 2 (active corners)?  Perhaps it still works.

  • Using the GT70 with external monitor and lid closed

I wasn't sure where to post this question.
I have several laptops and use external monitors. I close the lid on the laptops and the display continues to work.
On the GT70, the system shuts down. It won't allow me to use the external keyboard and mouse or display the session.
Any suggestions if there is a configuration option to allow the GT70 to continue to function with external monitor and lid closed.

Yup. This is a windows setting. You need to go into your control panel -> power options -> "Choose when the computer sleeps" and "Choose what closing the lid does"
That should solve the problem. I currently have my GT70 hooked up to a 42" TV and I can close the lid and it stays on and the TV continues displaying as well. No problems. =]

  • Mountin Lion has trouble with external monitors

Not so much a question as a shout-out. Since going to Mountain Lion, my pretty new (February this year) MacBook has been having no end of trouble with external monitors. I use it a lot with the clamshell closed with two different external monitors of two different sizes, one at home, one at work. It sometimes thinks the one is the other, or if I unplug the monitor in sleep, when I later open the clamshell, the screen stays black and I have to force a reboot with the power button. Never had these problems with exactly the same set-up in Lion. Sometimes it also refuses to find a connected monitor or projector, I have to pull the dangle and put it in again.

If memory serves, one of the 'flaws' with BM's hardware is that it will not convert on-the-fly.  So if your sequence doesn't match what the TV is accepting, you get black.
For example, my TV will not accept 1080p, only 1080i, so working in a 1080p sequence would produce no image for me as the BM will only output exactly what's in the sequence, it can't convert my 1080p/24 sequence into 1080i/30 for output.
Now I'd expect your TV would have no trouble accepting a 720p signal but, maybe the above data will lead you down a path of investigation.

  • MacBook Pro with external monitor and keyboard.

    Hello, everyone.
I've tried to find the answer for this question but haven't found a clear answer with my Google search.
My older Powerbook G4 will not allow me to work with an external monitor and keyboard with the screen in a closed position. I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro and would like to be able to use it at home with a larger monitor and keyboard but with the lid closed and its built-in screen turned off. Can this be done ?
How can a MacBook Pro be used (turned-on) with external monitor and keyboard while the lid is closed and the its screen is off ?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
    Joseph

    Hi Niel,
I have the same problem with my MacBook and I followed the instructions you posted. My issue is that when the computer wakes up after clicking the buttons on the keyboard it then quickly goes back to sleep. I can't seem to keep it awake when the lid is closed. I've been searching for an answer without any luck. Any idea how to solve this problem?
    Thanks!
P.S. After I finished posting this message I figured out my problem. While fiddling with my computer and monitor, I inadvertently disconnected the power. After reconnecting the power, I was able to wake my computer and keep it awake. A note to other people having this issue: the computer must be connected to a power outlet to run in closed mode.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

  • W530 (primary) with external monitor which stutters video, help?

So I connected my w530 to an external monitor. When my w530 is the primary display, video I play on the external monitor stutters (very choppy). However, when I make the external monitor my primary display, then there is NO lag. There is a clear difference. What's wrong?

    Hi, Poonti
Have you checked your video settings in BIOS? If not, then I would recommend doing so to make sure that this issue is not being caused by a setting.
To enter the BIOS, turn on the machine and tap Enter repeatedly. Do this until a meny appears with a list of options. Press F1 to enter the BIOS. Once in here, navigate to Config ► Display and see what the setting for the Graphics device is. Try setting it to Switchable if not already set at that.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • Streaming video with external monitor

I'm having an odd problem using an external monitor with my Macbook Air: I have the Air hooked up to my LCD TV, works like a charm. I like to watch streaming TV from various free online sites, and for some reason I can only get about 10 minutes' worth before my internet connection is lost. Literallly, my Air appears to be kicked off of my Airport network. If I unplug the external monitor, within a couple of seconds the video starts streaming normally again.
    Anybody know what's going on?

Sounds like you could be having the core shutdown problems others have been reporting using an external monitor and video. If you search this forum you'll find several threads but I don't think there is a solution. Some have suggested the program coolbook.
    Regards-Michael G.

Starting today, my MacBook Pro started crashing with the below panic report. It appears to only happen when I connect external monitors to the Thunderbolt port. I've been using multiple monitors for the last 6 months without issue.
    Thanks in advance.

  • [solved] ThinkPad connect with extern Monitor Problem

    Hello community
I have installed arch on my T420 integrated HD 3000 and i have the Problem that when i start arch and the boot messages comes i can see the deamon starts ok,ok,ok who should be on the right side but on the NEC they was displayed 5 cm inside. Also when iam on the console and i type dmesg all the output scroll down and broke 5 cm from the roof. And when iam on openbox and i will maximize one window it would be maximized on the size from the Laptop LCD.
    I have made an .xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#xrandr --output DP2 --auto --output LVDS --right-of LVDS
    #xrandr --output DP1 --auto --output LVDS --auto --same-as DP1
    xrandr -d DP2 -s 1900x1200
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    and here is my Xorg.0.log

    @trilby
i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900
i hope i explained it well.
    @anoknusa
i change your config to this
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x900 --rotate normal --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
when i start firefox it was displayes well on my external but when i opened xterm or thunar pcman i have to open my laptop and move from it up to the external do i make a mistake?
anoknusa wrote:I stuck that in a script to run when I start X; if the external monitor isn't plugged in, only the laptop display is used.  This sets each screen to act as a seperate display; I can still drag windows between them if I wish, as well as assign windows to open on one screen or the other through DWM's configuration file.  As mentioned earlier, this is also the only way (I think) to get each screen to display at its native resolution.  Note that I specify the resolution for both my T520 LCD and my external monitor, and specify their positions (my external is mounted to the wall above my desk, directly above my laptop); change those as necessary.
what has xrandr to look like for my external monitor and laptop?
and what would the script look like for me?
    external 1920x1200
    T420 1600x900
and thank you for your patience and have a nice day
ps: i know iam very close to find a solution for my problem

  • Strange issue with external monitor, only working when external speakers plugged in (using Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor)

Hey – I am having a very strange issue with my external monitor; where it only works if my external speakers are plugged in and connected.
I am using a late 2011 Macbook pro, running Mavericks 10.9.4, along with an MBox 2 (USB Audio Interface), and two powered speakers (KRK Rokit 5). This setup has had no issues. I have just acquired an external monitor (Benq T2200HD), which I am using with a thunderbolt to VGA adaptor (a cheap Chinese knockoff adaptor).
To start - I plugged the monitor in with the thunderbolt adaptor, and it powers up and works fine. However, there is a nasty buzz coming from the speakers. I did some research and it looks like a simple ground loop issue. I did a bit of troubleshooting, and this is where things get weird.
What I found is - If I unplug the MBox, the monitor loses signal from the computer (displaying ‘No Signal Detected!’). Further, if I keep the MBox plugged in, however unplug both the cables from the MBox to the speakers, the monitor loses signal. It doesn’t matter if the speakers are turned off, however they need to be plugged in (or the monitor loses signal). Weirder still, I can unplug the MBox, however the monitor will work if I plug in the speakers through my macs headphone jack.
Simply put, the monitor only works if there is a direct connection between the computer, the speakers, and the power source.  What is going on here? Is the monitor grounding through the computer port, to the speakers (I don’t know how this works, is this possible?). Could it somehow be the cheap VGA adaptor I am using?
    Some other information:
    - Everything is plugged into the same multi-box for power. I have tried plugging things into separate sources, and the result is the same.
    - If I unplug the thunderbolt adaptor, then the speaker noise disappears straight away.
    - The ground noise doesn’t appear in my headphones, which are plugged into the MBox.
Any information would be great – am I missing something here, or is this genuinely weird?

Well, I went back into Best Buy to test on 3 other laptops (2 Asus, and their floor model for this Sony). It seems to be doing the same problem so at least I was able to rule out broken hardware issue on my particular laptop.
Here's what I did to test:
Since I couldn't really install Adobe Premiere on their machines, I used the DVIO software (http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm) and a 5 min clip I captured.  I transferred onto their machines, hooked up my Sony D8, and attempted to play the video.  It would play for 15 seconds and then stop and jitter with a loud noise (like it does on my laptop).  I even tried changing each machine's firewire driver to the legacy one and same results.  I pulled a brand new 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable off their shelf and still the same problem.
I think I've nailed it down to Win7x64 bit Home Edition not playing nice with Firewire driver.  Very annoying.  I can't find any concrete evidence of this from other users on any of the forums that have my particular problem, but from my own testing, it's all I can conclude.
I have 2 other things I can try:
    1.  Opening the laptop and looking at the firewire to maybe find appropriate driver (ugh, I don't want to have to open this thing up).
    2.  Upgrading to Win7x64bit Pro and possibly testing with XP on the new MS Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/).  I can't do it with my Home edition apparantly.
Who needs to view video on an external TV anyways....sheeesh...(scarcasm).

  • XFree86 in Laptop with external monitor (Solved)

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100, and my problem is that it's lcd display backlight bulb is not working.
Is it possible to configure xFree86 to work in my laptop with an external monitor? I have tried
to configure it but failed in getting it working. All I could get is an image full of mad green, white
and black pixels. My external monitor is an AOC CT720g 17" CRT monitor.
Sorry for my late response I was enjoying my vacations.
I install xorg and xfce, it runs smoothly. The problem was
    XFree86.
Thanks in advance for your help,
                                                Nautivus

Well you're right it works with the "FN + F8" switch in Windows.
So now I know it is a hardware switch. I will try configuring it as
my only monitor and with XORG. My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce2 GO.
How I can configure it so I can use the hardware switch to alternate
    from one monitor to another?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nautivus
