Mavericks + w8[EFI] + ubuntu[EFI] + data(ntfs) (no bootcamp/mbr)

Hi all...
I'm on an MBP early 2011 w/ EFI 2.7
I have a 1TB ssd. As subject what I'm trying to achieve is to have 4 partitions:
- 300 Gb - mavericks
- 300 Gb - windows 8 w/ EFI boot (I know 8.1 isn't supported yet, so I will upgrade when it will be)
- 20 Gb - ubuntu 13.10 w/ EFI boot (don't really need a swap partition, but if I get a stable efi solution... why not?)
- rest of the free space (about 380Gb) data partition (ntfs because every SO can read/write to it)
I don't want to use bootcamp because of the hybrid MBR and the related problems.
I came from a lion + win7 + ubuntu + data solution (followed this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd0NFTfejTs)
but I don't like this solution because I can't see the ubuntu partition from windows and resizing partition could be very dangerous.
In addition I wish to gain full access to the lightspeed boot time that a W8 with EFI boot can have.
I need windows for gaming and working, so no parallels vmware and so on...
I'll be on vacation until 29th and I hope to resolve the issue before I get back to work (I would hate to follow the above hybrid MBR solution again)
I already followed different solutions which all ends up with "cannot update boot configuration" (even when I sleep... every nightmare I do ends with that box) and did almost 30 windows installations following all the voodoo recipes found in this forum and others (paragon ntfs, bootcamp, format all, create partition for windows, let windows create its partition, install from bootcamp USB, install from DVD)
please help... I'm quite desperate (I think my neighbours too, because of the suddenly screaming and beating on each failed installation)
p.s. I don't know if it's the right section because I don't want to use bootcamp, but since it's a partitioning question...
p.p.s. is really so bad the EFI drivers support? (i heard about BSOD, no audio, no webcam etc...)

this is my EFI/Microsoft/boot ls output

anyway I tryied to reinstall windows 8.1 and it gave me an error about failing to get the /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi size.
I "forced" it to boot through rEFInd (with the old installation boot files) and after the "spinning points" under the w8 logo i get black/blank screen.
I tried to let it doing its stuff for about 20 minutes but then I rebooted.
After that I tryied to log in in safe mode w/ net support (f8 -> 5) but it say "I can't complete installation in safe mode".
So it looks like it's trying to display something through the ATI card without having the drivers (only a guess...)
I heard about people with same problem deleting drivers or so if I'm not wrong...

  • I downloaded OS X Maverick and all of my data is gone, photos, iTunes, etc

I just updated to OS X Maverick and all of my data on my laptop is gone. Photos, I tunes, everything.  How do I get it back?

If no recent backups, shutdown the computer and take it to a local PC/Mac tech that does data recovery, they likely also can fix your problem.
Hardware problems, take it into Apple.

To back up your data, either use Target Disk Mode and a cable from another Mac (which mounts your problem Mac as an external disk of the other Mac) and Disk Utility on that other Mac, or — and this is all assuming you either have a slow Internet connection and don't want to use Internet Recovery, or if you have an older Mac that doesn't support Internet Recovery — you can create a bootable USB key disk on another Mac and then boot your problematic Mac from that keydisk, then use Disk Utility from the installer to make a backup to another (external) (scratch) disk.  You can also use that keydisk to reinstall OS X, to repair or to reinstall OS X.

  • How to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel)?

I would like to have Snow Leopard, Mavericks with built-in recovery, and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on my iMac (Intel).  Is this possible?  If so, how?  Currently, I have Snow Leopard and Windows 7 (Bootcamp) running on my iMac.  I have enough disk space to split my Snow Leopard partition.  I have read that if I split my Snow Leopard partition, clone my Snow Leopard partition to the new partition, and boot to the new partition, that I may have problems with the Maverick's upgrade because it may not be able to create the recovery parition, or that it may erase the Windows partition, or that it may mess up the Windows boot process.

Simplest is to install Mavs on an ext HD, using FW or TB. I don't do windoze, so can't advise about the Boot Camp and multiple volumes issue. Since there's no Boot Camp, I have four volumes running SL through Mavs.

    Risolto!
Lanciato installazione di windows 8.1, eliminato completamente tutte le partizioni dal disco secondario e creato nuova partizione, a quel punto mi ha permesso di proseguire e completare l'installazione.

  • My iMac 2011 21" Maverick cannot install iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.9

My iMac 21" mid 2011 2.8GHz Ci& 16Gb OSX 10.9.1 has started to run 'hot'. Even then freshly rebooted, the top left hand side of the computer (with the screen facing you) gets rather warm (very hot if you actually use the computer). I beleive this to be the location where power supply is located.
    I have tried:
    1) resetting the SMC (shutting down and removing the power cable - over night).
    2) resetting PRAM
    3) vacuuming out the vents to remove possible 'fluff' and dust.
    4) threatening it with a hammer...
None of these actions has worked.
I rummaged about on the support forums and notice that there are a few firmware updates that might be worth installing - just to remove firmware bugs as a potential contributing factor. The available updates were - my iMac is running SMC version 1.71f22 and there is a 1.9 version, and an upgrade to the Radeon 6770M graphics Firmware to 3.0.
However the requirements on the web site http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1498 state that I need to be running Lion... I have mavericks installed and the installer alerts with "This software is not supported on your system" when I am cheeky enough to try installing the firmware.
Can anyone please adivse on how to install these firmware updates - without having to downgrade to Lion?
    Many thanks.

I have just checked the MBA (and an old MBP) and they both have the right versions.
    e.g.
    MBA
    Boot ROM Version:          MBA61.0099.B04
    SMC Version (system):          2.13f7
And the MBP 7,1 Mid 2010 (pimped a bit with 8Gb Ram and a SSD)
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP71.0039.B0E
    SMC Version (system):          1.62f7
So everything looks sweet! Silly me for thinking that Apple had over looked this.
Thanks to everyone for their help in clearing up my misunderstanding.

  • Mavericks has deleted all my data!

    Hi,

how? I have the same problem but did backup my MBP this morning at my time machine. should i restore my whole MPB from the time machine?

  • Reminders app in Mavericks refuses to show iCloud data

I have had Reminders data on iPhone 5, iPad 2 and a 2009 MacBook for a good while... since Reminders first came out (iOS 6 / Mountain Lion I think?!?). All devices happily keeping in sync via the same iCloud account.
Now I've purchased a new MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mavericks 10.9).
I have setup iCloud to use the same AppleID as the other devices. Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Safari bookmarks/tabs and various app documents and data all seem to sync perfectly well, but I have an issue with Reminders.
In iCloud in System Preferences it claims to have been enabled for sync'ing. But on launching the app on the MacBook Pro, no window is displayed. There is a faint outline of a Reminders window, but its totally transparrent, and no data is displayed.
If I turn off Reminders data syncing in System Preferences > iCloud, I am then able to launch Reminders and I see a Reminders window. As soon as I re-enable Reminders syncing via iCloud in System preferences the window refuses to display.
I have taken a look at the Console, and can see the following info.
I'm pretty sure there is some 'data issue' that is causing Reminders on the MacBook Pro to fail to display, but I've no idea how to trackthe data down / fix/edit it. Also, the data (all of it) shows fine on the other devices (including the MacBook which is also running Mavericks 10.9).
    Anyone seen similar?
Any pointers on where to look?

  • Mavericks Migration Assistant - Migrate user data to a separate user drive?

I have a question about upgrading to Mavericks with a separate user drive that I haven't been able to find an answer to, so I thought I'd ask for some guidance before actually trying to attempt it.
I have a late-model Macbook Pro (A1260) running 10.8.5 happily with 2 hard drives inside - a smaller SSD boot drive let's call BOOT 1 DRIVE, and a larger drive I use for my user folder which I'll call USER DRIVE. Now it's time to upgrade to a little larger SSD let's call BOOT 2 DRIVE. I have Mavericks already freshly installed on it (10.9.1) with a temporary blank user account. The MBP boots fine into the drive connected externally so I know it's all ready to go - all I have to do is swap out the drives and I'm good on the OS.
Now the tricky part: I want to transfer my user data from my old system 10.8.5 to the new 10.9.1 and ultimately have it reside in the same fashion - on the larger USER DRIVE. How do I do this?  A few scenarios I ponder:
    A)  I'm assuming because this is migrating from an older system to newer system, you can't just create a new user in 10.9.1 with the same user name and point it to the existing home folder in USER DRIVE, but instead have to use Migration Assistant to transfer and update 10.8 user data to 10.9 user data?
    B) Locially, you would boot into BOOT 2 DRIVE (10.9.1), and use Migration Assistant to transfer user data from the old 10.8 system (the system knows that the user data resides on USER DRIVE) to the new one but there's not enough space on the new BOOT 2 DRIVE to house all the data and even if it could, then what ? - transfer the user folder directly to a clean USER DRIVE and then point to it?
    C) I have both BOOT 1 DRIVE and USER DRIVE cloned on separate volumes, so I could boot into BOOT 2 DRIVE, wipe clean USER DRIVE, and then migrate from the cloned drives - except in Migration Assistant, it says to transfer from "another Mac or Time Machine, or a startup disk".  Would I be able to pull from the USER DRIVE CLONE and then have Migration Assistant write to the freshly wiped USER DRIVE?
Perhaps I'm overthinking this? Google pointed me to this post which seems to have some of this information covered even though it feels dated.  Reading through it makes me believe that Senario A is actually my closest bet with some user account name swapping or something? Is it that User data doesn't need to be "updated" for the newer OS and you can just create a new user account with the same name and point it to the older USER DRIVE?
Any advice from the mac smarts out there would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    SOLVED!
In case anyone stumbles upon this and is wondering what I did:
My hypothesis was correct - waaayyyy over thinking it.
I installed BOOT 2 DRIVE, swapping out the old BOOT 1 DRIVE. Then I renamed the new account to the same name as my previous account, users -> advanced options -> and pointed to the same home folder on USER DRIVE.
    DONE
Initially, I made a new account and screwed things up a bit - after reading the post of the above, understood that the new user account should have the same UID as the previous one....
Anyway, all good now - happy camper.

  • Efi installation of windows 8 in BootCamp on MBA

Could anyone tell me whether the ability to install Windows 8 in EFI mode in BootCamp will/could be enabled on other Apple laptops?
Is that possible, via an EFI update maybe? Is that likely?
I'm eager to have more than 4 partitions on my retina MBP :-)
    Thanks.

mende1 thanks for the reply and for the welcome :-)
I too have tried EFI booting Windows 8 but that isn't the point of my post.
It seems that EFI booting Windows is fully supported in the new MBA's - even using BootCamp!
Many people have trouble-free installations made this way.
It seems the MBA is the first to support this fully and I was wondering whether this ability can be given to other laptops in the range. I would very much prefer it this way (no nasty hybrid mbr).
I thought maybe a firmware update could do it, though I have no idea whether Apple would do such a thing.

  • Vimeo audio stutters in Safari 7 (Mavericks), Flash Player up to date, plug-ins are switched ON, extensions switched OFF.

Noticing this problem recently, guessing it has been occurring since the update to Mavericks.
Video from Vimeo is streaming fine but the audio stutters from the beginning and never improves.
As the title suggests, I have ensured that my Flash Player is up to date, I have switched off the new Safari feature which will turn off plug-ins to save power (so the plug-ins are allowed to run immediately on my system) and I have switched off all Safari extensions.
I have found a number of threads in the communities but no solutions so far.
    No problems with YouTube audio.
And no problems with Firefox or Chrome - audio is flawless. It is a Safari-issue.
    Anybody got any ideas?

    1. System Preferences > Other/ Flash Player > Advanced >  Delete  All
         Press the "Delete All" button
         Install Adobe Flash Player.
        http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
        Follow the prompts.
        Quit Safari.
        Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
    2.  Allow  Plug-ins
        Safari > Preferences > Security
        Internet Plug-ins >  "Allow  plug-ins"
        Enable it.
Press " Manage Website Settings" button for more options.

  • Format Problems on Triple Boot: OSX, NTFS Data, NTFS windows

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel with the 200Gb 7200RPM OEM drive.
I want to have three partitions on the drive, an OSX, and two NTFS drives one for windows system and one for data. I will be getting "NTFS for Mac" by paragon. I want the data drive to be NTFS so I can use Windows SyncToy to synchronize the data between my desktop PC and the Mac.
I used terminal to get the drive partitioned with the OSX and two MS-DOS Fat 32 drives. Windows installed and reformatted the last drive (in the drive list so bootcamp is happy) into NTFS which is 51GB. (I had to use a MS-DOS boot disk to set the last drive to active for windows to install.)
The Problem is Windows sees the 90GB data drive and can access it, but when I try to reformat it to NTFS it gets to 99 or 100% and then Errors with "Format failed"
I used Disk Utility in OSX (booted) to write Zeros to the data drive as some research said that might be the issue, but still the data drive will not take a reformat to NTFS. I also tried to use the WinXP install disk and its format utility but with a copy of windows on the machine there appears to be no option to format the data drive.
    Any Ideas?

I found this article helpful, you have to modify the process somewhat but it did work: http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/TripleBoot_viaBootCamp
One side effect is that a TimeCapsule will not back up a NTFS partition. I have reverted to two JHFS partitions one for 10.6, one for Data, and a NTFS for Widows.

  • Permissions when migrating data NTFS

I have successfully migrated data from an old file server to a new file server. The file server will be commissioned soon pending an incremental ROBOCOPY.
All data was migrated and from my spot check, all NTFS permissions are consistent.
Are there any tools/techniques to further give me the assurance that all NTFS permissions are consistent with all the files and folders migrated?
I have also included a robocopy line used as fyi
    robocopy \\pfdfs01\d$\data\d-drive d:\data /ZB /E /COPYALL /TEE /NP /R:1 /W:1 /LOG:c:\temp\filecopy\d-drive.log
    Vijay

    Hi,
In additional to Robocopy, you could also use File Server Migration Toolkit to migrate NTFS permissions. For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

  • Did mavericks os update deletes old data? and boot camp 7win OS?

have sepereted my data in bootcamp os7 and mac os. if i updates mavericks, will i lost my partation and hole data?

No. An update only happens on the volume you select that has your OS X installation. Same with an upgrade.
Now, if you erase the drive or repartition the drive prior to updating/upgrading, then you could lose everything.
Always make a backup first, then you don't have to worry about losing anything. This is the best advice you will ever receive.

  • RAID 0 for Data on a Bootcamp setup?

I have a MacPro 5,1 running 10.8.5 along with Windows 7 through Bootcamp.  Each of the operating systems is on its own separate SSD.  I also have a conventional hard drive installed for data; the data drive has a GUID partition for OS X data and an NTFS partition for Windows data.  I have another available hard drive and I was wondering if I could install this second drive, set up the two conventional drives as a RAID 0 (for speed) with a GUID partition and an NTFS partition.  Since the drives will be installed in the MacPro drive bays, this would be a software RAID.  Can this be done with both operating systems?  Can I set it up using one of the OS's and have it recognized by the other, or would I have to set up the RAID twice, once in OS X and again in Windows?  Has anybody tried this or will I be the first?
    TIA,
    Dennis

I would say the Windows PC would be your best bet but the odds of recovering anything at all is still extreme poor even there.
The way RAID 0 works is a bit like dealing cards. When you start a new hand in a card game the dealer deal a card to each player in turn. In the case of RAID 0 the computer is the dealer and the disks are the players.
So what you are attempting to do is undeal the hand. Now while that may sound trival, it is in fact not. Hence on of the reason that everyone says RAID Arrays should always be backed up.
