Mavericks won't auto capitalize "I" on system level.

Hi there. I just upgraded to a new machine and installed Mavericks on it. My issue is that while typing, Mavericks won't auto capitalize the letter "I" even with the "Correct Spelling Automatically" and text replacement options enabled. I am NOT using Pages. This is happening on any text box. It also seems that "I'm" will sometimes auto correct and sometimes not. I know it's a minor annoyance, but any help would be appreciated.

Ditto here! Notes app, Mail app, basically any app will not capitalise "i", even when writing this message!!! OS X also does not capitalise the "i" in "i'm", or "i've"
Can any OS X experts out there offer any suggestions. A work-around i've done was to create a shortcut in the keyboard settings so that when i type "ii" it will auto convert to an "I", its just that i sometimes forget and have to go through my whole document correcting any and all "i"'s. I also need to do the same with "i'm" and "I've". Very annoying.
Many thanks

  • Mavericks won't install on newest mac mini fusion drive

I have a mac mini, latest version.  I have a fusion drive.
Mavericks won't install on that drive.  I get this message:
This disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the Disk, choose the
partition tab, select the volume Scheme and then click Options.
Well, I did that, up to "choose the partition tab."  Then it says "you may only split this partition into two. To do this, click +."
I did that, and there were two partitions.  the only option left is to select apply, which I didn't.
The "options" were still greyed out.
    So now what?
    Thanks for any input.

Lion creates a recovery area with a minimal version of OS X and it may be unable to do so due to use over the years, and possibly other resizing operations (Boot Camp).  It could just need more space, if you only have less than 8gb free.  Lion shuffles and merges the two systems when it upgrades.  You can burn the image downloaded from App Store by finding the dmg file inside the "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" bundle, dragging it into disk utility, then burning from there.
Otherwise, you can appropriate a MBR/BIOS formatted 4GB thumbdrive, 8GB of either EFI or MBR/BIOS thumbdrive, flash storage device, or external hard drive, and format it, using the restore operation through disk utility to copy the contents of the installer disk to the media.  Exposed via the alt key before the Apple logo, should show the bootable media, where you can format over the former installation.
As always, backup your files when upgrading.  I recommend if your installion is over a year old to wipe and upgrade if you can't make otherwise the media bootable, using your 10.6 recovery dvd.
If you cannot find an external medium to backup your files before the upgrade, if you need to format via disk utility (Through 10.6 media), you can consider Dropbox as an option (2GB free account).
It's not uncommon for the partition to simply refuse operations, including upgrades and resizing.

  • How do I stop auto-capitalization?

I have seen threads where people are complaining about auto-capitalization in certain applications. For me, it does it system-wide, all applications.
I have gone to Edit > Spelling and Grammar and unchecked all options. It doesn't matter what I do, it ALWAYS auto-capitalizes the first word after a Return. Doesn't matter if I am in Pages, Evernote, TextEdit, whatever.
I also went to System Preferences>Keyboard>Text and unchecked "Correct spelling automatically. Didn't fix the problem.
Anyone have a fix for this issue?
    Gary

Thank pmiles. I found that TextExpander was the culprit. I've had it installed for about a year but it just started doing this recently. Anyway, I found the preference option that had been turned on. Fixed it and it's all good now. Thanks again.

  • Mail - Auto capitalize first word in each sentence

When composing a message in mail is there a way to turn on auto capitalization for the word beginning each sentence?

As far as I can tell you cant auto capitalize the first word of each sentence. I did however find out how to turn "i" into "I in case that is bugging you as well
    Go into System Preferences
    Click on Language and Text
Choose the "Text" box on the menu bar
It will bring you to the text substitution thingamajig where you can replace "i" with an "I". Once done it will work on Mail as well as most applications system wide.
    Hope that helps a little

  • Mavericks won't connect to UPS

    New iMac.
Mavericks won't recognize Power Inspired VIS1000B ups - 'UPS' option does not appear in Energy Saver preferences pane.
Tried calling Apple support, no knowledge available .....

How about just contact support at the UPS manufacturer - http://www.powerinspired.com/vis1000b-1kva-sine-wave-ups-system-p-1781.html
They claim to provide software for that model for Windows, Unix, Linux and OS X, so it may be an instance where you actually need to use their tools instead of the default OS X facilities.

  • OSX Mavericks won't boot after changing user home folder

    Hi guys,
I have a clean install of Mavericks on my macbook pro 17" and have two drives in. One is hdd (in place of superdrive) and the other is ssd where OSX is installed.
    I have uset the following:
If you right-click on the User in the Users & Groups system preferences, choose "Advanced Options..."
You can then change the location of the home folder
to change location of my user home folder and set it up to be on the hdd but now OSX Mavericks won't boot. I get the progress bar on boot and it just freezes no matter how long I left it.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks!

I managed to boot after dozen tries and restored the location of the home folder to where it was at the first place.
The thing is, on my second drive I have the whole user folder with data, settings and everything else in it and would really like to use it in the Mavericks.
I guess I could just copy it over the one in the Mavericks and it should be good?
Not sure, why this is the issue now since on previous OSX releases this home folder changing thing worked without problems :/
If anyone else have the solution for this problem please do feel free to let me know!
    Thanks!

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
For more on gray screen, see > Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • My Macbook Pro won't auto delete old TM files

    Hi..
My power cord has been trying to go out on me for a few weeks and tonight it just went capooey
If there's a power issue on your Mac, it's doubtful uninstalling and reinstalling software will make any difference.
    Try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
If the adapter is ok, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Why doesn't iOS/OSX auto-capitalize "Chinese"?

So I just happened to notice this recently and was curious why this was so.  Apparently iOS/OSx doesn't auto capitalize Chinese as it does every other nationality/ethnicity, anybody know why? Just curious.

    Interesting.
Whilst I would describe myself as ignorant on the matter I have the perception that all Chinese characters appear the same height. (that being the most telling difference in western/roman characters).
My daughter visited China  in 2008  and took pictures of street signs and the like but I would not say I could spot any difference.
Is capitalization just something we in the west (as it were) do in Translation ?

  • IMac with Mavericks won't recognize new 60D

iMac with Mavericks won't recognize new 60D

No drivers are required on the Mac to use the camera.  The Mac will natively recongize the camera.
You can install Canon's supplemental software or you can use the Apple provided software or 3rd party software.
However... when you connect a camera to a Mac and it recognizes the camera, you *can* configure what you want the computer to launch.  By default, a Mac will usually launch iPhoto.
If you open iPhoto (do this EVEN if you don't want to use iPhoto) then go into iPhoto -> Preferences and look at the "General" category.  You'll see an option that reads:  "Connecting camera opens:" with a selection menu next to it.  You can use that menu to pick what you want your Mac to do, then close and quite iPhoto.
When connecting the camera to the computer, do the following:
    Turn the camera off
Use the supplied USB cord to attach the camera to the computer (some caveats here... I'll mention them below).
Power the camera on after it's attached.
About those caveats on step 2.
The reason I say "use the supplied USB cord" instead of use any USB cord is because if you're like me... you've got LOTS of USB cords laying around.  Some of these come with devices that use USB for charging purposes.  And some of those USB cables ONLY bother to wire the power supply pins and not the data transfer pins.  In other words... it looks like a normal cable, but wont actually allow for data transfer.   You will need to take care to make sure you're using a proper cable.
Next I should caveat the use of USB hubs.  Whenever you're having a problem with a computer not recognizing a USB device, it's a good idea to disconnect extraneous USB devices that have nothing to do with your issue AND if there's a USB "hub" involved... bypass the hub and connect the camera directly to a USB port on the computer itself.
I use a USB hub and this particular hub is reliable... but truthfully I had to buy three different hubs before I found one that worked reliably.  I've discovered there are a lot of flakey hubs on the market.  When in doubt... bypass the hub.  If you find that you can get your computer to recognize your camera on a consistent basis if you bypass the hub then you can direct your attention to finding a reliable hub.
That's the end of the caveats.
I wrote a response to a user with a similar issue in which I detail the steps to use the Mac's System Information utility to determine if the camera is showing up as connected to the camera.  You can find that post here:

  • Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use.  Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits  syncing only by iCloud.  Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes.  I don't want to use iCloud.  Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

  • How do I enable "auto-capitalization" on Pages 5.2?

I'm still used to Microsoft Word which would capitalize for me, at the beginnings of sentences, proper nouns, etc. Pages must have have it, right?

The auto-capitalization feature still does not exist in Pages as of v5.2. It does exist in Pages ’09 v4.3, a prior release, that if you had it installed, the Pages v5 install would have moved it to /Applications/iWork ’09 folder.
The freeware Devon Technologies WordServices Service suite of tools has a feature that for all selected text, it will perform the auto-capitalization feature for you. This does work in Pages v5.2. Its either Pages ’09, the shift key after full stop punctuation, or the WordServices tool. For now.
