Mavericks won't start after reboot, just getting circular icon seems like forever.

Hello,
Did a shutdown in the evening, and when restarted I just get the circular icon under the grey apple. Tried PRAM reset. Tried Option-retart.
Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
     a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 3
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 4
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 7
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.

  • EM Personal Edition Won't start After Reboot

...I installed Oracle 10g on a WinServer 2003 machine. EM worked fine after installation of Personal Edition; after reboot, EM service won't start. Everything else works; I can even query the HR tablespace from Access and SQL Server. I've set the correct user roles on the SYS, SYSMAN, SYSDBA, etc. accounts.
I also noticed that after the reboot, the folder that was previously called:
    OC4J_DBConsole__ORABETA35
    Is now called:
    OC4J_DBConsole_192.168.2.18_ORABETA35
...but when I try to start the service from the services snapin it looks for the previous folder. So I copied the new folder into another folder and renamed that to the previous name to see if that would work; it didn't.
    thanx,
    John Bonifas

There's also a checkbox in the dropbox preferences for starting on system boot.

  • Intermittently a Gadget or two won't start after reboot.

I have 4 gadgets running on my Windows 7 desktop.
Calendar, Clock, CPU/Memory Dashboard and Wunderground.
About once or twice a week when I power the machine on in the morning
or even after a normal reboot (not a crash) at a seemingly random
pattern one or two of these gadgets won't start. If I merely logout of my
Windows 7 desktop and signin again they invaribly all start up.
I would be very surprised if this was a hardware issue so I am curious if
    anyone else sees this behavior.
The only thing that might be a little out of usual for my config is I don't
require a login to access my desktop. Windows 7 automatically logs me
    in and starts my desktop.
    Any insight appreciated.

What happens when you dont use the Wunderground gadget?Did you try for that scenario?
    Cheers and regards,

  • Oracle E-Business Suite Won't start after reboot.

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle E-Business Suite Version 12.1.1.9 with Oracle Database 1.1.0.7.0 on OEL 5 Update 5. Everything works perfectly after the installation, I am able to log in to the database and log in to the website at http://<hostname>.<domainname>:80nn.
So here is my problem, after I reboot the server and try to log back into the website I get this screen.
    500 Internal Server Error
Servlet error: An exception occurred. The current application deployment descriptors do not allow for including it in this response. Please consult the application log for details.
I know many other people have gotten this issue and I've been trying to debug it for a while but no luck.
Hussein mentions to run the autoconfig on both application and database tier but when I do that it completes with errors.
I even tried running the autoconfig on a newly installed Oracle EBS without rebooting it and the autoconfig still completes with errors.
Also, I looked into the apache log files, I checked the error_log and it says file not found: favicon.ico. So, I added that file but the error_log just doesnt show anymore errors but the website still does not work.
Can I get some more ways of solving this issue? Any help would be awesome.
    Thanks in advance guys.

  • Play book won't start after reboot V2

    Hi there...
Just want to share my experience (a bit of frustration too) with my PB. After I installed the new v2 OS, it asked me to reboot and I pressed the button. The tablet literally locked itself! I could see the glowy  screen but it was dead.
Then, I plugged the charger, again no sign of life. Not even blinking green light. I left it like that for 3 hours, then all of a sudden green light started flashing and the screen went black (or off position). I waited until it is fully charged and then started PB. I took almost 5-7 minutes before icons appeared with new screen.
    Everything was OK after that.
BUT, what a frustration it was. I think BB developers should do something about displaying messages during installation. Don't know what the problem is,  you're left in limbo!
Great machine but it sure is like a woman !!! Treat her like that!

    /t5/Eseries-and-Communicators/E5-won-t-start-after-multitasking-freeze/m-p/840827
The thread looks familiar to me. I just came from Nokia Care Center a while ago and left my Nokia E5-00 phone there with the same problem as everyone else on the thread.
I am from the Philippines and my Nokia E5-00 was made in Korea, sent to Hong Kong, and then sold here in the Philippines. That is a lot of cost saving activities to do.
I previously had my first Nokia E5-00 a week ago, Monday. It felt like I am the happiest man in the Philippines. You know, the "I have a Smartphone!" proud feeling of a young man.
But all excitements turned into saddening experience. My contacts are not accessible from theMenu and the Shortcut (default: right selection key) making it inconvenient to create a message or call a contact.
That was a different issue. So I made my phone replaced and last Sunday, 2 days ago, I had my new Nokia E5-00 unit.
    Yey!
The contacts were good as all other applications were.
Then, I started having problems as everyone else in the thread experienced. The phone had a bad restart habit and it was, in fact, irritating. It was tolerable at first. Not bad for a replacement phone. I was not much bothered with the restarts.
Then, I was able to start utilizing GPS, like I would get lost. It was an amazing experience for someone here in the Philippines. I was proud to have a good working GPS in my phone!
But, unluckily, 30 minutes after the fun. I set my phone to go back to work and WALAH! My phone shuts down after transferring some files. Good thing my Nokia E5-00 finished all transfers before dying out.
It was not quite the Nokia Smartphone I expected. And, that was really disappointing. Thank you im_mobile for the term.
I did not expect to see these much people complaining problem with Nokia E5-00. Same as everyone else experienced.
How should Nokia fix this? I am not in the position to say this, but Nokia should (1) recall these defective Nokia E5-00 products (Thanks magnum_jon) and (2) replace all defective units from unsatisfied customers.
I think Nokia will not get hurt from returned phones. In fact, they will have the benefit of immediately finding out what the problem is and they will be able to fix this immediately if they get all of our defective Nokia E5-00 units. They can (1) isolate the problem, (2) test as many phones as they want, (3) find out the problem and (4) make a happy customer.
These much claims is not tolerable. This is degrading Nokia. I believe Nokia has seen much already, and I am hoping that by the time they read my post, it would be the last.
And the next reply to this thread would be a happy customer with a newly replaced, non-defective, Nokia device.
    Thanks,
    Eljun Pacomios.

  • Won't start after 10.4.11 update

I just updated my OS to 10.4.11 and now my computer won't start up. I get to the Mac OS X screen that says OS X is starting up. Then I logon and then the blue screen and that is as far as I can get.

Likewise here - just updated the wife's imac 17" duo Intel and nothing.
    OSX 10.4
Tried booting up into Safe Mode as per instructions. Cannot even get there.
Held SHIFT (even tried the left and then the right one) but still have the Grey Apple and spinning gear.
Now I'm a Windows user, so I know F8 or bootup with CD gets me into command console, isn't there an Apple equivalent to it?
Obviously Shift doesn't. I read somewhere else holding the Apple key or X does it, but nothing here.

  • Mac Mini won't start after installing OS X 10.6.3

My Mac Mini won't start after installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. When I turn it on, the Apple logo appears and the initialization line starts to fill, but it suddenly stops. It does that again and stops at the same point, but this time it shuts down. What should I do?

If you are coming from 10.5.8, hopefully you backed up your important data first. Your mini will need at minimum, 1 GB of RAM to install Snow Leopard and at least 5 GB of storage remaining on your boot drive.
I treat 10.6.3 as a fresh, full install over a 10.5.8 system. That means I choose Disk Utility from the Installer's menu and repartition the boot drive as a single partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format, and use the GUID partition scheme from the options button. At this point, while still in Disk Utility, I would verify the drive under First Aid.
Then I turn the installer loose, and reboot into a working 10.6.3 system, ready for the software updates that take the machine to 10.6.8.
So, following the above guidelines, reinstall 10.6.3.
