Max-.Aging Time

Hallo
We are experiencing a strange behavior in our LAN, the MAC- Addresses of the Workstations that are connected to LAn but not generating traffic are being deleted from the Mac- Address-Table after 10s although the aging - Time is set to 300 s.
Does anybody have an Idea Why.
Thanks
Ali

Hello,
No it is not, the Network where this problem noticed is more complex and it is a topology where the three layers exists ( Core, distribution and access), the problem where noticed on access switches have redundant links. portfast is being used on ports connected to workstation. It so the the the switch loses the mac-addresses of the stations that are directly connected to it after approx.
15 sec.
Thanks

  • Explanation of "hello-time,forward-time & max-age" in spanning-tree

    Hi,
what is the exact meaning for the following command using in spanning-tree?
    spanning-tree vlan 1-2,5,175,182-205 hello-time 1
    spanning-tree vlan 1-2,5,175,182-205 forward-time 4
    spanning-tree vlan 1-2,5,175,182-205 max-age 6

    Here are the answers:
The Hello Timer triggers periodic ?hello? (actually the Configuration BPDU) messages that are sent
from the Root to other bridges in the network. This timer also sets the interval in which a bridge
expects to hear a hello relayed from its neighboring bridges. Configuration BPDUs are sent every
2 seconds, by default. You can modify the Hello Timer per VLAN with the hello-time keyword,
along with a value of 1 to 10 seconds.
The Forward Delay Timer determines the amount of time a port stays in the Listening state before
moving into the Learning state and how long it stays in the Learning state before moving to the
Forwarding state. You can modify the Forward Delay Timer per VLAN with the forward-time
keyword. The default value is 15 seconds but can be set to a value of 4 to 30 seconds. This timer
should be modified only under careful consideration because the value is dependent upon the
diameter of the network and the propagation of BPDUs across all switches. A value too low allows
loops to form and cripples a network.
The MaxAge Timer specifies a stored BPDU?s lifetime that has been received from a neighboring
switch with a Designated Port. Suppose BPDUs are being received on a non-Designated switch port
every 2 seconds, as expected. Then an indirect failure, or one that doesn?t involve a physical link
going down, occurs that prevents BPDUs from being sent. The receiving switch waits until the Max
Age Timer expires to listen for further BPDUs. If none are received, the non-Designated Port moves
into the Listening state, and the receiving switch generates Configuration BPDUs. This port then
becomes the Designated Port to restore connectivity on the segment.
To modify the Max Age Timer on a per-VLAN basis, use the max-age keyword. The timer value
defaults to 20 seconds but can be set from 6 to 40 seconds.

  • Prolem with Cache-Control:max-age http header

    Hello
It seems that safari do not take into account Cache-Control:max-age=31536000 http header.
Sending this header to the browser I would expect that safari will not ask the server for these resources before current date + one year.
It's the way IE and FireFox are working but safari is asking the server for these resources every time my html page is loaded (see http requests below).
Server returns a 304 status to indicate that the resource is not modified.
Does somebody have an idea about this strange behaviour?
I'm surprise that Safari do not respect RFC specifications.
Is there a settings to enable Cache-Control ?
Perhaps I forgot safari's specific headers..
    Thanks

  • How to add an "age / time counter" into DW?

Can anyone assist on how to add an age / time counter into DW?
In other words to say "Child X is now a years, b months old"? or "Product Z was launched A years B months ago"? Or, on the other hand, "You only have Z days & Y minutes left to enter"? With it updating in real time?
Apologies in advance if this is a silly / obvious question but I just can't seem to do it!

This isn't something you would add to DW, you would need to add it to your webpages. You would do this with javascript. Search the web for
'javascript countdown timer' for plenty of examples.

  • Printer aging-time "best practice"

    Hi,
Our new printers are loosing their ip address'es after some time with no use...
I guess that they are not sending any frames onto the port, and the aging-time on the vlan is kicking in.
And when reading this forum a few suggestions comes up.
Changing aging-time on vlan for printers. (are there any known caveats changing this?)
Static mac address settings on port (we have ~500 printers, so that feels somewhat funky)
How do you guys handle this?
This is a normal port config for our printer ports on a 2960 tc-l  12.2(58)SE1.

If you create a new ASO (remember, this does not work in BSO) database, right click in the outline (okay, the completely blank outline).
You should see a pop up menu with "Create date-time dimension..."
I should also note that you have to click on the word "Outline: dbname" to do this.
I wonder if you are trying to do this in a BSO app as that will make the menu item show up unselected.

  • Aging Time

    Hi,
I would like to ask What is Aging Time and its purpose.
    Thanks,
    Dyep

For the original poster, although Giuseppe provides an excellent description of the MAC aging timer in reference to CAMs, and since you mark his post as resolving your question, I just want to re-emphise in reference to your original question there are multiple aging timers, a couple besides ARP's and CAM's. The principle is generally the same, and such timers might be adjusted for various reasons. (For example, setting ARP and CAM aging timers can make or break unicast flooding.)
    [edit]
I wrote too soon, see you've marked my original post as also resolving your question. BTW: The interplay between ARP and MAC aging timer, and how it can cause unicast flooding, I think, is worth knowing. Ok it looks to me that there are more than 20000 rows in your backend system that have to be fetched.
You can change this limit in the Central Management Console . Login as administrator and go to Servers . Double-click on the Crystal Processign server and change the value in the field Database Records Read When Previewing or Refreshing (0 for unlimited) according to your needs. AFter the change you have to restart the Crystal processing server.

  • Max execution time per pixel causing rendering differences between GPUs

Is there a maximum execution time different graphics cards
will process each pixel as part of the shader? When running the
    Raytracing script (
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&loc=en_us&extid=1634 018
) on my Macbook Pro (256MB ATI Radeon X1600) then many pixels come
out grey or black as the loop per pixel that is tracing the ray
takes longer than some built in execution limit.
I first noticed this with a filter I've been working on which
looks fine on my alu iMac (512MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS) but
rubbish on the Macbook Pro or older iMacs.
Are there ways around this limit like splitting long for or
while loops into smaller chunks, or is it just a hardwired max
    execution time per pixel?

I don't think you can time out on processing an individual
pixel, but I could be wrong. You could try reducing the number of
reflections in the filter and seeing if that fixes the problem. It
could be a math precision difference between the cards.
Shaders can (and will) time out, but individual pixels
shouldn't. It could also be a driver issue with the structure of
the filter. I have a x1600 mac book pro here and I'll try it out if
    I get a chance.

  • Changing Default  "Keep Alive" & " Max Processing Time" values in SMICM

    Dear Experts
As you aware the default values in SMICM --> Go to --> Services The default values "Keep Alive" & " Max Processing Time" of services like HTTP & HTTPS is 30 sec & 60 seconds respectively.
Every times when we restart application server - we are increasing the time values manually. once we restart they will be reset to original 30 & 60 sec respectively.
I want to make customozed values permanently which should not be lost even after restart of application server.
    Please Help
    Regards
    PR

If you have not set the PROCTIMEOUT parameter, TIMEOUT (or icm/keepalive_timeout) defines both the processing timeout and the keepalive timeout. Also, as of release 6.40, the keepalive timeout is limited to a maximum of 30 seconds.
In a system where the default timeout settings of 30 seconds for the keepalive timeout and the processing timeout are not sufficient because of long-running applications, we recommend that you set the TIMEOUT and PROCTIMEOUT parameters for the relevant services so that you can configure them independently of each other. In addition, we recommend that you do not set the TIMEOUT value higher than necessary, for example, to the usual default value of 30 seconds.
We recommend, for example, the following settings:
    icm/server_port_0 = PROT=HTTP,PORT=1080,TIMEOUT=30,PROCTIMEOUT=600
to allow a maximum processing time of 10 minutes.
    Thanks,

  • How Cisco represent Arp entry's aging time in SNMP MIB

    Hi there,
I found : when a laptop roamed between an office and a meeting room and used two different IP addressed in these two places, there are two active IP arp entry in Cisco with different aging time.
Please see the screenshot for "sh ip arp".  My question is how Cisco represent the aging time in SNMP MIB. Is there any cisco proprieatry MIB to represent the aging. I want find the latest arp entry from SNMP. I can't see any useful field in ipNetToMediaEntry, ipNetToPhysicalEntry and cInetNetToMediaEntry.
Not sure if cInetNetToMediaLastUpdated is related, but I have never get any snmpwalk result from this oid yet.
    Liam

This value is not available via SNMP.
This information comes via IP-MIB and the IP-MIB's ipNetToMedia table will just give you the hardware address, network address, associated interface, and entry type (e.g. static, dynamic, etc.).

  • 3850 Port-Securty Aging-Time Issue

    Hello,
we have configured Port-Security on the Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switches on all "access ports" like this:
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1
     switchport mode trunk
     switchport nonegotiate
     switchport port-security
     switchport port-security maximum 50
     switchport port-security aging time 2
     switchport port-security violation restrict
     switchport port-security aging type inactivity
I connect my PC to a mini switche and connect this to the first 3850. Everything is working.
Then I connect my PC to the second 3850 -> there is no connection. This is ok because of the aging time of 2 Minutes.
Then I connect my PC to the third 3850 behind a telephone everything is working.
    After 5 to 10 Minutes I type "show mac address-table address x.x.x" on switch 1 and 3.
    Switch1#sh mac address-table address ecf4.bb01.078b
              Mac Address Table
    Vlan    Mac Address       Type        Ports
    2201    ecf4.bb01.078b    STATIC      Gi3/0/31
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 1
    Switch3#sh mac address-table address ecf4.bb01.078b
              Mac Address Table
    Vlan    Mac Address       Type        Ports
    2201    ecf4.bb01.078b    STATIC      Gi6/0/24
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 1
My MAC-Address isn't aging out. And this means I can't connect to any other Port.
After clearing port-security "clear port-security dynamic addressecf4.bb01.078b" everything is fine.

    Thanks for your reply.
Why shouldn't it work? If I disconnect my PC I have no activity so my mac address should age out.
So if I want to plug it in to another port after the aging time of 2 Minutes my MAC-Address will be learned and I have network connectivity. That's the plan... otherwise I will be locked out.

  • ARP Aging Time

    Hi there,
Just wondering why, when i do show arp, in my WS-C4506, whith Supervisor II+ 1000BaseX, and cat4000-i9k91s-mz.122-25.EWA5.bin, it seems that i have +/- 20 % of arp entrys with the aging time of 0 sec all the time.
I think it should increment that aging time till 300 sec (by default), and then reset, but not all the entries do it.
Any ideias of what kind of "process" is causing it ?
I have all in the vlan1, and the ip's that soffer this issue are hosts and Cisco equipments.
    Thank you in advance.
    Petr?nio

    Friend,
I think you are a little confused with the ARP aging time and the mac-address aging time (also called as CAM table)
The default ARP aging time is 4 hours but the switch hold the CAM table entires only for 5 minutes.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_tech_note09186a00807347ab.shtml#troubleshoot
A permanent ARP entry does not have any timer assoiciated with it and is not shown as "0" but as "-".
The thing which you are seeing is basically the cam is being aged out after 5 mins from the switch and is not incrementing as no frames are being received on the port.
    HTH, rate if it does
