Max amount of smb volumes per client server 10.5.8?

Specs:
server: osx server 10.5.8
clients;
Windows xp pro
Windows 7
Mac osx 10.5.(x)
There are approximately 30 clients.
We are trying to export 9 volumes from the server to the clients listed above.  It seems like we can only mount 6 of the 9 volumes at any given time on each client.  The same symptom is happening on the mac when connecting to the server via smb.  AFP does not exibit this problem.
This problem exists on all client platforms, and is repeatable.
Are there limits on how many volumes that can be exported from osx server to a client at the same time?  If there is a limit, can it be changed?  I can find no documentation that discusses this.
Thanks in advance for your help and time.
Monty Shinn

A log file had filled up and left no free space on the server OS drive.  I had to connect remotely with SSH and move the log to a different hard drive.  This freed up enough space that logging in was successfuly.

    What is the recommended number of clients per Mac server? Also what are some recommended specs when purchasing an Apple machine that will have Mac OS X server installed? We have around 300 clients that need to be enroled on the Mac server. I want to know what is the recommended amount of clients a Mac server should contain. Also what are some recommended specs to make sure the server will flawlessly?

    Hello cpreasbeck,
    Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
    I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.
    Transition Guide Xserve
    http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
    On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.

  • Flash Media Server VOD hardware requirements per client

    Hi I was wondering what the hardware requirements are for VOD
    use of FMS 3 per client.
    What I want to do is to be able to calculate what kind of
    machines would be required to cater an x amount of clients at the
    same time. For example CPU usage per user for a 500 Kbps video is
    40 MHz, memory 100MB etc. or if there is a formula. If I have that
    then I can also calculate the cost per view etc.
    If you have a server with a Gbps connection to a network you
    could cater for 2000 users but then if the memory usage is 100MB
    per user that would not be possible etc.
    Any kind of relative information (even server suggestions)
    would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • AFP client "connection failed 32" - 10.4.7 AD bound client & server

    Please, can anyone help with this?
    Two G5s, clean installed, one as 10.4.7 client, other as 10.4.7 server. Both machines bound to company's MS AD. AD machine logins fine. AD lookups etc all working fine. DNS Forward and Reverse on server fine. Nothing else installed on either machine, no settings meddled with. Bound to AD with default settings.
    Problem: When client attempts to connect to AFP shared volume on the server, message "Connection failed 32" appears. On first attempt after client reboot to connect to the share, the credentials pane appears (Domain, blah...) then, after OKing, the dreaded "Connection failed 32" message appears. Subsequent attempts to connect during the same session misses out the creds pane and returns only the 32 error message. I've looked up Apple's error codes but 32 doesn't exist.
    Any non-AD bound client on the same network can connect to the same share fine via AFP, even LDAP clients using their AD creds.
    I'd just config all the clients for LDAP to get round this but there are several reasons why that's a no no (mostly company security policy). It's either get all Macs fully AD bound or take them off the network.
    Kerberos is used. Is this problem related to that? Sorry but I'm not a Mac or Networking Guru so I don't know which logs etc. to look at. Any help at all would be most appreciated - can't begin to tell you the hassle this is causing.
    It would be something to find anyone with the same problem at least.
    Thanks.

    A development on this:
    By setting the Authentication method (Server Admin, AFP, Settings, Access) to Standard, rather than Kerberos or Any, clients can now mount the share OK, and still using their AD user credentials rather than a server local account.
    Not sure what the security implications for this method are. Or is that just a red herring anyway? As long as the users are authenticated against our AD (via Kerberos) I'm happy for now.
    Now then, if only Apple's SMB server would allow our PC clients to connect to the Mac shares I'll be fully home and dry. Come on Apple, where is SMB signing? Thursby have it. And don't tell me I can just disable it on the MS AD servers - absolutely no chance of that in a corporate PC network. And please don't tell me I can use DAVE to do the SMB sharing - it handles the signing but slows down AFP access to a crawl when everyone logs in.

  • Client/server vs. Application Server

    Our company has around 30 sites with each one having its own Oracle database server and file server (repository for executables of Forms6i/Reports6i). All the sites have the same applications running, i.e., the same set of programs are replicated to each site. At present we are running the applications in client/server mode (Forms6i/Reports6i runtime is installed on each client machine).
    We are also using some third party modules developed in VB/VC++.
    Now we are looking for the Centralized Solution, i.e., We want to have a Single Database Server available to all the sites all the sites are already linked with Network Leased lines).
    Now we want to know the impact of running centralized file server (located at Corporate Office site) accessible from all the sites (through same client/server mode).
    Will this solution work for us or we should move to 3-tier mode? Please suggest us the best feasible solution which can be implemented as early as possible.
    What I mean to ask in the question above is: if a good intranet connectivity is available among sites, what would be the better approach, client/server or n-tier?
    What actually would we gain by using application server in this context? Does the Data travelling is reduced from Database Server through to the Client Node in 3-tier AS approach? Does this 3-tier approach will reduce the Burden on Leased Lines? Does we gain more network resources available in 3-tier?
    What I think is that in client/server mode, the data is travelled from Database Server to Client Machine, but using Application Server, the Data from Database Server will travel upto Application Server and NOT to the Cleint machine (on browser etc.), hence reducing Network Load.
    Please clarify as your input makes a valuable role in our decision-making.

    Hello,
    I'll take a stab at this one...
    If you have enough network bandwidth, you should be fine funning in client/server mode. I have worked with clients with this same configuration. In addition to having a centralized DB, we have also centralized the forms on a network drive allowing users to access the same files and removing the need for users having to update their files locally. The biggest problem I see with this configuration, as long as you have enough band width, is that your configuration is not supported as 6i has been desupported.
    From my perspective you really don't have any choice but to upgrade your application so that you can be supported. The good news is that for the clients we have worked with upgrades have gone very smoothly. In fact recently we have started to partner with another vendor that has a tool specifically designed to upgrade Oracle Forms and it includes additional features above and beyond what you get from Oracle. This tool has drastically reduced the amount of time to complete upgrades (like going from a 2 year project to just a few weeks).
    I hate to answer this question because it is hard to answer without really getting into the details with you. The good news is once you do have a centralized DB and centralized application maintenance will be significantly easier.
    One last option you might consider that our company has done is to use Citrix. I've never used it for Oracle Forms, but for other client/server applications it has allowed out clients to web enabled their existing applications without changing them at all and also get a boost in performance. I wouldn't recommend this approach to you because what you have should be short term until you get your forms/reports upgraded.
    If you have any specific questions I can try and answer them for you. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

  • Servlet in client/server application?

    hi,
    I am planing to make a client server application( SWING & an OODB), would it be clever to use servlet ( not httpservlet) as midle tier framework?
    If yes , what are the benefits?
    Thanks.

    thanks for responding
    actually my client don't wanna run a separate server application on the hosting machine as it costs too much, so thats why i think there is no other way to achieve the task rather than using servlets.
    please do help me or atleast give me a suggestion. actually i'm developing an internet messenger application. i have developed it using client/server application model in which both (the swing client and the server) uses java sockets to communicate with each other. but now i want to develop the server side of the messenger as servlets. but as far as i know the servlets follow the request/response model. if i follow that model i have to use some sort of client pull after certain amount of time say after five or ten seconds, and this approach does not fulfill my requirements as it would slow the performance if there are hundreds of clients calling the servlet every 5 seconds. thus i want to create persisted connections between the client and the servlet which last for the life time of the user's session. also it is important for the data integrity of the application, so please help me in this matter as i have no other source of guidence in this meany world. i hope you will certainely help me in this matter. please mention that if there are any drawbacks of my approach i mean the persisted connections.
    thanks you a lot
    Best reagrds

  • Any Solutions for DFS, SMB  Volumes for Mac Users

    Hi All,
    We are thinking of setting up X server to manage our growing mac user base. A major question is how or if X server can provide a way of giving mac users network access on par with windows users. In our case- we use Microsoft's DFS (Distributed File System). Apple does not support DFS. We have used AdmitMac so we have had a way of dealing with it.
    With X Server, is there a way I can "reshare" smb volumes from windows servers in a way that would resemble what windows users see?

    Did you figure anything out? I'm interested in doing something similar if you find an answer.

  • Does smb in 10.8 server support NTLMv2?

    Does smb in 10.8 server support NTLMv2? If so, how do I enable it?
    Smb worked just fine in 10.6, but after upgrading to 10.8 its broken when windows machines try and connect. It works if I disable the requirement for NTLMv2 on my windows 7 clients, but that is a very poor solution.
    I tried putting "client ntlmv2 auth = yes" in /var/db/smb.conf but that didn't fix anything.

    Wow.....that's fantastic!  I couldn't understand a word from my supplier before.  Now it works, thanks Tom!

  • Maximum number of domains per physical server

    I am curious as to whether or not there is a maximum number of domains per physical server. Is it just based on resources, i.e. memory, hdd space, etc. or does Oracle have it's own specific recommendations? I realize, as implied, that one could put a number of vm's on a server that would utilize the server ram up to an amount reserved for the OS.
    Just wondering if there is a recommendation.
    By the way, we are running WLS (10.0MP1) and OSB (3.0) on top of Win2K3.
    Thanks for nay info,
    Todd

    Typically it depends on the resources.
    If the WLS instances are heavily utilized, at some point having more JVM's than the number of cores impacts performance if the apps are CPU bound. Similar applies for apps that use a lot of memory or sessions. There is no blanket answer and there is no hard and fast limit.

  • Problem in script mounting volume on VPN-server

    Hi,
    I try to set up the app Chronosync to make a regular backup on a disc volume that is at the University.
    Chronosync can be told to backup at certain times, but the folder/volume needs to be mounted.
    Chronosync can start an applescript to do this automated.
    I made a script that opens the VPN, but I fail to get it to mount the specific volume on the server.
    This is what I have so far:
    tell application "System Events"
              tell current location of network preferences
                        set VPNservice to service "***"  --replace asterix by name of VPN-server
                        set isConnected to connected of current configuration of VPNservice
                        tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to activate
                        if not isConnected then
      connect VPNservice
                                  delay 1
                                  tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to keystroke "******" --replace asterix by password
                                  tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to keystroke return
                        end if
              end tell
    end tell
    This opens the vpn connection, and from there it should be just mounting the personal volume on the university's server.
    Actually it looks fairly simple to do: Finder > Go > connect to server > click smb://***** and off you are.
    But I just don't get this last piece working.
    Help is very welcome!

    I managed to get a step further and have the script working - that is to say in Applescript. But when I start the script in Chronosync it will not perform the second action, mounting the volume.
    Why would that be??
    tell application "System Events"
              tell current location of network preferences
                        set VPNservice to service "VPN***"
                        set isConnected to connected of current configuration of VPNservice
                        tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to activate
                        if not isConnected then
      connect VPNservice
                                  delay 1
                                  tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to keystroke "--password"
                                  tell application "System Events" to tell process VPNservice to keystroke return
                        end if
              end tell
    end tell
    delay 4
    tell application "Finder" to open location "smb://username:password@servername/username"

  • Crashing/Kernel Panic while browsing or saving to an SMB volume on a Mac w/ OS X 10.10.2

    Lengthy topic, but the description says it all.  Does not happen all the time, but is definitely triggered by browsing (via Acrobat 10.x) through an SMB volume to open a file.  Has not happened nearly as often as when after upgrading 10+ users to Mac OS X 10.10.2
    Realize I could be looking at three issues -- Apple, Adobe or (god help me) Micorosoft (considering it's a Win2012 server).  Please help me however you can!

  • Framework for client-server Architecture in Java !!!! With swing

    Hi,
    Considering the scenario where we are having the Client-Server application and the rich clients at the client place , based on the frames.I have though of the logic as :
    Client -----------> ClientComponentframeWorkObject(Genric Objects) ---------> reading the data from the configurable files to find where to take the user action ---------> will call the Servercomponetobject(Generic objects) can be Servlet or just a object which connects to the server(DB).I have been able to find the open-source frame work at the Apache ,all covering the server-side framework so i though of doing some work with the framework covering the client(swing) -server Archetect.Even I dont know how the existing server side framework support the swing client.
    I would appericiate if someone who had worked on the client server requirement with java , could share the knowledge about the framework being used in the existing work.
    regards
    Vicky

    Hi,
    GENERIC CLIENT COMPONENT:
    package com.nst.clientcomp;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    public abstract class ClientComp extends JFrame
      protected JFrame currentframe;
      protected JPanel  panel;
      public ClientComp()
           // To decide if the ClientComp to be Frame or the Panel.
        //panel=this;
        //currentframe=new JFrame();
        panel=new JPanel();
        currentframe=this;
      // Just Concentrate on the GUI , look and feel here .......And the user action will generate
      // generate the event which should call the callNextView()..The component developer have to
      // concentrate on the writing the display() and the callNextView()..
      public abstract void display() ;
      // This is the Final action.Template Pattern being Called
      public String action()
           readServerObj();
           processContent();
           display();
           return null;
       Reading of the value object which is being Passes from the Server.As per the Design it is
       called VOFS and will be read here.Here
       1) Connect to the Server
       2) Pass the VOFC through the socket connection
       3) Also obtain the VOFS(Value object from server)
       In certain application it can be implemented here
      public Object readServerObj()
            System.out.println("Hello from ServerObj!!! Should be implemented ");
            return null;
       Processing the Sever Value Object, which is basically as VOFS.It is processed by the
       Client.And infact the Value object from Client(VOFC) should be generated here for next
       user interaction from the Client.
      public void processContent()
            System.out.println("Hello from processContent !!! Should be implemented ");
      // Clear the Frame
      private void cleanUp()
         currentframe.dispose();
         Contains the place where next view takes.Before this is invoked the cache copy of the
         StateObject should be stored in the appropriate Data Structure......
      public void callNextView(ClientComp com)
            panel.removeAll();
            com.action();
            cleanUp();
    }   COMONENTS AS PER THE FRAMEWORK :
    package com.nst.clientcomp;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Comp1 extends ClientComp implements ActionListener
      JTextField t,t1;
    //Default display , displaying the screen.This should be the abstract method
      public void display()
        JLabel l=new JLabel("UserName");
        t=new JTextField(10);
        JLabel l1=new JLabel("Password");
        t1=new JPasswordField(10);
        t.setText("admin");
        t1.setText("admin");
        JButton b=new JButton("Login");
        b.addActionListener(this);
           panel.add(l);
           panel.add(t);
           panel.add(l1);
           panel.add(t1);
           panel.add(b);
           currentframe.getContentPane().add(panel);
           currentframe.setSize(400,400);
           currentframe.setVisible(true);
      public static void main(String ar[]) throws Exception
           ClientComp c1 = (ClientComp)(Class.forName(ar[0])).newInstance();
           c1.action();
           System.out.println("Hello11");
      public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
           //Do someprocessing if required
           if(t.getText().equals("admin")&&t1.getText().equals("admin"))
           callNextView(new Comp2());
           else
            System.out.println("invalid login");
    } Similarly you can develop the other components and you have to take care of the display() and the user action Event which eventually calls the callNextView.I hope there might be the cases where this has been implemented ..
