Max brightness on start up

I've had my iMac for a couple of years.
Just recently, every time I start up, the display brightness is maxed all the way up as the default, and I have to turn it back down. So it's not remembering the setting I use.
Very irritating. Any way to fix this?

Sometimes, odd behavior is indicative of other issues; since symptoms
aren't always directly related to the cause. Have you performed any of
the regular or routine maintenance on the system? It may seem like a
redundant question, but if you don't know what I'm talking about, you
probably haven't done most of them which could've prevented this issue.
Sometimes, it may help to boot up using keyboard commands, such as
they are, to reset PRAM and NVRAM. This can flush settings of a few
things in the system, and then they may default to normal again. Or start
the computer up from the OS X install disc and run the Disk Utility version
from there, with the hard disk drive unmounted, to 'repair disk' and also to
'repair disk permissions' - though settings may be related to User account
matters, and preventative maintenance appears to be most helpful.
Start up in SafeBoot mode, run Disk Utility's repair disk permissions;
restart normally. Get and run Titanium Software's OnyX for your OS X
version; run the selection "Automation" with all check-boxed marked.
{Run OnyX utility (note to set its preference to restart the computer by itself
after OnyX runs) and be sure it has plenty of time to do this job.} + If you
have never used SafeBoot, that can take time in and by itself; holding
the Shift key down until you get a login screen, on startup, for starters.
There are Single user mode and also Terminal commands one can learn
to use, to help resolve user account or system-wide issues; but I have
found (so far) to not need to go beneath the GUI in order to prevent issues.
If nothing else works, see if this utility is supported by your computer's OS X:
Shades http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31515
+Also, if your computer has not been updated to the latest step version in the+
+download/update progression, including security updates & java, etc, you+
+may consider making a backup of your computer's contents, and update it all.+
Another possibility, back in the maintenance division, +if nothing else helps+, you
may consider trying a power management reset (system management controller)
to see if that may help get the computer to default to basic values. There may be
a .plist file involved, too, that may simply be removed while in SafeBoot, and then
the computer would re-create the default one on restart or resetting after restart.
However that turns out...
Good luck & happy computing!

  • IOS7 Palattes: Why default to max brightness and battery drain?

After upgrading to iOS7 today my brightness slider was set to its maximum setting. I didn't think anything of it until I reduced it to 1/2 which is where I normally keep it to save on battery. I typically never have to change it even when outdoors. Today I received the surprise of a lifetime: It needs to be at near maximum just to see details like the call status bar. The WHITE text on the BRIGHT green bar is absolutely horrible and near impossible to read. I was hoping that I could change the color scheme of the status bar palettes but no luck. The best I could manage was to change the background wallpaper to a near black color that helped out only a tiny bit. What a waste of Retna display.
I can no longer use product this in an airplane cockpit for flight planning. I will have to abandon my planned purchase of an iPAD mini  with Retna unless I can get iOS 6 on it
In the day light these new white screen backgrounds require loads more brightness to be able to see details and therefore causing unexpected battery drain not to mention creating a hazard of a night blindess (old scheme had dark backgrounds light text instead of other way around)..
    Questions:
    - How do we get rid of the white screens that require max brightness to see detail?
    - How do we get customizable palattes? Customer knows better than Apple -- my eyesight can't handle white text and bright backgrounds for status bars.
    - Will Apple see this as a priority one issue and give us CHOICES on the PALATTE schemes?

    Hello,
I am currently an owner of an Ipod Touch 4th generation.
I have had battery drain problem on the Ipod Touch 4th generation.
But, I found a solution that works for me:
Do the IOS update (the one that is the latest, or if you already did, then proceed to step 2)
Reset All Settings: SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS
Use it until it dies (automatically shuts off)
    Plug into Charge
Leave it 1.5 hours or longer after it reaches 100% --> Undisturbed (preferably overnight)
Give it a few days to Calibrate
This has helped me on my Ipod Touch 4th generation, running IOS 6.0.1
The battery seems to give me 2 days 30 hours of standby, and 10 hours and 15 minutes of usage.
    Thats pretty good!

  • Inconsistent brightness when starting up or waking up

I have noticed that my 8 mos. old MacBook Pro is experiencing some inconsistent display brightness upon starting up or waking up. It appears that the center of the screen (about two inches wide running from top to bottom) is noticeably darker for about 30 secs. to 1 min. and then the brightness level seems to even out across the entire screen.
Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?
    D

This is normal for fluorescent backlighting. Fluorescent lights have a "warm up" period. It will vary slightly from machine to machine... but this is just the way they work, it is not indicative of a problem. New MacBook Pros (15") use LED backlighting which does not have this "warm up" effect.

  • MAX crashes after start-up

Sometimes it's able to accept one mouse-click before it crashes

    Hello,
When you say MAX crashes after start-up, do you mean that you have to reboot your computer? If yes, then try changing setting in the device manager so that it does not automatically reboot after a crash (right-click my computer>properties>advanced>startup and recovery>uncheck automatically reboot).
If not, is it just giving you an error and shutting down MAX? If yes, then what error is it giving you?
Also, what operations did you perform before you started noticing this behavior of MAX? Did you upgrade any software or install any other new software?
Also have you tried reinstalling the software (labview or data acquisition or any other that installed MAX with it)?
Any information would really help me assist you.
    Thank you!
Good luck and have a grea

  • Brightness at Start Up

    I have a new 27' iMac i7.
The issue I have is, everytime I start up, my brightness is all the way up.
I have to adjust it after each start up as it's too bright after start up.
System preferences has no settings for controlling brightness.
    Any information is appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Tom

I've exhausted all of my ideas in trying to solve this Brightness issue, including the Brightness Slider in System Preferences, zapping the PRAM, etc.
The only other problem I've had was with the 70 second start up, but that was resolved when I zapped the PRAM.
I've only done this maybe 3 times since 1984, but it might be time for me to call Apple Care, which I hate doing.

  • Using MAX in transformations / Start Routine

    Hi,
I am trying to use MAX function in an ABAP routine (transformation / Start) and it shows following error -
"Unknown column name "MAX(/BIC/ZQMCOUNT)" until runtime, you cannot specify a field list.". Here is part of my code -
    >>
    data: v_counter(10) type n.
    SELECT MAX(/BIC/ZQMCOUNT)
    INTO v_counter
    FROM /BIC/AZDPM_DS300.
    <<
    Any thoughts please.
    Regards
    Vikash

    Hi there,
Sometimes you have to put some spaces between the parantehsis in the max, min or count, like this:
    data: v_counter(10) type n.
    SELECT MAX( /BIC/ZQMCOUNT )
    INTO v_counter
    FROM /BIC/AZDPM_DS300.
    Can you try that?
    Diogo.

  • Screen at Maximum Brightness after Start

Whenever I start my computer (MacBook Pro, late 2008) since upgrading to Lion the screen brighness is set to maximum. I have turned off the automatic brightness control in preferences. I can set the brightness using the function keys but the setting does not "hold" through a restart. Any ideas?

I have encountered this problem as well. First, you have to download the latest Optimus graphics driver. Then go to add/remove programs and remove all nVidia applications and the Intel graphics driver (don't do anything with device manager). Restart the computer, and then install from that file you downloaded. Restart again and it should be working.
You pretty much have to use Lenovo's drivers since you are running optimus. Never manually update either the Intel or nVidia or you will encounter problems like the brightness control.

  • Serial will not connect unless MAX has been started

    Hello All,
I am using Labview 7.0 , MAX 4.6.0f1, NI-VISA 3.0, Windows XP. A Microchip PIC USB device is attached to the Labview PC, the PIC embedded code registers as a Virtual Serial port and behaves as expected, I use Labview to read and writes simple fames of text.
I found I can communicate ok with the device and need to create a distributable Application, this is where I have found problems. I installed the application on a different machine but I don't see any serial COM x text in the serial drop down list. I was expecting similar function to the device manager which enumerates serial ports on the fly (including the PIC i am using)
Having read a few posts  it looks like I need VISA runtime. I thought I was including this in my application as I selected, Tools > Build Application>Installer Settings> Create Installer X > Advanced > Serial Port Support. The only thing that seems to make the application pick up the serial ports is to run MAX first. I would prefer not to force users (15 to  20) to install MAX and then have the Labview automate a MAX startup when the program is started. This seems a bit clunky.
    Advice appreciated
    Thanks Chris

    Hello Jamie,
Thankyou for the responce, I have tried ( and tried ) to get this to work without success so far.  I downloaded NI visa301full.exe and followed the instructions regarding the batch.bat file however when I finally got the visa install popup to appear it progresses to the progress bar window, the progress bar fills to about 30% for 1 of 16 then removes the progress, waits a few seconds then part fill the progress bar again, and repeats over and over till I cancel. After some reading I noticed the batch file is only needed for multiple exe install so I removed the batch file and have been trying to call the visa301full.exe directly to make things simpler.
I tried manually installing the visa301full.exe and this worked fine, so at least I can see my application and visa301full.exe working together when they are installed. Ive attached my build file as hopefully Ive done something daft there. I think its probably nearly there, I appreciate your help and advice.

  • Processor maxed out when starting RT application in development mode.

When I go to run my RT application on my 8145RT board in development mode, one of my dual-core processors stays maxed out for 2 or 3 minutes.  I added a break-point at the very begining of the code to make sure it was not something related to the execution of my code.  This only happens if I make a change to the code and have to re-download it.
    I am using LabVIEW 2009.
    Any ideas?

I know this behaviour and I think (but I'm not sure) its a bug which is allready reported. Right now I'm out of office and cannot access the DB to check the CARs number, but as soon as I'm back I will check and update you here.

Even though NI-MAX does not open up and giving me errors, I opened up labview and placed a DAQmx reset device VI and connected a constant at its input. The constant does show all the daq cards (connected in my PXI sytem) in the labview.
What does this mean ? Can I continue with the development even though the MAX does not open up ?
Another NI engineer recommended trying to install the NI System Configuration utility (http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/4086/lang/en )
since it does appear that drivers are currently working correctly. This installer includes MAX and a few other utilities but should not affect driver installations.

    Hi Turri,
The error dialog suggests checking out this document: Causes of an "Unexpected Error" from Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), which then points to another document that is more specific to the error message you received NI Software Failure When PAE (Physical Address Extension) is Enabled on Windows Operating Systems. If you try disabling PAE, do you still receive the same error?

  • Ipod touch max brightness no control, hardware or software fault?

My Ipod touch is on maximum brightness all the time, the slider control in settings does not affect it nor does the auto setting, drawback of this is it get through the charge very quickly. is this a hardware or software fault??

Do you have a case that is blocking the top part of the iPod, if not then you may need to take it to the Apple store for repair.

  • Backlight runs at Max-Brightness at boot--how fix?

The backlight on my X220 always runs at maximum setting (which is VERY bright) during boot. Due to my display settings in the OS, the brightness is dropped considerably once I hit the desktop after boot.
But if working in the BIOS and during the boot period, the display Brightness is always running at the excessive maximum level--it is really bright!
Is there some way to change what the Maximum is? Some way to get the Backlight to work at a reduced level by default when booting and working in the BIOS?

Brightness at boot, as well as login, screen lock and screensaver, is handled separately if you have checked the appropriate boxes under "Dynamic Brightness Control" in the tab for global settings in the ThinkVantage Power Manager.
This "second" brightness setting can then be adjusted by simply pressing Fn + Home/End while it is active, that is, during boot and so on.
    <rambling>
This somewhat confusing handling of brightness also applies to the "dimmed" setting that is activated with an idle timer. I have therefore found my screen lighting up after idling for a while. That's confusing, I assure you.
However, this brightness setting is also adjustable in the more logical way with a slider in the TVPM. On the other hand, it is also separate to all power plans...
I would be glad if this djungle (and a few more) was addressed in future updates. Please, this is the opposite of ease of use.
    </rambling>
I hope I solved your problem, if not, feel free to ask me a little less nicely!

  • The sound goes up to max everytime I start my Mac.

    Hi,
Even if I lower the sound on my Mac, when I restart, the sound goes all the way up again ( except the little mac sound at the very beginning ).
Isn't it supposed to stay at the same level as when I shut down my Mac ?

Yes, it is supposed to stay at the same level. Your problem looks very much like the one in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10411145] only the opposite. Maybe you can try deleting the same preference files in Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > Audio. The names of the files to delete are com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
