Max Photos in Library (iPhoto vs Aperture)

I recently upgraded from a 500 GB MacBook Pro to a 3 TB iMac so I could keep my 42,000+ iphoto library (around 287 GB) in tact and have some room to grow.  My one on one advisor said that I should be using Aperture for that size library.  Now, on my iMac my iphoto slide shows no longer play their playlist music.  In Aperture, the same slide show does play it.  The Apple tech guy told me that I had to uncheck the music and reenter the new playlist.  I have over 30 slide shows in iphoto.  It is hard to swallow that I have to ruin the music and reenter to get back to where I start from.  Disappointing.  Does anyone have ideas on Aperture vs iPhoto?

Now, on my iMac my iphoto slide shows no longer play their playlist music.
This iPhoto v9.5 or later?
In iTunes go File -> Library -> Organise Library -> Reorganise Library.
Then quit and restart iPhoto.

  • Cannot import Nikon D800 NEF photos into Preview, iPhoto, or Aperture

My iMac will not display Nikon D800 NEF photos in Preview, iPhoto, or Aperture. Any solutions?

    Need more info.
Most specifically, which OS version are you using? Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto?
From the sound of it, my first guess would be the versions you're running. Nikon D800 gained support in Lion 10.7.4 (Nikon D800E support was added in RAW Compatibility update 3.13 sometime last year).
If you're running versions earlier than these (e.g Snow Leopard) then the OS doesn't know how to deal with these RAW files.

  • Problems with iCloud photos on both iPhoto and Aperture after uploading Yosemite

I uploaded Yosemite and am unable to access my photo albums in iCloud on both iPhoto or Aperture.
I have repaired permissions, repaired database, rebooted, checked preferences. done everything I can think of to get them visible on my Macbook pro.
I know that the albums are there as they show on my iPad.
any new photos are shared and I can place them in the albums but none of the 15,000+ photos previously shared show in their respective albums.
This after leaving the programmes running for 3 days.
    any help really appreciated
    Thank you

Can you please show a sample of the wrong dates - both for Aperture and iPhoto?
What is your Aperture version and your iPhoto version exactly?
What did you do, before this problem started? Have you tried already some trouble shooting, like repairing the Aperture library ? Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

  • Missing photos in both iPhoto and Aperture

I recently upgraded to Aperture 3.1.2 and transferred all my photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. In total I transferred about 15000 photos from my iPhoto library. I noticed some photos were missing in Aperture. After opening iPhoto again, some photos were missing there (although the thumbnail was present). I tried restoring my iPhoto library but that did not restore the photos. I BELIEVE between iPhoto and Aperture I have all my photos but I can't be entirely sure. Does anyone have anyone out there have any ideas of what I can try? I already rebuilt my iPhoto library and that just helped identify what photos I am missing in iPhoto.

This definitely sounds like and iPhoto and/or backup problem.
How was the backup done? If it was with TM (or another incremental backup program) did you check an earlier backup?
If you restored the iPhoto library from backup and the images were still missing I'm afraid there isn't much that you can do.

  • How do I create a cameo effect on certain photos in either iPhoto or aperture?

How do I create a cameo effect on selected photos in aperture?

how do I check to see if I have  lay=test version?
When you select Aperture in the Applications folder in the Finder, the version should show below the Aperture icon:
    The latest version is 3.4.5.
Well it looks like I now have lost my aperture library, had to open iphoto to use it.!
Have you opened your Aperture ibrary with a version of iPhoto that is newer than your Aperture version? The versions of Aperture and iPhoto must be compatible, to be able to use the same photo library with both applications. To use both Aperture and iPhoto on the same library you would need to have iPhoto 9.4.3 and Aperture 3.4.5.

  • Library iPhoto to Aperture

    Hi,
I have now imported my iphoto Library to Aperture, to save space and speed is it recommended that I delete the library in iphoto?
    Thanks

is it recommended that I delete the library in iphoto?
Have you tested thoroughly, that the import went well? I'd keep a backup of the iPhoto library on an external disk, so that you can repeat the import, just in case there have been conversion problems.
Once you are sure, that all is well, you can delete delete the iPhoto library, yes. It will not save speed, but free space.

  • Combining library (iPhoto) with Aperture

I've just purchased Aperture becasue I saw that I can use the same library that I have with iPhoto as 1 library between the 2.  I also got aperture because of the ability to create different libraries and store them on other drives.  But initially I'm having a problem and I can't understand what the issue is..
First off, I had very little hard drive space left due to an ever growing iphoto library.  So I copied my iphoto library to an external drive set up on my network here at my house (actually its on a timecapsule 2tb).  I then deleted the iphoto library on my macbook air's hard drive and then pointed iphoto to the copied iphoto library.  Iphoto works fine and I can see all my pictures.
Now when I started Aperture, it asked if I wanted to use the existing iphoto library, which I said yes, but it said that the file format was not acceptable.  I'm not sure what the issue is, as I do NOT want to store pics on my macbook air any longer (initially).  What I'd like to do is make an aperture library that I will keep on my macbook air hard drive that contains pics from current travels, and then eventually once they are edited move them to my external drives at my house (either my 4TB networked drive or my 2TB time capsule).
Can someone please tell me if I am or not able to do this?  What could be wrong with my iphoto library that wont allow the 2 programs to use the same library?

You need iPhoto 9.3 or later and also need to open your iPhoto library with this version so it can update the library format. This Apple support article has additional details.
I recommend against keeping a working library on a networked drive. There's an article on ApertureExpert.com about it that will explain more.

  • How do I add photos to photo stream from BOTH iPhoto and Aperture

I use Photostream for displaying photos I have taken on my DSLR on my iPad. I take the photos, download them into iPhoto and then add them to Photostream. They then appear on my iPad for display to friends and family.  But some of my photos are now being manipulated in Aperture. I'd like to display these in the same Photostream, but so far, because I have to choose either the iPhoto libray or the Aperture library - but not both - for the photostream, the only way I can do this is to export the photos from Aperture into iPhoto (which doubles up my photo files). Is there a simpler way to do this?

OK. But let's say you are in iPhoto and you switch libraries so that you are now looking at your Aperture library. In order to add photos to your photostream you have to activate iCoud/photostream again in your iPhoto preferences for the new library. Then you get a message up which says: "iCloud Photos for [my iCloud email address] is being used with another library named "iPhoto Library". Switching iCoud Photos to this library will turn it off in iPhoto library."
In other words this does not solve my problem of how to have one photostream which contains photos from BOTH iPhoto and Aperture.
Is it perhaps possible to merge the iPhoto and Aperture libraries so that you only have one library for both applications?

  • Hi, I want to know if the quality of a photo book with iphoto is the same that with aperture,

the photos have the same quality, because I used aperture to retouch it, but for me is easy make a photo book with iphoto, I only imported the photos form aperture to iphoto, and I made the photo book, I want to buy it, but before I want to know which one have more quality or if the method of impression, aperture and iphoto, are the same.
so have both the same quality of impression?
And if the answer is no, Can I export my photo book form iphoto to aperture? how?
    Thanks a lot

Quality is a personal opinion - I assume (but no one here really knows for sure) that the same vendor does both -
    - here are technical details on both - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3412
in cany case you can not move a photo book from iPhoto to Aperature
And Apple does have a 100% satisfaction guarentee

No, the iPhoto and Aperture libraries are completely different library files. One does not reference the other when you make changes to images within each of the separate libraries. That said, it is important that you understand the way in which Aperture and iPhoto work. You can either build two completely separate libraries, each with their own separate master images, or you can build one library of master images (in either Aperture or iPhoto) and allow the other application to "borrow" the thumbnail previews. For more information on this, see the Aperture or iPhoto help manual.
    (2)
Can I transfer a single iPhoto album or do I need to drag all the photos into a new Aperture album
You can transfer whatever you like. You can transfer 1 photo, 10 photos, 1000 photos, 1 album, 50 albums, etc. A lot of this really depends on what you are trying to do. May I ask what you goal is? In order to transfer a single iPhoto album into Aperture, you can do this directly from within Aperture without having to export any images out of iPhoto first. Just go to File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser. From there, you can drag whichever album you like into Aperture.
    (3)
If I add a photo to either Aperture or iPhoto will it automatically send it to the other library if I decide to have the two library's ?
No, the libraries are not linked. They can be used to work together and to share images back and forth, but they are completely independent of one another in terms of work flow. Do not expect images edited in one application to show those same edits in the other application even if both applications are open. If you want the updated image in the other application, you will need to reimport or retransfer it.
IOW's is there an update button ?

  • Watermarking in iPhoto or Aperture

I would like to watermark my photos in either iPhoto or Aperture, and all the solutions I have found requires that I "export" the photo. I dont want to do that because I am afraid having duplicates of hundreds of photos. How do I avoid this?
Or should I be uploading my photos in a completely different system, I just really like how these programs organize the photos and I dont want to lose that organization.
    Thanks

Well which app do you use, Aperture or iPhoto? I can only speak for Aperture.
There are a number of ways to watermark in Aperture. The application itself is able to add a watermark file to an image on export. Or you can look into a plugin to do the job. BorderFx is a free plugin that will watermark an image as well as a lot of other good stuff.
See this video from Peachpit Aperture Quick Tip - Using Watermarks for information on both adding a watermark in Aperture as well as creating a watermark file in a number of different apps.

  • Error Message (Arrow and Exclaimation Mark in Yellow Triangle) Showing on Bottom Right of Some Photos after Merging iPhoto Library into Aperture

The strange thing is that some of these said photos with an error message have a normal thumbnail and can be opened fine, but the others (most of them) just have an empty space in the thumbnail as if the image can't be found.
I tried to Locate Referenced Files as Leonie suggested in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3686982?tstart=0 but got this message 'The Selection Doesn't Have Any Referenced Files', so i presume that's not the issue.
In the thread mentioned above, Leonie mentioned something about not emptying trash. I did empty my trash recently, and started to think these images may have been poor quality ones i previously deleted in the iPhoto library … but that still doesn't explain why the error currently appears on some images which seem to work fine (these images are ok quality ones and there is no way i would have deleted them in the past).
Also - the 'Processing' message at the bottom of the browser seems to be spinning endlessly. I just left it for over 10 hours overnight and it's still going. Could this be linked to these error images which it's having a hard time finding/loading?
Quite baffled at the moment, and would really appreciate any feedback. TIA.
    EDIT:
I just looked more closely. It appears that most of my folders have duplicates of the same image with exactly the same file name. And all the images with the error message have them on both duplicates (i.e. one on an image that has an empty thumbnail, and one on an image that's fine).
When i initially tried to import the library, it proceeded half way then failed. After opening the iPhoto library in Aperture first, and then doing the import again, everything worked fine. So, i'm wondering if the images with errors that are empty/blank may be the result of the failed 1st import.
What's puzzling is why they weren't overwritten (especially since all the file names are exactly the same). When importing the library, i chose 'merge' instead of 'add' when prompted, thinking that would solve it. Obviously not.
    EDIT 2:
After reflecting on this, i thought one solution may be to:
    a) Find all the error'd images that are empty/blank and delete them, and then
    b) Find and remove all duplicates
So i followed Leonie's suggestion to create a Smart Album and use the 'File Status is Missing' rule.
But now, i see that there are images that i imported into Aperture months ago that have the same problem. And the new thing is that there are duplicates with errors where *both* images are visible (whereas for the iPhoto library i just imported, there were dupes where one version was blank and the other was visible and seemingly ok).
I'm really hoping there is a simple solution to this, and am awaiting some feedback before i try anything else.
NB. This is a super large (over 100GB) Aperture library that i am trying to consolidate everything into. It is Work In Progress and i was only going to back it up once the import of various iPhoto libraries was done. However, I'm wondering if it's better to just back up first - but if i do it now, the backup will include all these errors and duplicates. What would you guys do?

    UPDATE 2:
The users in these 2 threads seem to have a similar File Status Not Found issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4086569?tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17757686#17757686
Followed Leonie's advice to look for the (missing) masters inside the Masters folder, and indeed, they were missing. So, that confirms the reason for the error message.
If this does not work, because you have managed originals, inside the Aperture Library, look for your originals in the Aperture Library Package. Select the Library in the Finder and ctrl-click, then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up. In the Finder window that opens, navigate to the folder "Masters". Your missing images should be inside; the folder is structured by date of import.
Of course, the question is - why the masters for these few images are missing, when the other images in the same project that were imported/merged at the same time are fine.
Trying to do the library import/merge from iPhoto into Aperture again. Fingers crossed. Will report back on the result.

  • I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000  photos in my iPhoto Library. Can I import only certain events from iPhoto into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library?

I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000 + photos in my iPhoto Library. I see that I can create a unified library between the two. I am wondering if I can import only certain events from iPhoto (like only 2014 events) into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library? Are there any benefits to bringing the whole iPhoto library over to Aperture (iPhoto is SO SLOW for me, I wonder if it is because I have so many photos). Or, any detriment to only bring a few events over?
And, if I don't merge the two libraries, I assume that means I cannot do it at a later date?
Help. My local Apple store has had very few Aperture workshops, and the next one is like 2 months away.

Thank you so much for this information. Here are some responses/comments:
Disk space - it says 114.43 GB out of 499.25 GB free. I have no idea if that is enough.
    iPhoto version is 9.5.1
Again, I am not sure how to know if I have 3rd party software...but I don't think I do. Is 3rd party software anything non-apple?
I will try rebuilding the library. if that doesn't help, maybe I need more memory...? That is what Apple suggested, but that, of course, means buying something else. I've already bought APERTURE, on their recommendation...
It wasn't, and they told me it was slow because I had too many photos for iPhoto to handle and that I should buy Aperture. Which I did.
What is your iPhoto version? Are you using the most recent version 9.5.1?
iPhoto can handle 20000 photos, no problem.  Your computer can be slow for several reasons:
The most common problem for slowness - insufficient disk space. Don't let your free disk space drop below 20 GB of free space, better more. If the operating system does not have enough working space and the applications you are using, you will notice a very lagging behaviour.
Older or incompatible softweare can cripple your mac. Do you have any older third-party software installed, that might have installed incompatible kernel extensions?
Aperture might be slow or keep crashing, if you imported a corrupted image or incompatible video,  that cannot be processed. Then Aperture will try over and over again to create previews and never succeed.  You could test for this situation, by launching Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If Aperture will launch and work better this way, you probably have some bad media in your photo library.
Another problem to check for is a corruption of your Aperture/iPhoto library. You have run the First Aid Tools to repair the iPhoto Library, but have you ever tried to rebuild the library? See this post by Old Toad: Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

  • HT204414 How to import both iPhoto and Aperture library to iCloud Photo Library (Photos app)

    Hi all,
Based on the article here (Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support) has anyone tried to bring both an iPhoto and Aperture library into iCloud Photo Library so that both libraries are available as one in iCloud and form the one Photos app library rather than being seen as separate libraries. I don't want the two separated as I have 200GB's of space in iCloud which is plenty to hold the two's collective space of about 40GB's.
It seems as though the procedure is pretty simple.
First of all set one of your libraries as the System Photo Library, this will happen naturally with setting up Photos app for the first time. I chose iPhoto as the original library.
Let this library upload all it's photo's to iCloud over a few minutes, hours, days etc.
When finished, enter your other library by closing Photos app and reopening while holding down the Option key (usually Alt). In this case I now opened the Aperture library that it had found.
Under Preferences > iCloud set this library as the System Photo Library and in turn it will have the ability to upload to iCloud.
When it's finished I suppose you will have both iPhoto AND Aperture pictures in the one iCloud Photo Library.
At least I hope the above makes sense.
Anybody already tried this with good / bad results, let us know here.

found it here  - 'If you designate a new library as the System Photo Library and then turn on iCloud Photo Library, the photos and videos in the new library will merge with those already in your iCloud Photo Library. If you want to keep the contents of your photo libraries separate, don’t turn on iCloud Photo Library for more than one library in Photos.'
That bit seems clear. You can merge photos from different libraries by making them 'designated' first  .
BUT  this means that Photos app only shows you library A , or library B, depending on which one you have opened , but Icloud library contains photos from Both library A and library B .
    is this correct ?
and if so, does it not get a but confusing ?!?

  • Photo preview blank when browsing Aperture Library from iPhoto

    Hello to everyone,
I need to import in iPhoto some photo of my Aperture's Library, but when I open it from iPhoto I can see all the pictures exept the lastest that I've imported in the Aperture Library (that have been taken with a Canon EOS 550D with RAW format): I see a blank icon (that can I select and import in my iPhoto library) instead its preview.
In Aperture the Canon EOS 550D RAW format works correctly, but I can't see the preview of the image in the browser under iPhoto.
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (with all the updates) and the lastest versione of both iPhoto and Aperture.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Terence,
thanks for the reply, but I've already regenerated all my previous (the entire library), but with no success.. I still continue to see a blank icon browsing the Aperture Library from iPhoto.
But I see that each time I enter in Aperture, it alway restart processing library (but only for some photos).. when it finish that process, I close Aperture and when I enter in it again, it restart processing the same photos.. again and again and again
    Any other suggestion?
    Regards.
