Max RAM question

I've done a search but couldn't find specifics for my iBook. I have the 12-inch, 1.33Ghz, 40GB hard drive, 512MB installed RAM model. It says that the maximum RAM I can install into my laptop is 1.5GB. I have been looking at 1GB RAM upgrades but will this not work since it is over the 1.5GB limit? I know it isn't that much over but I just want to make sure. Just being overly cautious, I suppose. Thanks in advance!
JC

It may or may not work. Apple's software has a tendency to be very sensitive to machines whose specs are exceeded or not matched perfectly, with kernel panics and other issues coming up. See my FAQ*:

  • Can anyone answer this question regarding MAX RAM?

My old iMac SE DV graphite was purchased and delivered in January, 2000. The original order catalog (which I kept) claimed that it was "expandable to 512mb", as were all the 400mhz G3 slot-loading DV models in various 'flavors' including my Graphite Special Edition model. Also, both / all versions had the ATIRage 128 accelerator with 8mb SDRAM.
The only differences I can discern are that my Graphite has more ram (128mb) and had a slightly bigger hard drive (13GB on the graphite vs 10GB for the 'fruit').
Note: I have since replaced the hard drive with a 20GB since the original died within the first 2 years.
Also, I am running in 10.3.9 most of the time but still have OS 9.2.2 in the machine.
On this disussion site and other places (including MacWorld articles) I've seen conflicting statements as regards the MAXIMUM RAM my graphite should/could have. Some say 1GB (2x512) and some say 512 (2x256).
Can anyone once and for all, settle this question for me so that I can make an intelligent purchase?
(and thank you for the info re: PC100 as the way to go, not PC133)
    Thanks & Peace to all.

This question was answered in your other post by me. Max RAM is 1 GB.

  • What's the max RAM for HP Elite 8200 minitower?

Hi, I'm looking at getting an HP Compaq 8200 Elite CMT PC (part number LE245PA) and have a question about the maximum RAM it will take. The PC is the one at http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/sm/WF05a/12454-12454-64287-3328898-3328898-5037949.html?dnr=1
Page 10 of http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13879_na/13879_na.pdf is a bit ambiguous and I can't work out whether the max is 16GB, or whether it is 32GB.
It says "1GB, 2GB, and 4GB DDR3 DRAM technologies are supported. Using 4 GB device technologies, the largest memory capacity possible is 32 GB, assuming dual channel mode with four x 8 GB dual ranked unbuffered DIMM memory configuration".
But then the table at the bottom of the same page seems to imply that that maximum is 16GB.
Can anyone please advise whether the maximum is 16GB or 32GB in this model?

    Hi:
I don't understand all that rigamarole.
It is very confusing. It appears that HP copied some info from Intel regarding the chipset's specs and I couldn't make heads or tails of it on the Intel site either.
Max RAM per slot is 4 GB.
I installed 16 GB in mine.

  • Power Mac G5 Quad - 6 GB RAM - OSX 10.5.8 - Max RAM available?

    Hello All,
I have (as the subject reads) a G5 Quad 2.5 GHz with 6 GB RAM running OSX 10.5.8. I use it as a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and have a question regarding RAM and "bits."
Is my computer capable of using all 6 GB of RAM at this point? How much RAM could I add - if any - and get the most out of my machine? I read somewhere that Leopard can only handle 4 GB of RAM, but am not too sure. I would like to max out the RAM, but if it only handles 4 GB, then there's no point. I have a Pentium 4 PC with 4 GB RAM and know that XP can handle only up to ~3.6 GHz, but OSX I am not too sure.
Lastly, what bit-rate is my computer capable of? The box says it is 64 bit, but as I understand, Leopard is only 32 bits. Since the businessmen at Apple chose to make 10.6 available only for Intel Macs, it seems that 64 bits will not be available on my machine. Pretty confusing stuff...
So, what do you guys think? What's the max RAM that my G5 Quad can use running OSX Leopard? And what exactly is the "bits" deal with my setup all about?
Thanks in advance for your help! Happy new year!
    Cheers,
    Cam.

You can add 2*2GB sticks to the 6*1GB sticks you have, no penalty.
I'd update to 10.5.8 & any other updates, he latest Security update seemed to improve both CPU & RAM usage.
    I have 10GB...

  • HP dv9629ca Laptop (Ram Question)

Here is a RAM question. The Laptop had 2 one Gigabyte SO-DIMMs with them both installed the PC would not boot. the lights would come on but the screen remained black. I thought it was a RAM problem since when I would only put in a single stick of RAM the computer Booted no problem. I figured the one ram was BAD. Yet when i bought a 2GB SO-DIMM and added it to the 1GB already inside the computer wouldn't boot just like before. so I removed both rams and Put the 2GB stick in where the other was working and It shows 2GB now. I Know the Laptop maxes out at 4GB of RAM with a 64bit version of Windows installed. Is it possible to find a 4GB SO-DIMM and put it into the Slot that works or will it only accept a maximum of 2GB per Slot?
    Laptop Details
AT newegg.ca they have a Single SO-DIMM that is 4GB the Laptop Max is 4GB. Not sure if it would read 4GB coming from a single SO-DIMM

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion dv9629ca Notebook Computer and here is the HP Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer. Both pieces of information indicate that 4GB (2 X 2GB) is the maximum. 2GB is the largest size supported in each slot.
You may wish to clean the slots or reseat the memory... you may also want to inspect the slots for debris or bent contacts.

Specs say it comes with 6GB 1DIMM, 2 user accessable slots.  I thought that meant only one slot was being used, the other is open.  Am I wrong?

  • Max ram under 8.6

    Hello,
Someone gave me their old B & W G3 400mhz tower with no ram. It's running OS 8.6 (yes I have a copy). I put in it a 256mb stick, 128mb stick, and a 64mb stick yet the system profiler says 128mb, 128mb, and 64mb for a total of 320mb instead of 448mb.
So is it the G3 not recognizing the 256mb stick or is it 8.6?
What is the maximum ram that 8.6 see? Could I put 4x256 in it and use 1024mb or would I need to get system 9x?
iMac DV 400   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi, n8mac -
The max RAM for a B&W G3 is 1.0GB - four sticks of 256MB each.
OS 8.6 should have no issue with a 256MB stick.
Usually when a stick of RAM reports as being half of what it should be, the problem is that the RAM module is not of the correct type.
Specifically, on p. 35 of the B&W User manual it includes this in the description of the RAM specs -
"Maximum number of memory devices on DIMM is 16."
A 'memory device' is one of the small dark gray or black blocks on a RAM module. All the ones I've seen which meet that requirement have 8 on each side of the stick. If that requirement is not met, the stick is usually reported as being half the size it should be.
You can also download and run DIMM First Aid to check whether the RAM is fully compatible.

  • VERY SPECIFIC RAM QUESTION (not answered in prior topics)

I have a very specific RAM question. I've been pouring through the discussions and I see TONS of stuff about the proper way to upgrade RAM. I've done that before without incident, but here is my dilemma:
I'm using the 3.0Ghz, 8-core, MP currently with 8GB of the 667Mhz RAM (8x1GB). The memory is all matched from OWC and I have had no problems.
I just bought 16GB of new RAM from OWC (4x4GB).
I'm going to remove all 8 of the current 1GB DIMM's, and place two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser A, and two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser B. That will give me 16GB's in matched pairs on slots 1 & 2 of both riser A and B.
My question is this: Should I install two of my old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser A, and two of the old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser B (for a total of 20GB's)?
I've read that having all 8 slots filled = better performance but I'm not sure the mix of 4GB DIMM's and 1GB DIMM's.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks So Much,
    Tom

Optimally you want matched quads in each Riser. However, Bare Feats did some memory benchmarks that you might wish to read regarding memory performance versus different configurations. As for proper installation see the following:

  • What is the max ram for a iMac DV 400mhz? (family M5521)

I've read several posts on this forum about the max memory for this iMac. Several people say it's 512 then usually someone comes back and says "Actually it's 1024". As per the Apple specs page (posted below) the Min is 64MB and the Max is 512MB. Is that overall system, or per slot? I'm guessing it's per slot, since it has two slots and the Ram Sizes states it can handle a 512 chip (2 slots @ 512 ea. = 1024) am I wrong in this?
    Thanks,
    -Matt

First ensure that you have the correct firmware installed. See Announcement: iMac (Slot Loading): Install iMac Firmware 4.1.9 Before Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
You will need OS 9 installed on the hard drive to install that firmware update. If OS 9 is currently on the hard drive you can install the firmware update (if needed) before swapping the hard drive.
Yes you can install OS 10.3 directly without installing OS 9. If there is any possibility that you will want to boot from OS 9 in the future, ensure that you pick the option to install the OS 9 disk drivers.

  • IMac G4 20" 1.25GHz:  Max RAM?

As with my iBook, I'm getting conflicting max RAM numbers for my iMac. Can someone tell me? (Max recognized/utilized/etc). Are these 200-pin SODIMMS @ PC2700 (333mhz)?
Also, the drop down box on this page:
    www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2448
lists separate chips for "user" and "factory" slots, compounding the confusion...
Thanks in advance for the facts,
    Thx,
    Ethan
    Phoenix, AZ

The iMac G4 DDR RAM has two different RAM slots. One is located behind the 'user access' plate and this is the 'user' slot according to Apple it will take up to 512Mb PC2700(333MHz) 200pin SODIMM (laptop memory). The other slot is the 'factory slot' this is for a PC2700 (333MHz) 186pin DIMM (desktop memory). This will have a 256Mb or 512Mb chip already installed - as supplied by Apple.Since the iMac G4 20" was issued the 1Gb SODIMMs /DIMMs have become available and several suppliers are now suppling 1Gb PC2700 SODIMMs/DIMMs for the iMac G4 20", so the RAM maximum should be 2Gb(?) However I am struggling to find anyone who has actually done this to confirm it.
Crucial.com will assume you aren't going to touch the factory slot.
Here is a link to the instructions to change the factory RAM.
