Max safe CPU Voltage?

I am in the middle of OC'ing my system.  So far I am doing pretty good.  I can get up to 252 clock generator x 9.5X CPU multiplier at 4X HT multiplier.  (I currently got my memory at 133 3-6-6-11: I'll tweak this a little bit later.)
To get this I have my CPU Voltage at 1.7V.  Running Prime95 with option #2, I can keep my CPU temp below 55C.
My question is, is this voltage too high?  I understand that voltage will raise the temperature, and that it will decrease the life expectancy some, but is there some other problem?  Is this really safe?  Or should I reduce the voltage?https://forum-en.msi.com/images/msi/smilies/confused2.gif

Increasing Vcore increases the gate voltage on the transistors inside which lowers the on resistance allowing the transistors to drive their signal lines harder and thus faster. Increasing Vcore also means the signal lines need to swing farther (voltage wise) than they did before. As you continue to increase Vcore the on resistance of the transistors improves less and less as other limiting factors in the transistor take over, however the signal lines still need to swing more and more as vcore goes up. It's like being able to speed a runner in a race up, but when you do the race also gets longer. At some point the runner is going as fast as he can but the race keeps getting longer so it actually takes him longer to finish.
You want to find that sweet spot where he finishes the race the quickest.
The other problem with increasing Vcore is increasing the temperature of the die because of all the heat generated. The hotter it gets, the more the asphalt melts and the slower the runner will go. You don't want it to get to hot or things slow down.
Increased Vcore also brings a pair of failure mechanisms with it, one is just that the heat can't be removed quickly enough and when the silicon gets hot enough the currents from thermally generated carriers cause a runaway condition and the chip just melts down. This happens fast.
The slow failure mechanism is electromigration, where the currents are so high in the metal interconnect wires on the die that the metal starts to flow. Eventually the wires break. This happens slowly.
Always use the lowest Vcore you can that will give you the performance you want. In other words, err on the low side.

    My vcore voltage fluctuates between 1.44v and 1.50v. In the bios I have 1.42+6.6%(see my sig). I have ran prime 95 for 24h stable, but recently I tried OCCT(a french program). The first test ran for 30min OK, the torture test froze my computer within an hour or two. My question is what is Max stable CPU voltage supported by K8n Neo4 Plat.?Because obviously when the mobo drops it to 1.44 it IS NOT ENOUGH. Difference of .06v obviously is critical for the stability. Anyway it should be 1.425+6.6%=1.519 which is nowhere near 1.44. I currently run at 36-38C idle and 45C under load. Is it a bios problem? I use 1.6 bios and I don't have any problems whatsoever.
    Any opinions appreciated.
    BTW tried to raise the mobo voltage at 1.55(1.50 default) but seems that there is no difference.
    BIOS shows my voltages as follows:
       +3.3v=3.12 to 3.15 mostly stays at 3.14 pc wizard shows 3.14, core center shows 3.22
       +5.5v=4.96 to 4.99
       +12v =11.96 to 12.22 core center shows 11.96, pc wizard shows 12.22

    I can afford the proper hardware.  In fact, I bought a DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI DR to replace the defective K8N Neo4 SLI board.
    As soon as the new K8N board comes back from RMA, I figure to sell it - say half off.  I think for something that may or may not work as advertised, half price is fair.
    And speaking of processors, these Venice chips are really phenomenal - they're just like (or maybe even better than) the good old XP1700 JIUHB chips.  I still have one of those - and strangely enough, it's still running - in an MSI K7T Turbo 2 board (KT133A).    That JIUHB served me well - it'd do a 500MHz overclock with no strain at all.  If I had water cooling, I bet I coulda  got 1 GHz out of it.
    The two Venice 3200 processors I have both seem to be really good overclockers.  The one that was in the rig I RMA'd is the best - right now in the new Lanparty board, I've got it running at 2.5 GHz (1:1 @ 250 MHz) with about 1.55 volts.  It's idling at about 30c and only runs at about 44c under load - and the AS5 hasn't even cured yet! 
    That chip is gonna be one helluva overclocker!
    I'll let it run at 2.5 GHz for another week or so till the AS5 has cured, then I'll see just how far I can go (without the temps getting too high).  The way it's gone from this point, I think 2.7 GHz is very reasonable for a goal.
    And as I think newbie222 pointed out, as long as the temps are kept reasonable, there is no actual risk to the processor.
    The point I was making is that with my old, defective K8N, that would not have been possible - BECAUSE THE BOARD WAS DEFECTIVE.  It was defective because the vcore did not operate up to spec (wouldn't go as high as it was advertised to) and because of the voltage fluctuations.
    How would you feel if you bought a new car that was advertised as getting 24 MPG highway and it only got 17 MPG?  Or if you ordered Comcast's 8 Mb/s downstream Gold Tier and only got 6 Mb/s downstream?  Or if you ordered a 102 channel cable package that turned out to only have 88 channels?
    It's all the same exact, precise thing.
    If MSI advertises you can get a vcore of 1.7> volts then you fer damned sure better be able to get it. 
    The main reason people buy boards like the K8N is to overclock - it's the "enthusiast" community that the board is targeted to.
    I find it hard to believe anyone would even want to buy one of these boards and not overclock.  What's the point?  If all someone wants  is something that will run at stock speeds, then they oughta save a few bucks and buy a Dell or whatever.

    All depends on your cooling and setup in general. Everything ive read suggests the A64 doesnt respond much past 1.65v anyways, especially on air. If you have water or phase change cooling go for it though

    Use version 11.5... It works good.
    Also, on many games with Bulldozer, some motherboards will BSOD, or on the 990fxa-gd80 you get insanely low performance. Such titles include Shogun 2, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and many more. On the ASUS Sabertooth, a user was able to correct all of his problems by rolling back his BIOS to version 0705, but that doesn't really help us here much, other than to say hopefully MSI will also be able to correct these issues in a BIOS update soon...
    As for me, I'm shopping for Intel/Nvidia parts now. I'm fed up with this crap. It's been one thing right after another with my AMD build....Never had any issues with any other system I've ever built in my life (been building systems since 386/486 days; over 15 years), but this one has just been a nightmere...Nothing against MSI - I love their products and hoping to get at least a couple gtx580 Lightning Xtremes, if not also one of their fine Z68 boards.

    I forgot to ask this question along while asking about a safe memory voltage, but how far can I safely increase the core voltage for my CPU(P4 2.60C 800FSB) which at now is  running @ the default 1.54v. I'm interested in oc'ing a bit more without the danger of it frying. Thank you!  ?(

    IMHO is the absolut maximum 1.75, better 1.70VCore.
    Look @ http://www.overclockers.com Forum and search for SNDS (Sudden NorthwoodDeathSyndrom).
    My Northwood 2.4B runs since 5 Month at a maximum of 1.70V and i have no problems, but i am also watercooled and i have the Graphiccard in the Watercooled System.
    The problem with the MSI Boards could be the Temp readings, i seems to be to high. Withe the Epox EP4BEA and the Proc @2.700MhZ i had a maximum of ~45°C and now with the 865PE from MSI the CoreCenter shows 51°C and under absolut fulload over Hours a max of 58°C.

    In BIOS I set the CPU Voltage at 1.43V. But when I run Prime95 I can see in HWMon that the Vcore can go up to a max of 1.6V and most of the time it is around 1.55V and above. On seeing this I stopped P95. Here's an example. CPU Voltage was set at 1.43V in BIOS.
    A MSI user on another forum also reported a similar situation with his system.
    Is there a way to steady the CPU Voltage?

    Not really. Voltage is going to vary & spike in relation with the load applied. That is why in many cases it is best to lower the clock some to keep the voltages within safe limits for long term use.

  • MSI P6N SLI-FI cannot adjust cpu voltage

    Ok ive tried two different bioses (2.0 and 2.12) and in both I cannot adjust the cpu voltage. It reads 0.00000V and I cannot adjust it please help.

    Personally, I think people are jumping to conclusions about OCZ memory .  My (MSI SLI Platinum board) system runs perfectly stable with OCZ memory.  Saying that OCZ is a problem is too broad a statement - hell, OCZ sells 11 different models of DDR2-800.
    The memory in question in this case happens to be the Platinum version (actually, in this thread, the memory doesn't even seem to be the issue), which must have it's voltage oc'd to 2.1v when running at the stated 4-5-4-15 DDR2-800 speed.
    Anyway, cell_491, make sure that you've disabled:
    C1E (might be hidden on Advanced settings -> CPU Features page... use F4 to show it)
    D.O.T
    EIST
    ALL spread-spectrum settings
    ...note that these boards will reset to some defaults if you fail to POST a few times, so make sure the above are still disabled.  Also, keep in mind that while the memory 'settings' are or can be 'unlinked' from the FSB, it's still using a divider internally, so you might want to clock the memory down to 667 when you're trying to determine the FSB top-end.
    I've been running my E6400 at FSB 1333 (333 x 8 = 2.664 GHz) with my OCZ DDR2-667 ram oc'd to DDR2-800 4-5-5-12-24-2T 1.9v (unlinked 400mhz ram freq) perfectly stable for the past few weeks.  Last night I played around with oc'ing the CPU some more and managed to get up to around FSB 1480 (370 x 8 = 2.96 GHz) running stable by adding some voltage, but I'm still running the stock Intel heat-sink and the E6400 starts getting pretty hot at that speed, so I backed it back down to 1333 (2.6GHz) which I'm now running in linked mode with my memory at 4-4-4-12-20-1T at 1.9v (I haven't started tuning the timings yet).
    I need this board to make my living, so it has to be stable and I can't afford to fry anything, so until I upgrade the cooling, I don't plan to try for something over 3GHz, but if you've got good cooling, then this might help.  It's for the 680i chips so the BIOS options will be different, but the 650i uses the same NB as the 680i, so there's a lot of info that should be usefull (including some max recommended safe voltages).

    I have a little question regarding cpu voltage: When i set vcore to "auto" i get a nice low voltage when idle but during load i only get 1.264 max and that is to low.
    Is there a setting to increase the voltage during load and still have the cpu vcore set to auto?

    Did you do a clean reinstall and deleted the Firefox program folder?

    I have Dual-Core E2160 VRam CPU voltage 1.3.. its lowest? I dont know where in Bios can this be changed.. because iam on stock 1.8GHz and temp is still 70°C+ in idle. (but in bios its wrote 50°C)

    The Alpine 11 is almost as weak as a boxed cooler. It is a most simple all aluminium cooler without any heatpipes that is limited to just 95W TDP max. According to Arctic it cools a i5-2500K 3°C better than the boxed one.
    Measure temps under load and in idle with Core Temp and report back.

    today I looked to the command "dmidecode" to visit the cpu voltage. I saw that the voltage is on 11.7V, is that an Error? And the other thing I visited, is that the cpu clock is always on 2.400MHz, but the system utilization is very low (only few % on each thread). Why is that?
    This is the output of the command:

    You should be using lm-sensors for these data.  Even then, unless someone knowledgeable has verified each voltage output and mapped it to the correct motherboard sensors, you are guessing.  To look at both endpoints, vcore and frequency, try i7z-git from the AUR.  It reads the MSR values directly from the CPU.

    for 4GHz CPU frequancy that temp is all good if it tops out below 75C when its under maximum load when you get around to testing it then its all good and you have nothing to worry about!
    so try intel burn test till it hits maximum temp it runs at and see how hot it gets (remember any temp under 100C is safe but the lower the temp is under that the better!)
    so get the cpu a maximum sustained load to see how high its  temps go to and report back to us but it looks fine so far and maximum temp is the most important metric to have (idle and light load temps say very little as they sound totally fine so far)

    Hi,  I Have an MSI 990FXA GD65 with an AMD FX 6100 cpu.
     I have been struggling with this board for a while trying to match the voltage I set in the bios to the readings I am getting from CPU-Z and HWMonitor.
    at default with CPU voltage set to auto in the bios cpu-Z and HWMonitor show 1.32v at idle and about 1.30v under load with P95, if I set the cpu voltage to 1.4 in bios they show about 1.48 at idle and 1.44 under load.
    What puzzles me is that my CPU needs 1.4v in bios to run at 4.2 ghz, this seems to match what a lot of other people are getting with this CPU but if I am to trust CPU-Z's readings then I am needing 1.44v so should I be trusting what I set in the Bios or should I go with CPU-Z and face that I need a lot of volts to run stable and 4.2ghz is as far as I can go.
    I also seem to have very low temperatures for running such high voltages, if it's really at 1.48v then surely it should be getting hotter than 46 degrees running P95 even with a corsair H80. Temps were even lower with a thor's hammer in push/pull on there.
    For some reason I cannot run MSI ControlCentre in windows 8.1 so I have no idea what that will tell me.
    So just joined up here to see if anybody else has the same issue and can give me some advice.

    I have the sunbeam twister 120, and it's AMAZING!  The fans on it rotate in different directions making the airflow VERY quiet even at 3k RPM.  It's a dual fan push pull with 3 DirectCU Healpipes, and an amazingly smooth base.  I purchased mine for just under 30 bucks from Newegg (discontinued on their site) and it allows me to push my AMD Athlon ii X4 640 (3.0Ghz) to 3.8 with a 1v change, and still keeps it around stock temps.  @ 3.5Ghz (what I run @ stable due to motherboard limitations) I hit a max of 40c core temp and an idle of anywhere between 16c-20c.
    Stock temps were about 19-21c idle, and 38-40 under load.
    Stock cooler was almost 20c more idle, and under load, so this is DEFINITELY a badass cooler.
    It also comes with a fairly decent size tube of TX-4 Tuniq paste which is apparently one of the best in the game, so I went ahead, and used some of that on my HIS HD 6850, and I'll be damned, the paste alone dropped my temps enough to get a world record breaking overclock on stock air cooling.  The heatsink also comes with a "RheoSmart" rheostat controller that also plugs into the four, or three pin cpu fan connector, to allow you to switch between manual, or motherboard controller speeds. (Which is pretty awesome IMHO)  I absolutely LOVE this thing, and am 150% confident it'll be able ot cool my 8350 efficiently when I get it (if I don't end up waiting on the Steamroller cpu line.)
    This is what you're looking for.  According to several testers across the internet, this is right on par with a V6-V8 cooler...and over 30 bucks cheaper.

    I have problem with CPU voltage as even when I set it for example to 1.201v in bios, under load it overshot to 1.256-1268. The best is when I oc`ed cpu to 4GHZ and set voltage in bios for 1.30v it overshot for 1.45v+! Not to mention that temps are skyhigh from that. It doesn`t matter if I try to put BIOS Vcore on 1.1v on stock because under load it still rise to 1.16. I turned off all eist, c-state, turbo boost, phase led and switch phase, set vdrop to low and still something is wrong here. I updated the bios under dos from USB stick to newest 1.9 version in order to update CPU micro code without error and it not helped. I want to know is that even possible to fix or should I RMA MB or CPU.
    Minor problem is with sysfans as they power on for a second and turn off instantly to start working again when I see list on devices in post. After rebot when my monitor is switched off it takes something like 5 sec to power monitor on and another 5 to show bios, is that normal?

    I have similar issues, it's hard to tell which measurement is the most accurate, there are 2 different measurements in the control center that don't match up with the figures set in the bios.  The only way to be sure would be to get an expensive accurate multimeter but If you're only interested in running a stable overclocked computer without knowing the exact figures then get the computer running stable and lower the voltages until it starts to become unstable with prime95,
    Or you could work the other way round, set the voltages so it boots but doesn't run prime95 for long, then raise the vcore and vtt one at a time until your happy with the length of time prime95 runs without errors.  I'd be happy with 24 hours, I seem to remember errors creeping in at around the 9 hour mark on the setting below what I have it set to now.
