Maxed out MacBook pro or Mid level MacBook pro with Retina?

I am entering my first year in university in the next couple weeks. I am going to be studying commerce for the next 4 years. I want a macbook that will last me for the 4 years and still be a good product at that time period. Now I am wondering if I should spend $2000  on the maxed out MacBook pro or 2600 for the midlevel MacBookmacbook pro with Retina display. Looking forward to great feedback. Thanks

It depends on how far you want to go - and how much you want to spend - in maxing out the computer. Let me visit the Apple Store -
The 'base model' you should go with is the:
15-inch: 2.6 GHz
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
750GB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
Built-in battery (7 hours)
This will be a 'stock' item and has the maximum amount of RAM that Apple will install and is $2,199. The only modifcation to make on this model is the CPU and hard drive, as it also comes with the maxed out VRAM for the NVIDIA graphics card. I wouldn't go for the extra speed bump on the CPU - it's just not worth it. What is worth the extra money is an uprade to the hard drive - from the 750GB 5400-rpm to the 750GB 7200-rpm for an extra $50. If you really want to max it out, of course, you could add the $900 option of the 512GB SSD, but I wouldn't do that - simply too much to pay. So for $2,249 you could get:
15-inch: 2.6 GHz
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
750GB 7200-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
Built-in battery (7 hours)
...and have a very fast (not warp speed, but fast) computer that should you ever decide to upgrade, you can.
As for the Retina display, it's simply something that I would not invest in at this time. The 'base' model, with only 8GB of RAM is $2,799.00. Increase that RAM to 16GB, and you're looking at $2,999. The extra $750 just isn't worth it. And with few applications taking advantage of the Retina display (if they ever do) you're going to be looking at pixelated tools, text, etc., for who knows how many years. You could get by running only Apple applications, I suppose, but I'm just not ready to be placed in that kind of restrictive mode... are you?
Just my 2¢, again...

I purchased Lightroom on my old Macbook but recently updated to a Mac with Retina display. How do I access Lightroom on my new computer without purchasing it again?

If you created a new Apple ID, you have to purchase the app again. If you can still use the old ID, then you can download it again for free by using that ID. But you will run the risk of locking yourself out of your new Apple ID for 90 days by downloading the app with your old ID and associating the iPad with the old ID.
Is the risk of locking yourself out of your new Apple ID worth not having to pay $.99 again for an app?

  • Wake up problem. Macbook pro 15'', mid 2010, entry model with HR screen

My model is macbook pro 15'', mid 2010 with HR screen. I just used it for about two weeks.
If I close the lid and open it after a short time, everything is fine. But, if I close the lid and leave it for a long period (mostly overnight, sometimes with power adapter connected, sometimes without), then, when I open the lid, nothing happens. I can not hear anything from the harddisk, but the sleep indicator light is on (without flash). Then they only thing I can do is to hold the power button and turn it off. Then, I can turn it on and the system will recover from the safe sleep.
Although my data is safe but this is really annoying. I have tried to repair the permission but it does not work. Is there any solution to this? Or this is about the hardware?

  • Odd Macbook Charging Problem - Mid-2007 Macbook 13"

Just bought a 13" mid-2007 macbook, MB062LL/A. I also bought an 85W NEW OEM Magsafe charger. I put a new logic board, battery, and magsafe connector in the laptop and let it charge overnight. Its now green, but the battery isnt charged (15%). Now that I'm watching it, it will occasionally switch to orange and say 'charging', then go back to green. It occured to me that maybe the Charger is the problem ... Do I need to use the original 60W charger ? or does it matter?. I have reset the SMC, but have not performed calibration yet as battery is not fully charged.
Any suggestions? ... and 'No' the laptop has no warranty thru apple, I have done all the work myself.
    Thanks in advance

Profiler says 17 cycles, but I just relaced this battery with a new OEM Genuine Apple battery.
I tried the SMC Reset, but that didnt help.
Also, I just noticed something else ... Everytime I turn it on I get the message "System Date/Time is earlier than 2008 ..." So I went in and unchecked the auto update opton and manually set the date time. Shut down and power up and Date/Time is reset back at 12/31/2000. It does this evertime I shutdown and turn back on.
Not sure if this is related, but it probably is somehow ...
    Thanks for the reply

  • As a uni student, should i go for a macbook pro 13 inch or 13 inch with retina? concerns include overheating, lagging etc.

gotta get a new computer from uni, not too sure on the pro or pro with retina. its deffinately going to be a 13 inch but im concerned about overheating ,the removal of the optical drive in the retina plus ive heard stories that mountain lion and the retina arent very compatible, making it lag etc. im also thinking about purchasing off the apple website is this safe? if i recieve one and it end up breaking can i send it back or what? any replies would be super great thanks

The retina display will use a bit more battery than the non retina display will. What sre you going to school for? I agree with the form factor you are choosing.
A 13" for most folks at college is pretty ideal unless you are majoring in a heavy graphics, photography field os tudy. In that case I would want the 15.4" retina for certain.
I don't think you will have any issues between the retina or the non-retina with over-heating.
I have bought several things over the last few years off the Apple website and have had no issues.
    Good luck on your hunt!

  • Macbook Pro regular 2012 vs 2013 MBP with retina

I am deciding whether to get a new 2012 MBP, non retina, 4gb/500gb/ with dvd rom or the new MBP with retina. My needs are basic, nothing to advanced. I can get MPR for $950 out the door. I dont want to buy something I really dont need or will use. Any thoughts?

PS: side-by-side specs, graphics and drive data rates,
the newer of the two may be the better one to get, as
it has later Thunderbolt  with higher capacities, too.
Look into mactracker or other specification chart that
can be opened beside each other (as I have now) &
then you can see sections in each model, one at a
    time. MacTracker shows general-software-memory+
    graphics-connections-history by category.
2013 model Thunderbolt, Hard Drive Interface, graphics
spec all look good. Not sure if the history of graphic issue
in the dual-graphic card model 2012, was overcome or not.
However this may require some research...
If yours is one that shipped with Mavericks OS X 10.9
you may do well to get a copy of the installer on a
USB and dedicate it as a backup or set up a second
drive or other device to safe a download of the installer
and/or a copy-clone of the Mavericks. The limited total
of RAM available may not be a problem, with both units
shipping with an SSD and not a rotational HDD. And if
you like (& if yours has OS X 10.9) you could then use
OS X 10.10 too.  Be careful an 'upgrade' isn't done to
an older system by accident; surprises aren't so nice.
With either choice, be sure to get & make suitable backup
of your files in addition to a device to use Time Machine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Returning the macbook for a higher level macbook?!?!??!

    Hi all,
I just got my macbook 13 aluminum (2.0 GHz) on 14th April 2009 which was supposed to be delivered to me on 7th April, but because my office was closed so I got my macbook on 14th Arpil 2009. I would like to ask if I can return the current one and get a higher level one which is macbook 13 aluminum (2.4 GHz), as I found that the backlight keyboard is great and I want my macbook with faster performance. In fact, I returned my macbook to Apple before because there was a scratch on the keyboard, and Apple gave me a new macbook 13 aluminum which I am currently using now. So because I got my macbook on 14th instead of 7th because of the delivery problem, base on the 15 days policy, should the date starts on 7th or 14th? And am I suppose to return it and get a higher level one, i am willing to pay more for that.
    Thanks!

You'll need to contact Apple on that. There are a few ways they can handle it. First of all, they usually consider your original purchase date for returns. If you have had yours replaced, the replacement date is not usually considered the original purchase date... so you're likely past your 14 day return period. If they make an exception, as you know, you typically have 14 days to make a return... that return period should commence on the date you accept delivery of the product. Provided you have documentation to show when the product was delivered, they may commence the 14 day period from that time. There is also generally a 10% restocking fee for returned products. The only way to know for sure is to contact Apple. This is just a user-to-user forum and Apple will not respond directly to comments posted here.

  • Firefox download maxes out at 2.2 MB/sec per file with out download accelerators ..... WHY?

question is straight forward... with download accelerators each file goes way higher ... i have had it go to 25 MB/sec with "down them all"

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Blacks Out Without Warning

Quick Summary of Problem: My MacBook Pro is currently shutting down without warning. It would be more accurate to say that the screen goes blank but the machine remains on as can be heard by the fan. Nothing resolves it without powering down and restarting. It has occurred when attached to a power source or via the battery.
My machine specs: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15” with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/nVidia GeForce GT 330M with 512MB, anti-glare 15” screen with max resolution 1680 x 1050). Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 2013-001 Security Patch installed.
I have AppleCare which commenced when I first bought the machine in July 2010.
System Profiler says my battery condition is ‘Normal’. Cycle count: 610.
Detailed Summary of Problem: Back in January, my MacBook Pro shut down several times without warning. Each time, I was creating selections on high resolution imagery in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Not long after, I saw the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ relased on Feb 12 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633) and installed it via Software Update. By coincidence or not, my MBP behaved much better afterwards and the seemingly random blank screens requiring a restart disappeared.
But then I installed the ‘Security Update 2013-001 (Snow Leopard)’(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1642) via Software Update and that’s the only thing I can really remember changing to my system. Since then, the black-outs have reappeared. As before, I was usually using Photoshop and working with high resolution imagery. However, one time the machine blacked-out, I was simply doing a two-finger scroll on the built-in trackpad whilst in Chrome (Version 25.0.1364.172).
The blackout has occurred twice now not being connected to power, and twice with it being connected to a wall socket. Needless to say, I lost work in Photoshop (even though I’ve begun to save more regularly) and now it feels like it’s a ticking time bomb and I don’t know when it’s going to go off.
One thing I’ve found rather odd is that in the crash log, the kernal version doesn’t seem right for Snow Leopard:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun  7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386
    System model name: MacBookPro6,2 (Mac-F22586C8)
The full crash log can be found at the bottom of this post.
    Fixes I’ve tried:
    1) Resetting the NV-RAM has done nothing. (was suggested
    2) I’ve tried reinstalling the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ by downloading the manual installer from Apple, however it now says ‘Alert: This software is not supported on your system’ which in a way makes sense given I’d already applied the firmware update, but a more accurate message along the lines of ‘This firmware update has already been installed’ would be more reassuring.
    3) If all else fails, I could resort to copying over a backup I created with Carbon Copy Cloner, which was done before I reinstalled the 2013-001 Security Update for Snow Leopard. But that’s a bit of a headache too, because my documents I’ve updated since the backup will be out of sync. Another reason this isn’t a great solution is that I can’t take advantage of the 2013-001 security update, nor future ones.
Any suggestions? There’s probably no good time for something like this to happen, but this is a particularly bad time – I’m currently beginning design and finished art freelancing and brushing up on some applications I haven’t used in years. Nor am I going to make an impression meeting with recruiters without my folio being presented from my MBP.
I’ve already booked a Genius appointment 2.5 days from now, but all help and ideas greatly appreciated!

I am sorry. The page that came up has an AD for issues with a 13" MacBook Pro in the corner. I read the AD as if it were part of the article and assumed the whole page referred to the 13" model. My Mistake.
However, the issue described by TS4088 is not a soldering problem. It is a Latent Defect -- a flaw built into certain batches of those chips from the day they were packaged and installed.
If your Mac fails the VST test used to detect this Latent Defect, re-flowing the solder is likely to have NO EFFECT on its performance -- the solution is the remove the defective chip and replace with a good one.
There certainly can be problems in these and other Macs where a re-flow would be beneficial. But I caution Readers not to generalize your solution to Macs that are known to fail VST. Re-flow alone will not solve the Latent Defect problem.

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

You can sell your existing computer using eBay, Craigslist or the venue of your choice. You could then use the proceeds to purchase a new computer.

Depending on the year of the MBP, the hard drive may not be considered a user replaceable item...but you can check the available 1 TB drives at good sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are great to deal with and have on-line videos showing how to do most installation tasks.

  • Dropped MacBook Pro i5 Mid 2012 Fan tries to spin but cuts out, Battery Charging Indicator light showing but cuts out

    Good evening,
A few weeks ago i dropped my MacBook Pro (i5 Mid 2012) and it failed to turn on, battery had charge in it at the time.
When i press the power button nothing happens. I have also tried resetting the SMC, nothing happens.
Next i plugged in the mag safe charger, before i pressed the power button i saw the charging light come on for a second then cut out.
If i press the power buttong, nothing happens.
I opened the back of the machine and tried the above steps again to see what happened.
    1. When i press the power button nothing happens.
    2. When i plugged in the mag safe charger, before ti pressed the power button i see the fan starts to spin for maybe 2 seconds then stops. I hear the hard drive start to spin but that also stops at the same time, during this the front batter charging indicator light also illuminates, but also cuts out.
Its like when you attach the charger it wants to do something but stops everything after 2 seconds. I left it plugged in for maybe 1 min and its just repeated this action maybe 20 times.
At no stage when i press the power buttong, plugged in or not does it react.
I have taken out the hard drive and plugged into another manchine as an external drive and it works perfectly. Hard drive is no problem! From what i can see all connections are ok, and appear to be plugged in correctly, no burn marks or damage visible.
    Logic board failure from impact?
    Thanks,
    Gary

Wouldn't this be better in the Macbook Pro forum than the Pages forum:

  • I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13 with no restore disk; it has OS 10.8.4 I believe there is something wrong with the OS due to I can not install flash player to view Youtube videos and the when we plug in a Bose headset the sound out will work sometimes

I bough a used Macbook Pro mid 2009 that came with OS 10.8.9 it didn't have a backup restore disk with S/N W8******66D
When trying to view some youtube videos; a window would pop up saying "it needs adobe flash player is required for video play back get the latest flash player" but after downloading the file and during installation would have errors and will not installed.....tried to reboot and install again.....but still the same.
The othe thing I had noticed is when using a good Bose headset with mic the sound output would noticed the headset and then switch from headset to Internal speekers and headset.....thinking that there might be something wrong with the plug in port of the computer or the headset.....the headset works with no issues on my iPad so there must be something wrong with the computer.....tried to move the plugin around the port but no change....while the headset is plug in can hear a short clicking noise and the sound would get lost and back again......but with nothing plugin to the port there is no issue with the sound or mic.
Thanks for your feed back......it looks like I have two different issues one is a software issue and the outher is a hardware issue
    <Edited By Host>

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

  • I have destroyed the motherboard of a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. How do I find out the technical specifications so I can give accurate information to someone who buys it for parts?

I recently had an unfortunate incident with a glass of water and a mid 2009-MacBook Pro. 13 inch screen.
According to the techs at the genius bar, the screen, keyboard, chassis and hard drive (160g) were still all good - as were all components other than the Motherboard.
I just completed the complete erasure of the hard drive, but don't have the technical specifications at my disposal.
Does anyone know how I can get them - the guy at apple said he didn't think he could help?
    Serial No. Is available.
    Thanks-
