Maximize RAM

I want to maximize the RAM on my iMac G3 DV SE. I am not sure if I can go up to only 512MB or 1GB. I did try to put in a 512MB in addition to the original 128MB. Apple system profiler does recognize total of 640MB. But the machine was very slow with several applications running at the same time.
My question is, if my G3 is not supposed to go beyond 512MB, should it be able to recognize the 512MB I've put in and add to the total RAM?

The G3 iMac with a slot-loading CD should max out at 1024mb (1gb). If you have a 128 and 512 in there, you should see 640mb. Try taking them out and putting them back in. Also try swapping the location of the two modules.

I want to get mom's old 15" 1.67ghz powerbook ready to stream video with SnowLeopard/iTunes10/the new apple tv.
What should i do/use to install the max amount of ram?
    The two slots are now:
    sodimm0/J20standard 512-pc2-4200S-444
    sodimm1/J23reversed empty

No Powerbook can run Snow Leopard at all, and none can be expected to stream video very well.
To maximize RAM, remove the existing 512MB module and install two 1GB modules.

Do you have a performance program with Mavericks RAM usage?
Have you looked at Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor -> Memory info?
Mavericks attempts to maximize RAM usage to avoid doing very slow Disk I/O.  My 8GB Macbook Pro has 22MB unused, but I have 1.82GB of compressed RAM and 613MB file system cache (file system cache is dynamic in size and grows/shrinks as the OS decides if it is better to cache or use the RAM for applications.
If you are having memory problems, please describe them.  If you are just wondering about Mavericks RAM usage, then understand the Mavericks is attempting to make sure you did not waste any money when you paid for that RAM and is trying to use it to the maximum extent possible.  Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

  • No sound from Color Classic

Hiya. I've got a Color Classic, very used. Sys 7.1, 6 megs RAM, 80 meg HD (remember when that seemed huge?)
It has no sound. None. At first, it had a muted sound, but now even that's gone. No sound if I plug in an external speaker or headphones either. I've opened it up and checked the connections on the speaker, and it looks good all the way thru.
I suspect it's the main board (with the external plugs and all), so I suppose I'd have to replace that if I manage to come across another CC (or maybe just exchange one for the other), but I'd like to know if there are any other possibilities, some simple thing that could be out of whack that I somehow might have missed.
    Thanks

    Brett
Given that you haven't missed the front-panel sound and brightness controls of the CC (the harbinger of things to come on some of the later AIOs), you may have analogue board problems. Although on-board capacitors had gone through a couple of generations by the time of the CC, even the newer types are 14-odd years old now. The audio of AIO 68k Macs is highly sensitive to capacitor degeneration, for which the sole remedy is replacement of the capacitors. Replacement CC analogue boards are getting scarce, so repair is likely to be quicker. Washing the logic board can often make a considerable improvement to capacitor-induced problems on that board, but the logic board is where the better capacitors fail less often.
Colour Classics can be upgraded in various ways. The first, when one is running, is to maximize RAM by replacing the 2 x 1MB SIMMs with 2 x 4MB. (There is 4MB of soldered-in RAM.) The CC will, however 'see' only 10MB of the resulting 12MB. VRAM can be doubled by adding a 256kB SIMM, and a 68882 maths coprocessor (FPU) can be added, if you do enough number-crunching to need one. In this state you could put an Apple IIe-emulator card in the LC PDS slot. If not one of those, a 10Base-T Ethernet NIC in that slot. The emulator cards have gone from USD10 to USD40 on eBay in the last couple of years. The Apple II ware needs a 10MB partition of its own, on say, a larger HDD of about 500MB as another upgrade.
The second kind of upgrade is to replace the logic board. There is already a forum devoted to Mystic, Takky and other hacks of CCs. If you go this way you will not be able to use the Apple IIe card.

  • Will a MacBook Pro with Core 2 Duo / 2.4Ghz run Mavericks or Mt. Lion?

Was wondering if this older MacBook would run the lastest OS. If so, will it be fast enough? Not planning on running any heavy-duty apps on it. Just email, web browsing, Pages, Numbers, maybe Photoshop Elements.

I am assuming thst your MBP is a model identifier 3.1 and Model Number A1226.  It can run Mt. Lion or Mavericks but I would strongly urge you to maximize RAM to  6 GB.  The OSX will run much better.
The correct RAM specifications are;  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The most reliable sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

  • I hate IPhoto 6, is Aperture a choice?

I don't really need a professional program but I hate Iphoto and I need something to organize and edit my photos! I want to eliminate Iphoto all together! It's so slow, I've rebuilt my library and it's driving me crazy!
    Any suggestions?

    Debbie-
    Welcome to the forum!
As to slow, if iPhoto is slow other image apps will also be slow, perhaps slower. The biggest issues for speed are
    • Maximize RAM on your iMac
    • Run current versions of the OS and apps
    • Maintain hard drives less than 75% full (hard drives slow as they fill); 40-50% full is ideal
    • Connect any external drives preferably via Firewire 800, or FW400 if you must, but do not use USB connection which is slow on Macs.
Aperture may or may not be good for you (personally I love the app). What kind of digital camera do you use, and what is the maximum number of pix you might shoot in a month?
Also I strongly recommend that every digital photog with adequate computer hardware spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008), Amazon.com. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual. The time spent learning modern digital image capture workflow via the tutorial is invaluable.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
    Good luck!

  • HDR Pro Crashing

Using Canon 5d MkII Raw files on new Macbook Pro 13" -  HDR Pro crashes and the operation disappears within Photoshop CS5 about 3/4 through the hdr conversion.  HDR Pro works fine with converted TIFF files.  Any ideas what this may occur or perhaps this may be a bug?   Appreciate suggestions...

    Chris:
We've been in contact before about my problem with HDR crashing as well as Photomerge and Load into Photoshop Layers.  What I haven't mentioned since I only recently discovered this, is that these problems are intermittent.  Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.  When they work, they work like a champ. For HDR I can load 10 raw files (NEF) and it works beautifully.  I've successfully loaded as many as 30 files into Photoshop layers. Then it just stops working for the very same files.  I've tried Restart on my computer to "clear the decks" and again sometimes this works and sometimes not.  In another vein I have reported that I have a different problem, in that when I duplicate a Background layer and apply a rotation to the copy, both it AND the Background rotate.  This problem is also sporadic.
Unlike some of others who have weighed in about the HDR problem, it doesn't seem to matter what camera (I have had both the Nikon D200 & 300) or the file type.  I have tried TIFF, JPEG and NEF files.
I should mention that since I've had this problem, I make sure that nothing else is operating at the same time to maximize RAM.  I don't know that me telling you that these problems come and go helps a diagnosis but since I am no computer expert, I thought I would mention it anyway.

  • After 10 years N97 mini made me decide to leave No...

I have it since less than a year. After 10 years of Nokia devices, this one is the worst cell I have seen. I cannot enumerate all the problems I had, also after having it completely reset by support center.
    The main problems are:
-very poor sensibility. In my house several other cells catch 100% signal, and it is frequently without signal and or interrupting calls.
-very unstable: memory full and system error every day, I cannot receive a SMS or do a symply activity without having those errors
-software update never worked. Also after having upgraded firmware at last release, valling it from device always say "all is updated"
-I never installed anything but some simply application from Ovi Store, but a lot of them are no more working and disappear frequently. Ovi store does not allow to reinstall it until I do a hard reset. It's annoying and very tiring.
-Backup on memory cards never worked, so I cannot save my data (Memory full message) between resets. Ovi Suite stopped to work after an update and never could the USB connection working again.
    and ... and ....
I wanted a pro device for my work, not having to continously do manutention, but since 10 months I had to do at least 6 hard resets, each time also to reinstall applications.
This is not the way you can stay on pro market. Goodbye, Nokia.

if you create as much possible free memory on your C drive by deleting everything possible from it (apps etc) and ensure you save all messages to E mass memory , you may see an improvement , also using Ramblow to maximize RAM helps . There are lots of threads here on optimizing the N97 and mini here , and some good tutorials on the AAS web site . The N97 is considered fairly reliable compared to the N97 and with a little tweeking is very useable . If you've already tried all this , accept my apology , if not give it a try , you've nothing to lose except a bit of time , if I can get an N97 to run ok , the mini should be a doddle !
    Good Luck

  • Does the 4th GB of RAM makes any senses in the nem MacBook Series?

Risking to start a neverending troll, and risking, the topic was discussed in exteso earlier, I have to admitt that I am a little bit ****** about a company that merchendizes computers with larger RAM-possibilities than the CPU can handle (to my knowlwedge also RAM doesnt grow on the floor for free...). And in particular, have their local dealer to sell those 4GBs w/o mentioning this limitation (Dataquest company Zurich Switzerland). I actually was so noobish, that i have built in 4GB of RAM in my Dual 2.16 17" 3 months ago, unfortuneately it went broken yesterday, so i wont be able to do any checks myself. The following english statement of Apple dates to October 26, 2006, so maybe it was kinda a 'childhood sickness' that has be fixed in the meantime, and my investement in the 4th MB wasnt for nothing.
What makes me more suspicious is the fact that in the german translation of the topic, which dates to the June 07, 2007, this limitation to 3GB RAM for MacBook Pro (with 4 built in) is still mentioned. Well, because my poor Dual did only survive 3 monthes (dont let em drop on concret floors, Steve Jobs wont give u a new one, although he argued, the comp would survive the drop w/o any scratch...) i need a new one and i wanna be informed about the actual situation at the RAM's front best.
*Does anybody know, do the newest models of MacBooks not only accept 4GBs of RAM, but can they also access them all?*
+The MacBook Pro (15-inch Core 2 Duo) and MacBook Pro (17-inch Core 2 Duo) notebooks have two SDRAM slots in the bottom of the computer, and they come with at least 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM installed into the bottom slot.+
+Although these notebooks will accept up to a 2 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two memory slots, the MacBook Pro will only support 3 GB total memory. If you want to maximize the amount of SDRAM in your computer, install a 2 GB SO-DIMM in one slot and a 1GB SO-DIMM in the other.+
+You can use Small-Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules (SO-DIMMS) that meet all of these criteria:+
    PC2-5300
    unbuffered
    nonparity
    200-pin
    +667 MHz+
    +DDR2 SDRAM+
+You can use RAM module sizes of 1 GB or 2GB in the top or bottom slots.+
+DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo) notebooks: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.+
+Note: If you do install a 2 GB SO-DIMM in both the bottom and top memory slots of the notebook, the About This Mac window and Apple System Profiler will both show that you have 4 GB of SDRAM installed. However, Activity Monitor and other similar applications will reveal that only 3 GB of SDRAM has been addressed for use by the computer.+
    *Kindly, Dhura*

Yes, the latest 2.2 and 2.4 models can see and use 4gb of ram.
The previous model can see 4 but only use 4 maximum - this applies to all Core 2 Duo machines pre-dating the latest ones which are based on the intel "Santa Rosa platform".
The original Core Duo machines could only see 2gb.
These are limitations of the intel chipsets - not of the Apple MacBook Pro per se.
    Best of luck.

  • Please help me figure out how much and type of RAM I can add to my P'Book!

I have a 12" PowerBook with DVI input. The computer tells me it has the following:
    memory; Dimmo/built-in 256MB(size) Built-in(Type) Built-in(Speed)
    Dimm1/ j31 512MB DDR SDRAM PC2100U-25330
    PCI/AGM GeForce FX Go5200 32MB (VRAM - in total)
About this Mac says Processor 1GHz PowerPC G4
    Memory 768 MB DDR SDRAM
Please can someone tell me exactly what I can put in this machine to maximise its RAM? Help much appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Have you checked the specs at http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_12-inchDVI.html . It says you can have a total of 1.25GB ... that means you can replace the 512MB card with a 1GB card to maximize the memory.
If you're going to upgrade your memory, recommend Crucial, Kingston (not their value ram), or Samsung. You can also scan the discussions for other memory that has worked. Our Powerbooks are picky about what memory works ... a case where cheapest may not be the best choice. Crucial guarantees it's memory will work when chosen from it's memory selector on it's web site.

  • Can I install 10.4.11 or above on my G4 Titanium 400 mhz with 512 megs ram?

    Hello,
My wife and I are trying to determine if we can both find to purchase, and install 10.4.11 or above on our Titanium laptop. She has recently bought the Adobe Creative Suite CS 3 and it requires 10.4.11 or above. I'm pretty sure we can add more ram at a reasonable cost but are trying to determine if we can even install 10.4.11 on a machine with a processor that is this slow.
I'm not too concerned about it running CS applications (photoshop, illustrator,in design) at top performance. It's really more of a secondary computer for us at this point. As long as the programs would function we would be fine. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
    Cheers,
    Vance

Hi, Vance. I believe you can still order Tiger directly from Apple, by telephone only, by calling 1-800-692-7753.
You can certainly install Tiger and update it to 10.4.11 on your Powerbook, and you can maximize its RAM to meet CS3's minimum requirement of 1GB. But you'll be running it on the second-slowest of all G4 processors, with marginally adequate RAM, and with a really antiquated and underpowered video accelerator that (like all notebook computer video cards that I know of) can't be upgraded. So CS3 not only won't be running at top performance; it will be running at rock bottom performance. You may be able to live with that, but doing so will certainly be harder if you also run CS3 on another, substantially faster machine whose performance will contrast sharply with the Powerbook's.
Years ago, I upgraded my 225MHz PowerPC 604e desktop Mac to a 500MHz G3 processor and a bigger, faster hard drive. I was also using a 166MHz Powerbook 1400 with a PowerPC 603e processor at that time, and it was a third or half as fast as the desktop Mac for most ordinary purposes until I upgraded the desktop. After the upgrade, the desktop was at least eight times faster than the Powerbook in real-life processor- and disk-intensive uses. Using the Powerbook (which had been tolerable enough before) suddenly became unbearable, with the result that I soon replaced it.

  • Ram Issues with leopard

    Hello,
I am a very happy owner of an 3.06 gh imac and love it .
I upgraded the ram to 4Gb.
imac accepted it and it works well.
But ram fills up so quickly , amazing.
Like when i imported pictures it used all 4 gb of ram while importing.
Also it uses ram for apps and then when i quite the app the ram usage in the activity monitor doesnt go back as it was before like somehow still shows used.
Is there any program to check if my installed ram is well used?
It seems yes but then why is so quickly used?
and why it doesnt show availble as before using app , when i quit app?
If i dont upgrade to 4 gb , would it mean that my system wouldnt run?
As now the machine allways uses more then 2 whenever i open a few apps.
Before the upgrade for the same apps it used less then 2...
Also windows xp under vm fusion .. when i use it again the ram is over 2 gb .. would it mean the without 4 gb of ram i wouldnt be able to use fusion?
    I dont understand..
Thank you a lot for helping me on that, and also with a program to test it.
    Regards

You should not worry about free memory unless your system is spending a lot of time doing pageout I/O.
Any operating system that maintains a lot of free memory is *wasting your money*. The operating system should maximize the use of memory so that you get the best performance for your money.
Mac OS X will use memory for a file system buffer cache. It will keep previously executed program code in memory just in case you quickly re-run that program, so it does not need to read it back from disk.
Many programs, especially programs that process graphic images will consume large amounts of memory. That memory may remain as file system buffer cache.
All cached memory or is available, the same as free memory, anytime the operating system need it for something else.
If you are concerned that your performance is suffering, you can run the following utility from an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session:
    sar -g 60 100
This will report the pageout operation every minute for 100 minutes. If you have mostly zeros then you enough memory. If you see sustained pageout numbers over an extended period of time, especially if you have high numbers, then you would benefit from more memory, or running fewer high memory demanding programs at the same time.
Remember if you always have lots of free memory, then your OS is wasting your money

  • Ram for Asus P9X79 WS & i7 3030k G.Skill responds!

Many of us have had difficulty finding high density ram kits that would be compatible with our planed systems.  I have included below my correspondence with the G.Skill Tech Support Team in hopes that it will shed some light on this issue:
    Dear Sir:
Will the following Ram kits work with an Asus P9X79 WS LGA 2011 motherboard and Intel i7 3930k processor and Windows 7 Pro 64bit operating system?
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10Q-32GBZL
    DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
    Timing 10-11-10-30
    Cas Latency 10
    Voltage 1.5V
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C11Q-32GZL
    DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)
    Timing 11-11-11-31
    Cas Latency 11
    Voltage 1.5V
Are there any other ram kits that you believe would be more compatible?
    What about this ram kit:?
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL11Q2-64GBZLD
    DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)
    Timing 11-11-11-31
    Cas Latency 11
    Voltage 1.5V
I am planning on overclocking.  The computer will be used for video editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.
Will the faster ram kits, (2133 speed), provide a significant improvement?
Thank you much for any advice you can provide me with,
    Wylin
Dear Customer Those are perfect kits for your motherboard and CPU. DDR3-2133 has a greater bandwidth, but it is necessary to overclock the CPU to fully take advantage. Thank you
    GSKILL SUPPORT
    Dear Wylin Tjoelker,
Your setup can go up to 2133MHz for DDR3 memory kits. However, since your purpose is for Premiere, a full 64GB would be a priority over frequency increase to 2133MHz. In other words, it is better to not run out of memory, than render a few seconds faster.
Regarding the differences between 1866MHz and 2133MHz, we would have to say not much. On artificial benchmarks, going from 1866MHz to 2133MHz result in about 3-5% performance increase. In real world scenarios, this would translate to only a few seconds difference of rendering.
We would recommend you to look into our 64GB at 1600MHz (F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL) if you’re looking to maximize your memory capacity while saving a little bit of cash. However, if price is not a problem, then you can consider our 64GB at 2133MHz (F3-17000CL11Q2-64GBZLD).
If you are considering 32GB, then any of our 1866MHz would be a good choice. 2133MHz’s performance increase may not justify the price increase.
Please do feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions. Thank you for choosing G.Skill!

    Dear Tech Support Team,
Thank you much for your very complete and helpful response!
I searched for the more affordable 64GB kit "our 64GB at 1600MHz (F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL) " but have not been able to find it.  New Egg shows it as being "Discontinued" and out of stock.  Is it going to be replaced by a new model kit of 64GB 1600 or 1866MHz ?
If not then I will go with the 32GB 1866MHz kit: F3-14900CL10Q-32GBZL
Thanks so much and all the best to you,
    Wylin Tjoelker
    Dear Wylin Tjoelker,
We asked around for you. It seems like all our F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL memory kits in stock have all been sold out, ordered by various retailers around the world, and would require some time to manufacture a fresh stock of the memory kits. At this time, we are unsure when Newegg would have a fresh stock for the F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL memory kit.
If you are pressed for time, then 1866Mhz 32GB memory kit would probably be the best for you right now. Otherwise, there will be a temporary delay for an unknown period of time for the 64GB 1600MHz memory kit.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding and support.

    Dear G.Skill Tech Support Team,
Thanks so much again for the complete and helpful information!
    You guys are Fantastic!
    All the best to you,
    Wylin
I also contacted Asus chat and asked the same questions.  They referred to their ram compatibility list that was released about the time they first started marketing their motherboard and that does not seem to have been updated to include current 32GB or 64GB kits.  They also recommended that I check the ram manufacturer's compatibility lists.  So they did not provide any info that I didn't already have.
An article on the Corsair website about memory compatability and whether one should fill just four of the motherboard's slots or fill all eight of them was also quite well written and very helpful:
    http://www.corsair.com/blog/corsair-memory-upgrade-resource-guide-2010/
One added benefit to the G.Skill Z series ram kits is that their heatsinks are short enough to fit underneath the very effective and quiet Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 cpu cooler.
    Hope the above info helps.
    All the best to you,
    Wylin Tjoelker

    Wylin,
Have a look at Planning & Building a New System where I use the 64 GB 2133 kit and take a look at the Benchmark Results pages as well.

  • Ram utilization with 64 bit operating system

Attached is the current configuration of my 8.1 Pro PC & I have a question regarding RAM utilization with 32 bit programs running on this PC.
It has been my understanding that the 32 bit OS (XP Pro), at best, would be able to only utilize 4GB of RAM memory.
I've recently built a PC for the specific task of running an application which is very CPU & output intensive. The application is a Windows based 32 bit application which analyzes and recovers data from NAND chips.  Input data comes from a 2.0 USB
feed, is processed and is then written to a 2 disk raid array.
Will the 64 bit operating system enable 32 bit applications to utilize more than 4GB of RAM memory?  Any suggestions on how to maximize the processing of 32 bit application on a 64 bit OS would be appreciated.

    Hi,
As far as I know, 32-bit application running on x64 Windows system had a limit of memory address space. The max usage of RAM is 4GB. I also make a test using testlimit:
According to the screenshot, we can find that, 32-bit testlimit only can leak 4051MB memory, while 64bit testlimit can achieve to 5200 even more larger memory.
For more information about this knowledge, you can refer to contents of chapter 9 in Windows Internal:

  • Can I install two different RAM sizes in my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 2.0 GHz

I just bought me a 8 GB 1333 Mhz RAM for my Macbook Pro. I installed it in slot 2 and I installed the stock 2 GB RAM in slot 1. Is my decision good to have two different sizes RAM in my computer. It is showing me I have 10 GB RAM in my system, and I think my computer has become little faster, but t I had expected that it would be much more faster since I have 10 GB instead of 4 GB.

    Boysovereign,
the speed of your MacBook Pro will only increase by installing additional RAM if the apps which you run were constrained by their previous amount of RAM. If they weren’t being constrained by the previous amount of RAM, then adding more RAM won’t affect the speed at which they run.
That being stated, you’ll suffer a minor performance hit by using two memory modules of different capacities; to maximize your MacBook Pro’s performance, you should install two memory modules of the same capacity.
