Maximizing ram use
Hi. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 quad core 2.8ghz mid 2010. I purchased 16 gb of ram from Macsales.com.
I use Photoshop and other applications in Adobe Creative Suite CS 5 Professional, iphoto, imovie, Final Cut Express 4.0, and Roxio Toast Titanium (for burning blu ray movies-- this has taken a long time, like 6 or 8 hours when using my macbook pro-- I look forward to deploying my new mac pro for this task).
I'm using the Snow Leopard version that came with my mac pro (as described in a previous discussion here, this is the only version I can use at this time).
My question is, are these applications smart enough to grab available ram as needed or do I need to manually tell the application to do this? I imagine this may depend on the application-- I'm primarily interested in photoshop, final cut express, and toast.
There is no way to tell the system and applications about RAM usage. Whether they are smart or not, nothing other than hope they are.
16GB RAM may sound like a lot, but depends on your usage.
You can do some to optimize your storage, where scratch volume and other application preferences. There are a number of articles on optimizing your system.

Ram related kernel panics on a MBP (ram used to work, hardware errors-)
hello all
i have a 2.2GHZ intel core duo 2007 MBP, which once ran Tiger and is now running 10.6.3
I had the NVDIA graphic card break down associated with such models, and it was replaced thanks to the extended care plan, here in Paris, so the logicboard is new- I also got a (technician installed) new HDD, and snowleopard
I originally had the 2 1Gig ram, but 1st got an extra 2Gb of danelec ram, and finally another 2GB- it ran fine for a couple year or so-
then, a few months back I recently started getting kernel panics, on tiger- I fist thought they were HDD related, got a new drive installed by a technician, switched to snow leopard-
yet they continue, and they're apparently RAM related, yet what is odd is that they can be reproduced with any RAM combination involving 2 sticks- the original apple 1Gb + any of the two GB ram sticks, the 2GB ram sticks together in any slot-- it's all the same, the screen goes grey and i'm told to shut down the computer
with one ram stick it works, this avoids the issue- but not always
i've moved the ram around, checked the slots, reset the PRAM,yet the issue is still there.
now i know that I should be using paired ram, and will do so in the next coming months when I can afford it- yet what has happened to make the make the MBP seemingly refuse two sticks of RAM when it didn't before ? are the two sticks dead ? or is there an issue with the slot ?
I'd also need to know that this is not a logicboard issue if it's possible- the logic board was changed due to the NVDIA bug, so it's a year old or so-
I'm running it on the 2GB danelec as I type, no issue, the samsung ram works as well, and so does the 1GB apple ram, in any slot, yet two slots of ram causes the kernel panic crash- the area near the ram slot also seems to get very hot-
I ran the hardware test yesterday, booting from the tiger dvd, which was difficult (possible drive issue)
finally managed to boot into hardware test mode (must be a superdrive issue)
running an extended test with the 4GB of ram in there
first pass found an error :
4MEM/9/40 000 000 : bc13950
running the extended testing
extended testing (1h39 min)
no errors found
ran another quick test
error
4MEM/9/40 000 000 : 6b506C4
another quick test :
no trouble found
another : no trouble found
and a last pass : no trouble found
but i did have two errors...
looking the errors up online didn't give anything so far, any clue as to what might be wrong here ? the RAM used to work fine (i've been using these two sticks for over two years), the kernel panics started happening on tiger- got a new HD drive a month ago, installed snow leopard, - used disk warrior and disk utilities, reset the PRAM and did the other tests and it continues- wether i'm running the computer from the internal drive or an external firewire drive-
running the hardware test, i also got two error messages, but on some passes only
if i look into the RAM status through about this mac, it says it's ok - what's odd is that the hardware test found errors, but not systematically----- I'd really like to know what the error message mean, can anyone help ?
i'm getting more and more kernel panics, unfortunately i live in France, so things are slightly less simple than they would be in other places customer servicewise- ie it might not be as simple as showing up at the new apple stores with this 2007 machine--
I need a stable machine to work on and really can't afford repairs at the moment
i'm really stuck with this, my finances got sucked into the last HDD upgrade (got it done by an official apple retailer, ICLG here in Paris, cost me 300 euros), and I thought things would be stable for a while since the logic board was changed (free of charge, which was a great relief) less than a year ago due to the nvdia bug- and now here I am with this--
anyway, here's the last kernel panic report i got, thanks in advance for your help

Photoshop cs5 is spiking ram use and lagging
When I open Photoshop CS5 its sitting idle with nothing open and still using 330,000 MB of ram.
After opening a simple file, fairly small, 40 MB. It jumps its ram use to almost 2 gigs. It then lags very badly when I try to save taking almost 10 min to save a 40MB file. What is going on? I have 4 gigs of ram. Suggestions?function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

330 MB maybe. Not out of the ordinary. This is not svelte software.

Not sure what you mean by "40 MB"... How big is the file in pixels and on disk as a .psd file? Does it have a lot of layers?
A file with a lot of layers can take a long time to save, though 10 minutes is rather excessive.
I did as you said and opened a 40 MB .psd file containing one layer, and Photoshop's commit size went up to 1 GB. Not too surprising.
You can probably adjust Photoshop's memory usage in the Edit - Preferences - Performance menu and get better performance. If you're running a 32 bit operating system you won't be able to use all 4 GB though. Photoshop drives a lot of people up to using an x64 operating system.
Make sure you shut down and restart Photoshop after making RAM option changes.
What else do you have running on your system? Is the RAM being used up by other apps?

Order of Faders, RAM use of EXS, BFD 1.5 v BFD 2
Hi All -
Couple things.
1. I cant seem to re-order the channel strips in the mixer window. Tried all keys, positions etc.
Anyone know how to simply move them around?
2. I read that the new EXS allows you to allocate more RAM, e.g. outside Logic. Is this a fact? Ive tried the virtual memory settings in EXS, and Im not seeing it come up separately in the Monitor application? Looks like when I load it, it simply increases RAM use of Logic.
3. Ive got both BFD 1.5 and BFD 2. Only BFD 2 seems to show up as an instrument. I cant seem to see BFD 1.5 for use as a rewire instrument. Any thoughts?

Hi all
I have been playing around with memory settings for AE CS5.5 and taking some advice from here:
blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/10/please-try-recommended-memory-settings-for-after-effec ts-cs5-and-give-feedback.html
and here:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/734343?start=0&tstart=0
With variety different compositions, and different memory settings I have noticed my 'RAM: % used of 24GB' in my Render Queue window (at the bottom of the window) is always pretty low. Anything between a few % and 25% ish.
Is this just showing me the RAM used for the foreground CPU and not the collective CPUs?
Any info is much appreciated.
Cheers
AWhat happens with MP processing is that one CPU renders a frame and at the same time the other CPU's try and render other frames at the same time. You don't get multiple CPU's working on the same frame. AE doesn't work like that. Most MP aware software doesn't either. The standard multi threading usage is to divide up the tasks and send them to a CPU to complete. AE's 'task' is to render a frame. The MP processing in AE isn't smart enough yet to divide up a frame into pieces and send the pieces all to the renderer. I've been asking for line rendering for a long time. AE builds a whole frame at a time as a single process. That's why AE's MP rendering is a little wiggie. (wiggie is almost buggy)
I'm also saying is that if your project is MP compatible that each CPU can render a frame at a time and that more than one frame may be rendered simultaneously, but if there is anything in your project that is not MP aware each CPU will try and render, get confused because the something like a codec or an effect is not MP aware, and the system will hang until it gives up and tries to render with one CPU. When that frame is rendered AE will start over with the next frame try and send multiple frames to multiple CPU's and try to render multiple frames simultaneously, get confused, fail, and finally render a frame with 1 CPU and then start the process again. This is why throwing in an effect that is not MP aware for one shot that only lasts 10 frames in the middle of a comp would, without that effect, efficiently use MP rendering will cause the render to hang up and dramatically increase render time or fail completely. That's why I seldom of ever have it turned on. -
SQL Server 2014 Standard, but only 2 GB RAM used
Hello,
I just installed MS SQL Server 2014 Standard Single x64 on a Windows 8 PC. It was bought to replace the Server Express because the RAM limitation of Express.
I set min server memory to 500 MB and max server memory to 28672 MB. PC has 32 GB Ram.
Now I start a very crazy procedure/query that is running for hours.
The problem is now that task manager shows:
- SQL Server Management Studio (32 Bit): 0% CPU and 135,4 MB RAM
- SQL Server Windows NT - 64 Bit: 60% CPU and 2.032,6 MB RAM
If I use: SELECT * FROM sys.dm_os_process_memory I get:
physical_memory_in_use_kb : 2124632
memory_utilization_percentage : 100
So why is there Management Studio 32 Bit if I installed it through MS SQL Server 2014 Standard Single x64 installation?
And much more important: Why is only 2 GB RAM used if 32 GB are there and 28 GB should be used?
kind regards
PeterHello,
Could you try to enable Lock Pages in Memory option for the SQL Server service account?

Hope this helps.

MSI ge70 2OE, bad performance, a lot of RAM used
Hello ! I have a problem with my computer. It's slow, even if I'm only on Firefox for instance. Even with no software opened, used RAM can be 30-40% in the task manager. I noticed that I have important Nonpaged pool and cache memory. Here are some pictures :

http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2013/47/1384805709-sans-titre.png (taken 1 or 2 days ago)
Is this a memory leak ? And what are these service host ?
In Starcraft 2, when I got the PC I could play with max settings and now I must play in low with 50-100 fps... Something is definitely wrong.
It would be really nice if some of you could help me. Thank youQuote from: Kokoz on 23-November-13, 03:20:20
Well I seriously doubt it. A 1200€ computer shouldn't be lagging on Firefox, or it's the biggest scam of the century. 40% RAM used when nothing is open is normal ? Moreover, the nonpagined pool is increasing with the time. I think it's a memory leak...
And how do I check if the game is using the nvidia card ?
My GT70 with 16 gigs of ram consistently is using 14.9 GB when I have Steam open with about 40 firefox tabs (most of them this forum actually). That is rather normal. Unused RAM is sort of a waste.
If the laptop is feeling slow, the first thing I would do is get CPU-Z, CoreTemp, and MSI Afterburner. Make sure that all your temperatures are correct, and that the CPU is running at the proper frequency. It sounds like the system is being throttled because it's too hot to be perfectly honest. -
Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?
I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:
Dual 2.7Ghz (G5)
Dual 1.8Ghz (G5)
Dual 800Mhz (G4)
all PowerPC
thanks,
TWithout a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps -
Macbook pro retina, too much ram used & performance problems
i've recently got my macbook pro with retina display, 128 gb i5 intel 2.6Hz processor with 8gb memory, OS Yosemite 10.10.1. problems began to appear the very first moment i've turned it on: at the last step of profile creation (the step where you choose a name and a password of your profile), after i've filled all the fields and clicked some button to proceed, my macbook refused to boot and froze. i've restarted the computer and then it booted just fine. Then new problems appeared: after installing some apps from mac app store, they wouldn't load the first time i open them, - i had to close them and reopen. Once again, this issue wasn't appearing with every app - only with a few ones. I assumed that this was a software issue which will disappear after i update. And well, i didn't observe this problem ever since i've updated the OS. However, i can't be sure that it disappeared.
Also, i monitor RAM consumption using the Memory Clean app. there are like only 3.60 gb free space out of 8. is it ok?
so, what i am asking: should i take my macbook to a store to get it fixed or this problem is just a software and not a hardware issue and i just have to wait?
Thanks@_Macuser wrote:

That is normal. The Mavericks and Yosemite OSXs use as much RAM as is available in order to increase efficiency.. The parameter that you should monitor is 'pressure', not the amount. If it is GREEN, you are operating within acceptable limits. If there is a color change, then more RAM may be required or there may be other issues that may need attention.
so, what i am asking: should i take my macbook to a store to get it fixed or this problem is just a software and not a hardware issue and i just have to wait?
Since you have a new MBP, your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them sort out the issues for you. Your MBP has a warranty, use it.

Ok, I know ram means random access memory. But what is the initial use of ram? My friend said it was used for "loading videos" or "downloading stuff." I honestly don't think that's right. I've seen people boost their ram and applications (like garageband) will run a lot smoother and load a lot faster.
Hey GDF, I can make it even simpler.
RAM is like a car gas tank. Storage= hard disk drive= gas station.
If you have a 10 gallon gas tank, you are going to have to stop and fill up more often, causing your cross country trip to take longer. So if you car gets 30 miles to the gallon, and you are going 3,000, you will need to stop at least 10 times, just to fill up.
Take that same car, with the same MPG rating of 30MPG, but now you have a 20 gallon tank. 20 gallons times 30MPG = 600 miles between stops. 3,000 mile trip only requires 5 stops to fill up.
Yes... very over simplified.
