Maximizing VHS quality importing to FCP

Hi.
I have some old footage shot in SP mode on a full-size VHS camcorder, and I'd like to edit it in FCP. I've done a lot of searching online, but not sure that I have all of the facts straight on VCRs.
First, regarding play heads. What I've read suggests that VCRs featuring 4 heads / 6 heads / 19 micron heads are all designed to perform better with tapes recorded at slower speeds, or to improve the picture during fast-forward and pause. With my tapes being recorded in SP, will I get better results if I go out and buy a 4-head VCR, or is my plain old 2 head VCR going to work just as well?
Second, regarding outputs. I have the ability to import uncompressed SD video thru my BlackMagic Intensity Pro card and breakout cable. I know that component (Y/Pb/Pr) outputs offer the best quality, followed by S-Video (Y/C), followed by composite (single RCA). I can see how that comes into play when connecting a VCR to a newer display, but in my case, does the type of output becoming meaningless, since the camera these tapes were shot with pre-dates component and S-Video? In other words, even if I get the correct machine / cables / adapters to dub using component outputs, it won't turn out any better than using composite, because the original recording was not encoded in a way to allow the video channel to be separated. Is that a correct assessment?
Thanks for your input!
Fred

Regarding VHS playback heads. No matter what deck or number of total heads, only two are used during normal playback; one for the odd fields and one for the even fields. Any other video heads a deck might have are only used during special playback modes such as pause or fast play (forward and reverse). Other (non-video) heads are used for audio (linear and HiFi) and control track.
So-called "pro" VHS decks had 21 micron heads (as I recall), while consumer decks had 19 micron heads. Either will work.
About the best thing you can do for old analog footage is to route the signal through a TBC to correct playback timing errors. Preferably a full frame TBC - but those are rare and expensive. Most TBCs will only correct the first few lines.
As for output; with VHS only having the capacity of recording about 240 lines of resolution, I doubt you'd see too much improvement using Y/C or component cabling over composite. Just keep your cables lengths short enough so you don't introduce any further Y/C delay.

  • Blurring of text once motion file is imported to FCP

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now. I guess this could have been posted in the motion forum as well. When I create a simple text screen (black solid background) in Motion it looks as it should, but when I import that same file into FCP the text seems to lose a lot of quality and becomes blurred. Sometimes the quality is so bad that the crosses on T's and the dots on I's are not visible!
Both motion & fcp projects are set to 25fps. When I open Motion to start a new project I normally leave it to default (pal dv i think)
I'm sure this can easily be corrected so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
    Alex

Still receiving a number of Motion to FCP problems.
Not only is the text blurring when imported into FCP but motion files with for instance a particle emitter/behaviour (such as stars moving towards frame) is taking nearly 2 hours to render & even then when i go to play the file in fcp the timeline freezes with a 'dropped frames' pop up appearing.
    Help?!

  • Avchd imports into fcp 10.0.7 but choppy playback-even after using clipwrap

I am not sure where the problem may be.  I record onto the sd card (16gb sandisk extreme class 10, 45mb/s) from brand new canon m500.  Card is read in FCP X and can import but when I play back everything is choppy.
I am recording as avchd, mxp-used 60i frame rate & 30 frame both had same issue.
I tried clipwrap and that improved the first 5 seconds and then still choppy for the remainder.
When I playback the sd card inside the camera no problem-looks and sounds great.
If I look at the file on the sd card - after putting sd card in macbook pro (mid 2009-handles FCP just fine) or copying to computer it is titled as "private."  I changed the permissions.
I am also using a canon hv 20 (mini dv)-absolutely no problems with import.
Any thoughts or ideas?  I am on a deadline and losing a lot of time.

Thanks Alchroma & digibudIl--Iappreciate the quick reply.
I was able to figure out a solution very similar to the suggestion of changing the playback & optimizing media.  Here is what I set up.  With these setings, the playback of the file before import is still choppy.  After import it is still choppy until the background tasks reach 100%-next to the timecode.  Once 100% then it playsback smoothly with these settings.
I was using the internal hard drive on my macbook pro.  My workflow is to (sometimes) use the internal hard drive and then transfer to external hard drive.  Other times import to external hd.
What was interesting to me about the import process is with AVCHD, is that FCP X recognizes the file from the sd card as an avchd file.  I did not need to save the files to another folder, create an archive etc.  I tried all these with the same result as the simple import in FCP X.
One last question.  The Canon M500 can shoot at a frame speed of 60i and 30.  Is 30 lesser quality or is 60 better in some way.  I will be editing the footage in FCP X.
Thanks again for the help and I hope my experience helps others.

  • After effects animation Codec won't import into FCP

    Hi
I have used After Effects to do a green screen key on some HD 1080i footage.
I then went to export - quicktime movie - animation
I understand that the animation codec is the only way to export with an alpha channel so that I can put other footage in after my nice green screen key.
I set quality to best and frame rate to 25, I also tried frame rate as current and it exports and plays back fine in quicktime movie player, but won't import into final Cut.
The error message is "wrong frame rate"
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am quite new to after effects and wonder if there is something wrong with the way it is seeing the footage as I shot in widescreen and the image is squeezed as for a 4:3 TV aspect ratio.
    Thanks.
    Ajay

    1. Check your AE composition settings (cmd-k) and be sure your frame rate is set to 25... AE uses the frane rate of your composition and not the settings in your export module...
    2. Do not use the "export" command in AE... that is used only for special purposes only (i.e. for using "quicktime exporto compnents" not available under the export queue)...
    3. use the "make movie" or "add to export queue" command instead
    4. You expot module should be set as:
    - best settings
    - animation + alpha
do not specify any frame rate in the export module!! AE automatically uses the frame rate in your composition settings!!
    5. Export and import into fcp...
I never had problems with AE animation+alpha and fcp 6.0.1

  • Losing quality importing motion into FCPHD

Help!! I created some files in motion to use with a wedding video I am currently editing in FCP. The files look great in Motion, but after importing into FCP the quality is really bad- the images look really fuzzy and I will be using FCP to burn the final project to DVD...
How do I need to import the video/images from Motion into FCP to keep the highest possible image quality + not have it effect the final output quality of the video?? Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

Match the format of the Motion project to the format the sequence is set to be, and don't judge the quality of them in your Canvas... need to look at them externally on a video monitor.

  • IMoive Quicktime not importing to FCP

    Hello,
I have a quicktime that was created in iMovie that will not import into FCP. Any recomendations on exporting this differently or what exact format FCP will recognize the quicktimes as when they were created in iMoive?

When I open the quicktime, I "export.." and I only have 10 options or so. Highest quality DV isnt one of them.
Which one do you think is right? I already tried Q Movie.

  • Quality loss from FCP to Motion

    Hi there!
I'm getting a quality loss in the form of compression-based square artifacting when I send a piece of lossless footage to Motion from FCP. If there's a loss everytime one sends files, why would anyone use it? Does anyone know how to keep the footage lossless while sending between apps?
    Thanks!

Patrick, thanks so much for your help. You're all really helpful on here!
Exporting in prores still displays artifacts and they show up when I bring it into FCP (regardless of whether I import the clip fresh or have it saved back from a "send").
    Here's what I tried:
importing clip directly into a new motion file (not sent from FCP) - movie displays with artifacting - upon rendering, rendered clip still has issue - imported into FCP - still shows artifacting
by importing the motion clip with artifacts into FCP and display in the timeline, FCP changes it's settings to match the clip as usual - I then tried importing the original source clip directly into FCP and when I move it to the timeline, it also shows identical artifacts. However, if I bring in the original clip first, so FCP changes it's settings to match it, the motion clip still shows compression.
Assuming the problem is with the transcode, is this just an issue with this video format working with motion? If so, I assume this means our video team needs to use a different codec. We're shooting a lot of green screen for HD video - any recommendations for a better codec?
Also, is this an issue that Apple can address with future versions of Motion?
    Thanks again!

  • Creating animations that will import into FCP

What are some program options for creating and manipulating objects like squares, rectangles and circles that will be used for creating animations to be imported into protions of FCP projects. The final output will be DVD's. Director MX2004 works very well for creating the animations, however when converted to a QT movie and imported into FCP, the animations look like a copy of a VHS tape. (Export settings were component video.) The animations are not acceptable when viewed on both a TV and NTSC monitor. Is anyone successfully using Director for such an application? I would certainally appreciate any suggestions.
    G5 2 X 2   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   G4 15" Power Book

I agree about the material that is coming out of Director being the problem.
The fundamental questions is "is Director capable of this kind of output?"?? I was hoping someone would tell me "this is how I did it" or "It is impossible using Director". All I know is there was some animation from Director in at least top movie a couple of years--I don't remember its name. So someone was able to get animation out of Director good enough for the film industry!
As for other questions you posed. The vector graphics I need can be created and manipulated as I need in Director. The whole project could be done in Director and outputed as a cross platform "projector" from a Mac or PC version of Director. However, there some issues with keeping things "in time" using Director. Using Director for the whole project is "plan B".
With regards to your other questions. In short, I want to animate some very detaliled shop type activities that are hard to video and understand. The animations will compliment the video and will show/simplify concepts needed to learn particular shop skills.
I want to make and market a series of DVD on these shop activites. Yes I know it is not a small project. I have been working on problems relating to everything from copyrighting to the insurance/liability aspects for several years. I also have the hardware & software to make DVD "demos" and examples to "show and tell". Now I need some help getting the stuff to do what I want/need!
FCP is the best option for "putting together" audio, video and amimation before making a DVD.
    Thank you for your input.

  • LiveType .ipr won't import into FCP - File type not recognized

We've trashed FCP preference files, repaired permissions, checked ownership of files on the FWHD, created new LT files on the internal drive to no avail.

This is usually two things: In compatible versions of FCP or a missing element that allows the .ipr files to be imported. I have forgotten what the enabler is but it's obviously working on your G5 or you wouldn't be asking the question. If you create a LT file on your G4, can you import it into FCP on the G$?
(You can search the forum for similar problems, it comes up about twice a month.)
That leaves the problem of incompatible copies of FCP. You have not provided that information. FCP is not backwards compatible.

  • Highest quality import settings for iTunes 9?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;ylt=AooGuxvheq40oC0etoPY8yvty6IX;ylv=3?qid=20090909143724AALIlSP
*What are the highest quality import settings for iTunes 9?*
I just got iTunes 9 and I want to know what the HIGHEST quality import settings are with the exception of Apple Lossless. I usually import cd's as
    AAC
    Stereo Bit Rate: 320kbps
    Sample Bit Rate: 48.000 kHz
    Channels: Stereo
Now when I go into the custom menu and try to set these settings, it gives me an error message that reads the following:
"The selected combination of bit rate and sample rate is not allowed."
I was thinking about using WAV but I want a format that will be compatible with other/future personal media players as well such as Zune's and Creative MP3 players. Right now I have an iPod and don't plan on changing anytime soon. I just want the highest quality sound for my ears to hear.
so, *What is the highest for AAC?*
    *Should I switch to WAV?*
& if you could, *What are highest quality settings for the other formats as well.*

well i personally think you should go with mp3 at 320kbps (max for that file format) main reason for this is that mp3 is compatible with pretty much everything, where as aac isn't although it is getting a bit better. the main difference between aac and mp3 is in the lower bit rates, i.e aac 128kbps sounds equivalent to mp3 192kbps (suppoesdly) but when you go from 192kbps and up both file formats sound basically the same, just a variation in file size. ig you want the highest quality for you ipod i would say 320kbps mp3. anything higher isn't worth it becuase most earphones cant even pick it up, only if you have high quality ones.

  • Motion project imported into FCP looks different...

I have a Motion project that moves 17 magazine covers across a background. When I preview it in Motion it looks great, but when I import it into FCP the mags overlap and run into each other. What could be happening during import and is there a fix??

I'm posting in response to my own question because this may actually be a bug. When I import the Motion project into FCP with the Motion layers locked, the animation is altered. When I go back into Motion and unlock all the layers and import into FCP, the animation is perfect. No kidding, locked tracks and the animation is funky, unlocked and it's fine. Anyone ever stumble on this??

  • Motion animation when imported into FCP comes out as 4:3 instead of 16:9

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a bumper animation for my feature film. I started in Motion 3 created a simple animation and imported into FCP and flagged it for 16:9 but still comes ot as 4:3 when exported to Quicktime. Any ideas as to why?
    Chris

Set the anamorphic flag. Click on you clip in the FCP timeline or browser and type ⌘9. Check the Anamorphic flag.

  • Problems with XML import from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro CS6

    Afternoon everyone.
I'm currently trying to import an FCP 7 project file that I want to now edit and tweak in Premiere Pro (have recently realised i've been using Premiere far more so would like to start making a full switch over).
I've gathered my original FCP project and exported via XML (Apple Interchange Format, Version 5) and imported it into a blank Premiere Pro project. However it gets to the import window, progresses fully to 100% and then throws this error message at me, and I can't seem to figure out why.
I've tried exporting an XML for the whole project, with all bins/sequences/clips etc. I've also tried individual sequences/bins, and none of them want to import.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Adam

Okay, after trying both steps in the document above, the missing codecs/preview presets still aren't available when I go to File>New>Sequence. I guess that's the only way to check if they have installed correctly/activated correctly right? It says it's correctly activated though so not sure why it's doing this.
Are these presets also missing in the trial verison of the software?

  • Problems with conversion and import to FCP

I have some files in m2ts format and convert them to Quicktime using iSkysoft video converter.
When I import to FCP and render where there is a lot of action I get a wavy pattern all over the image (maybe related to interlace) is there a filter to fix this or another conversion program?
    (Im using FCP 6)
Message was edited by: Andreas Sweden

I have tried with MPEG Streamclip that I usually use as well but it will not take the files. I am just trying out iSkysoft for this and it appears to be a descent program.
I have tried Xvid encoding and H.264 (only two options available), I tried to convert to .DV format as well but with same result.
It appears that the material becomes interlaced twice on top of eachother
