Maximum audio tracks per recording

How many audio tracks can be recorded together in one recording session?
I use a Macbook Pro 2012 Version
HDD      500GB 5400rpm
RAM      4GB

Yeah, you're not going to get anywhere close to that using your 5400 RPM system drive. I use a LaCie 7200 RPM drive over FireWire 800 with great results. If your machine supports it, consider getting a Thunderbolt drive. In any case, recording to the internal system drive its the least desireable option.
Also, the number of tracks that you can record at one time depends upon the capabilities of your interface. Playback is more dependent on your disk speed and bus bandwidth. In other words, if you have an 8-channel interface, the max number of tracks you can record in any single pass is 8. Typically, you'll be able to playback a lot more than that, even from your internal drive.
It's always good to experiment on your own when there's no pressure.

  • Is it possible to lock an audio track in "record enabled" mode?

Here's how i write... i set up a drum loop to play for around 20 minutes, then I rec-enable one audio track to record vocals, and then finally, I skip around among hundreds of different midi tracks.
I just hit the down arrow button, and scroll through dozens and dozens of midi tracks. I quickly hit the keyboard to listen to the sounds. If i like a particular sound, i just want to hit record, and instantly record my vocals along with the midi performance.
Unfortunately, when i hit record, the vocal/audio track doesn't record. Right at the moment when i find an inspiring sound and hit record, the vocals just don't record.
I'm forced to scroll miles up the arrange window, to find
the vocal audio track. It's still blinking the red "rec" button, but this is misleading. It's not actually record enabled. I have to hold down shift, hit it once to turn it off, then hit it again to re-activate record function.
Only then can i record the midi AND vocals.
What I want and need is sooooooo simple to offer as a function, yet totally ruinous to my creative flow if it's not possible. (I used to do this easily on the far inferior
    Cubase VST 5.1, OS 9)
Is there a way to record enable an audio track, so that,
until I specifically disable the record function, it's
ALWAYS ready to record the second I hit the record button?
Even after I've been hitting the down arrow to audition
    various midi channels?
    MacPro 3ghz, 8 gig RAM, 3 raptor drives   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Logic 7.2.3, Kontakt 2 soft-sampler, RME 400

I tried to build screensets like you suggested. If I could
get this to work, I think it would be a great solution, but
    I'm having serious problems.
I opened a separate mixer, with just the single vocal/audio
    track showing.
Then I opened the main mixer, which has all the faders.
If I record-enable a midi track, and then hit the record-enable button on the audio track, the midi track becomes un-enabled. Incredibly frustrating.
The only way I've been able to do it has been to record-enable the vocal track, and then start recording.
Only if Logic is actually recording, can i then record-enable the midi track without deactivating the audio
    track.
A big problem is, that when i click to record enable the
vocal track, the arrange window jumps all the way up to the
top, where the audio track is. THen i'm forced to travel
down, to re-find the midi track.
You mentioned in your post that the mixer needs to be
"unlinked". HOw is this done? Will it be possible for
me to click on the record-enable button on the mixer's audio track without the arrange window jumping to that track?

  • Maximum audio tracks?

firstly, i used the template, 24 track recording, so i have 24 tracks on screen.
but i filled 8 of them with recorded audio, so i went to track 9, and there are no controls in the slider column at the side. i looked in the mixer window too, and there are no controls there either.
i really need more than 8 tracks to record on, because i hate bouncing tracks, only to find that i want to fine tune at mixdown.
is 8 the maximum amount of recordable audio tracks that express allows?
i'm using an edirol fa 66 as my input device, is this limiting it?
i only record using audio files.
p.s. i tried to move audio events into the empty tracks, but they dont play.

    Hi there,
There's a conceptual issue you need to grab hold of.
There are two separate things in Logic that are called tracks. The first is a horizontal strip on the arrange window. A track on the arrange window is a container for music (audio or MIDI). Think of it as a bucket where things can be stored but the bucket doesn't say where the information came from or where it's going to.
The second thing called a track is better called an "Audio Object". This type of track is the same as the Tracks that you define when you run the Setup assistant or when you go to Audio > Audio Hardware and Drivers. These are used to define routing and are alternatively called Channels.
If you want a "bucket" to be useful, it needs to be given a channel and you do this by click-holding on the LHS of the arrange window, to the right of the word Channel. It's there that you give each bucket an identity.
By the way, Logic might know about 24 channels but you can set up your arrange window to have only 4 buckets, if you like. So, there is no 1-to-1 correspondence between the tracks on the arrange window and the tracks in the Environment, which is where the routings are defined and stored.
You'll need to make sure that each of the tracks in the arrange window has its own routing channel.
From what you describe, I think you have some tracks in the Arrange Window that are not assigned to a routing channel. Click hold and reassign them. If you're not sure about how many routing tracks you have set up, click:
Audio > Audio Hardware and Drivers
and make sure that you have 24 set up in that window.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Why can't I enable an audio track for recording? (It won't let me)

I want to record VO but PP won't let me...
On Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite in System Preferences:
    • Sound Input is set to C-Media USB Headphone Set (an Alesis usb mic...works fine for VO in Final Cut Pro 7)
    • Output is set to Headphone port
In Premiere Pro CC Audio Hardware Preferences:
    • ASIO Hardware is set to "System Default Input/Output"
    • I have also tried "C-Media USB Headphone Set but this, too, doesn't work
    • With "System Default I/O" selected, Output Mapping is set to "Adobe Desktop Audio" (only choice), and shows:
         • "Built-in Output: Headphones 1
         • "Built-in Output: Headphones 2
         • "C-Media USB Headphone Set: Front Left
         • "C-Media USB Headphone Set: Front Right
all four of these have a couple of square icons to the right.
In order to record VO, I first need to "enable track for recording" in the Audio Track Mixer. There are no in or out points set in my timeline and the tracks are not locked or solo'd or anything. So why can't I select the audio track I want to use to record VO? I click it but there is no response. I just want to know why this software is not doing what it's designed to do.

is I learn still around -? That was VERY HANDY!

  • How to enable Audio Track for recording podcast

I'm trying to use Garageband to create podcast in iLife '06. When I select female voice and the red record button, I get this message "No Audio Track is enabled for recording". Adding new track from the Tracks menu does not help. Can anyone help please?

  • Engaging audio tracks for recording

I'm using multiple instruments to record drums, but whenever I engage multiple audio tracks it doesn't work, example. I'll engage tracks 1 and 2, and then when I go to engage audio track 3 audio track 1 disengages without me doing anything. This will happen in pairs of two, allowing me to only be able to record to audio tracks at a time. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
    G5 2GHZ   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   2.5 GB Ram

following jords reply that happens because that's your currently selected inputs,
if your audio interface allows you to have more than 2 inputs if you select 3 and 4,5-6 etc
on the following audio tracks channel strips you will be able to record on more than 2 mono channels and so on.

  • Naming audio tracks when recording??

Is there a way of naming audio tracks so when you record them the actual name of the track exists in the audio folder??
When you record in an audio track in logic for the first time, it prompts you to name and select where the audio track will be saved. Now whatever tack I record I end up having the same name for ever track..

I did wonder if I should edit my answer with more detail
In the Set Audio Record Path box if you check "Use Audio Object Name For Filename" then the name of whichever track you have selected and and are recording to is used.

  • Maximum audio tracks possible?

    Hi all
Sorry this may have been answered somewhere before recently but couldn't find an entry in the discussion database.
Has anyone ANY idea how high we can fly with numbers of audio tracks on 8 core 3 gig with 10 gig of ram? (my spec below)
I expect it's down to hard drive speed (my audio drive is 7200rpm)but I'm about to mix a huge number of stems ..... all made up of 5.1 interleaved stems and I'm also using some Kontakt3 & PLAY sample stuff on another drive?
Anyone got any idea how many "ish" are comforably achievable?
I'm looking at using in excess of 12 x 5.1 interleaved on some passes (that's 70 audio tracks) ..... should that still be small fry?
Anyone got any guiding lights of experience?
    Many thanks
    Dick

ok, so i just tried again with a different type of cd-r, and the burn finished, but it still took about 20 minutes, which is significantly longer than it used to take. any ideas?

  • Can't enable recording for Audio tracks with H2 Zoom

I'm running Logic Express 7 on a Macbook Pro Intel.
I used to record vocals with the H2 Zoom as an external mic. But since I ran an update on Logic, I can no longer enable recording for Audio tracks for recording as soon as I connect the H2.
Interestingly, it let's me only choose an H2 output driver.
Connecting the same device to Garageband I can choose both, H2 output driver and H2 input driver.
Anyone else facing this problem? Advice is greatly appreciated.

You have to set it up using the aggregate device editor (utilities folder). In the utilities folder open AUDIO MIDI setup. From the menu select Audio>Open Aggregate device editor. Add a new aggregate device and name it zoom. Selelct H2 auidio in and H2 Audio out. Check the clock next to H2 Audio out only. Make the Zoom aggregate device you just created your default input in the systems setting area of the audio midi setup form. Close Audio Midi Setup and return to Logic. You may need to restart logic. You should now see "Zoom" in Preferences>Audio> Core audio> Device and you should be able to record using the H2.
    Hope this helps

  • Problem recording 5 audio tracks in one go

    HI
I have audio tracks 1 - 5 on logic assigned to tracks 1 - 5 on my mackie mixer. Though when i go to click all the record buttons so i can record 5 audio tracks (live drums) in one go it wont let me. For example The record button only lights up red on one track, ie audio track one. When i click the audio track 2 record button that lights up the track one red light goes out.
Has any one got any advice, i cant record all my tracks in one go,
    Thanks

Your inputs need to be 1 - 5... on your channel strip, right under the i/o there is a little gray box that displays, the input, if all the channels have the same inputs, then only one track will rec enable at a time.select your inputs according track 1 should be input 1 track two should be input 2 ect. • How can I record Audio while listening to another Audio Track?

I wanted to record a duo with both parts played by myself but I can't get Logic EXpress 8 to let me hear the previously recorded Audio track while recording the second Audio track. I do have an Edirol UA-25 and thought i had it set up to make that possible.
If any of you know the answer I would appreciate it greatly to have an answer to such a basic operation, or is Logic so far behind that I will HAVE to upgrade to Leopard and buy Protools?

    Hello,
as far as i know, the advanced mode of the EA-25 requires you to install the original Edirol driver. The simple mode has basic core audio support, but the advanced mode allows MIDI and more than 44.1 kHz.
However, you shouldn't deselect Advanced, if it works okay - leave it on!
Just look if the "Digital in" switch is set to off, and set the small selector switch for the sample rate at the back to 44.1 kHz. With these settings, you should be able to play back and record at the same time. If not, the problem is not the UA-25.

  • 4 Audio Tracks?

I have had Logic Express 7 for several weeks and have just tried recording audio only to discover I can't create more than 4 audio tracks. Is this right or am I missing something?
If this is correct, I have read through all the specifications in detail and cannot find any mention of this anywhere.
    Andrew

    Go to:
Preferences>Audio>Drivers> Set Maximum audio tracks up to whatever you want it to be. Try restarting logic.
Then if you still can't create more than 4 tracks go to the tracks menu and "Create Multiple" enter number higher than 4. Or go to the mixer, hit the "Global" Button on the left, double click the tracks you wish to add to your song.
    Hope this helps.

  • Audio Tracks :: Stubborn Placement

I have the video's audio in Audio 1.  I am trying to drag a sound file out of the project box into "Audio 2" in the timeline, and instead it wants to overwrite or overlay the wav file over Audio 1.  I tried holding ctrl, but that just put it in Audio one and split the audio and video in half.
How do I put the audio clip into Audio 2, beneath Audio 1 in the timeline view?  I want to manage both audio clips separately and not merge them.
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

To tell how an Audio Track is defined, look in the Audio Track Header. There will be a single "speaker" icon for mono, a double "speaker" icon for stereo and a "5.1" icon for DD 5.1 SS Audio.
If you do not have the proper Audio Track available, you can do one of two things: create the necessary Audio Track (per Curt's suggestion), or just drag your Clip below the Master Audio Track, and the necessary Audio Track type will be created for you.
Good luck, and glad that you got it sorted,

  • Audio Track Panning

    Hi
I'm re-doing my autoload template in LE 8, and have a question. I'm sending 3 audio tracks to an aux track for effects processing. The audio tracks are set as mono tracks. When I record a region to these tracks, there's no panning on the individual tracks, only on the aux which I'm using as a submix. The Audio Instrument tracks I'm doing the same thing with don't behave this way. There's no stereo option at the bottom of the Channel Strip for the Audio Instruments, but panning is available on these individual tracks as well as the aux submix. I assume I'm not understanding something about what's going on with stereo and mono tracks, and about why Audio and Audio Instrument tracks don't act the same way. Any help?

+"When I record a region to these tracks, there's no panning on the individual tracks"+
Surely this is normal on Audio Tracks being recorded? Panning might be confusing (especially if you're recording with your headphones off one ear, as is quite popular)…
Could you be really clear about which Window you are looking at for each of the stages you describe? I'm not sure there actually is a problem here at all… in fact, you haven't really said specifically: what is the problem?
(Not trying to be hard on you here; just trying to follow what you're saying so we can sort it out without too much guesswork at our end.)
