Maximum duration of a piece in GB 08

Hi there,
in previous versions of GB the maximum duration of a piece was something like 1 hour and 6 minutes (if I remember correctly). Is there a similar restriction in GB 08? I am taping my lectures and they are usually longer than 1 hour.
Many thanks in advance, Kay

Dear kay,
When building the World Trade Centers, the project manager famously limited all meetings to 17 minutes! I am not sure what you are lecturing about, but it may be that the technical limitations of file size in GarageBand could be viewed as a gentle reminder to get to the point.
I believe John Cage wrote a piece of music that is currently being performed. It takes around 1,000 years to fully perform. Every hundred years or so, the musicians play another note. Sadly, the length of this piece exceeds GarageBands' ability to record it in one pass. (start record in 2007, end in 3007). At the same time, no one is forcing a room full of students to listen to it from beginning to end.

  • Maximum Duration on single-layer DVD?

Does anyone know the maximum duration or movie file size that can fit onto a regular single-sided DVD when producing a DVD in DVD Studio Pro?
I poked around using various search terms but found nothing.
    thank you!
    r

As Eric said, you can really fit loads onto a DVD-R if you compress it hard enough. You can even use MPEG1 and get even more on there, although the final quality won't be great. Compress all images, audio to AC3 and so on too - it's all about how small the 'fixed' assets are, how much space you have to play with and how to compress the video you've got so that it fits into that space.
I have never seen a precise rule for fitting video to a disc... If you want 3 hours, use AC3 at 192Kbps and compress at around 3.15Mbps and it should work. If you want 4 hours, drop the compression to 2.3Mbps... remember that the lower you go, the poorer the final result.
How about using Half D1 compression? Tools like Bitvice can create this - you get a better quality than MPEG1 (IMO) and yet about the same file size.

Does this issue occur on Outlook, OWA or both?
About "Also noticed it can let me book double meetings and don't get no warning email from the Room mailbox",
I suggest configure Maximum conflict instances for testing.
Maximum conflict instances   Use this box to specify the maximum number of conflicts allowed for recurring meetings. If the number of instances for a recurring meeting in conflict exceeds this number, the recurring
    meeting request is declined.

  • Error Message: Motion menus exceed maximum duration

Our iDVD has one Main Menu with Nine Submenu's. We used the Reflections Theme. All these have motion menus, for consistency. Each is set at a loop duration for audio of no more than 45 seconds. [10X45=450 secs or 7:30 mins]. The menu screeen allows for 8 image drop zones. We put a photo in each zone, and they scroll by repeatedly behind the menu titles/text.
[Each of the Nine Submenus contains one slideshow and one sub-submenu. These sub-submenus are not motion menus.]
When we go to burn the disc, we get the error message above. Our duration on the Best Performance setting is 29:53 mins vs. the allowed 7:30 mins.
Questions: Why does Project Info show motion menu duration at 29:53? Is there a way to reduce that by, for example, limiting the number of times the pictures loop behind the text in that theme? Or, should we be using Best Quality rather than Best Performance? (Note: the images are more important than the sound in this DVD.)

We couldn't figure out how to turn the motion off on the submenus. How did you do it?
Unfortunately, I've deleted that project, but... You should be about to click on the Menus button and move the top slider (Loop Duration) all the way to the left. I think that does it. I also had to eliminate music too. I don't think clicking on the Motion button on the main window does it.

  • Maximum Duration

My iDVD project exporting my full 3 hour movie for some reason and is telling me that the project is too big (exceeds duration). I exported the 3 hour movie to iMovie but I add only half the chapters to the iDVD list in iMovie. But for some reason, it exports the original 3 hour movie to iDVD even though I only tell it to do half. Even when I take all clips off of the list, it takes the 3 hour movie and so I cant burn in iDVD. How do I tell it not to do that?

    Hi Mark
Don't really knows what and how You are working but I think I have done
something similar - but may be in another way.
    A. iDVD can only handel movies up to 120 min (may be more if double
layer DVD burner and disc are used)
I make a movie on iMovie TimeLine (less than 120 min) and save the
    rest material on the Shelf.
    - Edit till OK
    - Close iMovie
    - Locate the movie project icon
    - Ctrl-click on it and select show package
    - in this there is a folder - Share Movie
    - in this there is a folder - iDVD and
    - in this there are a QT.mov which I drop on the desktop while holding down
    the alt key. => Copy
    - rename the copy to eg. Film1
    - return to iMovie and build part two
    - repeat as above
    - rename to eg Film2
    Open iDVD
drop Film1 into a selected theme and burn DVD 1
make a new DVD project and now drop Film2 and repeat.

  • Content Exceeds Maximum Duration

Well, admittedly, I've made a really long movie in iMovie. It's over 4 hours, which I am gathering exceeds the limit of a double layer disc set to Professional Quality. I was expecting to be able to save it as a Disc Image or a Video TS folder anyways. My solutions were 1 of the following:
-- save a VideoTS folder and use a video compressor like DVDtoOne to get the file size down.
-- Everyone I made the movie for has a Mac and could just save the file on their computers, if I could export something that is watchable. I'd basically just be using iDVD for the theme.
-- Cut the movie in halves in iMovie...but there are soooo many transitions, I don't want to redo half of it.
Any ideas? Did I just inadvertently dig myself into a hole?
    Thanks!

    Hi
As I see it there are only five possibly sloutions (anyone more ? )
    • Cut Your movie into 2. By first exporting out as a full quality QuickTime .mov
re-import into new project, then cut this in halfs should keep transitions etc. in place
    • Edit it down to under 4 hour and use a very simple menu and no menu-animation.
    • Save it as a DiskImage - then copy this on a Mac OS Extended hard disk and distribute this image as is. (USB memorysticks - I don't think it'll work)
    • From the DiskImage - Copy with a program Roxio Toast™ and set "Fit on one Disk"
    (With a quality loss)
    • Or do it from scratch in Roxio Toast™ (not via iDVD) - This can also squees in more. (Still to a quality loss)

  • Battery issue after enabling iCloud on my new MacBook Air: maximum duration drop from 5 hours to 1.30!

What's up? I moved to iCloud (dammed me!) and the battery of my brand new MacBook Air last about 1.30 h now. What's going on? What should I do now? This is unacceptable

They have an UP TO 7 hour battery life.
The higher the load you put on the battery the quicker it will be depleted.
    Turn off bluetooth.
Turn the screen backlight down to as low as you can stand.
    Turn off the keyboard backlight.

    Don't view video.

  • Maximum video duration on the touch?

    Hi
I've encoded a number of videos for my touch, each with the same settings (MP4, H.264, AAC) and the have been playing fine on the touch.
I've just encoded one however that doesn't work. It's the same settings as all the others, will play in itunes, but when i try and copy it to the touch itunes says:
"name of file" was not copied to the iPod "name of ipod" because it cannot be played on this ipod.
The only thing different about the file is the duration - all the other files were under 2 hours. The file that won't play is 2h 25 long (and 1.3gig)
So im left wondering, is there a maximum duration for a QT on the touch?

I encoded the movie Memoirs of a Geisha for my own viewing on the portable iPod Touch which is 2 hours and 25 minutes. No problems here. I highly doubt there is a time limit unless of course you exceed the space on the Touch. Just curious, are you using an 8 gig or a 16 gig Touch?

  • User - Maximum logon duration, set expiry date ?

Wanted to know whether BPC NW supports user setting of:
Maximum duration logon; does the session become inactive after a certain amount of time in case you do not execute anything?
Expiry date of user; can you set expiry dates and does a user automatically expire when you donu2019t log on for a certain amount of days?

    Hi Ellora,
I don't think if it possible in BPC NW, where as in BPC MS version we have Management Console which gives info. about will  all users who have been online for the given period of time.
In BPC NW we have User Activity. BPC logs user and administrator behavior by recording information about each remote function call made from .NET to ABAP.

  • Recording stopped mas duration for the file has been reached

Has anyone else seen this message, "Recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached" this is happening on 10.6.2 server and client all updates applied. The File from podcast capture is not saved, it just disappears We are using a Hitachi camera. Any ideas?

This problem has been reported before, here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1704655 . For some reason, that thread was marked as "answered", even though it doesn't seem to have actually been answered.
I've just experienced the problem myself. I'm using OS X 10.6.3 with QuickTime Player 10.0 (113), capturing audio and video over FireWire from a PAL VHS deck via a Canopus ADVC-55. I'm using the "High" setting to record in QuickTime Player.
Sometimes I'm able to capture indefinitely long amounts of video; sometimes, though, I get a "Recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached" error after capturing only a few seconds. This variability occurs not only between VHS tapes; it also can occur when using the same source VHS tape (the same parts of the tape, even!) repeatedly.
Apple, this appears to be a QuickTime bug. Please investigate and fix it!

  • How long is this piece?

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how Logic Pro 7 shows the duration of my piece. The smpte time code window would do. But, when I "rewind" back to bar 1, the smpte code says "00: 59: 33: 09.15
Why is that? I don't know how to reset it so that it zeros out at the beginning of the first bar. Very strange.
I just want to find out the duration of my piece somewhere in the transport window.
Any one know how to do that?
    Thanks
    Felixp

    Try this:
In the transport bar, click on the little triangle to bring up the preferences. Then, toggle the setting of the "SMPTE offset" on/off function. this worked for me.

  • NAC guest server and pre-configured duration of accounts

There seems to be a bug in the way the NAC guest server handles the pre-configured duration of guest accounts.
I have followed the manual and I did:
    - Configured 3 durations (24h, 48h and 1 week) under the templates/accounts/accounts durations.
    - And set "maximun duration of account" under User Groups
As I understand I should now be able to select one of the three configured durations when I login as a sponsor.
However I only get the number which I specified under User Group.
The odd thing is that if I change the Maximum duration under User Group, I get this as the only choice (e.g. 14 days).
    Have other experienced this?
    Best regards,
    Steffen Lindemann

You can use any one of the option ie number of days or number of hours.
    For days;
Authentication > User Groups > Add Group | Edit Group includes two new settings for Number of days in the future the account can be created and Maximum duration of account (in days)
    For hours:
User Interface > Templates > Add Template | Edit Template > Accounts > Account Duration

  • "Project Duration" error when burning

I have a 2x Superdrive in an iMac G4 800Mhz, and I am using iDVD (ver. 5.0.1) to burn a iMovie HD (ver. 5.0.2) file to a 2x DVD. When I hit the "burn" button in iDVD, I get the following error message:
"Your project exceeds the maximum allowed content duration. You will not be able to burn your DVD while your Encoder Setting is Best Performance. This can be changed in your iDVD Preferences."
First of all, my project is only 29 minutes long. So, the project duration should not be an issue. Second, when I go into the iDVD Preferences and change the Encoder Setting from Best Performance to Best Quality (as the error message suggests), I am able to begin the burning process, but I eventually get this error message:
    "Error during rendering/encoding."
I have 21 GB (out of 60 GB) of free space on my internal HD, and I have 29 GB (out of 60 GB) of free space on my external HD. The external HD is where my iMovie HD file is located, as well as my iDVD project.
Can anyone help me burn this to DVD?

I can think of two factors that might lead to this problem. the first is that, since your project length is under an hour, iDVD will probably try encoding it using "Best Performance" settings. Check Preferences>General>Encoder Settings to see if this is the case. A quick fix might be to simply change this to "Best Quality" instead, which accomodates longer DVDs.
As for how a 29 minute DVD can exceed the maximum duration of a disc, there is a problem a few people have had with transferring iMovie projects into iDVD (myself included) where the project length mysteriously doubles in iDVD. Annoying for small projects like yours but deadly for those exceeding 1 1/2 hours.
...check your status tab and confirm that your project is indeed 29 minutes still and not something like 58. if your footage has in fact doubled in length please see this post:

  • Default Duration of a video element

    Hi,
when I set the defaultDuration property of a video element it hasnt no function. The video is playing to the end. Is that a bug or a miss implementation by me?

The defaultDuration property isn't meant to control the duration of playback.
Once the media is loaded, the actual duration is used rather than the defaultDuration.
Sounds like what you want might be subclips instead - something like this?
    var resource:StreamingURLResource = new StreamingURLResource(REMOTE_STREAM);
    resource.clipStartTime = 10;
    resource.clipEndTime = 25;
    return new VideoElement(resource);
And now for more than you may want to know about the defaultDuration property:
This property exists in case you want to set the duration for an element before it is loaded.
For example, in a serial composition you might want to play 3 videos, two which are content, and one which is a mid-roll ad.
Each video doesn't get it's duration set until it is loaded - but you want to have a scrubber bar UI element that allows you to move across from beginning of the 1st video to the end of the 3rd video. You don't get the total duration of all 3 videos until they are loaded, which happens "just in time", too late for your scrub bar.
So you can manually set the "defaultDuration" of the video. This manually set duration defines the duration that the element's TimeTrait will expose until the element's content is loaded. By manually pre-assigning a duration to each piece of media, the total composition duration can be calculated. This duration can be used by user interface controls (such as a scrub bar).
    Hope that helps!
P.S. Ideas to improve the docs are VERY welcome. Here are the two places we talk about this feature now:

  • Jerky Playback & asset replacement issue

    Hi,
Just downloaded the trial version in order to see if it corrects some things I needed on 1.5
So appart from the better responce and added features wich are great I have 2 problems (so far!).
Problem No1 is that the playback of the mpeg (*.m2v) file on the timeline and DVD Preview is very jerky and unstable. I used the same assets in 1.5 and playback is fine there.
Problem No2 and major for me is that when I replace assets in a previously created project the asset length doesn't adjust automaticaly. That is not a problem if the asset beeing replaced was longer since I can drag the end of the replacement asset on the timeline, and it snaps to the right length. But when the asset beeing replaced is shorter than the new asset there is no way I can drag the end of it to he new duration. Only way is to delete the m2v from the timeline and re-enter it, but that deletes all chapters and links to allready created menus with it. Is there anything I can do about that? I use asset replacement every day and this is a major drawback for me. I will have to stick to 1.5 for the time beeing...
Anyhow thanks for a great piece of software wich I was much expecting and sure to buy soon.
    Cheers
    Christos

    Christos.
For the asset replacement options that are not working as you expect, try this:
    PROBLEM:
When replacing an asset in a timeline that is longer than the original, it is not always possible to extend the duration of the new clip by dragging it.
    METHOD:
    1. Create a new project.
    2. Import an .m2v file and it's corresponding .wav file.
    3. Make a timeline with these assets.
    4. Click the .m2v or .wav asset in the project window, press Ctrl-H, and replace it with an .m2v file that is LONGER than the original. After importing notice in the timeline that the new length is the same as the old one.
    5. Drag the tail of the replaced clip to extend its duration.
    RESULT:
When you drag the tail of the .m2v or .wav file to extend the duration, the clip 'flickers." If you release the mouse when the clip "flickers" off or when the mouse is beyond the maximum duration of the clip, it reverts to the original duration. The same behaviour is exhibited when trimming the clip.
Note: Although .avi files exhibit similar flickering, you can extend or trim the clips without issue.
    EXPECTED:
The duration of the clip should always be extended or trimmed to the point where the mouse is when the button is released. If the mouse is beyond the maximum duration of the clip, the duration should be extended to its maximum (like PPro).
    WORKAROUND:
    1. Position the CTI at the desired out point.
    2. Drag the tail of the .m2v or .wav file as close to the CTI as possible while it still "flickers" on.
    3. Zoom in on the tail of the clip and repeat step 2 until the clip reaches the desired duration.
