Maximum hard drive physical size for MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 model

I'm planning to replace the hard drive in a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 - its the latest model just purchased.
I've searched the discussions on replacing the hard drive, and I've seen conflicting information on whether the 13.3" Macbook Pro will accept the 12.5mm height drives, or only the 9.5mm height drives.
And Apple support is no help - they don't know.
Can someone confirm exactly, whether the 12.5 mm drives will fit or not?

Thanks everyone - it looks like you've answered my question, and I'll mark it as such.
I think that my confusion is related to the mac terminology that you guys are using that I am not familiar with yet - I'm brand new to the world of Apple and Macs, so I've got a lot to learn ahead of me.
"S.U.", you said "The 12.5 mm drives will fit in all unibody MBP's". What is a "unibody" MacBook Pro? The one I have is the aluminum shell, not the older black or white case that appears to be some sort of plastic.
In another thread, you mentioned that you have 2 drives in your MacBook Pro. Is there really room for more than a single drive inside, or did you have to remove the optical drive and put the second drive in its place?
"eww", you mentioned "And it doesn't affect the computer's warranty". When I talked with Apple support about replacing the drive, they said that there are no user-serviceable parts in a MacBook Pro, and it might void my warranty to replace the hard drive. I pointed out that they have several documents at the "Manuals" section of their website, explaining the exact steps to replace the hard drive (as well as memory and battery too), with no mention of voiding the warranty.
Is Apple support always so out of touch with their own web site and their own equipment/policies, or are they usually quite knowledgeable and helpful? I'd like to think that I can count on them when I have questions harder than "where's the ON button". But to their credit, they did mention that I visit these forums to see if anyone here could help.
"OrangeMarlin", you mentioned cloning the old drive first, and I plan to do that. The MacBook Pro is brand new, and has not been used yet, so there is no user data to be lost yet, but it would still be easier to clone the drive than try to install from scratch and hope that everything gets installed the same way as the factory drive came packed with.
While on the topic of cloning the drive and backups, I have plenty of external drives to do backups onto, but how do I go about doing backups/cloning? I've heard of "time machine", but it looks like I need a whole dedicated hardware system of some sort in order to use it? Or can I use it with any external hard drives? Or is there a better/preferable backup tool to use, and does it come with the mac, or must I get it separately?

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

  • Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

  • Which battery to order for Macbook pro 13" mid 2010

I have a macbook pro 13" mid 2010. I need to know which battery to order from online store to replace my old one. It is very confusing as there is many models of batteries to chose from the online store.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The batteries available in the Apple Online Store are for Late 2008 and older MacBooks Pro, which include removable batteries.
In your case, your MacBook has got an integrated battery which is not designed to replace yourself, so you should take the MacBook to an Apple Retail Store and get your battery replaced for $129.
If you want to replace it yourself, these are the steps > http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2010+Battery+Replace ment/4300/1 You can also get the battery for your MacBook in that website

  • Internal HDD installation guide for MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 model

    Hello,
Can someone please share any step by step guides or instructional videos for installing a new internal HDD in a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 model. Also, please advise on how to format the new HDD as it is an unformatted one.
    Thanks in advance!

To format your new HDD, connect it to your MBP and open Disk Utility>Erase.  Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then clone the data from the internal HDD to the new external one.  You may use Disk Utility>Restore or use Carbon Copy Cloner (third party software) to do the cloning.  Test the new HDD via Startup manager and then perform the swap.

  • MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010 model (7.1): Mini Displayport to HDMI , no Sound

I bought my MacBook Pro on October 2010.
Also, in the SystemProfiler I can see that the "Audio Built-in" has HDMI in the list. And my macBook Version is 7.1 and am having OSX 10.6.7
I recently bought Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720 LED HDTV. And tried connecting the Display using a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI. The Video works fine but cant get audio working. Also, the SystemPreference->Sound->Output has only Internal Audio in there.
Today I even tried with my office LCD HDTV from Samsung and Toshiba. Got the same result .. no Sound.
Where as my Father's MacBook Pro 13" which he got a couple of months earlier than mine got both Video/Audio working on his Panasonic Plasma TV. He is also using the same MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter I am using. But as I live some thousands miles away from home i can't check by connecting the Panasonic with my MacBookPro.
I have been looking out the forums and post all over the internet for any solution or relief but none so far. I still haven't had a clue if its the TV or the MacBook thats having this audio via HDMI issue.
Any, suggestion will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sapam

I have the same MBP Version 7.1 that you have and it also states in the System Profiler HDMI Display port
Output: Connection : Display. Now what that means, im not sure.
But i have also connected an HDMI cable via an adapter made by iWires Tech Link purchased at the Apple store and have the same problem as you, only video with no sound from the TV.
I've looked at the settings that eww has suggested in System Preferences > Sound > Output tab and their is no options available for HDMI out, or Display Audio or anything else for that matter, except built in speakers, and Audio port for sound output.
Which lead me to use the Audio port to send the sound out via an amp and speaker system independent to the TV.
Thats why i researched for the other adapters which send out the sound and the audio through the same adapter.

  • Base speed for fun;lower and upper threshold for macbook pro 13" mid.2010

i have install fun control, and i have modifiated impostation for base speed (fun) lower and uppeer threshold,
what is the parameter impostated by apple?
    thanks
    Francesco from Verona

Fan base speed is 2,000 RPM and increases upon load.
    122-158º F is normal
You have a 13" MacBook Pro, it doesn't also have a dedicated video card (like the 15" and 17" do), only CPU graphics, thus the heat is double in the same location.
This is normal for all CPU graphics machines, Intel or AMD processors. Mac or PC.
Don't use the 13" for intense graphics uses or in hot environments.

  • Possible Fan Issue With My Macbook Pro 13inch Mid 2010 Model.

Lately I've been getting really weird noises coming from my Macbook Pro. I assume it's the fan because I have a little menubar app that monitors my fan. It seems it can't go beyond 2000rpm and the noise coming from it is loud. I don't know if the motor is going bad or what because after a certain amount of time it gets really hot. In the past I would just shutdown my MBP and restart it which would sometimes fix the problem. The first time I had this happen was last year. I took it to a Apple Store where the genius told me there is probably something stuck in the fan because it stopped making the noise. At the time this was still under warrenty and being a student I couldn't afford to get Apple Care. I do plan on taking this to a Apple Store to have diagnositcs run on it. Has anyone else have this problem before and what do you think a estimate would cost to get it fixed?

I'm not sure I undertand the logic of that, but in any case, I would get the case number and/or whatever paperwork you have from the visit, and go back to see if they might still cover it under warranty because the issue first occurred when it was still under warranty.
At the time this was still under warrenty and being a student I couldn't afford to get Apple Care.
I suspect you understand now that this repair could cost more than AppleCare would have cost . . . just something to think about next time.

That's a good plan to have them diagnose it. An estimate of the cost of the repair should be free.

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

If you feel confident, you can do it yourself.
If not, Apple can do it for the small matter of money.
    If you go to http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Find you Mac on this page it has videos that show you how to replace the disk drive.
