Maximum internal drive

In trying to do my home work searching for a new drive, I have come across several posts suggesting the maximum replacement size hard drive for my 12" 1.5 GHz PB is 120GB. I have. however seen other posts from people who have put 160 GB drives in, specifically a Seagate Momentus (exact specs here.
Would this work for my computer? Would I be able to use then entire capacity of the drive (minus the several GB that are overstated)?
Miriam

All depends on which 12" PB you have. I believe the
only ones that support sizes over 120gb is the 1.5GHz
model.
any mac model made after 2002 has the correct boot ROM to be able to address drives beyond the 128GB limit. so I think this applies to all models of 12" powerbook unless there were some built before that year, which I don't recall being the case.
all you need to do is find a 2.5" ATA notebook drive (not SATA) of the capacity you want and it will work. I've looked at the process of how to do it yourself (there is a pdf available on the net with a step by step description with photos), but it looks a bit risky for me, plus I don't have the tools. so I got a pretty fair quote from an authorised mac repair place that are going to do it for me, including cloning my old system drive to the new one. I'll either do that, or get my brother to do it, who has already swapped out a drive on a PB12".
I've found a 2.5" hitachi travelstar 5400rpm 160GB ATA notebook drive that uses the new perpendicular mechanism (better performance under some conditions), which was quite a bit less expensive than the seagate you mentioned. the hitachis seem to get great reviews, so I'm more than happy to go for that one. all in all, it will reduce my battery life by a bit due to the higher spin speed, but having an extra 100GB of storage on that machine beyond the 60GB I'm used to is going to make it a vastly more useful little machine for me for some time to come.

  • Maximum Internal Drive Size

Okay, please forgive me for asking what may seem to be a simple question, but there seems to be some disagreement & I would therefore appreciate a definitive answer:
I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, & according to the specs I was given at the time, & according to research I did when upgrading somewhat later, the maximum size for an internal hard drive in this model is supposedly 250Gb (& you can only have two, although I have seen this discussed… but two is fine for now).
However, in this month's MacWorld I read an article on hard drives which claimed that all G5s could accept 1.5Tb internal Hard Drives.
In which case, "yes please I would like one of those!"
    So — what's the story?

Don't use the term "officially" as it has connotations and implications that are false or wrong, and suggest there really is some hardware or firmware limitation to larger models.
Yes, the original specs unlike other items and software which get updated and revised, never are, to reflect changes or new information.
From a technical standpoint, those aren't accurate or facts, just marketing pamphlet "listing."
There have been drives whole features included things like SSC or NCQ that rendered them incompatible until the "Late 2005" or Quad G5 came out with support for features that didn't exist with 1.0 specification as it existed in 2003 when the PowerMac G5 came out.
Even the names are just chronology and can be confusing to the 'uninitiated' when "well, I bought mine in mm/yy, so is it still X or Y model year?"

  • Whats the Maximum internal Drive you can get and how fast

Well the subject says it all
I'm looking for the biggest and where do i get them?
and is it safe to run OSX on it ?
    thanks guys
I got so many externals and i'm looking to even get 2x500GB for internal if its possible and if its safe
    thanks

i've got two 300GB raid and mirrored as well
so i get enough power but since its raid it takes a lot of memory
performance is not much of a problem anymore, just need more space
    2x500GB internal is my dreams
1 for OSX and any any other sounds that requires to stay on the same drive
then i'll the other for recordings and other samples that needs to be off the main drive
and i'll use the rest of my externals for backups and other important things
harddrive is cheap this days so i'm looking to make the most out of my system for the future
as i'm not planing on getting the intel mac anytime soon so i'm preparing this mac and my other mac as a node to last atleast the next 3-years
so more space is whats important now

  • What's the maximum internal space for Mid 2010 MacBook Pro

Ok guys I'm about to upgrade my internal drive on my MacBook Pro and would like to know what is the maximum space to put in. I'm also gong to replace optibay a 128GB SSD. Is any 1TB 2.5" good?

I suggest that you install the SSD in the same place as your current HDD.  Install the 1 TB drive  in the DVD drive location.
I have HGST 1 TB drives, both 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm.  Both work satisfactorily.
    Ciao.
I also have the HGST 1.5 TB HDDs but they are only available in 5400 rpm versions.

  • Is there a size limit to internal drive?

For some reason I remember there being a size limit for internal drives on the Power Mac, dual 2.0 GHz G5. I have one 250 Gig drive installed, and want to add another 500 gig drive. Will the drive exceed the size limit?
If the size is ok, does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable, reasonably fast 500 gig drive?
    Thanks.

I'm so glad you asked about this. I just bought a G5/1.6 GHz that has an 80GB and I wanted to install a 500 GB second drive but the manual did say that the maximum total between the two drives couldn't be more than a total of 500 GB between the two drives.
Do we know people that have done/are doing this? I use my G5 for audio recording and that's why I wanted a large second drive and I was thinking that since I'd already had the 80 GB drive already in the G5 I'd have to put nothing larger than a 400 GB in the second drive slot so I wouldn't go over that 500 GB limit I read about in the manual.
Excellent news if this really is the case that there's no limit to the size of the additional hard disk.
Since we're on this topic, (I realize this is probably covered elsewhere), but does this same theory apply regarding the 4 GB memory limit that Apple states in the owners manual for the G5 1.6 GHz model?
It's got four DIMM slots for a maximum of 4GB using four 1 GB DIMMS.
Is it possible to use four 2 GB DIMMS and get 8 GB of memory running in these earliest G5's?
The other two other models of the G5 that were released with the 1.6 Ghz were the 1.8 GHz and the Dual 2.0 GHz G5's and they have eight DIMM slots and are capable of using 8 GB.
So I was wondering if this too was due to Apple not having access to 2 GB DIMM memory modules back in those days (2003) that would have allowed the G5/1.6GHz models to run with 8 GB RAM installed in four slots?
Thanks guys, really glad I found this post before I bought a smaller hard disk because of what I read in the manual.
    Best,
    John

  • Maximum internal HDD space on Dual G5 (late 2004)?

I currently have a stock 80 GB and a user-installed 300 GB. I do a lot of video. So I plan to move the 80's contents to the 300, and the 300's contents to a new 750 (Fry's has them on sale this weekend). But I got spooked when I googled for PowerMac G5 tech specs and found one page stating that the maximum internal HDD space was 500 GB between devices. However, no size limit is listed on the Late 2004 PowerMac's tech specs page at http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2004.html .
So, can I go ahead and get the 750, for a total drive space of 1050 GB?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello! OWC lists drives up to 1 T for your machine. There have been some problems with some G5's so if you want to look at an individual drive check the XLR8 drive compatibility database. Tom

  • G4 MDD supports SATA internal drives or ATA/IDE

    hi all
I'm looking to add more internal hard drive power into my G4 MDD and was curious if it supports only ATA/IDE drives or can I add SATA internal drives? I was told it can handle larger than 120GB hard drives and will I need to get a fan to cool them down? Thanks, Web dude

you talk about putting larger hard drives on rear bays only
I looked over what I wrote and don't see where I said that. Can you clarify?
Maximum theorectical data transfer rates for ATA100 (aka ATA-6) are a little faster than ATA66) aka ATA-5) but only if the hard drive is fast enough to take advantage--most new ones are more than that at ATA133. One Wikipedia article I read says that, in the Windows world, ATA66 commonly has drive size limitations of 137GB due to the OS and drive controller limitations. I've not seen this in Macs. Nothing I've seen here or elsewhere says you can't put big drives in the front bay.
I personally like to keep the boot drive in the rear bay in case that drive is fast enough to take full advantage of the faster bus. As 2 x 250G is enough space for me today, I tend to use the front bays as temporary mounts when pulling data off drives from some of our older Macs. Those often end up being smaller, older drives between 10G and 120G.

  • 5400RPM internal drive vs 7200RPM external drive (firewire 800) faster?

    Which is faster?
    13" MacBook 320GB 5400RPM stock internal drive
LaCie d2 quadra 1TB 7200RPM external hard drive connected via FireWire 800.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Need to know exactly what the drives are to understand their data transfer rates & buffer sizes.
The 13" MB uses a 5400rpm SATA drive. Don't know if it's SATA-I or SATA-II. Don't know the manufacturer or model of the drive.
The Lacie d2Quadra uses a 7200rpm SATA-II drive. Don't know the manufacturer or model of the drive.
However, you could compare a 2.5" Seagate Momentus 5400.6 (commonly used in laptops) ... against a 3.5" Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (common in external enclosures).
The 5400.6 has a peak read throughput of 83.2MB/sec (see Tom's Hardware).
The 7200.12 has a peak throughput of nearly 130 MB/sec (see Viperlair)
But hold on, the 5400.6 would be operating on a SATA bus, so it can probably achieve that 83.2MB/s. The external 7200.12 operating over FW800 would be limited to FW800's maximum throughput of about 100MB/sec.
Even so, it would appear the FW800 drive can potentially deliver 20% better throughput. But the performance of all drives declines as you fill up the drive, so take that into consideration.

  • Transfer speeds for internal drive/FireWire

I have a 2 yr old PowerMac G5 with a single 160 Gb hard drive, so I have an internal drive bay available that has a 150 MBps SATA controler. Does that mean I won't get the expected speed from one of the big Seagate or Maxtor internal SATA drives with 1.5 or 3 Gbps transfer capacity?
If that's true, would I get faster transfers using an external drive via FireWire 800?
    Thanks!

The maximum transfer speed of the 1.5 Gbps is actually about 1.2 Gbps (80% efficiency), or 150 MBps. So, in theory the 3 Gbps interface would be about twice as fast.
However, no single drive can achieve throughput at even the 1.2 Gbps level, so you're really not missing anything if you put in a drive with a 3 Gbps interface on it.
FW800 is 800 Mbps or 100 MBps at 100% efficiency. Real world transfer speeds would be in the 80MBps range at best. That's also a pretty tough speed to reach for a single drive. My 10,000 rpm 150GB Raptor drive can benchmark at or above that level, but many drives won't be able to.

  • Stock Quicksilver 867Mhz 2001: Max internal drives?

I am a little unclear on maximum drive expansion possibilities with this machine.
    a) 3 lower internal drive bays:
Documentation says "Support for up to two internal ATA drives". Currently I have 2 drives in the U-shaped drive carrier in "Drive position 3". I see an unused power connector. Can I put a 3rd HD in one of the empty lower bays "as is"? Not at all? Or with some additional hardware?
    b) 2 upper bays:
One is occupied by the original SuperDrive.
Documentation says I can put in an "optional Zip drive in the other upper bay". This bay's metal container looks smaller than the SuperDrive one. Is this only for Zip drives - or can a second DVD burner go in there? Or do I have to replace the original SuperDrive to have a faster CD/DVD drive (i.e. Lacie DVD+-RW Internal drive with LightScribe 16x)?
    TIA
    Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz 2001   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi TonyCMac,
    Firstly, welcome to the discussions.
You can put a third drive into the lower bay, but you will need to run it either off the bus for the optional Zip drive (which is quite slow), or via a PCI controller card.
You can put a second DVD burner into the free upper drive bay, but it will involve physically modifying the Mac because the bay in its present state is not big enough.
I have seen a thread (which I don't think is accessible anymore) which describes the bay enlargement process, and it is quite involved, and only for the adventurous handyman.
    Cheers!

  • Kernel Panic G4 D1.25 MDD - Maximum Hard Drive Capacity/Accessibility??

In solving my Kernel Panic from September 2, 2008 post I have been running "Panic Free" for a number of days.
I added a Firewire/eSATA/USB2 Nexstar external drive case w/WD Black 1 TB Drive) and I get a Kernel Panic instantly! It happens with Firewire and eSATA both.
I am running 4 x 500 GB IDE WD Caviar drives internally and what I want to know is there a "Maximum Hard Drive" amount that a G4 MDD can access at one time??
Is there a maximum of 2 TB of drive storage it can access or ??

No. It is likely the Nexstar's firmware is not compatible with the bus being used. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
The Firewire bus as long as its power draw is not over its specs, will handle up to 63 devices in a chain. The secret of course is for every Firewire device to have its own power source separate of the computer, and the chain not to be too long. That chain is defined more clearly here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire
USB has a theoretical maximum of 127 devices.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
I've found the most reliable Firewire hard drive cases come from http://www.macsales.com/

  • Locked out of additional internal drives... Help please

Any help would be more then welcomed as I did something stupid and need a bit of help to fix it please.
Had an issue today on my Mac Pro (2.8, Quad 5.1). All was running fine until I went to update a piece of 3rd party software (Fetch). After the download I went to drag new version into my apps folder and was told I didn't have permission to instal the app.
Now to be clear, I've had a bit of an issue with this before as I'm running 2 mac pros in different locations and drag and copy files and folders from here to there on a regular basis via FTP and external drives. I also have all 4 slots filled on both systems with various drives set up for a particular function along with a number of externals. I've set permissions on both systems and all drives to "read and write" for both my accounts to have full access and each time "apply to enclosed items" was selected.
But for some reason, from time to time, I have to authorise the file transfer. Haven't figured out the reason but it's not a huge deal so have left it.
Today was the first time I have had access denied for my home folder when working from same system. Not thinking and while on the phone to someone (this is where I did the stupid part), I opened the info on my boot (startup) drive and decided to add both of my user accounts and change permissions for each in addition to the system, admin and everyone that was already there. This was done while working from it directly and then set options to "apply to enclosed items". Yea, smart I know.
About 20 minutes passed and then it told me that it didn't like any of my system extensions. I was forced to do a restart and got the spinning wheel for about 30 minutes. Had to do a force quit and open in single user. Applejack wouldn't help at all, nothing. Had to then open cd drive through terminal just to get systems disk inside.
Restarted from systems disk and tried a simple disk utility repair. System restarted fine but I noticed that I was then locked out of all of my additional internal drives, iDisk included (padlock shown on all drive icons excluding my Boot/Startup drive). Tried opening info on the various drives with apple i option and "permissions denied" popped up each time.
I then took the step to restore from time machine. Set my restore selection to about 2 hours before I became an idiot. After it was finished I restarted the system hoping that would clear up my mistake but same thing, still locked out of all of my drives aside from boot/startup drive.
All user accounts that I have added to the boot drive are still showing, I have yet to try and remove them... Figured I would ask for help before I messed it up any further. Spoke to apple care and they have advised me to do what I have done so far.
Aside from an erase and instal, what steps should I take from this point? Will removing the added accounts clear up the issue?
Also, any idea as to why I was refused permissions to begin with...?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the book, just wanted to be as clear as possible.

Force iPad into Recovery Mode. Follow step 1 to step 3 very closely.

  • I had tried installing windows 8.1 pro with many different solutions like using Bootcamp or using gdisk part and upgrading the disk part from hybrid to EFI also tried Using Lenevo external Optical drive which doesnt worked my internal drive is damage

I Am fed up after getting error after errors on the installation of windows 8.1 in my late 2011 MBP 15" 750 GB HDD and OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 and i am trying to install windows 8 or 7 and the error doent go away also i tried various other methods like gdisk part to make next button appear and Afte next button appear i am getting the error after the check list is done
please someone help me out i am getting paranoid in this and i am going to be a threat to society because its making me insane.

    1. You cannot use the Lenovo external drive, because you already have a built-in SuperDrive. Get your internal drive fixed.
    2. Your Mac does not support EFI Boot, because it is a PreUEFI model based on How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support and the following list. If you force it with EFI boot, some of your hardware GPU/Audio will not work properly.

  • ITunes keeps storing files on C drive, even when the library/storage is on another internal drive. It should stop that.

Whatever I do to get iTunes to store it's data and settings on another internal drive, it KEEPS some sort of data/settings stored on the C drive.
A mkdir has been set up already to catch nasty "keep doing that" behaviour. Nevertheless, iTunes dumps stuff on the C drive /documents/mymusic.
Without to receive a technical story (read: a SIMPLE solution that does not feel like a hack), what's the solution.
Why does iTunes not simply ask WHERE to store the files rather than "assuming that the user is stupid and we think for him" attitude.
managing a database or DRM isn't THAT difficult.
Whatever files are within the directory is absolutely fine, as long as the user is allowed to choose that directory.

Did you mean mkdir or mklnk?
By default the iTunes library is stored at C:\Users\<User>\Music. If you play with Windows so that your entire profile is stored on a different drive then the library will be stored inside the profile. If you have used the option to change the location of the media folder to point to another path then you've only changed where the content is stored, not the database and supporting files. In addition if you use this option with an external drive or network share and that location isn't ready when iTunes starts then it will reset the path to the media folder to the default location inside the library folder.
Generally the solution when setting out is to move the entire library to the root of a different drive and then shift-start-iTunes to connect to the library in this new location. See HT1589: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
Since you didn't do that to start with, either start again, or see my post make a split library portable.
There is another chunk of data stored in the %appdata% section of your user profile. If you don't have any iOS devices you can ignore this, but if you have, and have an SSD system drive, then there is merit in relocating the ...\MobileSync\Backup folder to another drive with a mklnk junction/symbolic link as these backup folders can become quite large. Note that junctions/links should not be used to relocate sections of the main library as they will be unraveled if iTunes ever tries to write to the path.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.
