Maximum number of drives OSX will mount?

I have seen that Apple says that OSX can mount an "Unlimited" number of volumes. Does that mean then that I can hook up lets say 100 hard drives?
In a nutshell I am running into an issue having 24 drives show up in OSX SL. Only a maximum of 16 show. I am using an SAS Expander capable RAID card. The Raid GUI show all 24 devices but OSX does not. I am trying to figure out where the failure is happening...

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to get one question answered about the OS but since you asked here's more info. Each drive is just that one drive one partition... All I want to do at this point is have them show up so we can pull data off them as needed instead of using single bay hotswap devices as we have in the past.
I currently have a MacPro 1,1 with a Newer Technology MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-1e1i. OSX Snow Leopard OS. At this stage I am NOT trying to raid anything. I have a 24 bay SAS expander box with an Areca "controller" that feeds the SAS cable to the 24 bays. This card supports up to 128 devices through SAS expanders. When I fill the expander with 24 drives only 16 mount. I was thinking that OSX SL was maxing out at 16 volumes but Apples spec sheets says unlimited volumes in OSX (all versions). Also the internal bays do not seem to have an affect on the 16 number. I can have one or two internal bays filled with varying partitions (I have tried 1-4 meaning a total of 17-20 mounted volumes are showing in OSX.
The webGUI is showing ALL 24 drives in the SAS Expander. OSX is only mounting 16. All the bays work as I can remove drives from the upper bays then the lower bays will mount. It seems the card is working, the GUI is working, but something between that and the OS is limiting to 16 drives.
I am in contact with OWC but it is slow going as they are mixing my support question with another customer with totally different hardware...sigh.
Maybe there is a limit to the number of automatic "pass through" devices? Would PCIe 2 slots make a difference (I am not interested in speed just total drives mounted, although they are already seen by the GUI now)? I am not at the office till later in the week to try other things but thought I would post incase I am missing something simple.

If support, any limitation of logical drive under this RAID 6 group ?

I think this hot spare drive for this RAID 6 without any problem, how about it can recover OS mirror if rear drive failure

  • Maximum number of songs for muvo tx

I thought it would be impossible, but i managed to fit probably close to 2 hours of music on my muvo tx fm 52 mb. However, My muvo tx fm will only play a certain number of songs... it just won't see the rest. (for example, i have 7 folders full of music. my muvo tx fm only sees 6 of them.. even then in the sixth folder the muvo tx fm will only play one song.) Because of this i rule out a maximum number of folders. Will the muvo tx fm only play a certain number of songs or only play so many hours of music? I am currently converting about 20 mb of my songs to wma, as all my songs save one are in the mp3 format, and i am seeing if having maybe half of my songs in another format would help. I'll also try upgrading the firmware to see if this may fix it. But if someone has an answer now, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I too am experiencing the same problem. I have a gig tx fm and the player will only recognize 50 folders. Anything beyond that is lost; however I can play the files thru WMP0 when the player is plugged in via usb. Furthermore, 3 or 4 of the 50 folders that are visible on the player just get skipped; the files contained in them won't play. These files aren't corrupt or anything, they too will play thru WMP0. I have tried the firmware update .3.03 which lists--[*]Displays recorded tracks accurately when the player contains more than 50 folders.</LI>
as one of the included fixes. This problem is really bugging me as I have maybe a handful of songs by a variety of different artists and would prefer to keep them in separate folders by artist. If, in fact, it is true that the MuVo will only support 50 folders my whole plan for music organization is out the window. Any ideas out there since last post?

  • Maximum number of hits in Document overview (ME21N/ME22N/ME23N)

This number is defaulted to 5000. The help text states that it is the maximum number of hits that are to be displayed.
In my opinion this relates to the result.
In reality I notice that it relates to the first selection in the database.
    For example.
All purchase order for a given vendor (+9000 PO-items in the database, 110 without history).
Selection of PO's without goods receipts.
Using the the default value of 5000, the program gives the message "No suitable documents found"
After clearing the max. number of hits, the correct selection is made.
Suppose I would like to see the 10 oldest open PO's, this would not be possible.
    Is my assumption correct ?

    Hi,
I think there´s something not working correctly in your search, as the 5000 refers to the maximum number of hits that will be shown. I would recommend to open a ticket at SAP.

  • I am unable to connect database this error  ORA-00020: maximum number of

    ERROR:
ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (300) exceeded
how to resolve this problem.it is verry verry urgent.

    Hi
"Maximum number of processes exceeded" will be alerted when your database has received a request for connection from a process which is beyond the number of processes your database can allow for.
    Please check your database parameters
    show parameters processes
    Couple of options:
    a) If your database has been running for a while and if it's the first time you are recieving this error, please check why all of a sudden more and more processes have been created. You may want to investigate your application, users, etc
    b) If it's a valid request and if it's the case that you haven't really configured enough processes, you will have to increase the PROCESSES parameter in your init file and restart the database. It's not a dynamic parameter. Also, make sure you increase the sessions parameter as well along with the processes.
Before you do this, you will also have to check if your OS has been configured for increasing the number of processes. Think it's semmsl in Unix.

It's because in case 2 you hold the array build result from the previous loop iteration in a shift register...in case 8 you do not...
You say that if you set the maximum number to three it will produce an array with three elements, that is not correct, it will run when the iteration index is 0,1,2 and 3...resulting in 4 elements. If you want 3 you need to decrement the maximum number to 2. The same goes for case 8.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard - Maximum Number of Pairings

I've read the Apple Wireless Keyboard can be paired with more that one device.  Does anyone know what the maximum number of devices it will remember?  If I get it there are potentially four that I could pair with it.

I've two secondary computers and an iPad I may want to use it on infrequently. More specifically what I'm asking, can I pair the keyboard with all four devices?  I'd obviously only use it with one at a time. For example, if I need to use it briefly on a server can I disconnect from my MBP, enable BT on the server, use it, disable BT on the server, and reconnect with my MBP without having to walk through the pairing process each time.  I've read in other threads this is possible. I hoping to find out if there is a maximum number of devices the keyboard will remember its been paired with.  Make sense?

  • External Hard Drive won't mount - tried Disk Warrior, am backing up as a .dmg...will this work?

    Hi Guys,
Hopefully someone can help! Fairly desperate situation here...
I backed up around 700GB of data to an Iomega external hard drive (supplied by the client), using my Macbook Pro...all was fine when I unmounted the drive at the end of the backup.
The client took the drive away and called me to say he mounted the drive in Windows (on a PC), and he was able to work with the files for a time, but now the drive won't mount...
I collected the drive, hooked it up to my Mac Pro, but OSX tells me it can't mount the drive. It shows up in Disk Utility in the sidebar, but not on the desktop...
I tried repairing the disk using Disk Utility and with Disk Warrior, both tell me the disk cannot be repaired...
I am currently making a backup of the drive as a .dmg file, using a program called Disk Drill...it's slow as I expected, but I'm still not sure the .dmg will mount...because surely it's just making a copy of the data exactly, of which some part is not mounting (a mount directory or something???)
Is there any way you guys can think of me somehow taking the data and backing it up onto another disk?
Specialist recovery services seem to think there shouldn't be any problem recovering the data, and of couse, as a costly last resort, that's what I'll have to do, but does anyone know how they may go about doing it? It is something vastly complicated such as a command line thing?
Sorry about the length of this question...just hope someone can help!
    Thanks in advance...

You didn't say what format (filesystem type) the disk was.
However, I'd say your analysis is probably correct. Something has corrupted the disk. You can make a disk image copy to the .dmg which will preserve the data, such as it is, but I doubt extremely if it will fix any file system corruption.
Furthermore, if both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior have said the disk is unreadable I'm dubious that anything else will magically repair it and that recovery probably consists of snuffling through the disk block by block.
However if the filesystem is FAT (Windows) there may be other (Windows) utilities that can fix it.
You said you 'backed up the data'. Does that mean you still have the original data on your MBP? Are you trying to recover the client's changes?

  • OSX will not run on my new Seagate 7200 rpm 160GB drive

I tried 'restoring' to this drive as an external drive but this Macbook will not start up from it. I have been all over the internet and seen where people are using this drive as a replacement internal drive. I partitioned it as one partition and then as two 80s. Each time I try to install OSX on it from my restore disk it shows up as a drive, but with a red exclamation and OSX says it cant go on that disk. I can write to the disk and it mounts as both internal and external, but I can not figure out how anyone is getting OSX to run from it. The drive is a Seagate ST916082 3ASG. It is a SATA, and both it and my previous Toshiba drive will mount in the external case that I got for it. I think it is an OSX weirdness.

    Hi dancarmack;
Changing to the Guid Partition Table is an option when reformatting.
Reformat will wipe out all data on the disk.
You don't have to worry about OS 9 drivers. Your MacBook does not run OS 9.

  • Maximum number of mountable drives

Is there a maximum number of mountable drives in Leopard? I tried to partition an external drives into 3 while having two other USB drives already mounted and it triggered an error. It seems like there might be a limit of 4 mountable drives. Is this correct?

No. I currently have 6 volumes mounted on my iMac (one being the boot drive, so using your math, I have 5 additional drives mounted). And I've had more then this number of drives mounted in the past.
If you got an error, then there was some other problem. Have you looked at the console logs (Applications -> Utilities -> Console). If you can provide the exact error, maybe someone can suggest a solution.

  • None of my Lacie external drives will mount!

They were showing up yesterday, but today none of them will mount, whether it's connected thorugh USB, firewire, etc.
I've restarted, The drive powers on when connected, but it just doesn't show up on the desktop...

May I take this thread a little farther with my perplexing question? I seem unable to start a new thread. OK... Here goes.
Just like "ufoclub", My FireWire externals just failed to mount on start-up when I returned from vacation. I assumed there was a problem with the drives. When I opened disc utility, one of the two SLOWLY appeared in disc utility, but it was assigned a random name. When I tried to mount it, it simply disappeared.
Next I tried unplugging the other drive, and re-starting... Same deal. Next I plugged both back in and re-started... No dice. Then I repaired disc permissions on my system drive, and tried again. Still not working.
At this point, I concluded that both drives must have taken a power hit, even though everything in my studio is on a UPS. I brought both drives into the office, plugged them into my G4, AND they both mounted immediately. I changed out both FireWire cables on the Mac Pro, and tried it all again. Still nothing. Back to the G4 with them... They show up on the G4 just fine, but now the Pro won't even see them over the network. Repaired disc permissions again. Still nothing.
Could 2 of the FireWire ports on my Pro be toast? I have Digi 002 plugged into one of the ports, and it works just fine.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately once all the 3 iCloud accounts have been created on your mobile device, you cannot create any more regardless of what you do. You will need to re-use one of the accounts that you have already created or create your new account on another device or computer.
You should however be able to add existing accounts to your device, are you sure you aren't trying to create on rather than simply use an existing one.
