Maximum number of photos in iPhoto?

I have almost 20,000 photos in my iPhoto, and I have noticed that when I open iPhoto, and during some processes, I get the beach ball for a bit. I have been thinking about splitting my library into two or more libraries. I have rebuilt everything many times, that does not help. Anyone out there have some thoughts on this?
thanks, Bruce

In addition to Terence's excellent suggestions look at the tip at the end of my signature. It may help prevent severe organizational loss due to damage/corruption of the iPhoto database file, Library6.iPhoto.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Maximum number of  photos in iPhoto 5

When I had my older G4 and older version of iPhoto (3.0 I think), scrolling and other functions would be extremely slow if my library go too big. So I split my iPhoto library into several smaller ones using iPhoto Library Manager. Now that I have a fast new iMac G5 and the latest version of iPhoto, I would like to merge libraries into one for convenience. With this hardware and OS 10.4.3, is there a suggested maximum number of photos not to exceed in the main iPhoto library for reasons of performance? I am not really a power user, but don't want scrolling and dragging to take forever like they did on the G4...

    Hi rsm,
How many images are you talking about here?
How many images in each Library do you have?
What is the make of your camera?
Steve Jobs told us 20,000, but we have really got mixed results on that number.
Depending on your camera, it can make huge Makernote files that will considerably slow down iPhoto to the point of uselessness.
You can do a search within iPhoto 5 here in the forum for "Makernote" so you will understand the problem.

What is the maximum number of photos in an iphoto book?

Depends on the theme and the page layouts you - choose - a book has a maximum of 100 pages and as far as I have seen the most photos on a page is 16 - so 1600 would be the Max if you used 100 pages of 16 photos each
for an overview of page layouts for iPhoto '09 (all are still valid in iPhoto '11 - with some more added) see Liz Castro's web site - http://www.iphotobookthemes.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.HomePage

    No
There is a maximum numb of pages in a book (100 pages) and the larges page I am aware of holds 16 photos so the maximun number of photos you could have in a book would be 1600

  • Maximum number of photos allowed in an i photo6 slide show???

What is the maximum number of photos allowed in an i photo 6 slide show???
In a previous version, it was 99, I believe. I can't find the answer in any documentation.

There never was a limit to the number of slides in an iPhoto slideshow. That 99 limit was for slideshow created in iDVD from imported stills. iDVD can not have more than 99 slides in any one slideshow that's created entirely in iDVD but at 99 the chapter number of the next slide (each slide is considered a chapter) reverts back to 1. It's a DVD standard issue, not an iDVD thing.

  • Maximum number of photos that can be imported into an iPhoto library?

    1. Does iPhoto have a maximum number of files or photos that it can handle in a single library?
I have a lot of photos (20GB) that have not yet been imported into an iPhoto Library. I am going to set up a new library with the iPhoto Library Manager (iPLM), but am wondering if there is a maximum number of files that can be handled in a single library?
    2. Also, I don't think I want to import these, since that would create an iPhoto library as large as the source files. Are there any problems if I set up the preferences so that this library will not have the graphics imported into it?
    3. With iPLM, can you have different sets of preferences for each library?
Thank you for any advice or suggestions.

    1. Does iPhoto have a maximum number of files or photos that it can handle in a single library?
Apple advertises that iPhoto will handle 250,000 photos - I doubt that anyone has come close to that (or will)
I have 19,278 in 237 events - 22 GB - on a G5 iMac and it is snappy with no issues

If you want those should be fine in one library

It is a choice - if you do NOT import them then you will be responsible for all future management - deleting, etc. Moving to a different location or computer is much more difficult if you reference your photos instead of importing them.
Many people import them, burn the original source photos to CD or DVD and delete them from their disk letting iPhoto manage them

I'm not sure but I do not think so

  • Why is the number of photos in the Photos app different than the number of photos in iPhoto on the Mac?

I have an iPhone 4S and a MacBook Air. On the MacBook Air, in iPhoto, the number of photos is 3,563 (this is the number that appears next to the word Photos under library in the left hand pane). When I synch my phone with iTunes, I've selected Synch Photos from iPhoto and the number that follows that line is 3,546 photos. I have checked All Photos, albums, Events, and Faces.
On my iPhone under Settings, General, About, there are 4,293 Photos shown (the Camera Roll is empty).
I don't understand why these three numbers are not identical. Anyone know?

What version of iPhoto and system are you running? What mode are you in, i.e. Events, Photos?
If it's the Photos mode the number at the bottom will represent the number of photos displayed in that mode or the number of photos selected in that mode. The number will match the number next to the photos mode only when there are no photos in that mode that are selected.
If you click on the Events icon and then back on the photos icon the numbers should match.

  • What is maximum number of photos that will display in a slideshow

  • Maximum number of photos in dvd slideshow - what's my best option?

I have made just one slideshow dvd - it contained 3 different slideshows, one of 90 photos, one of 120, one of 146 photos.
Now I am doing a slideshow for the celebration of life for a friend's late husband.
My problem: she has given me about 500 (maybe more) photos. I've scanned over 300 and have lots to go.
I want this to be just one slideshow so that my friend can have it playing (and looping) throughout the gathering).
Before I proceed with this huge project: HOW BIG is too big for a slideshow? I was going to do one iPhoto slideshow and then export it to iDVD. But I'm starting to wonder if this is unmanageable.
PLEASE help. What is my best course of action? How many photos can I cram into a slideshow? (I'll be adding music as I did on my previous project.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you create the slideshow in iPHoto there is no limit on the number of photos. However, there is a bug with the latest iPhoto regarding adding music to slideshows and exporting as Quicktime or directly to iDVD. There are a couple of workarounds for that.
1 - create the slideshow w/o music, add it to an iDVD slideshow (like you would a photo)
and add the music in iDVD.
2 - create the slideshow w/o music, export as a QT movie, 640 x 480. Join the music together into one new audio file with Garageband or the free Audacity, and join the two with Quicktime Pro.
You can have more than 99 photos in an iDVD slideshow but will get a pause/hesitation at slide 100, 198, and every 99 slides thereafter. That's because iDVD has to set the chapter number of slide 100 back to 1 (part of DVD international standards). If burned to good media at 4x or less you can minimize the effect although it depends a lot on the DVD player. Some handle it better than others.
FWIW I've found that I get better screen image quality when creating the slideshow in iDVD. The downside is that there's no Ken Burns effect and you can only have one transition type for the slideshow.
If you have QT Pro and want to go the join route post back and I'll describe the workflow.

  • Maximum number of photos in a book?

Well, I've got this 100-page book all set to go, but the pdf file shows the last 25-30 pages as being blank. I've shuffled pages around and gotten different numbers of blank pages, so I'm beginning to think that there may be a limit to the number of photos that can be stuffed into a book. I've got 567 photos in the book layout right now. Is that too many? Has anyone had any experience with books having this many photos before?

    Hi!
Thanks for the quick reply. The book is double-sided (100 pages), Picture Book theme. And after much playing around, my conclusion is the same as yours -- there seems to be no limit to the number of photos, only to the number of pages. I've actually increased the number of photos in my book to 587, and they all appear in the generated pdf file.
The initial problem -- blank pages -- seems to have been related to the resolution settings in the iPhoto prefs file. Reducing those numbers resulted in all pages being properly printed. Here's the text of my reply to a reply to another question I posted concerning those blank pages...
I'm using the Picture Book theme. And after much tinkering, I think I've found the problem -- and the solution.
Remembering posts from some time ago discussing ways to improve the quality of the printed photos -- including tweaking the iphoto prefs file -- I used the Property List Editor app to check my book settings (BookTargetDPI-BookTargetMediumIMageDPI-BookTargetSmallImageDPI). The three items were all set to 300. I reduced them to 250 each, then tried 'ordering' the book again. Lo, and behold, there were now 20 fewer blank pages. So I set about playing with different combinations of settings, trying to find the optimum resolutions that would print all 100 pages. I've ended up with something like 250-220-220.
Now I have no idea what these settings actually control, or what the optimum settings would be for this or any other book project, but clearly, they affect how many pages are accepted for printing. While the 300-300-300 settings worked for my last book, that book was only 20 pages. For this current book, those numbers are too high.
I looked at many of the other posts in this forum and wonder if those having trouble with blank pages haven't also played with these settings. I tried moving the iPhoto prefs file out of the Library/Preferences folder in order to force iPhoto to create a new file with default settings, and discovered that 150-150-300 seem to be Apple's preferred settings. But the very first book I ordered from Apple, which used those settings, was a bit disappointing in terms of resolution. Hence my boosting of these numbers for the second book.
The problem of blank pages could also have something to do with file size. At the higher resolutions, the generated pdf file tipped the scales at a beefy 193 MB, but at the lower resolutions, the pdf file is a relatively svelte 133 MB. There might be some limitation built into iPhoto to prevent people from trying to send1 GB pdf files to Apple's printers.
In my case at least, the problem is NOT related to the number of photos I'm using. After playing with the numbers, I actually went back and added a dozen more photos, pushing the total to 587 across 100 pages. And with the new resolutions, all photos on all pages print fine.
I wish I knew what all of this meant and how it could be used to predict iPhoto's book creation behavior, but at least I'll be able to print this book now.
Thanks for your quick reply! Hope my experiences help someone else with similar problems.

  • Number of Photos on iPhoto

What is the max amount of photos that iPhoto can hold? I have about 5,000 and wonder if I should burn them to a disk and start over again. Any thoughts?
    Connie

I have 2gb RAM on my MacBook and an iPhoto library with nearly 50,000 images. It runs ok as long as I don't really have any other big applications running at the same time. If I run it with iTunes open (my iTunes library is pretty large) then it certainly becomes less responsive, though still perfectly manageable.
The big slow down for me comes from having a lot of distinct Places. When I click on the Places button to go to the world map view it can take around a minute to draw - I have 1600 places created.

  • Maximum number of photos in Photoshop Elements 8

I am using Photoshop Elements 6 and am considering upgrade to 8. I am using Windows XP. I have about 50,000 photos on 6 and wonder what experienced users feel is the limit on 8 (or on Elements in general). Am I better off dividing into multiple catalogs? Switching to another program (Lightroom? Photoshop CS4?).
BTW, my photos are divided into about 3 groups, with some overlap - family, travel, and artwork (consisting of both my finished artwork and photos I use to produce my artwork, which is photo-based mixed media).
On my other computer (iMac), I am using Lightroom and Photoshop CS4, and have about 100,000 photos. Because so many photos slows down the program, I am dividing into a number of Catalogs/Libraries.
    Thanks for your opinions.

Thanks. I don't normally do "automatic" upgrades. There usually isn't a
whole lot of difference in a new version. I am doing more of my work in Raw
these day, and I understand that Elements 8 also has more raw support,
although I didn't notice it in the comparison chart.
My wife is an artist, but isn't very computer literate, so a lot of my work
is maintaining her files. She takes lots of photographs, and then years
later may use them in her work, so it is preferable to keep everything in
    one catalog, as you suggest.

  • Number of photos in iphoto 6 Slideshow

Hi. I've owned my Mac for 4 days (never owned a computer in my life before this). I'm trying to create a slideshow to post on the internet for my family to view as most of them live so far away.
I moved all the pictures i wanted in the slideshow into the Slideshow folder, and i was editing them (rotating them) until i got to picture #16. iPhoto won't let me even VIEW the pictures after #15. I previewed the actual slideshow itself and sure enough, it stopped after 15 despite the fact there are 37 pictures total in the slideshow folder.
I've looked and looked for a place to edit the length of a slideshow but can't seem to find it. Can anybody help me? I find it hard to believe it's impossible to create a slideshow longer than #15 pictures.
I can't sum up my life in 15 pictures. It was hard enough to trim it down to the 37 i choose.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    shambrajennings:
Where did the photos come from? I see you're at 10.4.7. iPhoto had issues with image files that had no color profile. However, the 10.4.9 update and Quicktime 7.15 updates fixed that. I suggest you download the 10.4.9 COMBO updater and Quicktime 7.1.5 updater from here, run them and the repair disk permissions with Disk Utility.
If you still have problems, download the "Embed sRGB Profile" from Toad's Cellar, unzip it and place on the Desktop. The locate the Originals folder in your iPhoto Library folder (in your Pictures folder) and drop it onto the application. That will embed the sRGB profile into every file. Then give the slideshow another try.

  • Maximum number of photos in library?

I have more than 16500 photos in my iPhoto 5 library. When I try to add more photos, the program crashes after the import, apparently while "digesting" the photos. I tried rebuilding the library, no help. The only way I found to cure the problem seems to be to split the library into two parts. I'm thinking there might be a problem when a library tries to contain more than 16,384 photos, which is a power of two. Has any one else seen this problem, or do you have more than 16K photos in a single library?

Also, I loop hole I have found around this was to minimize the iPhoto window immediately after starting the import and leaving it minimized until I think it's done.... you probably know how long it takes roughly to give it just enough time to finish importing before you unhide the window again. When I do this iPhoto doesn't crash during an import. But still quit after the import is done before you do anything else to save the import successfully. iPhoto has been such a headache lately. I can't edit a photo without it getting permanently stuck on "saving changes" and now it's crashing for more actions... my library is roughly 28,000 pics and it can be fast sometimes and ...s l o w o t h e r s... frustrating, let me know if you find a more practical solution.
