Maximum Number of RAM Slots - Lenovo G580

Hi,
So the Lenovo G580 solution center claims the MAX support is 32gb, 4 slots 1 in use. Leaving 3 available. So I bought 8gb 2*4gB from Crucial. Should arrive today or tomorrow.
Anyway, Crucial scanner - I didn't notice before - claims that my laptop can only support 16gb.. and the available slots are 16gB.
Not sure if this is a joke or something as I could have just bought a single 8gb RAM stick.  I checked the G580 manual and it appears to only have 2 slots. So is Lenovo's Solution center software buggy (or was it made for a desktop - that could explain it)?
Or can anyone confirm that my laptop does indeed support 32gb. I would like to think so, it'd be rather wrong if a third party software is more correct than Lenovo's software.   Specs

Thanks.

You can easily open the bottom and look... to verify only two slots.Download little Speccy program www.speccy.com   simple .. it will show you whats there. Processor says 16gb  http://ark.intel.com/products/53442/Intel-Core-i3-2370M-Processor-3M-Cache-2_40-GHz crucial will have the right info .. always.. in my experiences.you cant install 8gb and 4gb,  you need to match chip sizes on the memory cards that will pair up to effectively double the chip size via  the bus/wires and give you dual channel memory then.    If you came with only one memory module installed youre running single channel now.  half the potential bandwidth of like 10gb/s   where dual will be 20gb/s. Crucial should let you return your order for exchange.. and add some money for a pair of 8gb.

  • Maximum Number of NICs and Ethernet Ports

    Dear Friend,
I am looking into constructing a Sun system with the maximum number of ethernet ports.
Q1: is there a Solaris 8 specific maximum number of ethernet ports that it can support?
Q2: i know you can get quad ethernet cards, but anyone know of cards that offer more than four per card?
Q3: assuming the cards will be PCI, which sun machine offers the maximum number of PCI slots?
    I really appreciate your help
    many thanks

    Hi Rukbat
    Thanks for your response.
    > A1: There isn't any limitation within the OS.
    > Your limitations are from the hardware of the system.
Indeed, I did not think there would be a limit from within the OS. I have had a research sun machine with some 12+1 ports, an ol'Ultra-10 actually. i got upto that many ports by using three qfe's and there is one port already on the system (hme0)
    >If you have too much packet traffic for your cpu modules

    > system panics.
one accepts that there would be delays - naturally. but I am not sure why there would be data corruption or even panics. that to me sounds very very serious.
the ultra-10 seems to be working ok; I never saw it crash once. But I must confess that the traffic load is not THAT high.
    > Long time ago, there was a general rule-of-thumb

erm erm I would say that is pretty low, but I would not call myself an expert on this really.
    > I'm sure there is a similar suggestion for QGE's and fast
    > cpu's in this 21st century.
i would like to think that one modern cpu should be ok for about 10 ports with reasonable traffic load. I am judging this by the old Ultra-10 I have built, beside which I have no supporting evidence.
    > A2: There are no Sun-qualified adapters with more than

    i am surprised at that.

    yes I agree
    > Besides, there is only so much room on the card's
    > backplate if you want to actually plug in the wires.
I take your point about the physical space on the backplate. I have found one company that is knocking up 6-port devices, and from what I gather, that is as much as one is gonna get.
    > A3: A Sunfire E6900 would be able to be configured for 32

    > domain, and an E25k can give you up to 72 PCI slots in
    > a single domain.
that is a good hint actually. that is the high-end range I think.
in any case, I think the sort of machine I would be looking for is in sun's mid-range of servers. something like a V440, which has 6 PCI slots for use. I could potentially have (6x6)+2=38 ports. It is also capable of taking four 1.593-GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors, and my gut feeling is that the four processors will be ok to support 38 ports.
I am still open to take advice of course. Indeed I would very much appreaciate further thoughts!

  • Lenovo G580 2nd Ram slot broken

My laptop was preinstalled with 4gb and recently I brought a new 4gb ram to add to the computer but as I inserted it in the 2nd slot it still detects it as 4gb. I tried numerous times and also tried swapping them to find out and I know it isn't the new ram because Windows detects it on 1st slot but it's only when I put a ram in the 2nd slot that it has errors. My Windows is 64 bit so it should be able to use more memory. I don't know whether it could be the snap-in or something is wrong with the memory in the hardware. Could I get this fixed from a store or some remedy to get it to read?

Nevermind everyone. I feel so stupid right now. Turns out after hours of messing around with the ram slot I forgot that I needed to actually push down the ram into the slot rather than just inserting into place. I solved the problem myself so it turns out it wasn't a bad slot after all.

  • My New Lenovo G580 - Blue Screen Error

    Hi,
    I have bought a new lenovo G580 (Intel B950/2GB/500GB) with DOS (on Friday - 21 Spetember, 2012).
I have installed another 2GB RAM in the extra slot. So, I have a total of 2+2 GB RAM now.
I installed Windows7 in it. It has worked fine for 1 day, but when I installed the G580 bluetooth, wifi drivers, it started crashing with bluescreen creating a dump file. Now I am even unable to start the system. I have formatted the system twice by could not trace it out. I have seen other forums and found out that it is due to some dropbox issues etc., But I have not installed even 1 software. As soon as I installed windows7, I started with the drivers (Drivers DVD came along with my laptop)
    Please help me.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Go to Solution.

    Hi Sudheer,
If you are able to open windows go to
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools and select the last option to "generate system health report" .If something is wrong with the system or a service windows will flag it for you. If you are not able to open windows and try opening it in the safe mode(press F8 during startup) check for the same.
Also try opening windows in a clean state
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
    Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.
If this does not cause a BSOD then I would suspect there is a driver conflict/compatiablity in your system. Can you provide the exact error in the BSOD which you see?
    Hope this helps
    Cheers and regards,

  • Lenovo G580 - WIndows 8 - Resizing OS partition & problems with system recovery

    Hello Everybody,
Just bought a Lenovo G580 notebook with pre installed Windows 8 (500gb harddisk, 4 gb RAM, Intel B960).I have been using Easeus partition manager with Windows 7 & its been working very well.So I wanted to partition my new HDD with it.Upon creating the a new 100gb partition (most importantly from OS partition that was about 428 gb) a very strange thing happened. The Refresh/Reset functions of WIndows 8 stopped working saying required recovery files are missing, also Lenovo One Key recovery program does not work with the message that required service partition is currently unavailable. At the same time, apparently  partition called Windows recovery  (1000 mb, hidden) still exists. One more peculiar thing I noticed & that is there is a new 1mb unallocated partition before the Windows recovery partition. While partitioning I did not receive any message about deleting of any data. One last piece of information (not sure if relevant) is before doing partition I had created a system image that I am unable to restore, Windows 8 repair function recognises the image bit is unable to restore it.
Any ideas how to restore the System Recovery functions or how to restore the system image.
    Thanks
    Petr

I have an intel macbook pro (core duo with 2GB ram) and a copy of purchased adobe creative suite 2. Other applications in the suite like photoshop, acrobat, etc can run on my mac without any problem. • Where do i find the second ram slot on a t43 thinkpad

i believe ram might be my issue causing my t43 to freeze moving the mouse pointer with the track pointer helps get things working i bought a new 1gb ram and installed it in the ram port since then i have been able to run sluggish applications more smoothly but after a while of using these applications up to an hour the t43 freezes using the track point put some life back in to the machine (enough to close the application) when i dont have anything running except the internet it runs fine i believe the t43 has some sort of second ram slot since in the system it now shows as 1.5gb of ram and not 1gb
should the t43 have a second ram slot how easy is it to get at i don't want to accidentally  break something

    Welcome to the forum!
The second RAM slot is under the keyboard. Check the HMM for removal instructions:

  • RAM slot failure on a Equium P300-16T

Hi, Ive got a RAM slot failure on a Equium p300-16T. I have tested both RAM modules and there in perfect working order. RAM slot 1 works and laptop boots successfully but as soon as RAM module inputed into RAM slot 2 no boot.
My frustration comes from when i began a warranty repair on Friday night through the website and it refused to accept it stating that the server had timed out. Unfortunately this timing out seem to happen every time i went to finish the warranty claim. And to my dismay my Serial number is no longer available on the website due to the warranty running out today (2nd of August).
Is there anything i can do?
    Kind Regards
    Ian Watt

What size RAM are you installing?
The system is capable of 2GB Max in total, so if you are installing RAM above 2GB, booting will/may fail.
You may be able to install a 2GB Module in Slot A, but it will probably be unstable and cause intermittent BSOD's. Or not boot at all. (not recommended)
I believe your laptop has the Santa Rosa chipset, which requires RAM in at least Slot A.
If you install RAM in Slot B only, it wont boot.
So basically to get the most out of the system, you should have a 1GB Module in each slot, which is how it comes from the factory if the specs found in google are correct.

In the specifications of M4000 i see that for these servers we can upgrade he Ram upto 128 GB.
Please guide, any help offerred is appreciated.

    A Key document is:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19855-01/819-2210-14/819-2210-14.pdf
The m4000 can have 4 memory modules.
Each memory module can contain up to 8 dimms. (Two groups on same size (A and B) of 4 dimms). Group A dimms may must not be smaller than Group B dimms. (within a memory module).
The server can contain 4 memory modules of 8 dimms ... 128GB is attained by 32 4GB dimms. ( 8GB dimms used to be purchasable but are now discontinued ).
Depending on what you purchased to achieve 32GB on your server then following options are available:
    - If you purchased 2 memory modules of 8GB each simply put these in two unused module slots and goto 32GB
    - If you purchased 2 memory modules of 16GB each simply put these in two unused module slots and goto 48GB
    - If you purchased 4 memory modules of 8GB each using 8 x 1GB dimms then move your existing simms into the group A slots of the new memory modules, goto 40GB and sell the spare dimmms on ebay or put them certain DELL's (then watch the thing crash due to a static dimm destruction issue and possilbe issues as it isn't supported.)
    - If you purchased 8 2GB dimms stick them in your existing memory modules
    - If you purchased 16 2GB Dimms ... and don have spare empty memory modules sell spares on ebay.
.... There may be further options ....
In general the person you are purchasing from should be giving good advice ... better than mine above.
... My cynical opinion is a lot of partners (and perhaps even Oracle itself) supplying the purchase may be on commission and have no interest and little care in minimising your cost .... having seen the performance of some oracle 'partners' in the uk I can see why some customers might want to move away from oracle hardware.
Please be aware certain games with switching things about could affect your warrantee ... ( its highly embarrassing when a failing disk in a dilbert has the wrong part number or even worse an incorrect backplate affecting the airflow ... ) ... and what you are really paying for is for an engineer to come and sort your server out if there is a hardware issue. So take some of the suggestions above with a pinch of salt.
Please be aware while have I tried to be accurate above I may have made a mistake. ... .... (in fact knowing me I probably have).
Edited by: bigdelboy on 26-Jan-2013 03:51 (NB: adding memory to servers is often a difficult balancing act and may not be cost effective .... and may make smaller dimms redundant in an upgrade in order to maintain supportable/workable configurations). A new T4/T5 may be more cost effective}. Buying fully populated at the beginning is also often more cost effective .... though the largest dimms to achieve highest capacity may be cost prohibitive.

  • Help with ram slots on MSI P7N SLI PLATINUM

    2x2 Gb DDR2 800MHz Kingston
500 watt (absolute) power supply (taken form an old HP workstation)
    windows 7 X64
    Everything's on stock setting
Its been almost 1 & 1/2 years since i bought this rig, and from first month itself i have been having problem with the ram. The problem is not with the sticks, its with the ram slots. There are different things that happen. Sometimes when i boot my system:
    1) either, it wont start, i.e. no boot screen.
    2) It will load upto windows startup screen, crash and restart in an infinite loop.
    3) It will load windows, then crash after sometime.
    4) If i run any memory diagnostic, it will give errors.
At these times, i take out my 2 ram sticks, tinker with them, place them in different combination of ram slots, try push them in, in a certain way, keep trying until it yields and it boots up again ( generally a process of 1/2 an hr to an hr). After this my system will work fine ( no errors on any memory diagnostic) and boot properly for a week or 2, maybe even a month, but then again the same problem happens. I know for sure that there is no problem with my dimms (have checked them in other system and they work fine), its something to do with ram slots, or memory bus-controller structure.
Recently the problem happened again, though my tinkering didn't help. My system only boots up if i place any of the ram sticks in the 3rd slot (the 1st orange one). It wont work for any other slot and neither will it work if i place both of the sticks together. I have tried resetting my bios as well cmos settings, but it has not helped. My mb is still in warranty, but if i give it for repair, it will be gone for a good month or so, which doesn't go well with me. If someone has any suggestions, or a way out, it will be highly appreciated. Please help!

yes the psu has a single +12v rail with 21A rating, but somehow i don't feel the problem is because of it. When my system successfully boots, it works properly. I can play or work on high performance softwares for any number of hours without fail, which ought not to happen if the psu is bad.
Hmm, you are ignoring the possibility that your PSU is "flaky" (that's a technical term)!!!! You've never had any gizmo where "sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work"?
If you don't want to buy a new PSU then at least beg-borrow-steal another one and see if your symptoms change.

  • Error related to EFI system..unable to install windows 7 64-bit on lenovo g580..

    Hi,
I have Lenovo g580 which had DOS preinstalled in it {i5, 500GB, 4GB} and initially I had installed Win 7 32-bit on it. At that time, it gave some problem while rebooting 1st time, but i ran repair windows option and everything ran smoothly.
But the problem came when I tried to install windows 7 64-bit on the laptop using a DVD, no matter which drive I select, it does not allow me to go ahead. When I checked the details, I got the error message which is attached here.

There is no disk controller option in BIOS, nor is there anything related tto UEFI systems.
i did r&d on uefi systems, but i want to be sure of everything before i go ahead with anything.
     Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for no help guyz!
but i found a way..so for anybody else out there..here is the solution..
When installing at the partition screen hit Shift+F10.
At the prompt type diskpart and press Enter.
Type list disk (Not the number of the disk you want to use)
Type select disk X where is X is the number of the disk you want to use.
Type clean. This will erase all the data on your system.
    Type convert gpt
Now reboot the system with the DVD/USB, and you will see only Unallocated Space. Use that to install the new windows.
Be warned though, this will clear out the partition table on the drive; make sure you have a backup before attempting this if you have important data

  • Which is the maximum number of simultaneous IP sessions on 7600 with/out SAMI?

Please I need help from someone who has ever wondered and get to know the maximum number of simultaneous IP sessions on 7600.
On the documentation, this is the applicable information that we find regarding the number of sessions:
    http://www9.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/isg/configuration/guide/isg_acess_sub_sessns_ps6922_TSD_Products_Configuration_Guide_Chapter.html
Beginning in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SRE, the Cisco 7600 router supports IP subscriber sessions only on the SIP400 and ES+ line cards
The Cisco 7600 router enforces limits on the number of IP subscriber sessions per line card and router chassis. If the number of active sessions exceeds the following limits, an error message displays:
    - Cisco 7600 chassis—32,000 subscriber sessions (supported in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SRE1 and later releases)
    - ES+ line card—4000 subscriber sessions per port group; 16,000 sessions per line card (supported in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SRE and later releases)
    - SIP400 line card—8000 subscriber sessions (supported in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SRD4 and later releases)
Let us suppose that we use the SIP400 line card, since ES+ is far from our networking requirements.
    Please confirm/answer the following:
No special license is required to use ISG with SIP400.
Is the 8000 session limitation per SIP400 module or per SPA attached to it?
I read in the documentation, that the SAMI card enhances the maximum number of ISG sessions:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/isg/configuration/guide/isg_sup_sami_blade.html
The ISG Support for SAMI Blade feature combines the subscriber management features and functions of the Cisco Intelligent Services Gateway (ISG) with the processing power of the Cisco Service Application Module for IP (SAMI). The Cisco SAMI blade has six PowerPC (PPC) processors and occupies just one slot in the Cisco 7600 series router. This means that you can support many ISG features for up to 600,000 subscribers on a single router.
We then assume that the SAMI blade overcomes the limitations noted above: 32,000 session/chassis and 8,000 sessions/SIP400. Correct?
No extra license is required to use ISG with SAMI.

How I can load a license in a home agent (modulo SAMI), which is installed in a 7606-S router?.

  • E66 - "Maximum number of connections in use. Clos...

When I try to use the web or Google Maps I get an error message: "Maximum number of connections in use. Close an active connection first."
I suspect it's related to having a connection going for automatic email but I did not have this message on my N78 or my 6120 classic. I suspect it's NOT related to my service provider since it works fine with the other phones.
The window that lets you close the active connections only has one to close. It crashes Google Maps pretty hard too.
I've got the e66-2 (NAM version) I don't know if that makes a difference. Any firmware upgrade for the e66-2 yet?
    Any workaround ideas?

Try quitting the active connection and starting a connection on Google Maps first, the next time. This is not abnormal. And are you sure that you used the same provider and were able to do the same thing without closing connections in the other devices ? In my experience, this is network related.

  • Maximum Number of Simultaneous Accounts?

Is there a maximum number of accounts I can have running at the same time? I have fast user switching turned on and would like to run up to 10 accounts at a time.

    Daniel,
I don't see why not, but then I also don't see what possible reason you would have for doing this. Keep in mind that your MBP may become very sluggish with this many accounts active at one time, especially if you do not have your RAM maxed out.
