I know the latest airport extreme (2/1/2015) states that it can handle up to 50 wifi clients.
I'm curious if anyone knows if airplay is adversely affected before 50?

Airplay will be badly affected if you have any number of clients even 2 or 3 actively using the network over wireless assuming your network links for airplay are not all ethernet.. it is not the number of clients but the usage of the wireless that is problematic.. As soon as you get to 70% say usage wireless will become less and less efficient and unable to handle so many clients.
Wireless does not share well.. particularly streaming.. let me strongly recommend if you plan to stream a lot use ethernet.. and keep the wireless to a min.

How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport
I want to use dns servers other then the one that airport extreme is using. For example I got the 172.16.1.1 (the default gateway - airport extreme), but I want to use the office dns servers, that are in a 10.x.x.x range.
Is there a possibility?

The Airport Extreme uses the DNS servers assigned by the network that it connects to. Is you Airport Extreme on the 10.x.x.x network? if it is then you are already using the 10.x.x.x DNS servers. Check your Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility and you will see in the Internet tab, the DNS servers used. The devices connecting to the Airport Extreme are assigned a DNS address of the Airport Extremes IP, In your case 172.16.1.1 but all DNS searches and resolution are done with the DNS servers you see in the Airport Extreme.
If you want to use some other DNS then you can override in the Airport Extreme which will be used by all devices connecting too the Airport Extreme, Or you can edit the DNS address in each devices wireless settings.

Maximum number of wireless clients on a WRT54GS

I have an WRT54GS Wireless Router and want to know what is the maximum number of wireless clients that can associate to it.

Guys...by theory each access point can only accomodate 32 wireless clients. And of course it will still be on degraded performance as it can only give out ample throughput for few.

Maximum number of DHCP clients with Airport Extreme (802.11n)?

I see in the documentation that the number of wireless clients that the new Airport Extreme can handle is 50, but it doesn't indicate that it can handle more than 50 via the LAN ports.
Has anyone connected one of these units to a network with more than 50 simultaneously connected (wired) computers?

I realize that it's a home unit, and it will be when I'm done. I need to set something up as a temporary solution for a LAN party at our college, but I need to keep it separate from our regular network.
I've got all the switches I need (we usually get by with 3 unmanaged Cisco 24-port switches). I'm just looking for a solution that is simpler than reconfiguring a Linux machine as a DHCP server and gateway for a three-day LAN bash--I am more interested in the DHCP server functionality. So, has anyone seen one of the new units give out IP addresses to more than 50 clients?

How can I get a list of all DCHP clients of my Airport Extreme?

I'm trying to troubleshoot network problems, and I can't figure out how to get a list of DHCP clients. In Airport Utility 6.3.1, it lists the wireless clients when I click on the airport icon, but it doesn't list the wired clients. Running around the house looking at the network settings of every wired device isn't a lot of run.
I saw posts that said to download Airport Utility 5.6.6, but the installer gives an error (I'm running OSX 10.7.5), so I can't get that to run.
Speaking of trying to troubleshoot problems, I don't see any logs accessible from Airport Utility. How should I get at those?

You might be using Mavericks. Apple shut the door on 5.6 workarounds in Mavericks.
I can understand the need to keep things simple, but SOME level of advanced information (like wired client addresses) should be available on an advanced screen. Extremely frustrating.
You might want to tell Apple this.

Fios wifi at home with Airport extreme extender?

Have latest hardware Airport Extreme, just got Fios Wifi. Can I use AE to extend the Fios wifi router? and how to do it? Thanks in advance William

The Fios router and AirPort Extreme need to connect using a wired Ethernet cable connection....or if that is not possible....you might be able to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.
Connect from a LAN <-> port on the Fios router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name, same wireless security settings and same wireless network password as the Fios network.
The final step would be to insure that the AirPort Extreme is configured to operate in Bridge Mode to work correctly on the network.
There are other much more complicated methods to connect the devices together as well, but another user will need to post on details in that regard.

Voip WiFi UStarCom Clamshel phone & Airport Extreme

My clamshell wifi voip phone (UStarcom) cannot even connect to the AP. The manual offers no explanation that hasn't been tried. I cannot connect this "wonderful" voip wifi phone.
Is it compatible with Airport Extreme (802.11n)? The manual says the phone is capable of 802.11n. But configuring the wifi connections in the phone still it cannot connect to my AP. What can be done? Company offers no assistance to private users. How do I get it connected to the AP? I have a SIP account but without AP phone is useless. Extreme works well with my iMac and PB. Thanks if someone can offer help. Please advise. Hard to find anyone who has knowledge.

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.

Computer only connects to wifi manually after disconnecting airport extreme

Recently stopped using Airport Extreme. Macbook pro connects to wifi but manually only. Now everytime I start up, I have to connect to network. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thx

Client Table in Airport Extreme

I use to have a Linksys DSL Router. One of the tabs in the administration software gave a listing of clients connected to the network. Is there a similar feature in the Airport Extreme?
If not, is there any other way to see what units are connected to my network?
I am currently not running WPA on my wireless network (I'm working on it but currently some issues to resolve) and would like to see if clients other than those in my house are attached to my network.

Impossible to Wifi link G5 with Airport Extreme to Sagem Livebox

I live in France and have just aqquired a Livebox from Orange. I have installed An Airport Extreme in my 2004 dual processor G5 with the aim of having a wire free connection.
I already have an up and running ADSL line. I unplugged the MAC ADSL (high speed) Ethernet modem and took it off the the telephone plugs from the wall sockets (to avoid any interference). I then configured the livebox using a laptop PC with a USB Orange WiFi connection. This worked perfectly.
With this running, I tried to link in the Mac as a second computer using the specified methodology. However, when I put in the WPA/WEP code, the MAC said that this code format is not accepted. I tried various things over about 2 hours but with no success. I even moved the Livebox-38d1 closer next to the MAC.
The MAC detected it on the "finder" Airport list (at the top Right hand side of the main screen).
As far as security codes are concerned I am not sure what the difference is between WPA and WEP, if any. Actually, the automatic security code requested was WEP and NOT WPA Personal as in the documents from Orange.
I have read the UK Orange site help notes (although some of the links are not working... ).
Advice and help please.
Note that all I am trying to do at this point in time is to use Wifi to connect the MAC up as a second computer on the Livebox.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

On the French forum: http://forums.macgeneration.com I found the solution (after reading about thirty contributions). The Sagem Livebox key to be used is WEP hexadecimal and NOT WPA Personal as written in he Orange documenation.

Trouble extending a wifi network with 2nd Airport Extreme base station.

I have added a second Airport Extreme in order to extend a network. I connected it to the network via an ethernet cable into one of the three ethernet ports. I have configured it using these instructions (http://systemsboy.com/2009/02/extending-an-airport-network.html). I get green lights for both units.
My network works until I update the second unit. As soon as I update the second unit, my entire internet connection goes down. Even computers in the office that are connected via ethernet cannot access the internet. As soon as I unplug the second base station, the internet connection is "live" again. I don't know how to proceed. I think my brain is fried. Any advice would be helpful.

Based on the information in your post, the article that you referenced will not provide the correct configuration that you need for your network. In summary, the information in the article is for extending wireless network using wireless only. You are connecting your two routers together using ethernet, correct?
To confirm, your post indicates that +I have added a second Airport Extreme in order to extend a network. I connected it to the network via an ethernet cable into one of the three ethernet ports+
If this is correct, the Wireless Mode for your "main" router should be set to "Create a wireless network".
For the second AirPort Extreme, you will use exactly the same setting, "Create a wireless network". The network name, security and password should match the settings of your main network exactly. This is probably confusing to you, but these are the correct settings when you have the second AirPort Extreme connected to the first using an ethernet cable.
It is critical that the second AirPort Extreme be configured as a "bridge" in order to function correctly on your network. When you are in AirPort Utility - Manual Setup, click the Internet icon at the top of the setup page. Look for the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom of the page. This must be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)". The configuration to "bridge" should be the last step before your click the Update button at the lower right of your screen.

Airport Extreme with Airplay

Having an issue getting airplay to work on my apple devices after connecting an Airplay enabled Denon AVR1912 receiver. When I first hooked the receiver up to my network, I found the airplay icon on my iPad and MacBook. Both were able to establish communication with the receiver and airplay worked just fine. After shutting everything down for the day and going back the next day, I can no longer find the Airplay icon so I can't establish music streaming to my receiver. I have no idea why it worked the first time and now is dead in the water. I've read through every discussion thread I can find as well as posing a question to the Denon help desk. They only said that it's not a Denon issue and to reboot all devices which I did with no change. What is really wierd is that I can stream internet radio through the receiver so it's communicating in the network just fine. It appears that Airplay really is the culprit. I've got all the latest releases installed as well as any/all firmware updates to all devices including the Denon receiver, my airport extreme and iPad.
I've also attended to all the suggestions in the support sight for troubleshooting airplay including the following:

Verify that your AirPlay-enabled devices have the most up-to-date software or firmware (see the table above for minimum AirPlay requirements).
Verify that all your AirPlay-enabled devices are logged on to the same home Wi-Fi network (check the home network names on your all your devices to confirm).
Verify that your iOS device has Wi-Fi turned on and is associated with the same home Wi-Fi network as your AirPlay-enabled device.
Ensure that AirPlay is enabled on the device to which you are trying to stream content (for example, you can disable or enable AirPlay on Apple TV in the AirPlay menu: Settings > AirPlay).
Check Internet or network connectivity on all affected devices.
Temporarily disable firewalls (both network and local) and security software. Security software and firewalls may block ports that AirPlay uses to stream content. You can often resolve issues with security software by updating, correctly configuring, or uninstalling security software.
Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same AirPlay-enabled device at the same time.
Turn off Bluetooth on your iOS device by tapping Settings > General > Bluetooth.
If attempting to use AirPlay from a third-party app or a website from your Safari app on your iOS device, confirm that the app or website is AirPlay compatible (refer to the developers of the app or website for additional information).
I'm now at a standstill as to how best to resolve. Any suggestions? I'm thinking I need to go the extra mile and install AppleTV to remove the receiver from the equation. Thanks in advance for any insight from a knowledgable Apple tech.

As you, I have tried everything and I do not know what to do next, eventhough when I lose airplay I can put it back on by resetting the network or rebooting the router. That is the only way to use it again. I think this is to do with the Airplay feature.

RV042 maximum number of DHCP clients

I have a few sites using the RV042 with wireless access points and some of them have over 50 devices.
In reviewing the documentation (specifically,http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/csbr/rv0xx/administration/guide/rv0xx_AG_78-19576.pdf), I came across this:
Enable DHCP server: Check the box to allow the router to dynamically assign IP addresses to up to 50 connected devices. Uncheck the box if you have another DHCP server on the network or you want to configure static IP addresses for your network devices.
Is this accurate? Or will the RV042 allow more than 50 devices?

You could always adjust the start/end IP address of the DHCP address pool to accommodate more clients up to 253.
50 is the default pool size.

How can I see a complete list of wired and wireless clients on an Airport Extreme?

As per the title, I cannot find a way in Airport Utility to see the wired clients, only the wireless ones. It's driving me nuts! Is there any other way of doing this via the Mac if the utility doesnt have this function?

Apple unfortunately has dropped a number of features and functions in Lion and Mountain Lion within the AirPort Utility application.
If you are using the Lion operating system, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to get those features back.
If you are using Mountain Lion, Apple's software will not allow you to install AirPort Utility 5.6 in the normal way....but you can always use a utility like Pacifist to manually extract the application from the downloand package and install it in the Utilities folder on your Mac.
Then AirPort Utility 5.6 will run just fine on a Mountain Lion machine. See this article for more details:
