Maximum RAM for Mid-2010 iMac 3.2GHz w/ Core i3 Processor?

I am looking to upgrade the RAM on my iMac. This is the first time I've ever done so and the reason for it is that I'm finally starting to experience some noticeable lag while playing games. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means but I feel as though the kinds of games I play shouldn't be struggling so much to run. Some examples of games I've played that have had trouble include Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Left 4 Dead. These games came out a few years ago so it's not like I'm pushing the limits of my machine here! I've done quite a bit of research online but I've come across some conflicting reports on the maximum amount of RAM I can install.
Apple's support files state that the computer can hold up to 16GB of RAM, but then go on to state that this would be equivalent to a 4GB SO-DIMM in each slot. Is that because there are four total slots in my iMac? (See... I told you I'm new at this!)
At the same time, I've also read that it is possible to install up to 32GB of RAM in this particular model of iMac. Is this actually true?
Whichever the case may be... can anyone recommend some good, quality, dependable brands of RAM? Because in doing my research I've read a few horror stories about faulty RAM (and no... I'm not planning on shopping on eBay so don't worry!).
My final question is this: Is upping my RAM actually worth it? As in, will it help my games run smoother and/or better? I ask because I've also wondered if the video card might be the bigger problem (which I hope it's not because I have no idea if it's even possible to replace that).
Sorry for being so long-winded but I just really want to make sure I do this right and don't waste my money. Thank you in advance for any help! =)

Your computer has 4 slots. When Apple shipped the computer the largest DIMM shipping was 4GB so Apple advertises 16GB as the max. According to OWC that remains the maximum for your computer, only the i5 and i7 models can be upgrade to 32GB. At this time 16GB should be plenty for most people.
There are a number of things that have an impact on speed and, of course, one of them is RAM. When your computer first came out the operating system you were using was less RAM hungry. It seems that each new upgrade (or every other OS upgrade) ups the RAM ante. Other things that have an impact are the utilities and programs you run behind the scenes. They can burn up lots of CPU cycles and RAM. Hard drive space is another factor - the operating system and programs need room for temporary files and when this room isn't available the computer slows down. So, are you running anything like anti-malware? Dump it, not needed. Do you have about 25GB of free drive space? If not, free some up.
Quality RAM - not only what you buy but who you buy it from is important. I go with Crucial or OWC.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Cable/Adapter for mid-2010 iMac?

    Hi . . .
Sorry to pester with a question that's been covered from various angles before, but I'm new to the Mac world. Am a musician in BC, Canada doing a project remotely with people in Ontario. Decided to ditch my PC-based recording rig and went with a 2010 iMac and Logic Pro X (hallelujah!) because the other people are using Logic Pro X. So . . . I'm just learning the ropes.
Anyway . . . I have a spare monitor I want to run in dual setup extended desktop, and I'm not 100% certain of the cable and/or adapter I'll need. I'm also not sure why the adapters are bigger and seem to contain more internal components, whereas the cables just look like a simple "Plug 1" connected to "Plug 2" cable in a variety of lengths (in the same way you'd have a XLR to 1/4" phono cable).
Here's the info on my system, and any help would be greatly appreciated (will a cable suffice or do I need an separate adapter, DVI type, etc).
My iMac (mid-2010 21" Core i3 with Firewire running Moutain Lion 10.8.5):
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i3-3.06-21-inch-alumi num-mid-2010-specs.html
My monitor I want use as an extended desktop (Acer 22" X223W LCD):
    http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/acer-x223w-lcd-monitor/4507-3174_7-32627876 .html
So, it appears I'll need a male Mini DisplayPort to a male DVI-D Dual adapter and/or cable. Do I need to specifically buy a DVI-D Dual cable? Will a simple cable function properly or do I also need an adapter? I'm pretty sure a DVI-I cable won't work because it would have extra pins that aren't present in the DVI-D.
Thanks again . . . the assistance is appreciated.
    Suds . . .

    You are overthinking this.
"DVI dual link support" is concerned about the resolution of the display, not the number of displays.   A dual-link adapter or cable basically has double the number of wires to carry extra data to support higher resolutions than a single-link cable.  Of course, both the computer and the external display must also support the higher resolutions in order to take advantage of the capabilities of dual-link.
You want to use two displays ... your iMac's buit-in display + your Acer display as a second monitor (what you called "dual monitors").  You can do this, as I explained earlier.
Your Acer monitor's maxiumum resolution of 1680 x 1050 is not high enough to require a dual-link connection.
"In single-link mode, the maximum pixel clock frequency is 165 MHz that supports a maximum resolution of 2.75 megapixels (including blanking interval) at 60 Hz refresh. For practical purposes, this allows a maximum 16:9 screen resolution of 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz (1915 × 1436 at a 4:3 ratio).
To support higher-resolution display devices, the DVI specification contains a provision for dual link. Dual-link DVI doubles the number of TMDS pairs, effectively doubling the video bandwidth. As a result, higher resolutions up to 2560 × 1600 are supported at 60 Hz [via dual-link DVI]."   (See Digital Visual Interface, Wikipedia)
You can connect almost any VGA, DVI or HDMI display to your iMac, using the appropriate cable and/or adapter.  Of course, you always have to make sure that your cable has the correct gender plug on each end.   The Apple adapter I recommended has a female connector, so you will need a cable with a male DVI-D plug on one end.  As for the other end of the cable, check the input on your Acer display to see what it has and select a cable that has an appropriate gender connector on the end that will plug into your Acer monitor.
In extended desktop mode, you can set separate (independent) resolutions for your iMac display and your external Acer display, taking advantage of the maximum resolution of each.   (For example, that's why the MacBookPro example you cited works, it's because that model MacBook Pro can support higher resolutions on an external display than it's built-in LCD panel can.)

  • RAM Upgrade for Mid-2010 MBP 2.8 GHz Core i7

I ordered an 8 GB Memory upgrade kit from OWC. When I install the memory, the screen remains blank and I get 3 long tones, 3 short tones and 3 long tones. Article HT2538 says that should be a Firmware restoration from CD in process, but that's not the case. Software Update says everything is at the latest level. Bad Ram, or wrong specs the more likely culprit? What about Firmware?
Both the current system settings and the label on the new ram says DDR3 PC8500 1066MHz

Update: OWC Tech Support responded to try and clean the RAM contacts witha pencil eraser. This work for one module, but not the other. I will be returning the defective module.
Additionally, I was incorrect about the error code. The system replies with 3 short tones, 3 long tones, 3 short tones. This is opposite of the "Firmware upgrade" code I thought I was getting. I have not been able to ID this code (The RAM failed checksum code is just 3 short tones, not this sequence)

  • Best Firewire 800 HDD Options for mid-2010 iMac?

    Hi all,
I've run out of space on my internal HDD and I understand that upgrading the internal HDD is rather difficult.  I started looking around at external HDD's and it appears that both WD and Seagate have rolled off support in their mainline products for Firewire 800.  You can still get a previous model WD Studio that has Firewire 800, but it is almost twice the price of the latest model.  What are my best options for an external hard drive?  Any recommendations?

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/Final Cut user, both have their own  individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

  • MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Mid 2010

What is the MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mid 2010 - 24MC374LL/A, running OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)?
I tried to search for this but was unable to find anything.
Apple Specs say 8GB, but I was just told by someone I THINK would know, that you can actually go up to 16GB.
This would be an enormous improvement to my workflow if true.
Anyone out there know for certain?
Making sure before I buy (or NOT!)
    Thanks.
    Jerry G

I just found this post and I realize this is a late response but maybe it will help others.
Based on recent circumstances I just happened to have two 8GB DDR3 modules collecting dust. Having an old trusty MacMini as my media center, server among other things and whatnot, I was curious if I could bump this little thing to 16GB. In doing so I found this post and verified with OWC.
    End result:
Booted with no issues, and is running nice and smooth. Should be noted that just adding 16GB of RAM to a Core 2 Duo will not make the machine lightning fast or become some amazing computing platform. It will just make the box run a bit quicker and give you the ability to have more applications open before you begin to note some lag.
However this is really nice to see:

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • Use 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for 2013 macbook air?

I would like to use my 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for my 2013 macbook air. I tried using Screen Recycle, however I would prefer more of a monitor situation than a side-by-side extra screen situation. Ideally with my wireless keyboard and mouse. Does anyone have any advice, or am I asking too much from apple? Thanks very much.

Yes. With an Ethernet cable and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

  • Maximum RAM for iMac 2006 5.2 17" C2D

Having followed the discussions on maximum RAM for this model it  appears that 2GB is the maximum possible. I discovered this after purchasing a matching pair of 2GB sticks of RAM :-(
However, as the iMac would not start with the 2 x 2Gb sticks I tried various combinations 1 x 2Gb & 1 x 1Gb, swapping these between the two slots etc etc until the final combination of 1x 2GB and 1 x 256Mb works. I am tempted to purchase a stick of 512mb to see what happens next but I am intrigued as to why the higher combinations do not work, any thoughts on this are welcome.
All the memory is DDR2 667MHz but the combination that works has the 2gb at 2rx8 and the 256Mb at 1rx16.
    Spec of machine is : iMac 2006 5.2 17", C2D 1.83ghz, 24x Combodrive, 10.6.8

I would use 2 x 1GB, as the Intel architecture runs just a little faster with matched memory (around 3%-5%).
While 2GB + 256MB boots, have you looked to see what the system is showing as available memory?

  • Mid 2010 iMac Problems

    I have a 21.5" Mid 2010 iMac with 16 GB RAM, running 10.8.5.
    Problem #1
It's recently started doing some odd behavior when waking up from sleep. I have the screen saver set to come on after 5 minutes of inactivity and then the display and computer both sleep at 15 minutes.
When I try to wake the computer up by moving the mouse, it takes anywhere between 5-10 seconds for the password prompt to pop up and then it's another 2-5 seconds before it will let me type in the box. It also seems that when the computer sleeps, the wifi is disconnecting, because the computer won't have received any new email and all my mailboxes have the little exclamation symbol next to them.
After about 5 seconds or so once the computer fully wakes up, it reconnects and pulls all my new mail.
    Problem #2
This usually happens when I just browsing facebook or youtube or something like that, but when I switch over to another application and come back to Safari, I will get the beach ball for a few seconds and then the computer will freeze.  The mouse cursor turns into the little "I" symbol like when you go to type or highlight text.  The only thing I can do at this point is a restart.
    Problem #3
I have spaces set up with Safari, Mail, iCal, and iTunes in spaces 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Most of the time I'm in Safari, but if I move to another space either with the mouse or the keyboard shortcut, to check for new mail, for instance, and go immediately back to Safari, it will on it's own jump back to the space I just left.  It happens with any space no matter what.  I use the option + arrow keys to go between spaces a lot.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?   Thanks for your help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My mid 2010 iMac is running very slow.

I have done all the usual things such as checking the disk is clean, closing unnecessary programmes etc.  I would rather not replace what seems to be a good machine.  Any ideas?  Below is an etrecheck report on the machine:
    Problem description:
I have 21.5 inch mid 2010 iMac running Yosemite.  Its very slow, programmes keep crashing etc.  Could you recommend any fixes rather than me having to buy a new one?  The HD is less than half full.

    Hi Lex
Its bizarre to still see cleanmymac on report below.  It wasn't listed in applications, and I just found a couple of files that I deleted.  Anyway, here is the report:

  • Windows 7 blue screen on Mid 2010 iMac running 10.8

I had previously had the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium running on my mid 2010 iMac running 10.7. However, after upgrading to 10.8, my Windows installation would blue screen after booting. I suspect this was due to upgrading to 10.8 as I didn't make any changes to my Windows install because I only use it for gaming.
I've since removed the Windows partition, and tried a clean install via the Boot Camp Assistant. Windows installs just fine and boots cleanly. However, after installing the Apple Boot Camp drivers (freshly downloaded during the Boot Camp Assistant process), Windows blue screens upon booting. I can repair the Windows install using the built in process, but any attempt to install Apple's drivers results in blue screening. I've tried a clean Windows install and redownloading Apple's drivers several times with no luck.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? Thank you for your help!

I do see this. And I suspect Windows updates. Not Apple (though I would be the first to suspect those too).
iMac graphic drivers for Windows seem touchy and common. The April Windows monthly patch updates hit a few iMac users.
One person found that if they only did updates in smaller steps and not all at once they were fine.
Tuesday this week was another Patch Tuesday.
Games, heat, disk blocks, even RAM errors - one person recently we went round and round... bad blocks not heat, new disk drive and they were 100% stable and rock solid but was hard to rule out. Windows though is easier to test RAM and sectors. And Lion was not even aware or sensitive to those bad sectors and read errors OR RAM errors that Memtest clearly showed (run in OS X).
One person had upgraded RAM, low and behold the new DIMMs were just not fully pushed in and seated and making good contacts.
Try to rule out hardware. Maybe you stumbled on bad block being used now. Run chkdsk if nothing else.
And when updating or preparing to, run Registry cleaner in CCleaner first, Go To %TEMP% and remove everything there. Make a system backup image to another disk drive (NTFS) or with WinClone 3 (HFS, $20) or CampTune ($20).
Or it could just be uninstall one driver at a time, start with GPU, look at what was last installed. Windows drivers are not desireable for GPU. Get the one from AMD or Nvidia instead.

  • I can't install Mavericks on the new SSD in my mid-2010 iMac

I recently had my old 500 GB hard drive swapped out for a new 480 GB SSD on my mid-2010 iMac. I made a flash drive into an OSX Mavericks installer per instructions from online tutorials. With the flash drive inserted, I formatted the new SSD in disk utility and then selected it to install Mavericks. However, I can't complete the installation, which is supposed to take 26 minutes, because the screen goes black midway through. I tried this twice and the second time moved the mouse periodically to make sure that the computer wasn't going to sleep. Same thing happened. Installer says that the installation can be recovered, but it will not complete installation. Any advice much appreciated!

Wondering if this can be done
    Yes.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel
Also I have 4 ram slots with 2gb in two of them can I install two sticks of 4gb in the empty ones without impacting performance
Yes. Recommended in pairs. So 2x2GB + 2x4GB SO DIMMS for a total of 12 would be fine.

  • 32GB Mid-2010 iMac

Does an Mid-2010 iMac support 32GB 8x4 of ram?
    Yes, it does.
Do not get OWC ram, mainly because it is overpriced.
If you are looking to upgrade get it from NewEgg.
    Corsair 8GB DDR 1333
    Model #:  CMSA8GX3M1A1333C9

System start  freezing after installing 32 GB ram. Suddenly wait cursor doesn't stop spinning and I can't do any operation. I've got to power off holding power button. Hardware test is ok.
Searching for the word "error" in the console I found this:
17/12/12 18:04:06,000 kernel: SMC::smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap == NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
17/12/12 18:04:09,043 WindowServer: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
    17/12/12 18:04:09,888 Finder: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: _CGSFindSharedWindow: WID 31
17/12/12 18:04:09,888 Finder: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
17/12/12 18:04:09,888 Finder: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSRemoveSurface: Invalid window 0x1f

    17/12/12 18:04:17,891 talagent: CGSReleaseWindow(cid, wid): CGError 1001 on line 759
I don't know if the problem is the ram upgrade or that I run Lion from an external SSD.
Also, this iMac just returned from service because show an error running hardware test.
They changed the logic board and a fan.
