Maximum RAM in MD311LL/A new MacBook Pro 17 inch

I'm thinking about purchasing a current 17 inch MacBook Pro (MD311LL/A) and was wondering about how much RAM can be installed in one. The Apple pages state 8 GB but I noticed on the Cruciial.com website that 16 GB can be installed. Does anyone have any direct experience with installing 16 GB?
Thanks

Page Outs are 9.55 GB
The pageouts count is a "Water meter" type counter that records how many pageouts have occurred since you powered on.
Pageouts occur when there is NOTHING else that can be declared surplus, and something that is marked "in-use" has to be rolled out to disk to make room for a page that is needed. You do not have enough real RAM For the way you are working. You can change the way you work, or you can add more real RAM.
But when you Page Out on a laptop, the disk must remain spinning for a while. This shortens battery life if you are running battery-only, and generates  more heat inside the machine that must be blown out by running the fan motor.

  • Should I buy a new Macbook Pro 13 inch or Macbook Air 13 inch?

    Hi,
I was wondering if I should buy the new Macbook pro 13 inch, or keep my old 2010 1.4 C2D Macbook Air. I am not satisfied with the tiny 64GB SSD that my current Macbook Air has, because just a few weeks after I had done a clean reinstall of OSX Lion, the whole disk almost filled up. The one thing I do like about the Macbook Air, however is the speed of the SSD. Its really quick, and it boots in under 20 seconds. The Air didn't have many performance issues (other than overheating like crazy after playing a few graphics-intensive games).
If I were to buy a new Mac, my price range would be from $1200-$1500. I plan to use Garageband/iMovie frequently for making Youtube videos/school projects, and store a large music library. I also plan to do some moderate gaming and run Windows 7 in Bootcamp/Parallels. I don't plan to take it around much, but I don't want to have to weigh down my backpack in case I have to. My two options now would be the new Macbook Pro 13 inch or the new Macbook Air 13 inch. Could anyone give me a suggestion of which computer to buy?
    Thanks!

I went through this same thing when I purchased my first Mac 3 days ago, also between the 13 inch MBA and MBP. I ended up deicding with the 13inch MBP, here's why:
    1. More hard drive space, yes it may not be an SSD but more space is more space. I have also heard about people taking out the disc drive and adding an SSD in its place, so there would be an option.
    2. The disc drive, I rarely do use it but just in case it's there and easier than carrying around an external.
    3. Upgradability, I plan on keeping this Mac for a while because I spent so much on it. On a MBP I can upgrade the internal parts such as the hard drive and RAM. On a MBA everything is soldered together so what you buy is what you stick with.
    4. Ethernet port, this is one that could be gotten around by an adapter but I still took it into consideration. Not everywhere has wifi yet including my work where every computer is hard wired.
    5. Bootcamp, as well I plan to run Windows 7 on mine and Windows 7 takes a good amount of space so this is another spot where the larger hard drive of the MBP comes in handy. You could always have an external hard drive and run Windows 7 off of that on an Air but then you would have to have it always plugged in when you wanted to run Windows 7.
About me, I am a student so I had a lot to think about and read a lot of reviews online before I decided on my MBP but I am glad I decided on this over an Air. It may be a few pounds heavier also but in the long run for me I think the Pro will be better, I do plan on adding more RAM in the future as software becomes more memory intensive. With you're pricerange being 1200-1500 the 13inch MBP with the i7 processor  may be one to look at. From Apple with their student discount, if you are one, you get $100 of plus a $100 giftcard. At BestBuy (where I got mine) the price of the i7 13inch MBP is 1,424.99 and if you're a student you get $100 off but no giftcard. I got the i5 13inch MBP because I don't need an i7.
In the end it all comes down to what works for you, but I hope I was able to help you some.

  • New Macbook Pro 15-inch Retina screen flashes white intermittently

I have a new Macbook Pro 15-inch Retina with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD.
    Running OS X version 10.9.5.
Problem: the screen intermittently flashes to white very briefly (for a fraction of a second). This happens once or twice a day. I haven't yet found a way to reproduce the flashing. It happens both on the highest resolution and on the "Best" resolution.
Is there a way to fix this or should I return the MBP?

    Hi ppa2013,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro's internal display flashing, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • I wand to install Windows 7 on my band new Macbook Pro 13 inch. Do I need to buy a specific Mac version of Windows 7 or do I install a standard Windows 7 OS on the Mac

I want to install Windows 7 on my band new Macbook Pro 13 inch and use Parallel Desktop 6 torun it alongside my Mac OS. Do I need to buy a specific Mac version of Windows 7 or do I install a standard Windows 7 OS on the Mac using boot camp.

As vazandrew said, Boot Camp will work with any standard copy of Win 7.
The only exception would be if you want to run it in a virtual environment, such as with Parallels or WMware.
I personally recommend Boot Camp, however, since it only uses the resources for one OS at a time.

  • Hard drive options for New Macbook Pro 17 inch

I'm interested in purchasing a new MAcbook Pro 17 inch. I'll be using it primarily for work in Adobe Illustrator. I'm wondering if the speed difference of the 500GB 7200 drive will be noticeable compared to the standard 750GB 5400 hard drive. Are there any bench tests out there?

  • Buy new MacBook Pro 15 inch

Hi, I intend to buy a new MacBook Pro 15 inch soon. Is it recommanded to buy one now? What if Snow Leopard comes out in a few weeks/months? How do these things work when a complete new OS comes out? I mean will there be problems or high costs to run it on the recent hardware?
I am new in this. I hope someone can give me a little information.
    Thanks!!

Since apple over-hauled the MBP line last October and gave it a small speed bump, I do not think you'll see any updates to the line anytime soon. Maybe a small speed bump in June or October but that's about it. The biggest change will occur when intel released the mobile version(s) of the Nehalem processor. That won't occur until late 2009 or early 2010.
As for Snow Leopard no official release date has been given by apple which could mean that you won't see it for a little while. Apple does provide release dates but they are typically a couple of months in advance. If you did buy a MBP now and apple just so happened to release Snow Leopard a couple of weeks later they typically give you a coupon for a free upgrade.
We really comment on how well things run on the new OS because many of us don't have it and those that do are bound by Apple's non-disclosure agreement. If you look at Apple's prior OS upgrades, you can see that unlike windows there's been very little compatibility or stability issues. Apple does an excellent job of providing a stable and well rounded OS.

  • New MacBook Pro 17 Inch - Journaling is disabled

I'm perplexed by this. I got my new MacBook Pro 17 Inch on Monday. I decided to try partitioning. I went to Disk Utility and discovered that journaling is not enabled. The choice to make it so is grayed out. How could this happen? What should I do about it? Thanks.

That's because OS X doesn't like the idea of formatting itself.
You can't use Disk Utility to format the volume that it is running off of. You would have to boot off of your install media and launch Disk Utility from there.
If you're saying you're trying to add a new partition and you've clicked the "+" symbol... you need to click on the newly set up partition to select it... and then you'll be able to select the type.

  • I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch. I ran coconut battery test and it says age of the macbook is 22 weeks. And the battery load cycles shows 4 and battery capacity is 96%. Is this all normal? Does anyone have same issues?

    "Is this all normal?"
    Yes.
    "Does anyone have same issues?"
    What issues?
Coconut indicates an approximate battery capacity, and 96% is excellent.  During testing and run-in, the MBP is charged and discharged, and a cycle count of 4 is appropriate.

  • New Macbook Pro 15 Inch RAM Question

So the new Macbook Pro (Non Retina version) comes with 8GB of RAM in the faster model.  It doesn't give the option to upgrade.  Does it recognize more?  Or is 8GB the limit?

If you go aftermarket then you do so at your own risk. Lots of users buy and install RAM that simply doesn't work then come here to look for solutions. Apple will not provide any support because they stand by their position that the configuration is neither tested nor supported by Apple.
This may be important to know before jumping off. Crucial memory products are no better than any other nor will they honor Apple's warranty. YMMV

  • This doesn't fit, but I have questions New MACBOOK pro 15 inch

I am going to get the new Macbook Pro 15inch. I want the 2.8Ghz and I will build up the RAM later. Anyway, for the money should I go the 3.0 GHz? I am a video editor that works on SD and HD, usually never over 720p. I also do a little work in AE, I make my titles and some low level graphics. Will there be a big difference for me in 2.2Ghz of chip power, or can will I be fine for a while with the 2.8.
I know the MAC isn't out yet, but I am trying to save some money. It beats the old price of the mac daddy 15 inch that was topping out at 2300 bucks.
    Cheers.

The 2.8Ghz should work fine. I don't think you would notice that much difference going to the 3.0Ghz. Get a large/fast HD though for video. I just put a 500GB 7200RPM in my aluminum MBP. The 250GB 7200RPM stock drive outgrew me fast.

I want a legal official download from official Microsoft/Windows/Apple/Bootcamps legal websites please. No cracked versions or free anything I can purchase it. But I have a macbook pro without a DVD slot so I need a download please. Can anyone give me a link to where I can download a Windows 8.1 official full version to purchase on Microsoft. I have found this -- http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Windows-8.1/productID.288401 200?icid=L3_Nav_Store_windows81_011415 -- Will this download be compatible with my mac for bootcamp? THANK YOU!

Microsoft store will provide a download manager (.exe) using your Product Key, which needs to be run on a PC. This manager will then let you download an ISO image to a USB and/or DVD.

  • Can anyone point me to the correct type of RAM to purchase for a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) that recently had some problems and I was forced to reinstall OSX and ended up upgrading to Yosemite (I was previously using Mavericks). Unfortunately I did not realize how much OSX 10.10 would slow down my computer, so I'm looking to upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 8GB to help resolve this. However, I don't really have a good idea what type of RAM I need aside from the fact that it needs to be 1066 MHz. I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as to what the exact type of RAM I need to purchase or possibly link me to a site where I could buy what I require. I know some people claim third party RAM doesn't work as well as memory that is made and/or sold by apple but I would prefer to go with whatever is cheapest.

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
    Ciao.

  • On my new macbook pro (15-inch retina, OS X Mavericks), I can't install anything.

I recently got a new macbook pro with os x mavericks. Everything works perfectly, except that whenever I try to install anything from the internet (Adobe Flash Player), it tells me that the package is damaged and I should eject the disk image file. Any .dmg's I open show the same error message.

    RajatTyagi,
the most common cause of that message is an incomplete download. For example, try downloading the standalone Flash Player installer from here. If it doesn’t run on your MacBook Pro, what size is the downloaded disk image file?

My laptop screen randomly going black during the use of computer, but the cursor is active and it moves with the track-pad. I bought this macbook pro 15"Inch laptop just 3 weeks ago. Did anyone come across this issue? Is there any alternative for this issue?

    Hello Clinton
Thank you for your prompt response. I took an appointment with Genius Bar. Yes, this is a brand new laptop purchased it online through Apple website and received it on May 29th.  I started noticing this issue from last week and it is happening at least 4 to 5 times in a day.
If this is really a hardware problem, is there any chance for laptop replacement or what will they do?
