Maximum size possible of hard disk in my IMAC G5 20 inch?

I am using an IMAC G5, 2GHz with a 400 Gb hard disk.
I would like to buy a larger disk, 500 Gb minimum or even 750 Gb.
- What is the maximum size the IMAC can handle?
- Where would I find a document on apple.com to provide further details on the hard disk specifications?
- what is the interface in use for the disk?
thanks in advance for your help.
Patrick

Bonjour,
The iMac G5 uses the Serial ATA (SATA) interface in the standard desktop 3.5" size.
You can install any capacity of drive you can buy on the market today.
Installation Instructions (4.5Mo).

  • Is there a maximum size (on 2TB hard disk) for iTunes folder?

I have a large music collection which I am converting and storing on my hard drive in iTunes.  Is there a limit to how much music I can store without iTunes becoming buggy?  I already have 1TB stored and will probably finish at around 1.5TB.  Does anyone know of any problems with storing this much information (music files AIFF only) Thanks

My library just crossed 350K songs on ~3TB Firewire and no problems except as what whay Limnos mentioned with the speed issue.  I recently upgraded my RAM to 8GB which helped with this.
FYI - There are a few of us with large libraies that have had a strange intermittent permission issue after upgrading to Lion. https://discussions.apple.com/message/17623936#17623936 . Solution is to dsiable local snapshots taken by Time Machine.  All there in the thread in case you run into this,

  • How to get the size of a hard disk?

    Hi,
As above, how to get the size of a hard disk by using Java.
    Thanks you!
    Alex

I would be interested in the answer of this question, too.
In core Java there is no way to find it out in a platform independent manner because of the hardware abstraction of the VM. So my only idea is to write a native library for doing this and colling it via JNI

  • Possible to attach external Esata hard disk on the Imac Quadcore 27?

Is it possible to attach external Esata hard disk on the Imac Quadcore 27? Or any other Imac? The purpose is for video editing, but maybe Firewire 800 is good enough for hd video in Final Cut Pro?

    Hi Simen,
The iMac series do not have an ESATA connection and there isn't a way to make a connection inside. The only possible way is to perform surgery on the iMac which
    1. probably will not work and
    2. almost for sure Invalidate the warranty
This is a fairly common questions however there just isn't a way to do it. If your external drive also has a Firewire or Firewire 800 connection that is your best bet. As you probably know your iMac has a Firewire 800 port and you can daisy chain Firewire devices.

  • Maximum no. of external hard disk

    Hi,
Is there a limit to the number of external hard disk a Sun Enterprise 3000 server with OS Solaris 2.6 can support? My server already has 1 multipack, can i add in a few more?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Tanvir,
Thanks for the link. After looking through some of the documents, it doesn't seem like there is a limit to the number of external hard disks.
Meanwhile i'm still searching among the documents, hoping to find the answer.
    Thank you very much.

  • Limits to recognized size of 2nd hard disk

I just installed a Seagate 250 gb ST3250823A internal hard disk that is only recognized as a 128 gb disk. Is this a system limitation, and if so is there a fix to access the remaining available capacity? I have a 200gb firewire disk that is fully recognized.

OWC sells Intech HD Speedtools a software app that removes the 128GB Hd limitation for any G4 Mac.
I think its $15 OEM software. with pruchase of any new HD from OWC.
Otherwise you could buy it from Intech.
or get an ATA133 PCI card and install it in your PCI slot and run the HD from it.

  • How to improve performances on a freshly installed hard disk on my iMac

Hi everybody, sorry for the quite long subject!
I own a mid 2007 20" iMac which originally came with a 320 Gb hard drive.
I recently decided to upgrade the machine to a beefier hard disk, so I replaced the original one with a WD Caviar Black 1 Tb drive.
    It's a SATA 6 Gb/sec that sports 7200 rpm and a 64 Mb cache.
Now I am wondering if there is any way to fine tune the hard disk performance to take benefit from its better performance features.
In other words: do you think the drive itself (with its cache, etc.) will behave at its best within my iMac.
For your convenience, here's the system information page for the SATA connection (although the parameters name are in italian, it should be easy to understand what they are for):
    Thanks everybody in advance!
    Giovanni

    Hi Giovanni,
It should be fine as is, not much you can do besides adding an SSD & maybe more RAM.

  • New hard disk on old imac - best way to transfer back-up from Time Machine??

    Hello,
The hard disk on my 2008 iMac died and I just got my computer back from the repair guy, who installed a new hard disk (and the latest Yosemite).
Which is the best (and most fail-proof) way for me to transfer all the stuff from the old hard disk -  which is on my Time Machine – to the new one?
Before getting repaired, my iMac was running on Mavericks. My Internet access has also changed (it broke down the same week… ). Don't know it that makes a difference.

Connect your backup drive to the computer. Because you had Mavericks installed before you can only restore your Home folder from the backup. Use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Upon completion you will have two user accounts. The one you are now using and the migrated one. Log out of the account you are using then log into the migrated account. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and enter your admin password for the migrated account. Select the account you were using and click on the Delete [-] button. Select the option to delete immediately.

  • FW Hard disk dont'eject - iMac frozen

    Hi
After a few time of use, my external Hard disk (Iomega fire wire, that I use for Tm backup) won't unmount and freezes Finder ("finder not response"). IMac don't shutdown until I disconnect (powering off or detaching the cable) this hard disk.
If it can useful, It occurs when my Usb printer is ON (Epson RX500), when it is OFF don't occur
    Why ?

The fact that the printer is on and not allowing it to turn off means you must if not manually turn it off, turn the switch off.

  • Is it a mistake for not upgrading the hard disk of new iMac to 1TB Fushion Drive

I have just bought a new iMac 27" in Fortress in HK for Video editing by Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5, may be After Effect later. I am thinking if I have made a mistake for not upgrading the driver to Fushion Drive. The followings are my spec:
    Intel qual core-i7 3.4 GHz
    16 GB RAM
    1TB SATA
    GTX 680 MX
Because my budget was within HKD 20,000, so I am considering if my decision for the upgrades were correct for video editing. To be honest, I really want to try Fushion Drive

I don't think it is a mistake. The Fuse Drive is a combination of both a Real SSD and a spinning mechanical hard drive. With that system if either drive fails you lose all your data.
There have been many articles on how to Make a Fuse drive, when there is both an SSD and Spinner installed in the system, and how to Break one up so you can use both drive independently, SSD and spinning drive as 2 separate drives.
The reason Apple came up with this system is for people that have no concept of how to use 2 separate disks in their systems. It allows them to still have the speed of a SSD along with the storage capacity of the large spinning hard drive without knowing how and where to store the data they have or may accumulate over the life of the system.
Also the way Apple want the user, almost Forces users, to store there files is in the User area that is located on the Boot drive. That will fill up a SSD very fast (depending on how much data the user or users have).
It does have overhead that will slow the system down compared to a system with independently accessed SSD and spinners.
Not sure what model iMac you bought as I didn't think the newest 27 inchers were out yet. But you should be able to add your own SSD so you can use it for the OS and program files and store your data on the mechanical, spinning, hard drive. And you can do that for much less them what Apple charges for a SSD. You could also combine them into a Fuse drive if you like. Just do a Google search for "Make Fuse Drive".

  • Transferring data from ancient SCSI external hard disk to an iMac

I have an old 60mb external SCSI hard drive - so old that when I got it 60mb was huge - that I used with an old Mac Classic. My wife then used it as a backup for a Quadra. Now we want to transfer all the stuff on it to an iMac (which runs 10.4). How do we do this?

    hillmore,
More and more, the best suggestion is to find a user group in your area to make one time transfers. Where in the world is 'Carmen San Diego' or your iMac for that matter? Post back with a city and we might know of a resource near by.
In the NW, Seattle has the best options. Just mentioned them here

  • Hard disk initialisation on IMac

I have an external disk drive connected to my intel based Imac. I can not initialise it with "Disk Utilities" as i alway get this message: "Resource busy" .Any idea of what can i do. Thanks

In Disk Utility, select the drive's current volume in the sidebar. The volume is indented under the drive. Click the Unmount button. If the drive is partitioned, do this for each volume under the drive. Then select the drive in the sidebar and go to the Erase tab or Partition tab (whichever you were using), and try it again.
You can also try doing it immediately after restarting the Mac.

  • Is there a maximum size for an internal hard disk ?

I just bought an 2.5" 160 Gb HD to replace my internal 120 Gb. Presently I only tried to mount it as an external disk, but it is recognized as a 128 Gb disk, not a 160 Gb. As it is a pain to change the internal HD, I would like to be sure the disk will be recognized as a 160 Gb before. I called Apple hot line, but they have no information, for them the maximum capacity for a Powerbook G4 12" is 80 Gb as it was never offered a larger size, but already I have a 120 Gb that I mounted myself perfectly working.
Is there a software / firmware limitation of the addressable size of a hard disk on a PowerBook G4 12" ???

I have called Apple several times, I have talked to the Apple Store in KC. Same answer...well it comes in 40-60-80 configs. Not a good answer.
The 12 inch powerbook G4 supports ATA-100 (100Mb/sec) interface. The specs on the Hitachi HD refer to ATA-6, which refers to the higher speed transfer rate of UDMA6.
As I understand the ATA (AT Attachment),PATA (Parrallel ATA), IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) and UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) are basically used interchangeably to describe the interface (see wikopedia for detail difference of implementation of specs).
Since the Mac OS supports terabystes of HD data, the OS is not a limitation. The limitation is in the motherboard interface and controller for ATA (ATA-100)
The ATA specification is 28-bit addressing with a maximum capacity to address of 137gb - 128gb formated. It is calculated as follows. A bit is either on or off meaning it is binary - or in mathmatical terms base of 2.
2 to the 28th power = 268,435,456 disk sectors to address.
Each sector has blocks of 512 bytes.
    268,435,456 * 512 = 137,438,953,472 or 137GB
Once formated the drive capacity for data is 128GB.
This is the same issue as the W98 PCs. An indication Apple is way behind in technology for HD interface and controllers. Very sad!
Now the part I do not understand ATA-6 introduced 48 bit addressing, increasing the limit to 128 PiB (or 144 petabytes). This is much larger than 128GB standard ATA. My assumption here is the Hitachi HD supports ATA-6 however Apple does not support more than standard ATA on the motherboard HD interface and controller. The G4 HD controller I assume does not support Ultra DMA mode 5 compliant (UDMA5). This would mean it does not support the 80-connector cables, only the older 40-connector cables.
Does anyone know if this powerbook supports ATA-100,UDMA5, 80-connector cables?

  • Time Machine to back up external hard disk

    Hi,
I 'm going to add an external hard disk to my iMac for storing music files and another one as backup. Not sure if Time Machine is possible to do auto back up for the external harddisk rather than the one built inside the iMac?

provided the external is formatted mac os extended, TM will back it up along with the internal drive.
